PART 1 - GENERAL

SUMMARY
A.

This Section provides requirements for furnishing and installing gas piping inside and outside of building,
including the supply line from the gas meter, service lines to gas equipment and appliances, termination
of the service line with a valve, and final connection to equipment and appliances. Also included shall be
the gas vent piping. Contractor is responsible to furnish the gas meter and installation of natural gas
piping system extending to the building from gas main located on the campus. Refer to civil drawings for
general routing to the building. All work shall be incompliant with NFPA 54 and the International Fuel
Gas Code.

SUBMITTALS
A.

Product Data: For each type of product indicated.

Shop Drawings: For facility natural gas piping layout. Include plans, piping layout and elevations,
sections, and details for fabrication of pipe anchors, hangers, supports for multiple pipes, alignment
guides, expansion joints and loops, and attachments of the same to building structure. Detail location of
anchors, alignment guides, and expansion joints and loops.

Delegated-Design Submittal: For gas piping and equipment indicated to comply with performance
requirements and design criteria, including analysis data signed and sealed by the qualified professional
engineer responsible for their preparation.

QUALITY ASSURANCE
A.

Brazing: Qualify processes and operators according to ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code:
Section IX.

B.

Steel Support Welding Qualifications: Qualify procedures and personnel according to AWS D1.1/D1.1M,
"Structural Welding Code - Steel."

C.

Pipe Welding Qualifications: Qualify procedures and operators according to ASME Boiler and Pressure
Vessel Code.

D.

Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA 70, by a
qualified testing agency, and marked for intended location and application.

B.

Piping (Above Ground):


1.

Pipe and Fittings for 2 inch and smaller in all locations, upstream of manual shut-off valve at
emergency shut-off valves - Provide schedule 40, ASTM A 53, black steel with socket weld
carbon steel fittings conforming to ANSI B16.11. Pipe larger than 2 inches in all locations:
Provide Schedule 40, ASTM A53, black steel pipe with long radius butt weld fittings. All pipe
joints located in crawl space, inside walls, above ceiling shall be welded fittings.

C.

Unions: Use 150-pound standard (300-pound water, oil or gas) malleable iron, ground joint unions, with
bronze seat. Provide flange joints for pipe 3 inches and larger in diameter.

D.

Flanges: Furnish Class 125 ANSI cast iron flanges.

E.

Where flexible connectors are indicated on the plumbing drawings, the flexible connectors shall be
corrugated stainless steel, ASTM A240. with U/V resistant polyethylene jacket, ASTM E84 compliant
index for flame and smoke, manufactured by Gastite.

2.3

VALVES
A.

Ball Valves: For valves downstream of automatic emergency shut-off valve, provide two piece, 600 psi
WOG, cast brass body, replaceable reinforced Teflon seats, full port, blowout-proof stem, chrome-plated
brass ball, threaded ends, carbon steel handle, quarter turn, MSS-SP-110 compliant, UL listed and CSA
approved for natural gas service stamped directly on valve body (125G), manufactured by Nibco Model
T-585-70-UL, or approved

B.

Plug Valves: Lubricated type, suitable for bi-directional dead end service, bubble tight shut-off, Port area
at least 80% of the pipe area, self-cleaning plug sealing surfaces, cast iron ASTM A126 Class E body,
threaded connection for sizes through 2 inch downstream of emergency shut-off valves, and flanged for
all sizes upstream of emergency shut-off valves. Bolted bonnet, permanently lubricated with baked TFE
or thermosetting epoxy boded to plug, ball checks, cast iron shaft with wrench operator for sizes smaller
than 4 inch, position indicator, memory stop, specifically designed for natural gas service, CGA
approved, GSA approval stamped on valve as fuel gas rated, manufactured by Nordstrom Figure 142, 143
or Walworth Figure 2720 and 2721. Contractor has option to provide this valve with threaded ends
downstream of automatic emergency shut-off valves.

C.

Emergency Shut-off Valves. 2-Way, electrically tripped, solenoid type, fail safe closed, manual reset,
type 1 solenoid enclosure, 120 volt single phase, continuous duty molded Class F coil, aluminum body,
303 stainless steel stem and springs, threaded ends, rated & listed for natural gas service, suitable for
mounting in vertical position, manufactured by Red Hat Model No. 8044A2

2.4

GAS PRESSURE REGULATOR


A.

GR-1(Domestic water heaters): Gas pressure regulator, 5 psi inlet pressure and 9 inch w.c. outlet pressure
setting (spring range 6 inches w.c to 14 inches w.c.), minimum rated for 200 cfh at pressure setting,
manufactured by Equimeter or approved equal.

B.

GR-2(mechanical boilers): Gas pressure regulator, 5 psi inlet pressure and 11 inch w.c. outlet pressure
setting (spring range 6 inches w.c to 14 inches w.c.), minimum rated for 1500 cfh at pressure setting,
manufactured by Equimeter or approved equal.

C.

GR-3(Kitchen): Gas pressure regulator, 5 psi inlet pressure and 10 inch w.c. outlet pressure setting
(spring range 6 inches w.c to 28 inches w.c.), minimum rated for 1000 cfh at pressure setting,
manufactured by Equimeter or approved equal.

GR-4(Supply Fan): Gas pressure regulator, 5 psi inlet pressure and 10 inch w.c. outlet pressure setting
(spring range 6 inches w.c to 14 inches w.c.), minimum rated for 150 cfh at pressure setting,
manufactured by Equimeter or approved equal.

GR-5(Labs): Gas pressure regulator, 5 psi inlet pressure and 11 inch w.c. outlet pressure setting (spring
range 6 inches w.c to 14 inches w.c.), minimum rated for 120 cfh at pressure setting, manufactured by
Equimeter or approved equal.

GAS METERS
A.

Main meter for the entire Building: Provided and installed by the Natural Gas Utility Company. Patriots
Casa Building 2 inch Single path ultrasonic gas meter (3,00 CFH total demand) with pulse output user
scaleable 1 or 10 cubic feet, 125 lb flange, a swich output to transmit totalized volume to a remote
counter (building automation system), manufactured by Sensus Sonic 2000.

B.

Central Academic Building - 4 inch rotary gas meter (11,000 CFH total demand) with pulse output, 150
lb flange, a swich output to transmit totalized volume to a remote counter (building automation system),
manufactured by Romet RM1100 STD ID/DCID.

C.

Meter for Domestic Water Heater: 2 inch rotary piston gas meter (800 CFH demand) with pulse output
every 10 cubic feet, 125 lb. flange, with digital read mechanical index, manufactured by Instromet No.
IMRM-2M

2.6

LABORATORY SAFETY DEVICE SYSTEM


A.

Main meter for the entire Building: Provided and installed by the Natural Gas Utility
Company.Contractor shall provide all equipment, devices, and other provisions for the Laboratory Safety
Device System as outlined in the Drawings and Specifications. Each Utility Controller where shown on
the Drawings and herein specified shall operate as an independent Control System. The Contractor shall
be responsible for all system components and for coordinating all component wiring with Division 22 &
Division 26 for a complete operational system.

B.

Electrical. It shall be the responsibility of the Contractor to provide all conduit systems, standard
electrical boxes, operating power and all low voltage control wiring, making final wiring connections to
all Laboratory Safety Device System Equipment as indicated by Drawings and Specifications. Each
Utility Controller where shown on the Plumbing Drawings and herein specified shall operate as an
independent Control System. Contractor shall coordinate with Plumbing Contractor and install all devices
not requiring connections to utility piping systems. Contractor shall be responsible for all system
configurations, integration, test and start-up, coordinated with Division 22.

C.

Products. All Products and Devices for a complete Laboratory Safety Device System shall be provided as
shown on Drawings and as listed below.

D.

Utility Controller. Located in the electrical room adjacent to contactor enclosure or where indicated on
drawings. Provide a Utility Controller BLC Series Number and size as indicated on the Plumbing
drawings with Stainless Steel Door Panel mounted switches to activate remote solenoid and relays to
control the natural gas, and electrical outlets at student desks. Utility Controller shall comply with
Underwriters Laboratory UL916 Standards. Unit shall control utility outlets at student workstations or
other locations as indicated by Drawings. The Controller shall be equipped with an enabling key switch
that restricts activation of output circuits to the instructor. Deactivation of output circuits shall not require
engagement on enabling key. Controller shall be provided with a door panel mounted panic button

assembly. Utility Controller shall be furnished under this section and provided to the Electrical Contractor
for installation. 120 volt single phase power connection. Refer to electrical drawings for location.
E.

Remote Panic Assembly. Located at each Teachers Desk or where shown on Plumbing Drawings.
Provide a wall mounted Remote Panic Assembly with clear plastic hinged cover BLC Series Model
#EPO and Integrate Assembly with Utility Controller. All conduit shall be concealed in wall. Refer to
architectural drawings for exact locations. Remote panic assembly shall be furnished under this section
and provided to the Electrical Contractor for installation. Each wiring system shall be housed in
independent conduit and not bundled with wiring from other systems or control units.

F.

Solenoid Valve Enclosure. Located in Laboratory Prep Room as shown on Plumbing Drawings. Provide
an BLC Pre-Assemblied Solenoid Valve Enclosure Box with sizes indicated on Plumbing Drawings with
white Power Coated or Stainless Steel Door and keyed lock. Provided with Integral in-line filters for Gas
services. Enclosure shall be integrated with Utility Controller as shown on Drawings. Number of solenoid
valve assemblies, intended use and pipe sizes are indicated on Drawings.

G.

Electrical Contact Enclosure. Located in electrical room as shown on Electrical Drawings. Provide a
BLC-E Pre-Assemblied Contact Enclosure Box with Sizes indicated on Fixture Detail & on Drawings
with Gray Powder or white Powder Coated Door and Screw-Driver door lock. Unit shall be provided with
lighting contacts for each circuit providing service to student work-stations and secondary contacts for
other circuits and as shown on Drawings. The enclosure shall be integrated with Utility controller as
shown on Drawings. Number of contacts as shown on Drawings. Enclosure shall be furnished under this
section and provided to the Electrical Contractor for installation. 120 volt single phase power connection
by Division 22. Refer to electrical drawings for number of contacts required.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1

PREPARATION
A.

The serving utility will provide connection to an existing gas main and service to the meter. Give proper
notice and pay all fees and other costs for complete gas service.

INSTALLATION
A.

Installation Standards: The installation of the entire natural gas system shall be in accordance with NFPA
54.

B.

Drip Legs: Install a capped drip leg 6 inches long at the base of each vertical riser and at each equipment
connection.

C.

Coating and Wrapping: Coat and wrap underground piping in accordance with the standards of the
servicing utility.

D.

Where natural gas piping is installed vertically, not grouped with other piping, secure to wall with hanger
similar to B-Line Figure BL1400. Hanger shall be primed and painted to match wall. Hanger shall be on
4-0 o.c. spacing.

Encase gas piping running in or through solid partitions, above ceilings in space used as a return
air plenum or which is unventilated and in all other areas or spaces within the building in which
gas might collect or from which gas might be introduced into supply or return air systems.
For encasement or sleeving, use Schedule 10, black steel pipe and fittings conforming to ASTM A
120, with welded joints.
Sleeve piping and fittings must be two pipe sizes, but not less than 1 inch larger than encased gas
piping.
Vent sleeve to outside, or to nearest ventilated space discharging to outside.

Encase gas piping running below slab in a service-weight cast iron conduit, minimum size two pipe sizes
larger than gas pipe. Vent conduit to ventilated space inside building and with a 3/4 inch vent with 3/4
inch return bend 4 inches above finish grade outside of building.

Make threaded joints with square, clean, full cut, standard taper pipe threads.
Ream after cutting and threading. Use heavy duty teflon sealing compound or teflon tape as
threading seal.
Sealing compound shall be non-toxic, non-drying, anti-seize, UL classified, and AGA approved.

CLEANING AND PURGING


A.

Follow guidelines set forth in NFPA 54, and as specified.

B.

Pipe, tubing, fittings, valves and equipment shall be visibly clean of foreign material before being
installed into the system. Pipe shall be cleaned by hammering, shaking or swabbing, or combination of
methods.

C.

The system shall be purged with dry oil-free compressed air after erection. Oil free air is defined as
containing less than 5 ppm oil with a 36F or lower dewpoint. Use 80 to 90 psi pressure to purge system,
unless otherwise indicated.

D.

Purge system at 12000 fpm velocity before installing any valves or control device. During the progress of
construction, the open ends of pipe, fittings, and valves shall be properly protected to prevent the
admission of foreign matter.

E.

Immediately after installation, valve outlets shall be closed with a threaded plug or cap and left closed
until gas equipment is connected.

3.5

PRESSURE TESTING SYSTEM


A.

General: As a minimum pressure test system per NFPA 54. Test pressure shall be measured with a
manometer or pressure measuring device designed and calibrated to read a pressure loss due to leakage
during the pressure test period. Testing shall be conducted by Licensed plumber and/or as additionally
defined.

B.

For systems on which the normal operating pressure is 0.5 psig, the test pressure shall be 5.0 psig and the
time interval shall be 30 minutes.

C.

For systems on which the normal operating pressure is 0.5 psig to 4.9 psig, the test pressure shall be 1.5
times the normal operating pressure or 5.0 psig, whichever is greater, and the time interval shall be 30
minutes.

D.

A pressure test using normal operating pressure shall be utilized only on systems operating at 5.0 psig or
greater, and the time interval shall be one hour.

E.

Any interior piping failing the pressure test shall be repaired and retested or the piping shall be
disconnected from the gas supply.
