HOME CINEMA EXPLAINED

Multi-channel
Although stereo systems (two speakers
giving the possibility of left to right
staging) have been around for some
years, multi-channel systems are a
more recent development. Originally
just for full size cinemas, multichannel systems set out to create a
wrap-around sound stage allowing
sounds to move both left to right and
front to back. Home cinema receivers
and processors decode signals from
various sources and then feed six or
even eight speakers with the
appropriate sounds to create these
effects.
Speaker positioning
Unlike stereo, multi-channel surround
sound is mixed for a known listening
environmentthe cinema! This means
for the best results in the home all we

need to do is replicate the correct

speaker positions according to the
rules set down by the recording
industry. Arcams award-winning
training program gives its dealers these
skills and they are best placed to advise
on speaker positioning for your room.
Universal playback
In recent years a multitude of disc
formats have arrived and are now
available on DVD players. These
formats have a variety of advantages
and cover both music and movie
playback. The term Universal has
been loosely adopted in recent times to
indicate that a player is compatible
with all common formats. These are
generally understood to be: DVDVideo, CD, DVD-Audio, SACD, VCD
and S-VCD. Although at Arcam we
believe that performance for DVD

video and CD discs is of prime

importance, our models have a variety
of disc playback possibilities and now
includes Universal playback on the
DV137
Low Frequency Effects
Thrilling movie playback demands
much of an audio system. One of the
most difficult things to achieve is deep
and controlled bass. The explosions,
bangs and crashes that litter todays
typical action movies are a good
example. With this in mind, digital
surround sound often carries a
dedicated track for these called a Point
1 or Low Frequency Effects (LFE)
channel. In systems with a dedicated
sub woofer, the bass portion of these
effects is only replayed by the subwoofer itself, which is designed to
handle these types of signal.

Video scaling
Although video pictures are made up
of a fixed number of horizontal lines
(for example 576 for PAL in Europe,
480 for NTSC in North America),
most digital displays (Plasma, LCD,
DLP, etc.) use a larger number of lines
to fill the screen. Because of this
incompatibility, Video scaling devices
that mathematically work out how the
picture should look on this larger
number of pixels are required. Fitted
inside the screen, the quality of such
devices varies widely. The DV137
incorporates ultra-high performance
video scaling devices fitted to take over
from those fitted in the screen
resulting in a vastly better picture.

The P1000 7-channel power amplifier is rated at over 135
watts per channel. It uses an innovative class H amplifier
topology that offers high current capability with cool

DiVA HIGH FIDELITY

Arcam has a worldwide reputation for audio reproduction of the
highest standard, giving your favourite music an emotional
power that you may never have experienced before.
Arcams staff are passionate about music, and this,
combined with their engineering prowess,
is reflected in the products they produce.
Anybody can enjoy the experience of losing themselves in music.
Whats more, you dont have to be an expert to hear the
difference that Arcam can make any demonstration of the
products described in the following pages will show why DiVA
can reproduce music to true audiophile standards.

HIGH FIDELITY TERMINOLOGY EXPLAINED

Power (Watts Per Channel
WPC)
Loudspeakers require high levels of
electrical power to generate sound.
Although in general the more power
an amplifier has, the better, all
amplifiers are not created equally.
While an amplifier with a larger
power supply will tend to control a
loudspeaker more efficiently, it must
also have other attributes such as low
distortion and low noise floor to
sound good.
Cables
Because systems can vary widely in
terms of quality and installation, there
are few standards for interconnection
cables. Cables can affect the sound
quality quite considerably and should
be considered as much part of the
system as other components. When

buying, seek your dealers advice and

listen to them as much as any other
component. Cable length should be
kept to a minimum, and try to avoid
coiling any long interconnect.
Speakers
Your dealer can recommend and
demonstrate the loudspeakers that
would most perfectly complement
Arcam products. Speakers from most
prestigious manufacturers work well,
but speaker positioning needs to be
considered carefully. A small
adjustment to position can make a
huge difference in the resulting
sound. Again, consult your dealer for
positioning advice.
Bi-amping
Bi-amping simply means driving the
tweeter (high frequency) and woofer

(low frequency) drivers in your

speakers separately. This is achieved
by adding a stereo power amplifier to
your system connected to the original
amplifiers pre-amp output. By
running a second set of speaker cables
to your speakers and removing your
speakers bi-wire links, a huge sound
quality improvement will be heard.
DAB (Aerials)
Your digital radio hi-fi tuner will
come with an indoor aerial, which
should work well if youre well within
a DAB coverage area. However, if
youre listening in a basement, or
your building is steel-framed, or
reinforced concrete, you might need
an external aerial. To obtain the best
results from an external aerial, either
use a dipole or, in exceptional
circumstances, a Yaggi.

All DAB aerials must be vertically

polarised. The higher the aerial is
mounted, the better reception you will
receive. Visit
www.digitalradionow.com for further
information and to check DAB
coverage for your area.
