BIM: What we see

Communication between the engineering office and his partners increasingly
important: Architect, Contractor, Fabricator on the basis of a 3D model
Problems when parties dont use the same software as the engineer
Contracts depend on the Engineer being able to communicate with multiple 3D
Modelling solutions or risk losing contracts
Most clients dont want to change their software, they have what they regard as
the best solution for their business
The solution: Open BIM

BIM: Exchange structural model or analysis model

Two possible approaches for the model exchange between CAD & CAE software
1. Exchanging the analysis model
2. Exchanging the structural model (=Reference model)
1. Analysis model historical first approach
Only possible if the CAD s/w supports an analysis model: Tekla, Revit
The CAE s/w must use proprietary links and maintain them
The user of the CAD s/w creates the analysis model
The analysis model is sent back and forth
2. Structural model current approach, Open BIM
Based on IFC format ISO standard
For all CAD s/w supporting IFC: Allplan, ArchiCAD, Vectorworks, Revit, Tekla,
Bocad, DDS CAD, etc.
Developers focus on supporting 1 quality format, IFC
The draftsman focuses on his model, the engineer focuses on the CAE model
The reference model is sent back and forth

Open BIM The Vision

Clients can Choose the Best of Breed Solutions

No need for new software for each new project
One design program can be used to collaborate with
other project offices no matter the complexity of the
structure
Independent upgrade cycles
Intelligent Workflow = Less Errors

Supporting the engineer in BIM

Scia Engineer is the only Structural

Analysis and Design Software to fully
support the Open BIM process.

The following BIM tools are available:

1) Certified IFC 2x3 Import & Export

2) True analysis: Structural model and analysis
model in the same project
3) Member recognizer to convert reference
objects into equivalent analysis objects
4) Alignment to create a clean and connected
analysis model
5) Model Update to support revisions and
coordination

Pathology scheme won in 2011

Given option to use BIM
Jumped at chance
Full design team (architect/structural
engineer, M&E engineer, contractor)
willing to try BIM
Contractor was kind & stated you can go
back to 2D phew!

Lead-in

BIM Development

Inaccurate

Generic modelling

Masked issues

Low level of development

Visual only

Unintelligent limited data but sufficient to meet protocols

We became aware very quickly that

the 3D team was ahead of the 2D

team
The images and results from the 3D
model were noticeably quicker and
more accurate
The 3D images were conveying the
design better
We took the decision to stop the 2D

team and apply all resources to 3D

this then delivered the planning
drawings via the model

Did the contractor want IFC? Not really, they wanted native file format but it
soon became obvious there were three authoring platforms in the team.
