SERIES 4100
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
1.1

General Information

The Series 4100 is a completely new generation of high performance Software

Defined Radios.
In comparison to former radios, SDRs realize the essential radio functions no longer
in hardware but software. This offers the possibility to load new or alter present
functionality (e.g. modem waveforms) by the exchange or adding of software
components alone. The radios hardware must not be changed in such cases.
The essential features of this concept are:

The modulator, demodulator and audio functionality of the radio is re alized as

Digital Signal Processor (DSP) software

Radio properties (e.g. User channels, Keysets, Hopsets) are configured by a PC

based radio management software and then loaded as SW into the radio

The user interface is menu oriented and easy to use. The modern control philosophy
and the arrangement of the control elements allow an i ntuitive control of the radio.
The different radio modi (e.g. ALE, Modem) are administrated by so -called pre-set
pages. They contain a complete setting of the radios parameter and net specific
adjustments and allow the user to easily switch between different modi to achieve the
wanted interoperability between him and his partners.
These pre-set pages are comfortably put together with a PC based network
management tool, and then loaded into the radio via one of its digital interfaces (e.g.
Ethernet) or a special Fill Gun before a mission starts.
Software Defined Radios help to cut costs by skilled logistics.
The provision of spare parts, the whole goods handling process as well as the
expense for user training is reduced drastically compared to former generations of
radios.

SERIES 4100

Software Defined Radio for Naval Communications

The HF Transceiver Family SERIES 4100 can be used in shipborne and stationary
applications. The rugged hardware complies with the relevant MIL -STDs dealing with
environmental conditions. All radio functionality can be remote controlled by
appropriate SW or special naval communication SW solutions (e.g. R&S SIMCOS).
All components of a Series 4100 radio system are supervised by a Built-in test (BIT)
which provides three modi:

Power On BIT (PBIT)

Continuous BIT (CBIT)
Initiated BIT
(IBIT)
5

SERIES 4100
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
PBIT is performed always after powering the unit.
CBIT is performed permanently during operation.
IBIT is user-initiated BIT.
The BIT enables a failure location down to module level. Module failures are stored in
a log file for later evaluation.

EPM waveform R&SSECOM-H (option for SERIES 4100)

R&SSECOM-H is a R&S proprietary HF slow hopping waveform, developed at the
principles of STANAG-4444.
This EPM waveform is well-suited to work under difficult HF conditions where a
certain percentage of hopset frequencies are blocked. This may be the case due to
either intentional disturbances (i.e. jamming) or non-intentional ones like extremes of
delay and Doppler spreading in the HF path.
R&SSECOM-H provides Digital Voice (low bit rate vocoders at 1200 bps,
2400 bps) and Data Services (300 bps up to 2400 bps).
R&SSECOM-H makes use of a powerful encryption. The COMSEC part is based on
the RSCA crypto algorithm that uses key lengths of up to 256 bits (approx. 10 77
variants). Assuming uninterrupted transmission, the same bit sequence would be
repeated after about 2 x 10 9 years. The TRANSEC part of R&SSECOM-H is derived
from the COMSEC part internally.
To plan SECOM-H communication networks, a PC based radio network
management tool (R&S RNMS3000) is available.
SECOM-H can be configured to transmit the user data in Point-to-Point, Point-toMultipoint and Broadcast modes.

Toggle Switch ON / OFF

ON means that power supply is ready for use.

OFF means that power supply is in stand-by mode.
For complete switch-off a main circuit breaker at the power supplys rear
panel must be in off-state.
The LEDs at the frontpanel are only working if power supply is in ready for
use state.
The LED indicates the operating state not later than 200ms after incidence
of the concerning operating condition.

LED, green

POWER

2.2.1 Digitally Tuned RF Selectors

The Digitally Tuned RF Selectors R&SFK4120 / R&SFK4140 are optional plug-in

modules for the Series 4100, that enhances the selectivity of both the transmitter and
receiver path.

Digitally Tuned RF Selector, 20dB

R&SFK4140

6119.6003.02

Digitally Tuned RF Selector, 40dB

Highlights are:

Five-pole lowpass (0 Hz to 1.5 MHz) for receive frequencies below 1.5 MHz

Tunable tracking bandpass filters (1.5 MHz to 30 MHz) with stoppband

attenuation of 20dB / 40dB at 10% frequency offset.

Automatic tracking both in reception and transmission mode

Input voltage protection up to 200V EMF

R&SFK4120 / R&SFK4140 are both capable of frequency hopping acc. to

R&SSECOM-H.
