interconnection, the boards can be detached easily from each other for instant replacement. They can
also be raised close to the upright position on the chassis to facilitate servicing.
Professional Quality and Reliability
The TCD-D10PRO mkII DAT Recorder isn't simply a consumer recorder with XLR connectors added.
Designed specifically for professional recording, every inch of this compact recorder is packed with
reliable, sophisticated functions that represent Sony's continued leadership in the digital audio market.
Recording Density and Flexibility
The TCD-D10PRO mkII DAT Recorder enables longer recording with a smaller cassette. The DAT
tape is almost half the size of the standard audio cassette but holds up to 2 hours of 2-channel, 16-bit
linear digital audio data. Using the subcode area, it is also possible to record start Ids for high-speed
search, as well as various time information for dating the recording. The absolute time can be recorded
continuously from the beginning of the tape for the convenience of electronic editing using Sony's
PCM-7050/PCM- 7030/RM-D7300 DAT editing system. The continuity of the absolute time across the
consecutively recorded audio segments is assured.
Digital Performance
Because it's digital, DAT recording is not only extraordinary in sound quality but also immune to wow
and flutter, even when recorded on-the-go. Due to the powerful error correction system, the
probability of muting is held down to a bare minimum. 4DD Mechanism with Self-Diagnostics
TCD-D10PRO mkII employs a 4-motor direct-drive tape transport. The head drum, capstan and
reels are driven individually by servo-controlled, linear-torque BSL motors proven for their precision
and stability. The whole mechanism, moreover, is mounted on a rigid, non-magnetic aluminium alloy
base unit. To safeguard against the rare cases of tape trouble, this reliable mechanism of the
TCD-D10PRO mkII is implemented with a comprehensive self-diagnostics function that constantly
monitors the rotations of the head drum, capstan and reels, as well as the tape transport mode and
load/unload time. The moisture sensor gives excessive humidity warning. Upon detection of trouble,
the caution indicator starts flashing. At the same time, the tape is brought to a forced stop and
depending on the condition unloaded automatically, to protect both the tape and the recorder.
Superior Electronics
For improved channel separation, independent A/D converters are used for L and R channels. The
oversampling digital filters in the A/D and D/A conversion circuits perform the dual functions of
removing the sampling noise and eliminating phase distortion. The analog circuit is superbly built with
high-quality components such as aluminium electrolytic capacitors. It is completely separated from the
system control board and the main board so that no digital noise or magnetic interference can creep in
to affect the sound quality. As a double protection against digital noise, the signal processing block on
the main board is contained in a shielding case.
Standard Interfaces
The TCD-D10PRO mkII DAT Recorder features balanced XLR connectors that can be switched for
-60dBs microphone or +4 dBs line inputs. The digital I/O connector provides interfacing with AES/EBU
digital signals of 32, 44, 1 or 48 kHz sampling rate. This means that compatibility with other digital
systems, such as Sony's CD mastering system is assured with this single connector for the convenience
of digital dubbing and editing without quality degradation. For safety, the digital connector can be
locked at one touch and protected with a cap when not in use.
