and other social groups. The financial management of an organisation must seek to achieve the following
objectives:
To ensure effective utilization of funds by maintaining proper balance between profitability, liquidity
and safety.
To generate and build up sufficient surplus for expansion and growth through ploughing back of
profits.
To minimize cost of capital by developing a sound capital between various securities issued by the
company.
To coordinate the activities of the finance department with the activities of other departments in the
organisation.

ownership, it will depend on any source of finance other than investment in shares.
4. Investment of Funds
The funds raised from different sources should be prudently invested in various assets -short term as well
as long term to optimize the return on investment. In taking decisions for the investment of long term funds,
a careful assessment of various alternatives should be made through capital budgeting, opportunity cost
analysis and many other techniques used to evaluate the investment proposals. A part of the long term
funds should be invested in working capital of the company. While taking decision for the investment of
funds in long term assets, management should be guided by three basic principles, viz. safety, profitability
and liquidity. In taking decisions for the investment of funds in working capital, the finance manager must
seek cooperation of marketing and production departments in estimating the funds which are to be involved
in carrying of inventories in finished product and credit policy of the marketing department and in raw
material and factory supplies of the production department.
5. Management of Cash
It is the prime responsibility of the finance manager to see that an adequate supply of cash is available at
proper time for the smooth running of the business. Cash is needed to purchase raw materials, pay off
creditors, to pay to workers and to meet the day to day expenses of the business. Availability of cash is
necessary to maintain liquidity and credit- worthiness of the business. Excess cash must be avoided as it
costs money. If there is any cash in excess, it should be invested in near cash assets such as investments
etc. which may be converted into cash within no time. A cash flow statement should be prepared by the
department to know the correct need of cash is essential to achieve the goal of profitability and liquidity.
The finance manager should decide in advance how much cash he should retain to meet current
obligations of the company.
6. Disposal of Surplus
One of the prime function of the finance department is to allocate the surplus. After paying all taxes, the
available surplus of the business can be allocated for three purposes
(a) for paying dividend to the shareholders as a return on their investment,
(b) for distributing bonus to workmen and company's contribution to other profit sharing plans, and
(c) for ploughing back of profits for the expansion of business.
As far as the second alternative is concerned, the amount to be paid to workers is generally fixed either by
statute or by agreement and therefore, there is no problem in allocating surplus for this purpose. But a
considerable attention is to be paid in so far as first and third alternatives are concerned i.e., how much to
be paid to shareholders as dividend and how much to be retained in the business. For this purpose factors
like the trend of the earning of the company, trend of the market price of its shares; the requirement of
funds for the purpose of expansion and future prospects should be considered.
7. Financial Controls
The financial manager is under an obligation to check the financial performance of the funds invested in the
business. There are a number of techniques to evaluate the performance viz. Return on Investment (ROI),
budgetary control, cost control, internal audit, ratio analysis and break-even point analysis. The financial
manager must lay emphasis on financial planning as well.
Role of Finance Manager
In the area of finance and financial management, finance manager is important authority. Not only to raise the finance
of company, finance manager also does other lots of works for the company. We can explain his role in following
words:
1. Role of Finance Manager for Raising Funds of Company
Finance manager checks different sources of company. He does not get fund from all sources. First, he checks his
need in short term and in long term and after this he selects best source of fund. He has also power to change the
capital structure of company for giving more benefits to the company.
2. Role of Finance Manager for Taking Maximum Benefits from Leverage
Finance manager uses both operating and financial leverage and tries to use it for taking maximum benefit from
leverage.
3. Role of Finance Manager for International Financial Decision
Finance manager finds opportunities in international financial decision. In these opportunities, he does the contracts
of credit default swap, interest rate swap and currency swap.
4. Role of Finance Manager in Investment Decisions
Finance manager checks the net present value of each investment project before actual investment in it. Net present
value of project means what net profit at discount rate, will company get if the company invests its money in that
project. High NPV project will be accepted. So, due to high responsibility, role of finance manager in this regard is
very important.
5. Role of Finance Manager in Risk Management
Happening of risks means facing different losses. Finance manager is very serious on risk and its management. He
plays important role to find new and latest ways to control risk of the company. Like other parts of management, he
estimates all his risk, he organizes the employees who are responsible to control risk. He also calculates risk
adjusted NPV. He meets all risk controlling organisations like insurance companies, rating agencies at pervasive
level. He is able to convert company's misfortunes into fortunes. By good estimations of adverse situations, he tries
his best to safeguard the money of the company.
Capital investment is the springboard for wealth creation. In a world of economic uncertainty, the investors
want to maximize their wealth by selecting optimum investment and financial opportunities that will give
them maximum expected returns at minimum risk.
Since management is ultimately responsible to the investors, the objective of corporate financial
management should be to implement investment and financing decisions which should satisfy the
shareholders by placing them all in an equal, optimum financial position.
The satisfaction of the interests of the shareholders should be perceived as a means to an end
maximization of shareholders wealth.
Since capital is the limiting factor, the problem that the management will face is the strategic allocation of
limited funds between alternative uses in such a manner, that the companies have the ability to sustain or
increase investor returns through a continual search for investment opportunities that generate funds for
their business and are more favorable for the investors
Therefore, all businesses need to have the following three fundamental essential elements:

Financial Decisions
This deals with the mode of financing or mix of equity capital and debt capital. If is possible to alter
the total value of the company by alteration in the capital structure of the company, then an optimal
financial mix would exist where the market value of the company is maximized.
Investment Decisions
This involves the profitable utilization of a firms funds especially in long-term projects. Because
the future benefits associated with such projects are not known with certainty, investment decisions
necessarily involve risk.
The projects are evaluated in relation to their expected return and risk.
Dividend Decisions
Dividend decision determines the division of earnings between payments to shareholders and
reinvestment in the company.
Retained earnings are one of the most significant sources of funds for financing corporate growth,
dividends constitute the cash flows that accrue to shareholders.
Although both growth and dividends are desirable, these goals are in conflict with each other.
A higher dividend rate means less retained earnings and consequently, slower rate of growth in
future earnings and share prices.
Portfolio Decisions
When performing portfolio analysis, information is gathered about the individual investments
available, and then chooses the projects that help to meet all of our goals in all of the years that are
of concern.
Strategic Portfolio Management takes the insights gained form portfolio analysis and integrates
them into the decision-making process of a corporation.
