Chapter 1 Its a Modish World.

Modern Fashion

What does the word fashion mean?

Fashion is a popular style or practice, especially in clothing, footwear,
accessories, makeup, body piercing, or furniture. Fashion is a distinctive and often
habitual trend in the style in which a person dresses. It is the prevailing styles in
behavior and the newest creations of textile designers. Because the more technical
term costume is regularly linked to the term "fashion", the use of the former has
been relegated to special senses like fancy dress or masquerade wear, while
"fashion" generally means clothing, including the study of it. Although aspects of
fashion can be feminine or masculine, some trends are androgynous

Chapter 2 Its a Design World.

What Is the Fashion Industry?

The fashion industry is a product of the modern age. Prior to the mid-19th
century, virtually all clothing was handmade for individuals, either as home
production or on order from dressmakers and tailors. By the beginning of the 20th
centurywith the rise of new technologies such as the
sewing machine, the rise of global capitalism and the
development of the factory system of production, and the
proliferation of retail outlets such as department stores
clothing had increasingly come to be mass-produced in
standard sizes and sold at fixed prices. Although the
fashion industry developed first in Europe and America,
today it is an international and highly globalized industry,
with clothing often designed in one country,
manufactured in another, and sold in a third. For example,
an American fashion company might source fabric in China and have the clothes
manufactured in Vietnam, finished in Italy, and shipped to a warehouse in the
United States for distribution to retail outlets internationally. The fashion industry
has long been one of the largest employers in the United States, and it remains so in
the 21st century. However,
employment declined
considerably as production
increasingly moved overseas,
especially to China.
Because data on the fashion
industry typically are
reported for national economies
and expressed in terms of
the industrys many separate
sectors, aggregate figures
for world production of textiles
and clothing are difficult to
obtain. However, by any
measure, the industry inarguably accounts for a significant share of world economic
output.

The fashion industry consists of four levels: the production of raw materials,
principally fibers and textiles but also leather and fur; the production of fashion
goods by designers, manufacturers, contractors, and others; retail sales; and various
forms of advertising and promotion. These levels
consist of many separate but interdependent
sectors, all of which are devoted to the goal of
satisfying consumer demand for apparel under
conditions that enable participants in the industry
to
operate at a profit.

Chapter 3 Its a Fashion Career.

Even if youve never done a sketch or sewn a button, you can have a career in
fashion. Being a designer is obviously one of the most visible roles you can have in
the industry, but talent and skill are required. Its a huge industry and there are a
multitude of jobs available; you can find one to suit your temperament and talents.
Here are a few suggestions and ideas for getting started (and keep in mind this is
more of an overview than a comprehensive list):

Where to look for opportunities

Be present online
When it comes to the fashion industry today, the most important place you
can be is online. Use search engines, blogger networks and social media to keep
tabs on fashion platforms both in your area and abroad. Most organizations will
have a link to their jobs page. There are also many sites that serve as hubs for jobs
in the fashion industry. Social
media networks like LinkedIn
are also great platforms to find
opportunities. Make a habit of
checking these pages regularly,
and apply as soon as
something comes up. It
shouldnt be necessary to

stress how important it is to tailor each cover letter to the job youre applying for.
Highlight your strong points and indicate clearly how they will benefit the
company.

Look for a fashion internship

The best place to start is with an internship. Even if youve studied something
fashion-related, nothing beats real-world experience. You have to be totally okay
with starting at the bottom. A fashion internship is guaranteed to round off your
textbook knowledge and develop your skills. Additionally, an internship every so
often serves as an extended job interview and could land you a permanent position.
Fashion internships can be best divided into two main categories: fashion
magazine internships and fashion design internships. As with all internships, the
more prepared you are and the more knowledge you have of the magazine ore
design house you wish to intern for, the greater your chances of actually landing the
internships and being given greater responsibility once there.
Fashion Magazine: Fashion magazine internships are those made famous by
popular television series and films. There are hundreds of different magazines,
ranging from the high-end pure fashion magazines such as Vogue to the womenfocused magazines such as Glamour and Cosmopolitan. These are the ones that set
the trends - they pick up on what's happening in the design world and broadcast it to
the world - and people interested working at a fashion magazine are those
immensely interested in the fashion industry with a good know-how, but no desire
to actually be involved in the production process.
Roles and duties of a fashion magazine intern include, but are not limited to:
basic administrative and other tasks (possibly the least glamorous side of a fashion
internship and one often forgotten, but a very big part of an intern's responsibilities)

such as making coffee, running errands, sorting files and paperwork; researching
current fashion trends and finding celebrity and/or model images to support these;
researching ideas for possible fashion articles and, if granted the opportunity,
actually writing these; and assisting with photo shoots for the magazine.
As with fashion magazine internships, fashion design interns will often be
required to handle basic administrative and other tasks, but they will also be able to
observe and - depending on the fashion house - help out with the creation of fashion
items. This may be focused on a particular type of item, depending, again, on the
type of fashion house and your particular interest, or on generalities. This type of
internship is a lot more practical than the fashion magazine internship and a greater
knowledge of fashion design - fabrics, dressmaking, etc. - is hugely beneficial and
may often be required.

3 Places for Fashion Internships

New York City, USA:

The city that never sleeps is

also the one at the top of the fashion
world. It has one of the highest
concentrations of established and upand-coming designers, primarily
because of its many fashion schools,
is unique in its concentration of
showrooms and fashion labels in the
Garment Center district, has an
incomparable wholesale market, and
is home to a wealth of fashion media
outlets. New York's Fashion Week is also the biggest event of its kind and kicks off
other fashion weeks in London, Paris, and Milan. Regardless of whether you wish
to be a magazine or a design intern, New York's fashion makes it the perfect place
to be.

London, UK:
London has recently risen to the peak of the fashion world, primarily due to the
successful hosting of the 2012 Olympic Games and Kate Middleton's influential
style choices. Like New York, London is a fashion hotspot, boasting a variety of
international fashion houses, top magazines, and it is home to many leading
designers. It is also closely linked to the rest of Europe, and is the city to be in for
magazine and design internships.

Milan, Italy:

No fashion list would be complete without the inclusion of Milan. The city
has had a long history with fashion and is still one of the fashion capitals of the
world. It is home to most major Italian fashion houses - including Prada, Armani,
Dolce & Gabbana, and Versace - and is renowned for its Fashion Week. Milan is
possibly the fashion design capital of the world and is sure to make any fashion
design intern's dreams come true.

Conclusion:

In conclusion I may say, that the concept of fashion was created by the
upper class as a way to distinguish themselves from the lower classes,
fashion has had a significant role in our culture and continues to do so
today. The Fashion Industry has impacted not only the clothes we wear

and who we are on the outside, but also, who we are on the inside.
Fashion can be found anywhere and everywhere and because of these
many people is involved. Fashion was and still is a matter of popularity
and taste and is constantly changing and evolving. From sociological
point of view, fashion is about the collective ways of making
connections with others and, at the same time, making differences
(Kaiser). Even today, the fashion industry continues to impact the
societys views on status, body image and finance.
