1.0

Introduction

Manager is a job title that used in organization to assign an employee with certain
authorities to lead a group of people or functions. Manager is responsible for the planning
and directing worker below him by monitoring their works and taking corrective action
when it is necessary. For more simple understanding, they act as the individual who is
directly responsible to ensuring that tasks are performed by people or employees in an
organization in order to archive the organization perspective. There are many ways for a
manager to perform their job. They can be Figure Head, Leader, Liaison Officer,
Spokesperson, Negotiator or Initiator. Each of the roles has different job scope from each
others and can be define as below:

1. Figure head functions as representative of an organization. They can help to raise


the reputation and brand of the company. Figure heads job is more to socializing.
Their job requires them to get onto public by attending events or convention
related to their organization.

2. Manager function as a Leader in motivating, encouraging his subordinates, leads


their subordinates to archive organization perspective. Leader is to lead group of
people to moving forward and to ensure organization target is archive.

3. Manager as a Liaison Officer conveys relevant information gathered to


individuals outside his unit or to other relevant parties outside his organization.
Liaison is refer to liaise, which define as communicate and network interact with
others. It is very clear as Liaison Officer act as connection to be in touch between
Internal & external party.

4. Role as a Spokesperson is to ensure latest information is reported. They always


ensure that the high level management or others party is furnishing with the latest
information. Spokesperson ensure the information released is accuracy and
reliable.

5. Manager as a Negotiator to solve the problems regardless of complexities.


Manager responsible to negotiate and correspond with other in order to solve the
issues or to look for better solutions that brings benefits to the organization.

6. A manager as the Initiator of corporate actions and transformations. They initiate


and bring improvement to help to archive company objectives. They always bring
in new ideas and developing the potential area to enrich the ways to achieve
company objectives.

There are many roles of manager been practicing around us. Managers position exists at
everywhere. There are managers who leading a team likes soccer team, there are
managers to manage the restaurant and many others. Everyday, we been acknowledge
their existing through newspaper, television, radio, electronics device and others
communication platform. Some of the managers carrying only one function and some
others were performing by several roles. Below are some articles from online newspaper
or website which can descripts the roles mentioned above.

The Asia Human Resources Department Awards 2014, winner for the contribution to
society category Tan Sri Dato Sri Leong Hoy Kum is a well-known figure among the
society. The group managing director and chief executive of Mah Sing Group Berhad
which had founded the plastics manufacturing division in 1979 and listed as Mah Sing
Group Berhad on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange in 1992. Mah Sing Group Berhad
also is one of Malaysias leading property developers, specializing in building homes and
prime commercial projects in strategic locations.

Besides being the man on the top management of Mah Sing Group Berhad, Tan Sri
Leong is also selected as the central committee of the 900-member Malaysian Plastics
Manufacturers Association. He has been the honorary president of the Young Malaysian
Movement Association (YMM) since 1999 and president of The Dramatic Art Society,
Malaysia since 1996. Besides that, he is also vice-president of the Table Tennis
Association of Malaysia.

In recognition of his achievements, he was conferred the Darjah Paduka Mahkota


Selangor (D.P.M.S.) which carries the title of Dato and the Jaksa Pengaman awards by
the Sultan of Selangor in 1996 and 2001 respectively. In 2007, Tan Sri Leong was
conferred theDarjah Kebesaran Sultan Ahmad Shah Pahang Yang Amat DiMulia
Peringkat Pertama Sri Sultan Ahmad Shah Pahang which carries the title Dato Seri,
followed by the Darjah Panglima Setia Mahkota which carries the title Tan Sri in 2009.

When asked what his immediate reaction was upon receiving the news of winning the
award for contribution to society, this is what he said: I am honored to have won the
award. As a caring corporate citizen, Mah Sings corporate social responsibility is deeply
embedded in our corporate philosophy. Beyond making donations to worthy causes, we
further set up a charitable trust, Mah Sing Foundation, to receive and administer funds
solely for medical, educational and charitable purposes, as well as to seek to raise more
funds via annual fundraising activities and events. It is indeed gratifying to find that our
efforts have been appreciated.

According to Tan Sri Leong, winning an award is a responsibility and he ensures that
Mah Sing will try its utmost best to live up to it. He is firm on his stand that Mah Sing
will continue to contribute towards making the communities, within which it operates,
better.

By understanding the article publish above, it understands that Tan Sri Leong is taking
the role as Figure Head to represent his organization which is Mah Sing Group Berhad.
He is active in social community and was the board of directors of various other private
companies. He also held the position in Non profit organization likes Young Malaysian
Movement Association, Young Malaysian Movement Association and others.

When he was interviewed, he informs that Mah Sings corporate social task is sincerely
embedded in corporate philosophy. Ahead of making donations, they further set up a

He is promoting and rises up the corporate reputation in the public. It is clearly shown
that Tan Sri Leong is the Figure Head of the organization.

Bank Negara governor, Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar is the seventh and current governor of
Bank Negara Malaysia, Malaysias central bank. She has been governor since May 2000
and was the first women in the position. As the governor and the Chief Executive Officer
in the organization, she always takes the role as spokesperson for Bank Negara and
represents financial structures of Malaysia government.
To be a regular spokesperson for the organization, she always given the speech and
information on the financial issues and acknowledges current financial status to the
public and the investor. She also reveals Bank Negara actions and others perspective
related to Malaysia economics.
From the article publish by The Star on 4 July 2014, she had once again released
information and furnished the Malaysian and investors on the information of current
situation on resolving sovereign debt. From the article, she disclose that currently policy
maker are more aware to the spreading trend within domestic and across nationwide, but
there still a mistake done in developing the method for restructuring of sovereign debt.

She also mentioned that significant responses by multilateral organizations to focused on
effort to improve the effectiveness of risk surveillance capabilities and in the provision of
financial safety nets. However, there had been less success in building the agreement to
concentrate on sovereign debt. That will let the solutions would interrupt on the
sovereignty of countries.
She also noted that noted three main challenges confronting the international
collaborative efforts in crisis management. These divide to national authorities need to
judge main concern to national considerations even national developments and policy
actions could have global effect. Follow by less concentration to the international
interconnectivity and inter linkages and last is related to the leadership that was require to
build regional and international harmony in an environment of various backgrounds,
ideology and perceptions.
As a spokesperson, it is responsibilities to offer an insight to a public so that the public
understanding the topic. This is because reporters vary in journalistic experience and
subject matter knowledge. Even an experienced journalist doesnt know everything. An
effective spokesperson has access to information and perspective the reporter doesnt
have, particularly economics trend for this case. The spokespersons goal is to provide
useful information that meets a reporters need and communicates an organization
message.
By refer to the dialogue taken from article above, it is evidently shown that Tan Sri Dr
Zeti Akhtar is highlighting the information regarding the sovereign debt issues which is
happen globally. As a spokesperson from financial organization that overseeing the
national economics, she is revealing the possible treats of the outcomes will happen if the
issues is not handling properly. She also mentioned the join effect of international to
solve the crisis could be jeopardizing by three main challenges. By giving these fact and
information, Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar is fulfilling the act of offer an insight and provides
useful information to others. Thus, by refer to above facts. It is said that Tan Sri Dr Zeti
Akhtar is represented Bank Negara as spokesperson.

Coach of the Dutch national team, Louis van Gaal has appointed manager of the
Netherlands for the second time, He is the leader and led Netherlands national team to
third place at the 2014 Federation International Football Association (FIFA) World Cup.
This is the tremendous job done by Netherlands national team as their expectations
surrounding them were comparatively low due to mixed pretournament friendly
performances and the failure of the Netherlands national team in European Cup 2012.

Louis van Gaal showing the characteristics of the Leader during their quarter-final match
versus Costa Rica in the World Cup, Van Gaal made the decision to take off first-choice
goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen for Tim Krul in the final minute of extra time. This decision
paid off as Krul saved two of the Costa Rican penalties, sending the Dutch national team
through to the semi-finals to face Argentina, which they eventually lost in another penalty
shootout. Van Gaal ended his tenure as Dutch national team manager on 12 July 2014
when the Dutch beat the hosts Brazil 30 in the third/fourth place play-off match.

From the decision making by Louis van Gaal, it is shown that he influences a group of
people towards the achievement of a goal. Their goal is wining the match. By adding Tim
Krul who is specialist in penalty goalkeeping, this will release the stress bear by the
Dutch player and motivating them in better performances. In the other hand, it is the
tactical substitution that will transform more pressure to the opponent. This comes to end
with a winning result by scoring four goals to three. This shows his abilities as a Leader
to make decision and doing a thing to motivating his team.
Louis van Gaal paid tribute to his Netherlands team after they beat Brazil in the thirdplace play-off at the 2014 World Cup. Speaking to Dutch broadcaster NOS post-game,
Van Gaal admitted it was a tough task to motivating his players but they had showed
tremendous character following Wednesday's disappointment. This was very difficult
for us," said Manchester United-bound Van Gaal, who ended his second period as coach
of the Dutch national team with a total record of 26 wins from 46 games.
But Van Gaal was far more pleased with the team's united approach, which has not been
the case with the Dutch national team at previous tournaments. This was by far the best
group I've ever coached, the 62-year-old said. And I'm not talking about football
quality but the quality as a human being, as a sportsman, how you deal with each other
and that you are all pulling on the same rope. Of course we can sometimes play better but
the will to win every match saw you back. We have four games to zero and held an
average of [scoring] two goals per game.

From the article post on The Star online at 13 July 2014, it is shown that the Netherlands
coach is pleased and impress by the Netherlands national team performance during 2014
world cup match. At his speech, he also mentioned it was tough to motivate his players
after a defeat to Argentina team in semifinal games. This shown the task performed by
him as a leader, which is to motivate his team and lead them move to the next game. And
he did it successfully by ending the World Cup tournament in third place.
At the end of his speech, he still likely to praise his player by appointed them as the best
team he ever led. He also mentioned that as a sportsman, how they deal with each other
and work as a team is important. This is the last encouragement he gives to his previous
player as he will be leaving his position as National coach and go to the new post as
Manchester United Football Club manager.

Conclusion

From three role of manager been display on this essay, it is evidently to identify each role
of manager and its functionality. A Figure Head whose is represent his organization and
attend the social events and is responsible to keep his organization reputation in good
form. A Spokesperson is to acknowledge his organization and others with the accuracy
information and updated situation. A team Leader is to pursuit his team to archive
objectives by giving motivation and encouragement.
By referring and analyze from above three articles, being a role as Leader is the most
challenging and not easy to perform. A leader can be anyone on the team who has a
specific ability, who is thinking creatively and has a great idea, which has experience in a
certain aspect of the business or project that can prove useful to the team. A leader leads
based on strengths, not titles.
Experienced is important for Leader. Louis van Gaal as the Netherlands National Team
manager or others assigns him as the coach. He had the ability to coach as mentioned
above. Before he takes over the job as National Team manager, he was formerly manager
of Ajax Football Club, Barcelona Football Club, AZ Football Club and Bayern Munich
Football Club. He had served as manager of Football club for twenty years.

He creatively alters the football formation style of Netherlands team by playing


changeable formation. Which is able to support offensive and quickly resume to
defensives formation when is needed. He also shows the great ideas and makes the
decisions to substitute Goal Keeper on the last minutes of the match with Coats Rica. The
decisions bring victory to his side as the choices he makes did influence the touch of both
teams.

As a Leader, He also needs to motivate his team after defeat to Argentina on semifinal
match. Although he is leaving and goes for his new job, he is not forgetting to encourage
and paying tribute to his teammates. This also as one of the characteristic of Leader
which is to praise the good job done and to encourage the team to move forward.

To the conclusion, Leader is person that led a group of people to achieve organization
target. He or she had to be experienced at the field, be creative and innovation, had the
ability to make decision when is needed, be always to motivate and encourage his
teammates and guide them toward correct ways. A great Leader always doing the right
things in parallel achieve organization target.
