Jury Selected For Auckland Shopkeeper

Murder Trial

A jury of 12 has been empanelled at the

High Court in Auckland for the trial of
two teenagers charged with the death
of West Auckland dairy owner Arun
Kumar.
Six men and six women were chosen
for jury duty on Tuesday morning as
supporters of the two boys charged
with Kumar's murder sat outside the
courtroom.
The two defendants have been allowed
to sit next to their lawyers and advocates
at a table rather than being in the dock.

The boys were aged 12 and 13 at the time

of the alleged offending in June last year.
The eldest of the pair is charged with
murder, the other manslaughter, and
both are charged with assault with intent
to rob following the death of Kumar at
his Henderson dairy.
Both have pleaded not guilty and have
name suppression.
Police said Kumar was stabbed to death
and died at the scene.
The crown's case is being heard in front
of Justice Graham Lang.

John Key's Fiji Visit In The Pipeline

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key
could visit Fiji this year.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Ratu Inoke
Kubuabola confirmed that the matter was
raised during consultations with New
Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Murray
McCully in Auckland in May this year.
We will let you know when it has been
firmed up, said Ratu Inoke.
At their Auckland meeting, the two foreign
ministers discussed progress with rebuilding
the countries relationship following their
earlier meeting last year in Nadi, Fiji.
Their talks covered bilateral issues, Pacific,
regional and global issues, including cooperation around New Zealands term on
the United Nations Security Council.
They agreed that the talks should become
an annual event, with the next session
taking place in Fiji next year.

Wife's Long Wait

A housewife waited in vain for her
husband to pick her up not knowing she
would never see him alive again.
Losana Ligani, 22, was at Lami Village
last Wednesday night when she last
spoke with her husband, Inosi Masaurua,
to pick her up from the Hansons
Supermarket bustop in Makoi.
Mr Masaurua, a technical officer with
the Water Authority of Fiji, had finished
work and told his wife he was drinking
grog at Nauluvatu in Samabula, Suva,
and he would come and pick her up
afterwards.
She waited and he didnt turn up; his
phone was also diverted. Early last
Thursday morning Mr Masaurua was
involved in an accident when a taxi
driven by a 27-year-old allegedly hit him
while he was trying to cross at Nasinu 4
miles.
He was admitted at the Colonial War
Memorial Hospitals Intensive Care Unit
and never recovered from a coma. He
died last Saturday afternoon.
The two had only been married
for nine months. Ms Ligani said

Fiji-Born Lawyer's Hunting Trip Turns

Fatal

An annual duck hunting trip turned fatal

for a 60-year-old Fiji-born New Zealand
lawyer last weekend when the boat he
was travelling capsized in Waikato River.
The deceased, Dhirendra Singh,
commonly known as Shean hailed from
Suva and migrated to New Zealand at
the age of 17 more than forty three years
ago on a scholarship to the University
of Auckland where he studied law and
went on to become one of country's most
well-known immigration lawyers.
He successfully entered the Supreme
Court in 2005 and was instrumental in
the establishment of the New Zealand
Immigration Advisers Authority.
His Mt Eden firm, Shean Singh
Barristers and Solicitors, specialises in
immigration and commercial law and
was founded after Mr Singh worked for
top firms, including Simpson Grierson.
Grieving family still expect dad's return
Dhirendra Singh came to New Zealand
as a 17-year-old with $20 in his pocket.
Forty-three years later he was one of
the country's top immigration lawyers
with his own firm who lived on a 2.5ha
lifestyle block with his family.
On Sunday, the husband and father of
four, known as Shean, died during an
annual duck hunting trip with mates on
the Waikato River.
His wife, Darsan, told the reporter how
the North Shore family - including their
children Shannon, Olivia, Christopher
and Elizabeth - were still expecting Mr
Singh to walk through the door.
"I don't feel like he's gone forever
because he's just gone for a trip and he's
going to be back. If this had happened at
a different time of year it would hit me
but for now I am so used to taking care
of things between May and June because

Lawyer Shean Singh died after the boat he was in capsized

it's the shooting season when he has his
boys' time."
Mr Singh and three friends went duck
shooting last Saturday, spending the night
on Ngahinapouri Island in Port Waikato.
During a break in the storm on Sunday
they tried to cross back to Hoods
Landing, but the boat capsized, throwing
the men into the river.
His friends were found clinging to trees
and were saved, but Mr Singh's body
was recovered from further up the river.
He was the first Indian lawyer to go to
the Supreme Court, in 2005, where he
was successful, and was instrumental in
the establishment of the New Zealand
Immigration Advisers Authority.
"He's a self-made man and very
disciplined in his own way, I really admire
him and am so lucky that I married him.
"He built a castle for me, he proposed to
me under a kauri tree and he said, 'I will

build a place where you can see the tree

every morning when you wake up', and
now I can see the tree from my bedroom.
"Then he built a treehouse for the children
in the tree. It was like a Cinderella dream
come true."
She said her husband had a strong worklife balance, starting work at 6am each
day and finishing at 3pm to spend time
with friends and family, and was known
for his sense of humour. Tributes had
been made to the family from all over
the world.
A funeral for Mr Singh was held at
North Shore Memorial Park in Albany
and prayers will continue until at the
Gurudwara Sahib temple in Takanini.
Mr Singh's death was among a number
of others this duck hunting season,
with 15-year-old James Johnston, from
Whakatane, and 21-year-old Josh Hill
fatally shot in separate incidents on May 11.

Lucky To Be Alive
Ravnil Chandra thanked God and
rescuers for saving him and his two-yearold son from plunging to their death.
We are lucky to be alive today. I thought
we were going to die, the Omkar Rd,
Narere, construction worker said in
Hindi from his Colonial War Memorial
Hospital bed.
He claimed they were victims of
dangerous driving by two drivers street
racing on Waimanu Road in Suva.
Mr Chandra and son Ayaan were
travelling towards CWM hospital, Suva,
to pick up his wife, a nurse Vinita Kumar,
who had finished night shift. He said
their car was hit by another car travelling
in the opposite direction on a bend.
He said the car allegedly failed to
negotiate the bend and crossed the centre
line as it chased another car at high
speed.
He said the impact of the crash pushed
their car off the road and down a cliff.
Luckily, the car was stopped by a
boulder where it hung precariously. If it
was not for the boulder, the car would
have plunged to the bottom of the cliff
and to their death, he said.
Because of the situation I was in, I never
thought I would come out alive. This is
the first time an accident has happened to
me, he said.
My hands and legs were shaking when
I was stuck in the car and I was only
thinking about my son. I could have had
a heart attack.
I was trapped in the car and I had no idea
who to call but I called for help. A group

of iTaukei people came to help me.

There was no rope to pull us out. The
rescuers held hands and pulled me and
my son out of the car.
Mr Chandra said that Ayaan fainted soon
after the crash and he thought his son
had died.
When Meli took Ayaan out, my son
began to cry so I was relieved, he said.
Meli Soko is a form six student of Ratu
Sir Lala Sukuna Memorial School. He
was the first person to reach the accident
scene. Mr Chandra thanked Meli and
others for coming to their rescue.
I am so thankful that my son has fewer
injuries than me but he is still scared,
he said.
I only drive at the speed of 40 km/h and

when my son is with me.

Meli said in iTaukei he saw the accident
happen.
These two cars were racing towards
CWM Hospital. The speeders could not
handle the bend at high speed. He cut
the bend and hit Mr Chandras car which
veered off the road as a result and went
down the cliff, Meli said.
I rescued the little boy and carried him
to the top. It is also miracle that they did
not suffer any serious injury. They were
shocked. The boy was crying but thats
to be expected in a situation like that,
he said.
Meli joined Mr Chandra in condemning
motorists who raced on streets. Police
are investigating.

Safeguarding Our Flag

Fiji has never had a law regarding the use,
protection and use of the Fijian flag, says
Solicitor-General Sharvada Sharma.
He made a submission to the
Parliamentary Standing Committee on
Justice, Law and Human Rights on the
National Flag Protection Bill 2015.
For the first time we have a law going
forward which provides for the use of
the flag which is respected by all Fijian
citizens as to how it can be displayed,
said Mr. Sharma.
Under the Bill, there are provisions for
penalties should the flag be misused,
manipulated or violated and the
restrictions on the use of the national flag
for commercial purposes.
In his submission, Mr Sharma also
backed proposed laws to protect the
Fijian Coat of Arms.
He said the amended Bill for an act to
declare the coat of arms of the Republic
of Fiji and to make provision for its use
will provide better protection for the
national symbol.
At the moment, public submissions have
been called for to amend the current
Fijian Coat of Arms.

Rahesh Chand, a 31-year-old shopkeeper

who was arrested last week for
allegations of receiving stolen property,
appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court
for unlawful possession of illicit drugs.
A raid was conducted at the accuseds
shop in Nabua after investigators
received information that he was
allegedly receiving stolen items.
The shopkeeper was arrested two
days after the raid when white powder
believed to be methamphetamines was
allegedly found in his possession.
Chands lawyer, Deepak Chand, made a
bail application stating that the accused
needed further medical examination and
treatment after claiming he was assaulted
while in Police custody for more than 48
hours.
Deepak Chand filed a medical report
to back his submission for a medical
examination.
Mr Chand alleged that while in custody
he was also not allowed to meet his
client until Sunday where his client was
transferred from Criminal Investigation
Department Headquarters in Toorak to
Raiwaqa Police Station.
He alleged that his client was assaulted

Solicitor-General Sharvada Sharma.

The current coat of arms features the
cross of Saint George, and a golden lion
that represented the United Kingdom,
Fijis former colonial rulers.
Opposition member, Niko Nawaikula
also questioned the need to change the
Fijian Coat of Arms.

Committee
chairperson
Ashneel
Sudhakar explained that the coat of arms
did not represent Fijis status as a truly
independent and sovereign nation.
The new flag will be officially declared
as our national flag before Fiji Day on
October 10 this year.

and forced to admit being in possession

of illegal drugs.
Prosecution served full phase of
disclosures, but objected to bail saying
the illicit drug possession charge was
serious.
This was overruled by Magistrate Neil
Rupasinghe.
The accused has been asked to present
two sureties; one his father and one
State-employed person on the bail bond
of $2000 each.
Chand has been granted bail on strict
bail conditions for him to report to
Nabua Police every Monday, Thursday
and Sunday.
The matter has been adjourned to June
12.
Police Chief of Investigations and
Intelligence ACP Henry Brown said the
raid was the outcome of investigations in
relation to a number of robberies in the
Southern Division where five men have
been charged and their case brought
before the courts.
Other items alleged to have been
proceeds from the sale of illicit drugs
were seized in the raid.
Meanwhile, investigators discovered

glue being sold at the Nabua shop despite

Rahesh Chand allegedly not having a
licence to sell the item.
ACP Brown said investigators have been
tasked to track down those receiving
stolen items and members of the public
are reminded to be cautious about
receiving or purchasing items if they
suspect them to be stolen.

Young Heart Gets New Lease Of Life

Twenty-six children diagnosed with
congenital heart defects met Minister for
Women, Children & Poverty Alleviation
Rosy Akbar at Colonial War Memorial
Hospital yesterday.
The minister paid a visit to the hospital
to meet the children.
There are many families who are not
able to afford this kind of operation. I
am grateful to the team in supporting 26
families because if we look into this an
average cost for a child to be operated
is about $30000. This is a great help for
them, Ms Akbar said.
We got associated with the Childrens
Heart Foundation in March where the
ministry supported the Walk for Life by
Michael Fong. He was raising funds and
since then we were building Childrens
Heart Foundation. We were told that there
were many children in the country that
need treatment and we are very grateful
to the international team from Australia.
Apart from conducting treatment on
the 26 children the team said there is a
need for more awareness conducted so
that people do not lose their loved ones
through these diseases.
I think the donor institute is doing a great

job. The ministry is looking forward in

supporting them ensuring that there is
not only awareness created amongst
families and across the country.
Janita Reddy could not hold her
emotions, describing how she felt about
her child receiving the operation to
improve her life.
She came all the way from Malolo, Nadi,
for the operation.
This is something big for us. We could

not really afford this. They are good to

me and I really appreciate this. Through
this operation she will live long, Mrs
Reddy said.
These days it is really hard to get
operations done. I would like to thank the
Bainimarama Government for helping
people. This is something unbelievable.
I always used to pray about my child and
finally shes getting what we wanted,
she said.

PM In Rome For Top Award

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama took a
flight to Rome where he will receive Fijis
award in the global fight against hunger.
The award is given by the Food &
Agriculture Organisations (FAO) of the
United Nations.
It recognises that Fiji has reduced the
prevalence of undernourishment from
6.6 per cent in 1990-1992, to 4.5per cent
in 2014-2016.
Mr Bainimarama confirmed his Rome
trip at Ucunivanua, Verata.
He was there to attend the funeral of
the late Ratu Mai Verata, Ratu Ifereimi
Waituitui Ravoka.
Im leaving for a FAO meeting in Rome
with the Minister for Agriculture, Rural
Development and National Disaster
Management, Mr Inia Seruiratu, he said.
Mr Seruiratu said the PM was invited
by FAO to attend the Special Events on
Recognizing notable and outstanding
progress in fighting hunger.
In June 2013, Fiji was awarded a
Diploma for having made good progress
in fighting hunger and for having reached
ahead of time the MDG Hunger target,
he said. MDG stands for Millennium

604.510.4088

Development Goals.
The result, he said, had confirmed that
Fiji had reduced the prevalence of
undernourishment from 6.6% in 19901992, to 4.5% in 2014-2016.
He said that the PM would be part of
the Panel to share Fijis experience
on the work of FAO with Small Island
Developing States in Capturing
New Opportunities and strengthening
partnership for concrete actions.
Mr Bainimarama would also attend a
Bilateral Meeting with The Director General
of FAO, which would include the signing of
the Host Country Agreement (HCA).
The HCA, Mr Seruiratu said, would
enable FAO to establish an office in
Suva, like other UN agencies, as part of
FAO decentralisation policy.
The FAO of the United Nations is an
agency of the United Nations established
in 1945 that leads international efforts to
defeat hunger. Serving both developed
and developing countries, FAO acts as
a neutral forum where all nations meet
as equals to negotiate agreements and
debate policy.
FAO is also a source of knowledge

and information, and helps developing

countries and countries in transition
modernize and improve agriculture,
forestry and fisheries practices, ensuring
good nutrition and food security for all.
Its Latin mottoFiat Panis translates as
Let there be bread.
Achieving food security for all is at the
heart of FAOs efforts to make sure
people have regular access to enough highquality food to lead active, healthy lives.

Fiji-France Military Exchange

Fijian soldiers will soon leave for New
Caledonia as part of an exchange training
programme with the French army.
The two-year mutual military agreement
was signed between the Republic of Fiji
Military Forces and the French Army
last year.
RFMF Land Force Commander Colonel
Sitiveni Qiliho said the reconnaissance
process would be completed before they
would get through the final preparatory
phase.
There are reconnaissance elements that
have arrived to look at the exercise areas
that they will be exercising in. They are
coming to do exercises in Fiji and we
will be sending a platoon across to New
Caledonia for training also, Colonel
Qiliho said.
The whole spectrum of jungle warfare,
they will be trained in, to experience our
tough terrain here in Fiji and for us to
also experience their terrain that they
have to offer us. It is also an exchange
of trainings that the skills they have we
can gain and for them to gain from what

we have. So it is a mutual exchange

programme.
The French Deputy Head of Mission
Jules Irrmann said the training would
mutually benefit both the countries.
We had a trade mission that came last
week to check all the conditions and to

prepare this next mission but we have

no precise timing as to when they will
come down, however it should not be
that late, Mr Irrman said.
The French Navy has also been in Fiji
to assist the Fiji Navy in maritime
surveillance duty.

GPH Boss Quits To Take Up New Job

Eugen Diethelm, general manager
of Grand Pacific Hotel, in Suva, has
resigned.
Mr Diethelm, 60, said he had received
a fantastic offer for a top job to manage
a city hotel in his home country of
Switzerland. He said after 19 years of
working overseas, he was returning home.
He declined to reveal the name of
the hotel and the city. When he was
asked whether complaints against his
management style by disgruntled former
staff had forced him to quit, he said: It
made me look around. When you have
to make a decision like this, you have to
think very clearly. Should I consider this
offer or not?
He dismissed as lies all the allegations
made against him by disgruntled sacked
workers.
He said the employment of between 20
to 30 people was terminated with reason.
It was absolutely normal and there was
no other way.
We followed the Fiji law, he said.
He said the workers refused to listen to
my HOD.

Some came late to work many, many,

times, some did not come to work, some
came drunk to work, some didnt want
to work in another department, he said.
Some did not like a transfer. They went to
Immigration, Police, Labour, even the PM.
He said they went on and on and even to
Parliament.
He said it was time consuming
responding to the allegations and writing
reports. He said he should have spent the
time doing work for the hotel.
Heads of Department rallied behind their
boss and said they would miss him.

Italian Jonatha Ramaccionc, the

restaurant manager, said he backed Mr
Diethelm because the hotel was there to
provide service.
Frenchman Ringeisen Georges, the
executive chef, said of the workers if
you do not like to work in a company,
you leave.
When you have a five-star hotel
opening, you have a turnover, he said.
Nancy Chute, front office manager,
said: I have learned so much under the
direction of Mr Diethelm.
Melania Dikoula, executive housekeeper,
praised Mr Diethelm for his leadership.
Mr Diethelm is a highly qualified
experienced hotelier who has worked
in many countries including Thailand,
Cambodia, Zambia and Dubai. His twoyear contract was up and he would finish
in 30 days.
He said he enjoyed his time in Fiji and
was happy to be leaving at a time of big
success. He said the hotel was running
at 75 per cent to 80 per cent room
occupancy rate. In the next three days, it
would jump to 100 per cent.

PM Bainimarama Takes The Pledge

PRIME Minister Voreqe Bainimarama
became the latest person to pledge to assist
in allowing fish species of kawakawa
(brown marbled grouper and camouflage
grouper) and donu (black saddle coral
grouper, squaretail grouper, leopard coral
grouper and blue rock cod) to spawn.
Mr Bainimarama joined those who
pledged to stay away from buying,
selling or eating these fish species from
June to September.
4FJ communications officer Alumeci
Nakeke said 4FJ was a movement to

protect the Fijian way of life.

June 1 began another day for the
movement to call on Fijians to refrain
from fishing kawakawa and donu.
"The two fish are ingrained in Fijian
culture as demonstrated by the tradition
of setting them aside for chiefs but the
increase in demand has also seen the fish
stocks declining across Fiji to about 70
per cent in the landings or where fish is
sold," she said.
She added that because the groupers
spawn in the months of June to

September, there was a huge need to

allow them to do so without hunting
them during these months.
"These fish species come together when
it's their spawning season and most
times before the female species release
their eggs, people are already catching
them and it stops the cycle of allowing
them to breed.
"All we're asking is give them the months
of June to September, just four months to
allow them to breed before we can start
eating them again."

ABOUT 480 private vehicles are

operating as illegal transport providers
in Lautoka alone, says the Fiji Taxi
Association Lautoka branch.
Its president, Mohammed Shameem,
said the number of private vehicles
masquerading as taxis was increasing
and legitimate operators were suffering
because of the illicit transport trade.

"This is from a survey that we did and

in terms of the impact on our members,
they are losing about 50 per cent of their
income," he said.
Drivers in the Sugar City said they used
to earn about $60 a day but with the
increase in private cars illegally operating
as taxis over the past few years, earnings
had dropped to an average of $35 daily.

"This is a huge reduction for our members

and even though we are offering a 24hour service, the illegal vehicles are
under-cutting us. If this trend continues
then a lot of legitimate taxi operators
will be forced out of business."
About 300 registered taxi operators in
Lautoka are members of the Fiji Taxi
Association.

A BRIGHTER future has unfolded for

three-year-old Shiresh Nitish Maharaj
following a successful surgery.
His relieved parents, Roseleen and
Shalveen Maharaj, were emotional when
they were interviewed.
Shiresh was among the first four people who
went under the knife on Monday morning.
His father Shalveen said their son was
diagnosed with congenital heart defect

after he was born.

From that time until last year, he said
they had been running to and from
looking for gifts and aid so they could
send their son to India for treatment.
Mr Maharaj said they were lucky after
doctors at the CWM Hospital informed
them about the Australian surgeons.
He said they did not hesitate as they
made arrangements with the doctors

until everything was settled.

"We kept cross-checking with the
doctors just to keep us updated on when
the team will be here," Mr Maharaj said.
"We left Sigatoka last month just to be
on time for my son's operation."
He said he was overwhelmed and
grateful for the support he had been
receiving from his friends, families and
those who knew them personally.

Name Change For Global Parent

Company

THE parent company for a number of

renowned brands including the iconic
FIJI Water has changed its name to
reflect its long-standing passion for
harvesting healthy and nutritious foods.
Roll Global is now The Wonderful
Company and had integrated their
approach to farming and distribution.
In a statement, co-owner and president
of the company Stewart Resnick said
they established the vertical structure
of growing, harvesting, packaging and
delivering their products to customers
to ensure their quality standards were
maintained.
FIJI Water CEO Rokoseru Nabalarua
said the name change would not affect
operations in the country.
"We will continue to move on and
operate it doesn't change anything
for us, only our parent company has
changed its name," he said.
"We will continue to do business and we
will move on with what we're doing."
He said they had received positive

response for the roll-out of FIJI Water's

new packaging.
"It's going very well. Right now it's Fiji
and America and we are rolling it out
globally because it's a big process but
feedback has been very positive so far,"
he said.

Water bottling company, Natural Waters

of Viti Ltd, had launched the redesigned
label for its FIJI Water bottles in January
this year.
The new look design was launched
by FIJI Water global president David
Ricanati.

Museum Best Place To Learn

The museum is the best place to
disseminate information to our youths
about Fijis history, says the University
of the South Pacifics Associate Professor
Mohit Prasad.
The Fiji Museum in collaboration with
the Department of Heritage and Arts,
the Fiji Arts Council, National Trust of
Fiji and the National Archives of Fiji
organised the open day. Mr Prasad was
chief guest at the event.
The open-day focused on heritage,

culture and arts, connecting Fiji to its

past, present and future.
Mr Prasad said: There are many artifacts
and exhibitions in the museum and this
should have an impact on our younger
generation to learn about Fijis history
and they will be able to experience.
The museums head of marketing
Prakashni Sharma said: The youths now
have modern life, yet they all have to know
more about their culture and tradition.
The most important thing for youths is

to learn about our history, Ms Sharma

said.
Year 11 student of Marist Brothers
High School, Wilson Young, said: I
feel special to be here and some of my
colleagues are from overseas so it will be
good experience for them and we expect
to learn new things.
Gizelle Fong, who was born in Fiji but
lives in the United States, said: Its my
first time in six years to come in to Fiji
and the first thing I wanted was to see the
museum.
I am very impressed and always
wanted to see the Reverends missing
shoe. When I was in America I had to
do projects on Fijis history and they
always talked about the Reverend and
him coming to Fiji.
Craftsman Isaac Tivaknqa had on display
his designed Yaka frames at the event.
Most of the items such as timber, tapa
and magi magi on my yaka frames are
manufactured in Fiji and I have bought
them here to selling, he said.
Marist Brothers High School teacher
Delava Josefo said: Its an opportunity
for children to come and know what their
ancestors have experienced in the past.
The Fiji Museum Day will be held next
month with different topics.

Chinese Province Of Guangdong To

Strengthen Shipping Ties
The Chinese Province of Guangdong
is looking to strengthening sea and air
connectivity between the two countries.
Vice Mayor of Guangdong Luo Weifeng
highlighted this at the Fiji-China
(Guangdong) Economic and Trade
Cooperation Conference held at the
Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva this week.
We want to strengthen connectivity in
shipping and air routes, promote sister
ports relations between Guangzhou Ports
and Fijian Ports, he told the delegates.
And also establish a co-operation in
logistics and transportation.
Twenty-one Memorandums of Understanding
valued at US$330 million (F$690 million)
were signed at the conference which varies
from private partnership to sister partnerships.
Silk Road inclusion

Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed

in 2013 that China and countries along
the ancient Maritime Silk Road would
build together a new Maritime Silk Road
of the 21st Century.
Mr Luo said they want to further
strengthen maritime ties with Fiji, and in
doing so induct Fiji to be a part of the
21st Century Maritime Silk Road plan.
International reports mention that China
has engaged countries like Malaysia and
Africa to be part of the plan.
Guangdong is willing to seize the
important opportunity of building the
21st Century Maritime Silk Road, and to
enhance all-round friendly co-operation
with Fiji, furthering Sino-Fiji ties.
President Xi did this in order to revive the
ancient Maritime Silk Road and bring more

benefits to the relevant countries and peoples.

The aim is to inject strong impetus in
enhancing political mutual trust and
deepening economic cooperation.
It also promotes culture as well as people-topeople exchanges among relevant countries
through joint cooperation, common
development and regional integration.
Such an initiative draws inspiration
both from history and from latest
developments in the 21st century.
All countries along the Maritime Silk
Road are welcome to plan, develop and
benefit together from the initiative.
Before it used to take an average sized vessel
up to three days to discharge and load cargo.
With the yard and ship planning system
in place, this two days has now been
reduced to just under 24 hours.

The United States government has lifted the

ban on the sale of military equipment to Fiji.
Although the Fijian Government sources
could not confirm this, overseas media
have reported that an announcement was
made last Friday in the Federal Register
that the change in the defence trade
policy was a result of Fijis credible and

democratic elections last September.

The ban came into place following the
events of 2006.
The Minister for Immigration, National
Security and Defence, Timoci Natuva,
declined to comment until an official
statement was released by the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs.

The Obama administration has stepped up

US engagement with Pacific island nations
as it vies for regional influence with China.
October last year, the US said it was
exploring opportunities to resume
engaging with Fijis military, including
in training exercises and co-operating on
issues of global concern.

A 37-year-old father of Lautoka has been

sentenced to 16 years imprisonment
after he indecently assaulted and raped
his two daughters.
The man was sentenced by the Lautoka
High Court and the offence took place
between the 1st of January, 2006 to 22nd
of February, this year.
While sentencing the man, Lautoka
High Court Judge, Justice Thushara
Rajasinghe pointed out that this is a

case of an incestuous father, using his

two daughters for surrogate sexual
gratification.
Justice Rajasinghe says parents are the
only trusted and dependable persons that
a child has in her growing tender years.
In this case, Judge Rajasinghe says
the two victims are his own biological
daughters and he has abused the trust
and confidence they have for him as their
father.

He highlighted that the man deceitfully

plotted this crime on his daughters by
using his position in the family.
Justice Rajasinghe says the 37-year-old
man threatened his wife not to report the
shameful act to the police, making her
helpless against this act.
The judge says they had no escape but to
surrender to his monstrous and devilish act.
The man will be eligible for parole after
completing his 15 years prison sentence.

No Such Thing As A Free Lunch, Canteen

lunch. At least according to a US school The 35-year-old told CBS Denver: I
district that fired a canteen manager had a first grader in front of me, crying,
for feeding kids with no money to pay. because she doesnt have enough money
Della Curry, a US mum-of-two, said for lunch. Yes, I gave her lunch.
that while she knew was doing was Ms Curry had supervised food
legally wrong she would do it again in preparation at Dakota Valley Elementary

School in Aurora, Colorado, for a year.

She told the station that during that time
she had paid for kids lunches several
times out of her own pocket.
The school gives children free lunches
but only if their family income is under
$31,000. Families that bring in $45,000
are eligible for discounted lunches.
But Ms Curry said that she had helped
the kids of families that earn above that
threshold who were often still struggling
financially.
If they forget their lunch money these
kids are given a slice of cheese in a
hamburger and a small carton of milk,
she said.
In a Facebook post she said: I will never
understand how the best country in the
world considers a cheese sandwich to be

Parent Darnell Hill told CBS Ms Curry
had helped out his son when he forgot
his lunch money.
Mr Hill said: Do something different
than fire her. Shes trying to help.
This view was echoed on social media
where there was an outcry against Ms
Currys firing.

Malaysia Airlines Confirms 6,000 Job

Losses In Restructure; CEO Says Carrier
'Technically Bankrupt'

Malaysia Airlines has outlined plans

for a major restructure that will see the
carrier slash around 6,000 jobs as it
struggles to stay in business.
The plan, released on Monday by
email, said the airline would begin
operations under a new brand on
September 1.
About 14,000 of the roughly 20,000
existing employees are expected to
receive offer letters to remain with the
restructured airline, it said.
Malaysia's national carrier is also
expected to pull back drastically from
unprofitable long-haul routes such as to
Europe, and focus instead on regional
traffic as it regroups.
The announcement marks the first
concrete move by newly-appointed
CEO Christoph Mueller as he seeks to
repair the embattled airline's reputation
following the loss of two jets in separate

604.510.4088

disasters in 2014.
"We are technically bankrupt ... the
decline of performance started long
before the tragic events of 2014,"
Mr Mueller said, speaking at a news
conference.
In March of last year, flight MH370
disappeared with 239 passengers and
crew aboard and remains missing.
Four months later, flight MH17 was
destroyed by a suspected ground-to-air
missile over Ukraine.
The tragedies were the final straw for
an airline that analysts say had already
been poorly managed for years, slipping
further into the red.
Mr Mueller was making his first public
appearance as CEO since being hired
last month by the carrier's owner,
Malaysian state fund Khazanah, to lead
the restructuring.
The state investment fund said last

info@fijitimescanada.com

year that around 6,000 jobs would be

lost.
Monday's announcement said the airline
planned to "stop the bleeding" in 2015,
stabilise next year, and seek to start
growing again by 2017.
Analysts have long blamed the
airline's failure to compete on poor
management,
unwise
business
decisions, government meddling, and
unfavourable service and supplier
contracts stemming from Malaysia's
crony capitalism.
The blueprint called for the renegotiating
or resetting of major contracts, and
a major revitalisation of technology,
training, and business operations.
Mr Mueller warned last month a major
overhaul was necessary as the airline
was weighed down by "uncompetitive
cost levels" that he said were 20 per cent
higher than its rivals.

Hearty Red Foods

Red is the colour most associated with
love, passion, intensity andheart
health? There are many red-coloured
foods that are good for the bodys most
important muscle. Here's a list of popular
red foods to add to your regular diet that
will keep your heart healthy and beating
strong.
Cherries
The tart versions of cherries have been
touted by scientists as powerful diseasefighting antioxidants that may help
reduce certain risk factors for heart
disease. Cherries are also one of the
few food sources of melatonin, a potent
antioxidant that may help improve a
persons natural sleep patterns. Besides
eating them on their own, also try adding
cherries to a fruit salad or poach them
and use as a topping on a low-fat ice
cream or frozen yogurt.
Dark Red Kidney Beans
Kidney beans have hugely beneficial
cardiovascular effects. They are an
exceptional source of cholesterollowering fibre and also contain large
amounts of magnesium and folate, all
of which contribute to heart health by
reducing the chances of heart disease
and heart attacks. Use kidney beans in
stews, chilies or minestrone soup.
Pomegranate
Pomegranate has a large number of
beneficial
antioxidants
including
polyphenols, anthocyanins and tannins.
This seedy apple is also wonderfully
rich in fibre and a great source of vitamins
C and E. Pomegranate juice contains
the highest level of antioxidants among
most other fruit juices, red wine and tea.
Studies have shown that drinking a daily
glass of pomegranate juice fights off the
risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of the
arteries) and related diseases such as
heart attacks and strokes.
Red Delicious Apples
The Red Delicious apple with its
crisp, yellow flesh is a natural energy
booster that contains vitamin C as well
as potassium, a mineral which helps
control blood pressure and reduce
the risk of stroke. The apple is also a
high source of pectin, which prevents
cholesterol build-up and thus reduces the
risk of heart disease. This apple variety
is available year round, making it the
perfect everyday snack food.
Red Bell Peppers
This sweet-tasting bell pepper contains
vitamin B6 and folic acid, both of which

604.510.4088

are important vitamins in reducing the

risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of
the arteries) and diabetic heart disease.
The red bell pepper is also an excellent
source of vitamin C, an antioxidant that
may be effective in preventing certain
cancers. Because it is in good supply all
year round, it wont be hard to add this
healthy red vegetable to your daily diet.
Chop up red bell peppers and add them
to salads, pasta dishes or stir fries. Carve
them out and stuff them with rice or just
slice them up and eat them raw!
Red snapper
Like most fish, the red snapper is high in
protein, low in saturated fat and a great
source of Omega-3 essential fatty acids.
Consuming fish rich in Omega-3 fats
increases heart rate variability (HRV),
a measure of cardiac function. Studies
have shown that with greater variability
between beats, the risk of arrhythmia
(irregular heart beat) or sudden death
is significantly reduced. Omega-3s also
make blood less likely to clot inside
arteries (clogged arteries are the ultimate
cause of most heart attacks and strokes).
The moist flesh of the red snapper has a
delicate sweet flavour. Serve it broiled,

baked, steamed, fried, grilled or any

other way you like.
Strawberries
The strawberry contains more vitamin
C than any other berry. In addition to
containing potassium, folic acid, iron
and fibre, strawberries are also rich in
a phytonutrient called phenols. The
presence of phenols is what gives this
red-coloured berry the reputation of
being an anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory
and heart-protective fruit all rolled into
one. Strawberries are great for eating on
their own or used in salads, cereals and
as a dessert topping.
From cherry to grape, plum to vine, hot
house to sundried, there are virtually
thousands of varieties of the tomato.
Tomatoes are high in vitamin C and
beta carotene as well as lycopene, a
carotenoid that has been found to protect
against a growing list of cancers and
also prevent heart disease. Tomatoes can
easily be incorporated into your daily
diet and into just about any meal. Use
them in omelettes, sandwiches, salads,
pastas and more. Fresh tomatoes are
also excellent for making an authentic,
homemade Mexican salsa.

Desk Bound Jobs, Changed Life Style

Causes Knee Arthritis

While many call 40 as the old age of

youth, doctors say this could well mark
the beginning of ailments typically
associated with elderly.
In a Knowledge Exchange Programme
organised by Cygnus Orthocare Hospital,
its Chief Orthopedic Surgeon and
Medical Director, Dr Pankaj Bajaj said,
''Due to desk bound jobs and changed
life style, food habits, knee arthritis is
on rise among those in their to 40s, in
addition to the elderly.''
''We were facing problems in knee
transplant earlier as the artificial knees

designed by most of the companies of US

were for US and European population.
But for the first time Freedom Knee
company has designed the artificial
knees for Asian people keeping their
body structure in mind,'' he said.
It is better in fitting for Asians especially
Indians, he claimed.
Asked about the life span of an artificial
knee transplant, he said, ''Average
age of a knee transplant in a patient is
approximately 20 years. However, it can
increase, depending on patient's physical
activity and body type.''

Regular exercise, outdoor activities

combined with good nutritious diets
were the key to avoid knee arthritis.
''Vitamin D, which we get from sun, can
also make people more resistant to such
diseases,'' he added.
Talking about the cost angle Mr Bajaj said
a single knee transplant costs nearly 2 lakh.
Dr David H Gibson, a well known orthopedic
from US said, artificial knees designed for
European and US natives are generally
broader in shape. These ones exclusively
made for Asians are less broad as per the
body structure of people living India.

Foods To Avoid During Gastritis

Gastritis is a common phenomenon among young as well as adults.

It is always beneficial to plan your

gastritis diet to avoid further aggravation
of the problem. People suffering from
gastritis often neglect their diet and eat
anything and everything to keep their
stomach full. They miss the point that
various foods increase the problem
and lead to complications like stomach
cancer in the long run. So, it is very
important to have a sound knowledge
about what to eat and what to avoid
when one is suffering from gastritis.
The thumb rule is one must strictly stay
away from spicy food items that are bad
for digestive health. Following a high
fibre diet is always necessary for healthy
intestinal functioning. A specially
designed gastritis diet plan will always

prove more than helpful for people

suffering from this condition. Along
with your personalized diet plan, you
must consider the following instructions
while you're sorting through the foods
to avoid during gastritis. Keep in mind
the following things before you pick a
platter when your stomach is suffering
from gastritis:
-Avoid, at all costs, deep-fried and fatty
food.
-Don't have pickles, peppers, spicy and
very salty food products.
-Avoid vinegar and food items made
using vinegar.
-Cut on caffeine, alcoholic drinks, citric
acid drinks and mustard. It is a myth that
soft drinks help in gastritis. Reality is,

they don't.
-Include foods rich in flavonoids, such
as apples, cranberries, garlic and onions
as they help in curbing the growth of
gastritis-causing bacteria.
-Avoid high fat and high cholesterol
foods as they are pretty hard on the
digestive system and can certainly
aggravate the condition.
-Avoid gorging on meat like beef, fried
fish and pork.
-Avoid dairy products like milk shakes,
sour creams, cheese and ice creams.
-Avoid heavy chocolate chip cookies,
butter biscuits, cakes, donuts, brownies
and other baked food items.
-Don't overload your stomach. A simple
vegetable stew will help you the most.

A new study suggests that people with

diets higher in protein, especially from
fish, may be less likely to have a stroke
than those with diets lower in protein.
"The amount of protein that led to the
reduced risk was moderate-equal to 20
grams per day," study author Xinfeng
Liu, MD, PhD, of Nanjing University
School of Medicine in Nanjing, China
said.
"Additional, larger studies are needed
before definitive recommendations can
be made, but the evidence is compelling,"
Liu said.
The meta-analysis looked at all of the
available research on the relationship
between protein in the diet and the risk

of stroke. Seven studies with a total of

254,489 participants who were followed
for an average of 14 years were included
in the analysis.
Overall, the participants with the highest
amount of protein in their diets were 20
percent less likely to develop a stroke
than those with the lowest amount of
protein in their diets.
The results accounted for other factors

that could affect the risk of stroke, such

as smoking and high cholesterol.
For every additional 20 grams per day
of protein that people ate, their risk of
stroke decreased by 26 percent.
"If everyone's protein intake were at this
level, that would translate to more than
1.4 million fewer deaths from stroke
each year worldwide, plus a decreased
level of disability from stroke," Liu said.

New Study Confirms Link Between Sleep

Apnea And Diabetes

A new study of more than 8,500 Canadian

patients has demonstrated a link between
obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and the
development of diabetes.
It confirms earlier evidence of such a
relationship from smaller studies with
shorter follow-up periods.
"Our study, with a larger sample size and
a median follow-up of 67 months was
able to address some of the limitations
of earlier studies on the connection
between OSA and diabetes," lead author
Tetyana Kendzerska, MD, PhD, of the
University of Toronto said.
"We found that among patients with
OSA, the initial severity of the disease
predicted the subsequent risk for incident
diabetes," Kendzerska said.

The study included 8,678 adults with

suspected OSA without diabetes at
baseline who underwent a diagnostic
sleep study between 1994 and 2010 and
were followed through May 2011 using
provincial health administrative data to
examine the occurrence of diabetes.
Sleep apnea severity was assessed with
the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), which
indicates severity based on the number
of apneas (complete cessation of airflow)
and hypopneas (partial cessation of
airflow) per hour of sleep. Patients were
classified as not having OSA, or having
mild, moderate or severe OSA.
During follow-up, 1,017 (11.7 percent)
patients developed diabetes.
In analyses adjusting for known risk

factors for diabetes, including age, sex,

body mass index, neck circumference,
smoking,
income
status
and
comorbidities at baseline, patients with
an AHI greater than 30 had a 30 percent
higher risk of developing diabetes than
those with an AHI less than 5.
Patients with mild or moderate OSA had
a 23 percent increased risk of developing
diabetes.
Other risk factors for diabetes included
AHI during rapid eye movement
sleep and measures of the physiologic
consequences of OSA, including oxygen
desaturation, sleep deprivation and
activation of the sympathetic nervous
system, as indicated by a higher mean
heart rate during sleep.

Why The Doctor Asks For A Urine Sample

It's probably safe to say that no one really

likes giving a urine sample. But the fact
is that few tests can match the routine
urine analysis for telling your doctor
about what's going on inside your body.
The bladder can hold almost 2 cups of
urine for two to five hours comfortably,
and excretes about 2 quarts of waste
products and additional water daily.
And just as you use a dipstick to check
your car's engine oil, doctors rely on a
specially treated "dipstick," a plastic
stick that has segments imbedded with
different chemical indicators on it, to
test urine. Unusual amounts of certain
substances in your urine can indicate
conditions ranging from minor urinary
tract infections to diabetes and other
more serious conditions.
One portion of the dipstick, for instance,
measures the specific gravity (a measure
of the amount of substances dissolved
in the urine). The higher the specific
gravity, the more concentrated the urine
is. Using a numerical scale, the dipstick

shows whether you're drinking enough

fluids and how well your kidneys are
filtering wastes from your body. Very
concentrated urine suggests you are
probably not drinking enough fluids,
making it harder for your body to flush
wastes. Urine is normally darker - more
concentrated - in the morning, because
your body's been storing wastes all night.
The dipstick registers the presence of
a variety of chemicals that the kidneys
filter, such as glucose (sugar) or minerals.
Healthy people generally don't excrete
sugar in their urine. Its presence may
mean that you have diabetes or another
condition that prevents your body from
efficiently converting blood sugar into
energy.
The urine test also can indicate infections
by measuring nitrites and leukocytes.
Bacteria produce an enzyme that converts
nitrates, which are normally present
in urine to nitrites. Leukocytes are the
white blood cells that fight infection.
The presence of either indicates that

your body may be fighting an infection

in the bladder or somewhere else along
the urinary tract. They also can indicate
something even more serious, such as
a tumor, but further tests are needed to
confirm these findings.
The dipstick gauges protein and pH
levels. Urine shouldn't contain much,
if any, protein, although some perfectly
normal people do excrete tiny amounts.
Urine pH, or acidity, normally ranges
between 4.5 and 8, with most people's
urine falling between 5.5 and 6.5.
Significantly high protein or pH levels
can suggest kidney or other renal
dysfunction.
Ketones can be detected by dipsticks.
They are substances produced when fat
is used by the body for energy. They
are eliminated from the body in the
urine. Large amounts of urinary ketones
indicate a diet low in carbohydrates,
starvation, or, in a person with diabetes,
a dangerous condition known as diabetic
ketoacidosis.

Every time you hit the dance floor to

the sound of loud music, you may risk
losing your capacity to hear. But those
with a substandard diet could be more
vulnerable.
"People with healthy diets who eat
adequate fruit and vegetables, have
better hearing thresholds than people
with a poor diet, according to large
population databases," Colleen Le Prell,

professor at Florida University, was

quoted as saying.
Studies on animals have shown that
dietary supplements such as vitamins
A, C, E and magnesium can prevent
hearing loss by reducing inflammation
and swelling and increasing the blood
supply to the inner ear.
Results are now expected next month
of two recent clinical trials in humans

that have studied whether dietary

supplements and a new drug can protect
hearing after exposure to a loud noise.
This may mean we will be able to protect
our ears by popping a vitamin pill before
going out clubbing, as reported.
However, experts warned that however
effective a pill turns out to be, noise
avoidance is the best strategy to prevent
hearing loss.

Bikini Detox-Friendly Foods

Forget the fad diets or starvation, a
simple detox will get your body beachready.
Ladies, its swimsuit time. But before
you panic and attempt the latest fad diet,
relax. Theres a healthy, fast way to get
yourself bikini-ready: a detox.
Detoxing is the ideal method for losing
a few kilograms. It also motivates you to
take control of your diet and inspires you
to continue eating well after the program
is over.
Why detox?
We are exposed to toxins every day and
a build-up can affect our neurological,
immune and endocrine (hormone)
systems. The most common offenders are
air pollution, food additives, pesticides,
alcohol, cigarette smoke and heavy metals.
When large amounts of toxins are
consumed over a long period of time,
health issues arise. By following a detox
diet you reduce the toxic load and enable
the body to function more efficiently.
Detoxing simply requires a little discipline
and a fridge full of nourishing foods.
This plan consists of a preparation week
followed by two full weeks of detoxing.
Week 1: Preparation
Planning is the key to success. Go
shopping and get ready for the next two
weeks.
In week one, start weaning off caffeine
and alcohol. If you drink two cups of
coffee a day, reduce it to one or every
second day. This early stage is aimed at
limiting potential withdrawal symptoms
that vary from a light headache to
migraines, nausea and low energy levels.
Start to up your water intake.
Foods to include
Fresh vegetables: broccoli, carrots,
snow peas, cabbage, asparagus,
sweet potato, onions, celery,
artichoke, beetroot, spinach and
swiss chard
Sprouts: mung beans and alfalfa
Fresh fruit: blueberries, strawberries,
apples, passion fruit, pear, pineapple,
kiwifruit, mango and all citrus
varieties
Nuts and seeds: unsalted raw
almonds, brazil nuts, cashews,
pecans, walnuts, and pumpkin,
sunflower, sesame and chia seeds
Gluten-free grains: brown rice,
millet and quinoa
Legumes: chickpeas, kidney beans
and lentils
Soy: tofu
Protein: fish, eggs, chicken, turkey

604.510.4088

and lamb
Beverages: filtered water, herbal tea,
green tea, unsweetened organic soy,
rice and almond milk
Extras: tamari sauce, sea salt, pepper,
cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil,
apple cider vinegar, flaxseed oil, organic
honey, almond or cashew spread
Foods to avoid
Grains containing gluten: oats, rye,
triticale and wheat (white/wholemeal
breads, wheat pasta, spelt, couscous)
Protein: beef, pork, shellfish, bacon,
sausages and preserved meats
Dairy: milk, yogurt, cheese and butter
Sugars: sweets, chocolate, jams and fruit
spreads
Processed items: canned foods, packaged
foods, frozen foods, chips and breakfast
cereals
Refined foods: white rice, white breads,
biscuits, cakes and pastries
Fast foods: hot chips, burgers and fried
treats
Beverages: alcohol, coffee, black tea,
soft drinks, cordial and commercial
juices
Extras:
table
salt,
margarine,
polyunsaturated spreads, peanut butter,
commercial dressings and sauces,
artificial colours, flavours, additives,
flavour enhancers and hydrogenated fats.
The bikini detox must-dos
Drink at least two litres of pure
water each day
Eliminate alcohol
Choose organic wherever possible.
Onions, broccoli, kale and cabbage
are top vegetables for cleansing.
They help the liver convert toxins to
harmless substances to be excreted
out of the body
Exercise daily
Useful tips
Start the day with a glass of freshly
squeezed lemon juice in water.
This enhances digestion and liver
detoxification. Dont throw out the
peel; the nutrients in lemon zest further
promote liver detoxification. Add the
zest to salads, cooked quinoa or fish.
Sip on green tea throughout the day. It
will help manage coffee withdrawal plus
provide the body with antioxidants to
help neutralise toxins. Green tea does
contain caffeine, but its only a small
amount and the benefits outweigh the
minimal caffeine levels.
Add fresh herbs to meals, especially
coriander. This delicious herb has a
unique detoxifying action and goes

info@fijitimescanada.com

particularly well with stir-fries, fish and

salads.
Did you know? Chewing each mouthful
of food 10 to 12 times improves digestion
and allows you to feel a sense of fullness
without overeating.
Week 2: Detox
Welcome to the first week of your
new and improved eating plan. Pack
your meals with the fresh and healthy
ingredients you bought in week one.
Your new mantra is avoid processed
food. Think about everything youre
putting into your body. Will it help you
fit into your bikini or not?
A typical day would look like this:
BREAKFAST: Cooked quinoa topped
with pumpkin seeds, flaked almonds and
blueberries plus half a cup of almond
milk, and green tea
SNACK: Seasonal fruit and a white tea.
LUNCH: A big salad with any vegetables
you like. Try a rocket, sprouts, snow
peas, onions and celery salad with
grilled organic lamb and lemon dressing.
(Lamb is recommended as it is generally
chemical-free and grass-fed.)
SNACK: Homemade hummus with a
selection of vegetable sticks, and green tea.
DINNER: Grilled salmon seasoned with
fresh herbs and lemon juice accompanied
by steamed greens and sweet potato
mash.
During the first week of the detox,
your body should start releasing the
built-up toxins into your bloodstream.
Unfortunately the more toxins that
currently exist in your tissues, the
more likely you are to suffer from the
following symptoms:
Headache
Tiredness
Muscle and joint pain
Flu-like symptoms
Stomach cramps
Wind pain
Diarrhoea
Skin eruptions
Although these symptoms are common,
the majority of cases are generally mild.
Hang in there these will pass by the
end of the week.
Eating clean and detoxifying meals in week
two can result in a weight loss of between
one and two kilograms, depending on the
individual. Your exercise levels are crucial
this week, too. Get out and walk, take the
stairs or get moving.

Things Kids Can Do To Stop Violence

1. Settle arguments with words, not fists
or weapons. Don't stand around and
form an audience.
2. Learn safe routes for walking in the
neighborhood, and know good places
to seek help. Trust your feelings, and if
there's a sense of danger, get away fast.
3. Report any crimes or suspicious
actions to the police, school authorities,
and parents. Be willing to testify if
needed.

4. Don't open the door to anyone you and

your parents don't know and trust.
5. Never go anywhere with someone you
and your parents don't know and trust.
6. If someone tries to abuse you, say
no, get away, and tell a trusted adult.
Remember, it's not the victim's fault.
7. Don't use alcohol and other drugs, and
stay away from places and people
associated with them.
8. Stick with friends who are also against

violence and drugs, and stay away from

known trouble spots.
9. Get involved to make school safer and
better - having poster contests against
violence, holding anti-drug rallies, counseling
peers, settling disputes peacefully. If there's
no program, help start one!
10. Help younger children learn to avoid
being crime victims. Set a good example
and volunteer to help with community
efforts to stop crime.

Refuse to bring a weapon to
school, refuse to carry a weapon for
someone else, and refuse to keep silent
about those who carry weapons.

Report any crime immediately
to school authorities or police.

Report suspicious behavior or
talk by other students to a teacher or
counselor at your school. You may save
someone's life.

Learn how to manage your own
anger effectively. Find out ways to settle
arguments by talking it out, working it
out, or walking away rather than fighting.

Help others settle disputes
peaceably. Start or join a peer mediation
program, in which trained students help
classmates find ways to settle arguments

without fists or weapons.

Set up a teen court, in which
youths serve as judge, prosecutor,
jury, and defense counsel. Courts can
hear cases, make findings, and impose
sentences, or they may establish
sentences in cases where teens plead
guilty. Teens feel more involved in the
process than in an adult-run juvenile
justice system.

Become a peer counselor,
working with classmates who need
support and help with problems.

Mentor a younger student. As a
role model and friend, you can make it
easier for a younger person to adjust to
school and ask for help.

Start a school crime watch.

Consider including a student patrol that

helps keep an eye on corridors, parking
lots, and groups, and a way for students
to report concerns anonymously.

Ask each student activity or
club to adopt an anti-violence theme. The
newspaper could run how-to stories on
violence prevention; the art club could
illustrate the costs of violence. Career
clubs could investigate how violence
affects their occupational goals. Sports
teams could address ways to reduce
violence that's not part of the game plan.

Welcome new students and
help them feel at home in your school.
Introduce them to other students. Get to
know at least one student unfamiliar to
you each week.

Secrets Of A Happy Family

Experts reveal the key ingredients to a

happy family life
From the Brady Bunch and Partridge
Family to the Cleavers, Cunninghams, and
Cosbys, images of happy families have
rarely been in short supply. We all have
ideas about what they should look like.
Does yours fit the portrait of a happy
family? If not, don't despair. Below are
few of the secrets to a happy family.
You, too, can experience some of the
domestic bliss that seemed previously
reserved just for TV families.
Happy Family Secret No. 1: Enjoy
Each Other
The essence of a happy family is that
they truly uplift each other and that all
comes down to how they treat each other.
There is a joy that characterizes their
interaction, says father of eight children.
Parents come home and the kids are
happy to see them and when kids come

604.510.4088

home, the parents are happy to see them.

Happy Family Secret No. 2: Swap Stories
When your kids come home, ask them what
happened in school and have a story for them.
If you come home dejected and not really
interested and then five minutes later the TV
is on, why would they be happy to see you?
The bottom line, he says, is that when you
come home, your kids have to come first.
You must drop everything you are doing
and always come home with something
to share with your kids, whether a story
or even the smallest vignette. This way
you give your kids something to look
forward to. The great bane of family
life is boredom and that is what leads to
dysfunction, affairs, and kids wanting to
be with their friends over family.
Happy Family Secret No. 3: Put the
Marriage First
Set a real example of love. The
relationship and marriage must come

info@fijitimescanada.com

first. Think Carol and Mike Brady of

the Brady Bunch and Cliff and Clair
Huxtable of the Cosby Show.
There are many families where kids
always come first. Then they become
substitute providers of love. That's an
unfair burden to put on a kid. It's also
bad for families, because kids will move
out of the house eventually.
Happy Family Secret No. 4: Break
Bread Together
Families that eat together, stay together. It's
that simple. Family dinners are essential.
It's a time to connect. Have a minimum of
four family dinners per week.
Happy Family Secret No. 5: Play
Together
Have one or two unifying activities that
the family does together on a nightly
basis. He suggests bedtime stories for
young children or reading a chapter from
a novel to an older child.

Aries

The week starts out friendly enough as

you enjoy the company of people you
like. Unfortunately, a simple comment
has the potential to trigger an unpleasant
encounter. Whatever anger emerges is
not really about this week. You're dealing
with an old story that may finally be
ready to be resolved. A wicked sense of
humour may not be entirely appreciated
now. Behind the smiles may be feelings
that are less than positive. Breathe
deeply, step back, and you'll see what's
really going on here.

Taurus

This is good time. Doesn't that mean

you're not supposed to be hassled? Take
the offensive. Cut out those people who
never seem satisfied with you. If they
are relatives or others who are close,
then just try spending less time with
them. Make the evenings time for a new
experiences. Break the old routine and
try something completely different, such
as the opera, country line dancing, or a
hockey game. Changing habits is a good
way to change your life.

Gemini

Travel is on the agenda now. If you can't

get out of town, rent a foreign movie.
A foreign person, too, could be on the
schedule this week. Communication may
require some extra effort, but you've got
more than words to get your point across.
Gestures, sounds, and body language are
all ways to convey a message. Nothing
succeeds like excess nights.

Cancer

Physical risks are not usually your cup

of tea. This week, however, you may be
challenged to push your limits. Some
wild person may not inspire confidence,
even though you could be fascinated by
such a different view of reality. New
experiences are meant to open you to
unusual tastes, pleasures, and ideas. You
could be very surprised by how attracted
you are to this strange, new world.
A generous friend may finance these
adventures now.

Leo

This is a great week to be in full social

mode. All your Leo charm is ready for
full display. Excellent friends make for
an excellent time now. Expect some
debate early on. It's probably not worth
your effort to battle over trivia. Spend
your time planning for an extravagant
evenings. On weekend, you must push
the fun limit? A little excess is part of

604.510.4088

what life is about, dear Lion. Let yourself

roar loud and clear this week.

Virgo

This is a good fix-it week, and you're

a good fix-it person. You may need an
expert to help with the car, your bike,
or the boat, but the rest is under your
control. It's time to get at that basement,
attic, or closet that's been driving you
crazy. Tear, rip, toss and clean. Ah,
doesn't that feel better? Now go get
yourself a treat for all of your hard work.
Nights are for pleasure. Put the work
away by sundown, and go out and play.

Libra

Physical activities are appropriate for

you in this week. To avoid any problems,
make sure to carefully check all
equipment. You may meet someone who
strikes you as overly critical or unfair.
I know you hate injustice, but don't get
lost in the words. He or she has wounds
too deep to discuss openly, and this is
why such negativity is coming through.
It's not about you, so don't fall for the
bait. An extravagant outing is perfect for
nights.

Scorpio

Did you ever wonder how you happened

to be born into your family? I'm sure
there are times when you feel like your
relatives might as well have come from
another planet. Well, think of them as
a show, and a strange one. You'll avoid
fruitless conflict this week if you can
keep an attitude of detachment. Think
of yourself as a visiting scientist who is
studying an exotic foreign culture. Then
go out and spoil yourself rotten nights.

Sagittarius

Writing, talking, and short range travel

are high on the agenda in this week. Your
wit can be on display now, but could
prove too cutting for a sensitive person.
What you find funny and innocent might

be taken the wrong way. Discretion can

help you avoid conflict. Nights are good
time to combine business and pleasure.
Dinner with a colleague or potential
partner is a great way to spend the
evenings. Generosity is appreciated, but
excess can prove embarrassing.

Capricorn

In this week - you're not supposed to

think about money! Nevertheless, it's
a perfect week for coming up with a
plan to increase your resources. Have
a garage sale, sell something, or just do
a little bargain shopping of your own.
Some conversations, however, may
seem a little strange to you at this time.
You're talking "apples" and others are
talking "oranges." Naturally, this can
be frustrating. Your task is to stay calm
enough to get the answers you need.

Aquarius

Someone you thought you trusted may

hurt you with words. Whether these
words are spoken to your face or behind
your back, your reactions may be pretty
strong. There are two sides to this. One
is that you're just extra sensitive in this
week. Normally, you'd either shrug this
off or fight back with your impressive
intellectual arsenal. The other possibility
is that you really have been wronged,
that a confidence was broken, and with
it, possibly a friendship.

Pisces

It's possible that your attempts to go

out and get some things done meet with
obstacles this week. Just as you open
the door to leave, the phone rings, and
you're off in another direction. The
strategy is to keep your schedule light.
Save time for finishing up little matters
of detail. Nights you can throw caution
to the wind and party hardy. A festive
event can be just what you need now to
lift you above life's mundane matters.

Sepp Blatter Resigns As FIFA President

Amid Corruption Scandal

Sepp Blatter has resigned as president

of FIFA in a stunning capitulation to
critics as a mounting corruption scandal
engulfed world football's governing
body.
"I don't feel I have a mandate from the
entire world of football," Blatter, who
defiantly rejected calls to quit for several
months, calmly told a press conference
at FIFA's Zurich headquarters.
The 79-year-old Swiss official, FIFA
president for 17 years and only reelected last Friday, said he would remain
in charge until a special congress can
choose a new leader.
"I felt compelled to stand for re-election,
as I believed that this was the best thing
for the organisation," he said on a day
in which new revelations about doubtful
payments put pressure on the governing
body.
"That election is over but FIFA's
challenges are not. FIFA needs a
profound overhaul," Blatter said.
"While I have a mandate from the
membership of FIFA, I do not feel that
I have a mandate from the entire world
of football the fans, the players, the
clubs, the people who live, breathe and
love football as much as we all do at
FIFA.
"This is why I will call an extraordinary
congress to be held as soon as possible,
for a new president to be elected to
follow me."
Critics welcome Blatter's decision
Critics were quick to welcome Blatter's
shock announcement, though some
praised him.
"It was a difficult decision, a brave
decision, and the right decision," said
UEFA president Michel Platini, a
former ally who last week told the FIFA
president to his face that he should leave.
English Football Association chief Greg
Dyke, one of the fiercest criticis of the
FIFA leader, said the resignation was
"brilliant for world football."
"Who got him? Who shot him? What
happened between then (Friday) and
now?" he said.
"We haven't had a squeaky clean
president for many, many years. This is
the start of something new.
"He's not been honourable in years. Now
he's gone let's celebrate."
British secretary of state for culture,
media and sport John Whittingdale told
the BBC: "I hope football can now come
together."

604.510.4088

"The chasm was created by Blatter

wanting to hang on," he said.
"Europe was supporting an alternative
candidate and as long as he was there
it was going to be difficult to move
forward.
"I now hope everyone can come together
to make the changes required."
Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko,
a member of the FIFA executive and
both a key figure in the 2018 World
Cup and supporter of Blatter's, said the
resignation came as a "complete shock"
but was intended to preserve FIFA's
unity.
"Blatter's statement makes it quite clear
that he wants to keep FIFA united," he
said.
"He is looking for the continuation of
FIFA reforms."
FIFA rocked by US and Swiss
investigations
The arrest of seven FIFA officials in a
Zurich hotel last week, as part of a US
corruption inquiry, and a Swiss police
investigation into the award of the 2018
and 2022 World Cup to Russia and Qatar
proved the final straw.
The seven are among 14 football
officials and sports marketing executives
accused by US prosecutors over more
than $US150 million in bribes.
Blatter had repeatedly pleaded his
innocence and that of FIFA over the
corruption.
"The executive committee includes
representatives of confederations over
whom we have no control, but for whose
actions FIFA is held responsible. We
need deep-rooted structural change," he
reaffirmed in his statement.
He added that as he would not stand in
the election, "I shall be able to focus
on driving far-reaching, fundamental
reforms that transcend our previous
efforts."
The special congress cannot be held until
between December 2015 and March
2016, according to Domenico Scala,
chairman of FIFA's independent audit
and compliance committee.
Prince Ali bin al Hussein, who challenged
Blatter in last Friday's vote, immediately
announced that he will be a candidate to
take over.
The Jordanian prince withdrew from the
race after the first round of voting at the
Zurich congress.
Blatter beat him by 133 votes to 73 in the
first round, with rock-solid support from

info@fijitimescanada.com

Asia and Africa seeing him through.

Blatter has been with FIFA for 40
years, starting as a marketing official,
becoming secretary general in 1981 and
president in 1998, taking over from Joao
Havelange, whose long reign was also
overshadowed by scandal.
The Swiss official took over an
international federation facing financial
difficulties and turned it into a multibillion dollar operation.
In the four years between the 2010 and
2014 World Cups, FIFA made $US5.7
billion. The organisation has a cash
mountain of $US1.5 billion.
But since the first day, scandal has never
been far from his office. There were
allegations over the vote that elected
him in 1998 and the collapse of the ISL
sports marketing giant also triggered a
crisis at FIFA.
The past four years have been his
toughest however. The day after the
December 2010 vote that awarded the
2018 and 2022 World Cups triggered
widespread accusations of bribery.
Qatar has strongly denied any
wrongdoing but one senior Qatari
official, a FIFA vice president, was
banned for life amid accusations that he
gave bribes.
Swiss police investigating the award of
the 2018 and 2022 tournaments raided
the FIFA headquarters last week when
the arrests were being carried out at a
luxury city hotel.
"It is my deep care for FIFA and its
interests, which I hold very dear, that
has led me to take this decision," Blatter
said.
"What matters to me more than anything
is that when all of this is over, football is
the winner."
Blatter, stolid throughout the 10-minute
appearance, then shook the hand of a
member of his staff and calmly walked
back to his office.

When Bollywood Stars Talked About Their

Ex-Lovers
With Salman Khan often mentioning ex-flame Katrina Kaif at every opportunity he gets, we take a look at other former
lovers of Bollywood who still talk about each other...

Maintaining relationships is a demanding

task. Even more challenging is getting
out of a split. They say that the wise
thing to do is forget the past and move
on, but it is only easier said than done.
While there are many who leave no
opportunity to take a dig at their exflames, there are some who have moved
on with their lives and maintain a cordial
relation with them.
Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif
Take for example, Salman Khan who
is known to speak his mind and several
instances in the past are proof. The actor
doesn't shy away from speaking about
ex-girlfriend Katrina Kaif either. Last
year, the actor took a dig at Katrina when
she hesitated to share the stage with him
during his sister Arpita Khan's sangeet
ceremony. Reportedly, Salman has
said: Ok fine, not Katrina Kaif. Katrina
Kapoor, please come on stage. Main kya
karoon.
I gave you a chance to become Katrina
Khan, but you chose to be Katrina
Kapoor. This wasn't the only time when
he openly spoke about Kat. Recently,
while the actor was in Kashmir to shoot
for 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan', he tweeted about
how beautiful Kashmir is and that Katrina
too belongs to the state. Last weekend as
well, at an award ceremony in Dubai he
sent the crowd roaring in delight when
he said that he believes that he makes the
best on-screen pair with Katrina Kaif.
Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh

Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma

who apparently began seeing each other
during 'Band Baaja Baaraat' have never
admitted to being in a relationship,
but till today even after working with

604.510.4088

other stars and dating other people can

constantly be seen referring to each other.
In an interview last month, the actor said
that it was great uniting with her in 'Dil
Dhadakne Do' and that she will always
be special for him. Anushka on the other
hand said that Ranveer is now a calmer
and a less anxious person as compared
to his 'Band Baaja Baaraat' days. Also,
during the controversial roast session
with Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor,
the duo took all digs at their relationship
in its stride.
Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone

Post her break-up with Ranbir Kapoor,

info@fijitimescanada.com

Deepika Padukone may have been linked

to other actors and sport personalities
but the actress is vocal about her
equation with the actor till date. In one
of the interviews recently, Deepika
admitted that she can't hurt Ranbir and
is aware that he didn't turn up for Piku's
success bash with girlfriend Katrina Kaif
because 'Bombay Velvet' didn't do well
at the box office. Deepika also courted
controversy two years ago when she
commented about Ranbir-Kat's leaked
holiday pictures saying, "It has never
happened with me. I believe if you are a
celebrity or public figure... these things
are bound to happen. And I don't think
you can accuse anybody of anything. If
I am a public figure and if someone has
captured me then I feel I should have
been a little careful."
Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor
Shahid Kapoor is about to tie the knot
with Delhi girl Mira Rajput and Kareena
Kapoor Khan is happily married to Saif
Ali Khan for a few years now. However,
looks like the duo's decision to work
together in the upcoming film, 'Udta
Punjab', has set the rumour mills abuzz

604.909.4088

27

about its current status. Recently at an

event, when Kareena was asked about
working with Shahid Kapoor she said "I
know everyone is saying we are back,
but the movie is like 'American Hustle'.
Everyone has different tracks in the film
and we aren't going to be sharing screen
space. But yes, good to be working with
Shahid, he has really evolved as an actor."
John Abraham and Bipasha Basu
This couple parted ways after dating
each other for nine long years and
marks an exception to this list. The duo

who had a bitter separation apparently

due to John's closeness to his then
girlfriend Priya Runchal is not on
cordial terms.
In several interviews Bipasha has hinted
that it was foolish of her to stand behind

the man she loved. Two years ago when

asked about John Abraham, Bips quickly
responded by saying, "John who? I don't
know this person." Bips even refused to
acknowledge a common friend who was
introduced to her by John.

Jackie Shroff To Replace Anupam Kher In

'Jazbaa'

Anupam Kher who was all set to reunite

with director Sanjay Gupta after a gap of
two decades in 'Jazbaa' is now no longer
a part of the movie. While Anupam had
earlier expressed his happiness at being
a part of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's
comeback vehicle and was also part of
a script reading session with the rest of
the star cast, it now emerges that he was
never signed on for the project in the first
place.
Confirming the news, co-producer Nitin
Keni says, "We didn't come to a point
where we signed Anupam. We were
talking to him, but nothing materialised.
There were issues with his dates as well."
Ruing the missed opportunity of working
with Anupam, director Sanjay Gupta
says, "There were a lot of shuffling of
dates from our end. Mr Kher has a busy
schedule as far as films are concerned
and also keeps travelling for his plays.
He couldn't adjust the dates. So we had
to lose the opportunity of working with
him."
Jackie Shroff who has now stepped

604.510.4088

in Anupam Kher's shoes will be seen

playing father to Siddhant Kapoor in

the movie. Anupam Kher couldn't be

reached for a comment.

San Andreas (PG)***

Uprooted!
Need a hero? Look no further than
Dwayne Johnson. Known by his
presence, smirk,and smile the buff
warrior plays true to form in San
Andreas. No ordinary disaster film this
mega blockbuster from Warner Brothers
is firing folks up at Cineplex Odeon
Theatres around B.C.
Southern California is in a
mess. Correction - all California is on
edge. Quite literally for years scientists
have warned people in America's
most populace state of the dangers of
an earthquake. Residents of British
Columbia also are aware of potential
unrest in the earth's core. Now the
chickens have come home to roost.
Right from the exciting opening
moments viewers are on edge as danger
seems to be around every bend. Out to
help those in need are the Los Angeles
Fire Department. Search and Rescue
teams are common across North America.
Ace helicopter pilot Ray is a man of few
words but all business when it comes
to engineering rescues of all sorts. Too
bad his personal life is less successful as
alas he is the odd man out when it comes
to his wife Emma. wholesome Carla
Gugino (Night at the Museum) connects
as an otherwise proper wife trying to
cope with a new life.
Amidst all the personal angst
in Ray's seemingly normal life he faces
new challenges as a series of massive
shock waves turn life on the coast and
Silicon Valley into a nightmare. Nothing
will prepare you for the onslaught of
catastrophe as havoc strikes.
Family means everything to Ray or at least what he has left of it. Wayward
daughter Blake embodies all the qualities

604.510.4088

you'd want in a daughter with Alexandria

Daddario quite impressionable as a
spirited lass. Less hopeful is the role of
the other man, her mom's new beau, well
played by Ioan Gruffold.
Scientists are not spared in this
112 minute movie with Paul Giamatti

(Big Momma's House) quite convincing

as a researcher on a mission. First class
special effects, true tension and 3-D
that will reel you in make San Andreas
a must see for fans of The Rock and a
good precursor of what you should do if
the big one strikes.

Vancouver Canucks: The Great Trade

Robbery

The 1991 NHL Draft on the surface

appeared to be an uneventful one for the
Vancouver Canucks. Their highest draft
pick that year was Canadian winger
Alek Stojanov. Taken as the 7th overall
pick, Stojanov had shown great promise
while playing for the Hamilton Dukes in
the OHL. A tough, physically imposing
forward, he seemed a good fit for Pat
Quinns side. But there was one selection
nine places below that would make a key
difference in the Canucks future. With
the 16th overall pick, the Pittsburgh
Penguins selected Swedish winger
Markus Naslund. What would transpire
from this affair would be become one of
the most lopsided trades in NHL history.
Despite
his
previous
offensive
showcasing, Stojanov looked out of
his element very quickly in the NHL.

A shoulder injury kept him out of the

entire 1993-94 season. In 1994-95, he
made only four appearances in the NHL.
Despite some impressive showings for
AHL affiliate, Syracuse Crunch, his
goal scoring talents seemed to dry up.
By 1996, Stojanov had been pushed
into more of an enforcer role. His points
total though was troubling the Canucks
management because in 62 regular
season games, he had registered only a
single assist.
Over in Pennsylvania, Naslund had been
faring little better. His first two seasons
had brought about only 15 points. His
natural goalscoring seemed to have
vanished and the once promising talent
was beginning to look like a bust. The
1995-96 season appeared to bring about a
change as Naslund notched up 52 points.

But his production towards the end of the

year slowed, which appeared to be the
final nail in the coffin. Despite having
high hopes for him to match Jaromir
Jagr, trade rumors were persistent in his
final year.
March 20, 1996 is a day that will always
be well remembered in Canucks history.
On this day, Naslund was traded to the
Canucks in exchange for Stojanov. Upon
arriving in British Columbia, he was
finally able to make use of the talent he
displayed with Modo in Sweden. By the
time he departed Vancouver in 2008, he
held a franchise high points total of 756
(since surpassed by Henrik and Daniel
Sedin). Naslund became the Canucks first
ever European captain in 2000, which
he held until his departure. Alongside
Brendan Morrison and Todd Bertuzzi,
the three formed the productive West
Coast Express Line which tormented
NHL defences between 2001-2005.
Alek Stojanov however, was a disaster
for the Penguins, scoring only 6 points in
his two seasons. His 222 penalty minutes,
would be his only career high. He would
spend the remainder of his career playing
in the minor leagues before calling time
on his career at just 29 years old. 24 years
on this trade has proven to be one that
was a big mismatch. Naslunds number
19 now hangs proudly from the rafters
of the Rogers Arena. While Stojanovs
name regularly appears in the all time
draft bust lists! From out of nothing,
Vancouver turned a potential problem
into a great long term solution.

Verevou Scores Historic WC Goal

VODAFONE Fiji under-20 striker
Iosefo Verevou will always cherish his
historic goal against Germany at the U20
soccer World Cup opening pool game at
Christchurch yesterday.
Verevou said he would always cherish
the moment since this was the first goal
scored by any Fijian player during Fiji's
first soccer World Cup.
He said scoring at the World cCp against
a top team such as Germany was a dream
come true.
And the Rewa striker has dedicated his
achievement to two special people.
Verevou said he dedicated the goal to his
mum Anaseini Wati and to the mother
of his best friend and teammate Setareki

604.510.4088

Hughes who passed away last month.

"Firstly I want to dedicate that goal to
my mum who always inspired me to
perform to my best," said Verevou.
"I also dedicated the goal to Seta's mum
who passed away last month and I hope
that she would be a proud mother to see
me and Seta playing together for Fiji at
the World Cup.
"Scoring a goal against Germany at a
World Cup is a dream come true for me
and I will always cherish the moment."
Verevou who was initially axed from the
World Cup team for indiscipline before
being recalled also thanked the Fiji FA
for having faith in him.
"I would like to thank Fiji FA for giving

info@fijitimescanada.com

me another chance after being dropped

from the team early in our campaign,"
he said.
"The goal was a gift to Fiji FA for their
trust in having me back in the side.
"Fiji FA has taught me a good lesson and
I want to give something special to them
in this world cup."
He also thanked the supporters who
came out in huge numbers to support the
team at Christchurch.
Verevou said the side would improve
their performance in their second game
on Thursday.
Results of the other games played
yesterday; Nigeria 2- 4 Brazil, Korea DPR
1- 5 Hungary, Uzbekistan 3- 4 Honduras
