remindthem,thecharactersinthefilmhavenotbeenleftentirelydestitute.

thatsheisarefinedlady,whileRhettinsistsondisabusingherofthenotion
ateveryopportunity.ForthefirsthalfofthefilmRhettseemstoenjoythis
duty,butbytheendofthefilmheisclearlydisgustedbyScarlett.He
discoversthattheunladylikewomanheputhishopesinrejectsthequalities
requiredofagoodwife:compassion,understanding,andcaring.Nomatter
whatRhettdoesforher,Scarlettseemstocarelittleforhim.

thecharactersdiscussatthebarbequeattheTwelveOaksplantation,the
chiefadvantagestheSouthhadduringthewarwereindependenceandpride.
Itdidntmatterthatithadfewerresourcesorlessmilitarystrongholdsthan
theNorth.TheSouthhadafarmorecivilizedsociety,andaslongasthey
werefightingforitsmoregraceful,dignifiedwayoflifeitwasimpossible
fortheSouthtolose.Infact,manyweresoconvincedoftheSouths
securitytheythoughtthewarwouldendinafewweeks,barelyenoughtime
fortheseasontochangeontheplantationsorforthebeautifulSouthern
bellestobecomelonely.

RHETT:Frankly,mydear,Idontgiveadamn.

TheseareRhettslastwordsinthemovieandperhapsthemostmemorable
lineofGoneWiththeWind.Thislineshowsasmuchstrengthofcharacterin
RhettasScarlettsearlierdefiancedoesinher,andwiththesewordsRhett
himselfbecomesalmostmoreheroicthanScarlett.Scarlett,despiteallthe
hardshipsshefaces,neverfullyacceptsthatotherpeoplearejustasgood

andasworthyofrespectandadmirationassheis.Stormyandwild,sheis
completelyconvincedofherownbeautyandseemstobecompletely
irresistibletoeverymanshemeets.Sheshucksoffhergenteelupbringing
withonlyminorhesitation,hardlyeverfeelsguiltyaboutwhatshedoesto
others,andgenerallylivesherlifeonalegendaryscale.Thoughshedoes
exhibitadmirabledeterminationandbravery,sheremainsaloofanddistant,
andthesequalitiespreventherfrombeingawhollyaccessiblecharacter.
Despiteallhisbravado,Rhettultimatelyshowsmoretruehumanitythan
Scarlettdoes.Thoughhefirstappearsinthefilmwithareputationand
demeanorasdaringandiconicasScarletts,hisaffectionforScarlettquickly
revealsthathisheartishisAchillesheel.HeisaspowerlessbeforeScarlett
asarealltheothermen,butunlikeCharlesHamiltonandFrankKennedy,
Rhetthateshispowerlessnessandstruggleshardagainstit.Hisstruggleis
longanddifficult.EvenasheswearshellfreehimselffromScarlett,his
lonelinesscontinuestodrawhimtoher,andhesustainsthehopethatshell
onedayloveandappreciatehimashedoesher.Rhettdoubts,andeven
occasionallyhates,himselfforthecycleofaffectionandrejectionhes
trappedin.Certainmomentsinthefilm,suchasScarlettssceneonthe
staircaseandBonniesdeath,revealtheextentofRhettssadnessandpain.
ThefilmneverexploresScarlettsdarkfeelingsasdeeply.WhenRhett
finallybreaksawayfromhispoisonousrelationshipwithScarlett,his
decisioniscourageousyetheartbreaking.Rhetthasshownthathecanfeel
truepainandanguish,andhisfeelingsareevidenteveninhisdismissive,
bitingwords.

shewontbeabletomakeithome.HadshelistenedtoRhettswarnings,she
wouldnthavemadethejourney.WhenshebuildsFrankKennedyssmall

sidelineintoamillofherown,shedoesntbowtowellmeaningadviceor
anyofthegossipthatspreadsoverherambition.Asaresult,herbusiness
endsupbeingfarmoreprofitablethanFrankseverhadbeen.
Therearetimes,though,whenScarlettssinglemindednessalsoworksto
herdetriment.Oftenitkeepsherfrombeingabletoeffectivelygraspallthe

WhentheUnionsoldiersappearaftertheShantytownraidsheisso
