RuskinBondwasbornon19May1934inamilitaryhospital,toEdithClarkeandAubreyBond.His
siblingswereEllenandWilliam.Atpresent,hissisterEllenlivesinJallandhar,Punjabandbrother
WilliamlivesinCanada.Ruskin'sfatherwaswiththeRoyalAirForce.WhenBondwasfouryearsold,
hismotherseparatedfromhisfatherandmarriedaPunjabiHindu,Mr.Hari,whohimselfhadbeen
marriedonce.
BondspenthisearlychildhoodinVijayanagar(Gujarat),JamnagarandShimla.AttheageoftenRuskin
wenttoliveathisgrandmother'shouseinDehradunafterhisfather'ssuddendeathin1944frommalaria.
Ruskinwasraisedbyhisgrandmother.HecompletedhisschoolingatBishopCottonSchoolinShimla,
fromwherehegraduatedin1952afterwinningseveralwritingcompetitionsintheschoolliketheIrwin
DivinityPrizeandtheHaileyLiteraturePrize.Hewrotehisfirstshortstory,Untouchable,attheageof
sixteenin1950.
Followinghishighschooleducationhewenttohisaunt'shouseinChannelIslandsinEnglandand
stayedthereforfouryears.InLondonhestartedwritinghisfirstnovel,TheRoomontheRoof,thesemi
autobiographicalstoryoftheorphanedAngloIndianboyRusty.Itwonthe1957JohnLlewellynRhys
Prize,awardedtoaBritishCommonwealthwriterunder30.Bondusedtheadvancemoneyfromthe
booktopaytheseapassagetoBombay.HeworkedforsomeyearsasajournalistinDelhiand
Dehradun.Since1963hehaslivedasafreelancewriterinMussoorie,atownintheHimalayan

paranormalledhimtowritepopulartitlessuchasGhostStoriesfromtheRaj,ASeasonofGhosts,andA
FaceintheDarkandotherHauntings.
HecurrentlyliveswithhisadoptivefamilyinLandour,Mussoorie'sIvyCottage,whichhasbeenhis
housesince1964.

duringtheIndianRebellionof1857).ItwasproducedbyShashiKapooranddirectedbyShyam
Benegal.
RuskinBondmadehismaidenbigscreenappearancewithacameoinVishalBhardwaj'sfilm7Khoon
Maaf,basedonhisshortstorySusanna'sSevenHusbands.BondappearsasaBishopinthemoviewith
PriyankaChopraplayingthetitlerole.[2]BondhadearliercollaboratedwithhimintheTheBlue
Umbrellawhichwasalsobasedonhisstory.

Literarystyle
MostofhisworksareinfluencedbylifeinthehillstationsatthefoothillsoftheHimalayas,wherehe
spenthischildhood.Hisfirstnovel,TheRoomOntheRoof,waswrittenwhenhewas17andpublished
whenhewas21.ItwaspartlybasedonhisexperiencesatDehradun,inhissmallrentedroomonthe
roof,andhisfriends.Sincethenhehaswrittenoverthreehundredshortstories,essaysandnovels,
includingVagrantsinTheValley,TheBlueUmbrella,FunnySideUp,AFlightofPigeonsandmore
than30booksforchildren.Hehasalsopublishedtwovolumesofautobiography.ScenesfromaWriter's
LifedescribeshisformativeyearsgrowingupinAngloIndiaTheLampisLitisacollectionofessays
andepisodesfromhisjournal.
Bondsaidthatwhilehisautobiographicalwork,RainintheMountains,wasabouthisyearsspentin
Mussoorie,ScenesfromaWriter'sLifedescribedhisfirst21years.ScenesfromaWriter'sLifefocuses
onBond'striptoEngland,hisstruggletofindapublisherforhisfirstbookTheRoomontheRoofand
hisyearningtocomebacktoIndia,particularlytoDoon."Italsotellsalotaboutmyparents",saidBond.
"Thebookendswiththepublicationofmyfirstnovelandmydecisiontomakewritingmylivelihood",
Bondsaid,adding:"Basically,itdescribeshowIbecameawriter".
Hisnovel,TheFlightofPigeons,hasbeenadaptedintothefilmJunoon.TheRoomontheRoofhasbeen
adaptedintoaBBCproducedTVseries.Severalstorieshavebeenincorporatedintheschoolcurriculum
inIndia,including"TheNightTrainatDeoli","TimeStopsatShamli"andOurTreesStillGrowin
Dehra.In2007,theBollywooddirectorVishalBhardwajmadeafilmbasedonhispopularnovelfor
children,TheBlueUmbrella.ThemoviewontheNationalAwardforBestChildren'sfilm.
