The Facts ?

Kanook – February – 2010

Some 56.2 years ago, the Deputy Acting Head of Special Operations for the holy
order of the Central Intelligence Agency (“CIA”) at the ripe old age of 43.4 years old,
is supposed to have thrown himself out his hotel room in Manhattan at the Hotel
Pennsylvania, a ten floor plunge. At the time he was investigating the use of
psychoactive drugs for the Defense of the United States of America.
He left behind at his home in Fredrick, Maryland a wife, two sons and a daughter.
His death ended his occupancy on this planet, but left his family in turmoil and a
darkness that only the governments of this world can create.
1953 was a pretty significant year in our civilizations history, Mt Everest was
conquered on May 29th, 1953 by Sir Edmund Percival Hillary and his Sherpa guide
Tenzing Norgay (Namgyal Wangdi) via the southeast ridge the easier route of the
two main routes. On February 9th, 1952 Francis Harry Compton Crick and James
Dewey Watson published in Nature magazine their famous paper mapping the
double helix structure of Deoxyribonucleic acid (“DNA”). On July 18th, 1953 Elvis
Aaron Presley walked into Sun Records in Memphis and made his first recording,
“My Happiness”, and Bill Haley and Haley's Comets recorded “Crazy Man, Crazy” at
the Coastal Studios in NYC in April of 1953, Rock and Roll was born. On January 7 th,
1953 President Harry S. Truman announced that the United States had developed a
Hydrogen Bomb – the Cold War turned in to a Cold Hot War. On October 31st, 1953
the first network NTSC “compatible color” broadcast of the opera Carmen aired,
color TV had arrived. And not let us forget the Director of the CIA, Allen Welsh
Dulles’ talk to his Princeton alumni group whereas he commented, “Mind warfare is
the great battlefield of the Cold War, and we have to do whatever it takes to win
this.” On April 13th 1953 the MK-ULTRA project was commissioned on the order of
CIA Director Allen Dulles, a project designed to study mind-control, interrogation,
behavior modification and other topics of messing with the human physic. They
have and they still do, “the end justifies the means” is still a model of government.
During the week preceding Nov 18th – Friday 20th, 1953, the Deputy Acting Head of
Special Operations, Frank Olson received a invitation to participate in an “office
retreat” a few miles beyond “Accident”, Maryland at “Deep Creek Lake”, and stay at
a cabin there that is commonly known as the “Railey’s Cabins”, about 10-miles
north of Oakland, Maryland on Highway 219.
The cottage had only four bedrooms, each with a double bed – a tight sleeping
arrangement if all persons on the invitation showed up – which included four from
the CIA and five from the SOD agency. The tentative list on the invitation had Lt Col
Vincent Ruwet (listed as a driver, but Frank Olson’s boss), Dr John. Schwab
(Scientific Director at Ft Deitrick), Dr J. Stubbs, Dr Frank Olson, Dr Sydney Gottlieb
(Dr Strangelove), Dr Robert Lashbrook, A. Hughes, H Bortner Dr B Tanner, Ben
Wilson (driver) and Mal (driver.
Frank Olson came home that weekend, Nov 19th, 1953 in a state of agitation and
sometime during the weekend he had told his wife Alice W. Olson, “I made a terrible
mistake and I’ll tell you what it was when the children have gone to bed.” He never
did get around to telling her.
On Sunday evening, his agitation reaching a fever pitch he told Alice that he
wanted to quit his job and become a dentist – in an attempt to calm him she took
him by the hand and went to the local cinema in Fredrick which was showing the
film “Martin Luther”, which being the movie that it is only increased his agitation
and on-coming depression, his wife agreed that he was depressed but was not even
close to being psychotic.. The moral of the film, if you’ve never seen it, is an
individual cannot hide behind the institution.
Eventually his mood did not shift, for at work on Monday some of his colleagues
suggested that he go to New York to visit a psychiatrist – why New York is a
question that cannot be answered satisfactorily other than it might be that this was
a Doctor who could keep a secret. Alice drove Frank to Washington D.C. and
dropped him off at the offices of the men who would accompany him to New York –
that was the last time she ever saw her husband alive. Her later description of the
office fit the old CIA Headquarters.
It is printed and accepted by the general public that Frank Olson took his life
because during some period of time at Deer Creek Lodge, 9 days previous, on Nov
19th, 1953 Sidney Gottlieb had slipped 70 micrograms of LSD into his glass of
“Cointreau” and that some 20-minutes later it was noted Frank “mild” symptoms of
disorientation. One other document says that a like amount was put into the others
glasses, whereas the meeting soon degenerated into hours of drug-induced hilarity
and that for days after, Olson was said to be sullen and withdrawn. Must have been
quite a shock to his system!
Monday morning following his troubled Sunday, Frank Olson went straight to Lt Col
Vincent Ruwet’s office and told him he wanted to resign. Ruwet told him to “calm
down” and go home. The next morning he did the same and “insisted” his
resignation be accepted – his wife in reflection said that Frank was in the grip of an
ethical dilemma. His boss, Lt Col Vincent Rewet told CIA investigators that Olson
“appeared to be greatly agitated and in his own words, ‘all mixed up’.”’
His boss (Ruwet) and Robert Lashbook (a CIA liaison at Fort Detrick) took Olson to
New York – ostensibly to seek psychiatric advice – the doctor Frank Olson saw was
Dr Harold Abramson, who was receiving CIA financing to experiment with LSD gave
Frank Olson a prescription for “Nembutal” and a fifth of bourbon to help Olson
sleep. He was also taken to see John Mulholland (a New York “magician”) who may
have attempted to hypnotize him. Ruwet told investigators that in Mulholland’s
presence Olson became highly agitated. “What’s behind this?” he kept asking his
friend and boss Ruwet. “Give me the lowdown. What are you trying to do with me?
Are they checking me for security?” Lashbrook later commented that Frank really
believed, “Everyone was in a plot to get him,” and that Frank begged him to “just
let me disappear.”
According to the documents that CIA Director William Colby gave the Olson’s in
1975, Frank Olson spent an agonizing night wandering the streets of New York,
throwing away his wallet and identification cards and told his “friend” that he was
too ashamed to go home to his wife and children, so he and Lashbrook ate a
cheerless Thanksgiving dinner at a Horn & Hardart automat in Midtown.
Late the next day, according to the spin artists at the CIA, it was decided that
Olson needed to be institutionalized – YET, when Frank Olson phone Alice that night,
he told her he felt, “much better” and “looked forward to seeing her the next day.”
That evening in Room 1018A, with Lashbook in the bed by the door Olson was calm:
he washed his socks and underwear and went to sleep.
Around 2 AM, Armand Pastore, the night manager at the Statler Hotel which is
opposite Penn Station, rushed out front on 7th Avenue to find a middle-aged man
lying on the sidewalk in his undershirt and shorts. “He was broken up something
awful,” Parstore told reporters many years later, flat on his back with his legs
smashed and bent at a terrible angle. Looking up, Pastore could see a blind pushed
through an empty window from ten floors up in the Statler – the man lying in front
of him after crashing through a closed window had fell the ten floors, but he was
still alive. “He was trying to mumble something, but I couldn’t make it out. It was
all garbled, and I was trying to get his name.” By the time the priest came along
with the ambulance, the stranger on the sidewalk was dead.
Pastore along with the police when going to Room 1081A, found a man who gave
his name as Robert Lashbrook sitting on the toilet with his head in his hands. Later
down at reception when Pastore questioned the hotel telephone operator whether
she had overheard any calls from Room 1018A she replied two. In one call a voice
had said, “He’s gone.” The voice on the other end said, “That’s too bad.” The
friendly CIA liaison admitted making two calls but has denied saying anything of the
sort. Naturally we all believe the CIA – the organization within the US Government
who supports the Jews in their denial of crucifying Jesus Christ.
The CIA’s General Counsel call immediately in 1953 for an investigation into
Olson’s death, they noted in their findings that the “official story”, that LSD
triggered the suicide with the matter was “completely inconsistent” with the ‘facts’
in the case. Disciplinary action was recommended against Sidney Gottlieb and
Robert Lashbrook – whereas the Director Allen Dulles gave them a half-day off
without pay and called it good. Robert Lashbrook left the agency, but our super-
dooper screw with their brains gentlemen Sidney Gottlieb remained with the
Langley Organization for over 20 years…during which time he continued to run LSD
experiments. Who was this guy anyway?
Joseph Scheider (Sidney Gottlieb) was born in the Bronx on August 3 rd, 1918 and
graced us all with his presence for 80.6 years until his death on March 7 th, 1999. In
the CIA, which he joined in 1951, he was known as the “Black Sorcerer” and the
“Dirty Trickster”, their kind of guy. As their “poison expert” he ran the chemical
division of the Technical Services Staff (“TSS”), where he originated and supervised
the preparation of lethal poisons and experiments in “mind control”. I’m surprised
he even got a half-day off! Within the dark halls of government Sidney Gottlieb was
a marked “Dr Strangelove”, where during his tenure he watched over vast networks
of psychological and medical experiments that were conducted in hospitals,
universities, research labs, prisons and safe houses, many of his methods carried
out on unsuspecting subjects that included mental patients, prostitutes and their
johns, drug addicts, and anyone else who fell or walked into the CIAs web. He
treated some to extended periods of sensory deprivation; while others were
drugged and made to sleep weeks in an attempt to induce an amnesia-like state
and other were subjected to looped audio tapes playing the same message over
and over again.
His goal was to also raise assassination to an art form, where coming from his labs
were poisoned handkerchief designed to do in a Libyan Colonel, a bacteriological
agent for a Congolese leader and other methods to eliminate Cuba’s Fidel Castro –
hounded by reporters, congressional investigators and his victims he finally vacated
Washington DC in the mid-1970s. And we thought Chemical Ali was a terror…by the
way Sidney Gottlieb in his early was an Orthodox Jew, later becoming a Buddist.
Over-all dear Sidney is but an obscure minor footnote in our Nation’s history, yet
for a generation of Americans who came of age in the Cold Hot War, his
experiments came to define the CIA as a “rogue agency”. His evil programs point a
straight line to a government gone wild, and even to this day because of his
projects the public perception of the Central Intelligence Agency is not too good – to
say the least.
Some outspoken critics, like Eric Olson the son of Frank Olson paint him as a Nazi
researcher whose experiments pervert science and push aside the conscience of
man – his actions have earned him a spot in Normal Mailers novel Harlot’s Ghost
and Barbara Kingsolver’s The Poisonwood Bible.
For 22 ½ years the Olson family had been lied to, or at least not truthfully told
what happened that night Alice W Olson and her three children suffered their loss.
On June 11th, 1975 the Washington Post ran a spread that said that VP Nelson
Rockefeller had learned that “a civilian employee of the Dept of the Army
unwittingly took LSD as part of a CIA test and developed serious side effects.” It
said, “After being sent to New York with a CIA escort for psychiatric treatment, the
employee jumped from a hotel window and died as a result.” The Rockefeller report
added as a footnote: “There are indications in the few remaining agency records
that this individual may have had a ‘history’ of emotional instability.”
Shortly thereafter Lisa Olson, Franks daughter, met with Lt Col Vincent Ruwet
(now retired) who had regularly visited Alice Olson, tipped a few and had become a
trusted friend of the kids. He at first stalled, but eventually confirmed the story in
the Washington Post was indeed the man Frank Olson and that he had known the
details of the story all along.
Additionally after the story ran, Seymour Hersh of The New York Times visited the
Olson’s in Fredrick – his body had not even made it across the threshold when he
remarked, “This must be the most uncurious family in the United States. I can’t
believe you fell for that story for 22 years.” The family later held a news conference
in their backyard where they announced they were going to sue the government for
wrongful death.
On July 21st, 1975 just 10 days after the story ran, and the announcement of the
suit – President Gerald Ford invited Alice, Eric, Nils, Lisa and Lisa’s husband Greg
Hayward to the White House. According to newspapers, President Ford expressed,
“the sympathy of the American people and apologized on behalf of the US
Government.” The meeting in the Oval Office lasted 17-minutes. Newly obtained
documents show that the Ford administration continued to conceal information
about Olson, in particular his role in some of the CIAs most controversial research
during the Cold War, on anthrax and other biological weapons. Two key officials
that pushed and received the okay to conceal the material were White House aide
Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld.
A week after meeting President Ford, Eric, Lisa, Nils and two lawyers met the CIA
Director, William Colby at the agencies headquarters in Langley, VA. Colby wrote
later in his memoirs that he remember that lunch as “one of the most difficult
assignments I have ever had.” He handed over a 1” thick sheaf of declassified
documents relating to Frank Olson’s death, what he did not tell them was that Frank
Olson had not been a civilian employee of the Dept of Army, but had been a CIA
employee working at Ft Detrick. The Colby documents were photocopies of the
agency’s in-house investigation of Olson’s death, a redacted jumble of fragments,
full of unexplained terms like the “Artichoke” and “Bluebird” projects preliminary
projects that were later rolled under the MK-ULTRA CIA project, that started at the
beginning of the Korean War that explored the use of drugs like LSD as truth
serums, as well as experiments with botulism and anthrax.
The received document convinced the family that Frank’s death was not a “simple
suicide”, but their fragmented assembly did not provide any evidence that it wasn’t
– you think the CIA would hand over documents that would? In 1976, after
negotiations in which they traded away their “right” to further civil or criminal
proceeding against the government, they received a total of $750,000 whereas the
White House had requested a ½ million more but members of Congress pitched a
bitch.
Eric Olson, after a hiatus to Sweden returned to Room 1018A, recalling this
strange night later he said, “It just hit you, the room was simply too small for my
father to have gained the speed to take a running plunge through the window. The
sill was too high and too wide, there was a radiator in front of it – in other words for
him to have dived through a closed window and a lowered blind in the dark.”
Eric, Nils and Alice (now a recovering alcoholic) tracked down Robert Lashbrook
living on Ojai, California and watched him twitch and turn in his chair as he told
them, “I was awakened by a crash, saw a broken window and an empty bed and
concluded that Frank Olson had jumped to his death.”
The family now realized they had run into a “brotherhood of silence”, one which
their father once belonged to – it was as one former Detrick employee called it, “a
community of saints” dedicated to using the most fearful and secret science to
defend the Republic.
It was learned much later that Frank Olson’s specialty was the development of
aerosols to be used to spread anthrax – while the discovery in the 1950s of the
North Koreans practicing methods of brainwashing and interrogation he was also
working extensively with LSD as one of the interrogation drugs being tested. Alice
Olson testified she never really knew what her husband did at Ft Detrick, or even
that he was working for the CIA.

During the preceding week, at what particular time or why Frank Olson made up
his mind that what he was doing went against his conscience, and wanted to jump
ship. If you study the names on the invitation to Deer Creek Lodge, you see that
these were a bunch of guys getting together to go fishing. These players were high-
powered influential shadows in the world of espionage, players who treated
“collateral damage” as an step in achieving their goal, players who drove to work
every day hoping they would achieve another dark goal on either how to burrow
deeper into a man’s mind or eliminate another him from the planet.
The scheduled get-away in western Virginia was to discuss projects shifting
through the minds of Gottlieb, whereas 2-months later project MK-ULTRA surfaced
and black funds from Congress were spend freely in the development of a death
machine you’d find hard to equal today….I say hard to find in that believe me the
machine over the years has been well oiled and refined by too many countries and
their administrations, making any movie made by Hollywood appear as archaic.
In late 1953 we find a naïve American patriotic scientist, after a trip to Sweden,
Germany and Britain realizing that he and his group were no different than the
Nazi’s tried at Nuremberg. He told William Sargant, a consultant psychiatrist who
advised British intelligence on brainwashing techniques that he had witnessed at a
American-British testing and research installation near Frankfurt where they were
testing interrogation and truth serums on Russian agents and ex-Nazi’s. He went as
far as to tell Sargant he had witnessed a “terminal experiment” on more than one
individual and it shook him up. Sargant listened and immediately after Frank went
back home reported him to British Intelligence and told them of Frank’s misgivings
about what he had witnessed, whereas Sargant expressed his concern that Frank
represented a security risk and recommended that Frank be denied further access
to “Porton Down”, the British chemical-weapons research center. Documents found
later in Frank’s personal file, released by Colby confirmed that doubts had been
raised about his security clearance.
Here we have an accomplished scientist who because of what he witnessed in
Europe coupled with the information he was exposed to at Deer Creek Lodge made
a decision he no-longer wanted to participate. Whereas walking into his bosses
office the Monday and Tuesday following the events at Deer Creek Lodge and
demanding he be able to retire from the den of killers, would more than likely have
lifted an eyebrow or two. A fact in retrospect led to the conclusion of elimination,
where putting him in a hospital, or discrediting him with lies about his mental
condition and then allowing him to slip back into civilian life was not an option –
kind of like trying to retire from a crime syndicate, it just isn’t done.
In this light, slipping him LSD during that previous week with his peers and bosses
clustered around him was not designed as an accident, but deliberate move to get
him to talk while hallucinating – they then packed him up and took him to NYC to
assess what kind of risk he posed and then eliminate him if necessary. Housing a
possibly deranged and desperate man (as they painted him) high above 7 th Avenue
was NOT a regrettable error, but a prelude to murder, and act of human proportions
that is not a new avenue within the CIA, or for that matter in any other government.
An inadvertent declassified CIA Manual constructed in 1953, stated, “The most
efficient accident, in simple assassination, is a fall of 75 feet or more onto a hard
surface. Elevator shafts, stairwells, unscreened windows and bridges will serve…
The act may be executed by sudden, vigorous excised of the ankles, tipping the
subject over the edge.” The manual also recommended a blow to the temple to
stun the subject first – “In chase cases it will usually be necessary to stun or drug
the subject before dropping him.”
People involved in the investigation of Frank Olson’s demise now realized that the
CIA and President Ford had lied, and that a “perfect” murder had been
accomplished.
In 1994 the family had Frank’s body exhumed, remember at the funeral I 1953 the
coffin was closed under advisement from the government where they said that the
body was too broken up and the face had extensive lacerations due to crashing
through the window glass – the body proved to have been embalmed and the face
showed no evidence of extensive lacerations in the bone structure.
James Starrs of George Washington University who was leading the forensic team
did however discover that before the fall, Frank had experienced on the left side of
his head a blow to his temple, which caused a massive release of blood under
unbroken skin – the team all agreed that the blow had occurred NOT from the fall.
Their conclusion that someone had knocked Olson out, either while he slept or after
a struggle and then thrown/dropped him out the window.
Who were these killers? Investigation by H.P. Albarelli managed to locate retired
CIA agents in Florida who told him that the men who killed Olson were contract
killers associated with the “Trafficanted” family hired by the CIA – legal
representatives have not talked to H.P. Albarelli’s sources, even though the sources
have been granted immunity – they’re response to not traveling to Florida and
conducting an interview is that they don’t believe H.P. Albarelli and “How do you
know these people exist?”
The National Security Blanket, since the end of World War II today is used to hide
a myriad of slick projects conducted by the United States Government, and the
reasons are as diverse as releasing data on the power output of a toaster to the
development on anthrax to be used in the Korean War and continues on today –
especially since 9-11. As far back as July 11th, 1975 when the Olson’s first held a
news conference Dick Cheney wrote a memo to Donald Rumsfeld (then Chief of
Staff at the White House), whereas the memo warned, “the possibility that it might
be necessary to disclose highly classified national-security information in connection
with any court suit or legislative hearing on a private bill.” Other documents
surfaced written by Robert Hills the White House counsel that were and routed
through Dick Cheney stated, “Dr Olson’s job is so sensitive that it is highly unlikely
that we would submit “relevant” evidence” to a court, this document also in
reference to the potential suit by the Olson’s. It went on to state, “If there is a trail,
it is apparent that the Olson’s lawyer will seek to explore all the circumstances of Dr
Olson’s employment as well as those concerning his death. Thus, in the trail, it may
become apparent that we are concealing evidence for National-Security reasons
and any settlement or judgment reached thereafter could be perceived as money
paid to cover up the activities of the CIA.” He (Hills) strongly urged settling the case
out of court - $750,000.
Since the early morning hours of November 28 th, 1953 Frank Olson’s fall from a
ten-story hotel window has plagued the dark world of the CIA, the vault of American
secrecy and deceit, an operation that has its fingers spread across the world – since
its creation in September 1947, when the National Security Act of 1947 established
the National Security Council and the Central Intelligence Agency and the
appointment of Rear Admiral Roscoe H Hillenkoetter to the CIA, has never looked
back, and this holds true when it comes to their devious and life ending projects.

Soon after Olson's death, Gottlieb, posing as a Pentagon employee, paid his
respects to Alice Olson at her home
