1. Introduction
Perovskite-type metal oxides have been regarded as promising
materials for solar cells and catalysts.14 However, they suer
from a major challenge due to their low specic surface area.5
For example, highly crystalline LaCoO3 with a low specic
surface area of 11 m2 g1 was prepared by co-precipitation
method.6 LaFe0.94Pd0.06O3 with a specic surface area of
23.5 m2 g1 was prepared through the classical citrate complexation procedure.7 By solgel method, LaMO3 (M Mn and Co)
with specic surface areas of 17.5 to 23.5 m2 g1 were synthesized.8,9 Therefore, it is highly desirable to develop an eective
strategy for synthesis of high specic surface area perovskites.
Recently, three dimensionally ordered macroporous LaFeO3 with
a high specic surface area of 32 m2 g1 was prepared, which
exhibited excellent activity for the catalytic oxidation of soot.10,11
Hollow materials with low density and high specic surface
area have attracted much attention. Template-directed route
has been considered as an eective strategy to synthesize hollow
materials. Diverse hollow spheres, such as Co3O4, TiO2, WO3,
In2O3 and Eu3+-doped Y2O3 with high specic surface areas have
been synthesized by carbon sphere template method.1216
However, perovskite-type hollow spheres have rarely been
reported.

4. Conclusions
In summary, high specic surface area LaMO3 (M Co, Mn)
hollow spheres were synthesized by carbon sphere template
method. High specic surface area, pore volume, pore size, ratio
of Oads/Olatt, and small crystallite size, good low-temperature
reducibility were responsible for the excellent catalytic performance of LaMO3 (M Co, Mn) hollow sphere in methane
combustion. We believe that this method has promising
application in the synthesis of other perovskites.
