Essay Questions
Please limit each response to 150 words
What has motivated you to pursue higher education?
I have always considered medicine as a possible career, but never seriously until I shadowed Dr. Carey.
While shadowing Dr. Carey in the pediatric ICU, I was able to meet Pablo. He was a thirteen-year-old
boy who had come from Honduras to receive medical treatment for a tumor in his brain. Finding the
answer is one thing, but the care involved with treating a patient is another side of medicine that I was
able to experience. Alone, without family, and unable to speak English, Pablo was in a frightening
environment. Dr. Carey, a big man with an Aussie accent, was able to comfort him. Dr. Carey is a very
compassionate person who is dedicated to helping people in his clinic and during his medical mission
trips. Traveling to different countries, Dr. Carey had learned to speak Spanish, which was very helpful
in breaking the language barrier with Pablo. Seeing how Dr. Carey was able to make Pablo smile and
make his days better showed me that doctors not only heal peoples bodies, but also touch their lives.
This quality to be able to impact someones life is something that I value and wish to accomplish as a
patients doctor.
Why did you choose your major or course of study?
I chose to major in Liberal Arts so that I could have a well-rounded education while pursuing a
Doctorate in Medicine. With the passion to become a physician, I want to be the best doctor possible,
which requires a good medical education. By attending medical school, I will learn the skills and
information necessary to provide the best care possible to patients.
What are your plans following graduation?
After graduation, I will be attending the University of MissouriKansas City (UMKC) School of
Medicine. I chose to attend the UMKC School of Medicine because I was positive I wanted to pursue a
career as a physician but could not imagine waiting another four years after high school to begin the
journey. The B.A./M.D. program provides immediate, weekly clinical experience that keeps you
motivated throughout your coursework and gives you early patient exposure that traditional programs
do not offer until the beginning of third year. Prior to admission, I shadowed many graduates of the
UMKC School of Medicine; their outstanding competencies in medicine combined with a genuine
ability to care for and about their patients confirmed this program would allow me to become the wellrounded physician I strive to be.
Describe any other special considerations that we should take into account.
Financial need is a big consideration, as my familys income is not enough to help cover the costs of
college. I have took it upon myself to work in order save money for a college education, but am well
short of the money needed. Furthermore, the fact that my twin brother and I will be attending college at
the same time makes it even harder for my parents to help us in any way. The cost of medical education
is substantial and is very frightening to me. A Bookoo scholarship would help defer the costs associated
with attending medical school and would allow me to continue on in my education, giving me peace of
mind so that I may reach my commitment to becoming a physician.
