MAYA SHIVAM

he third Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame

is upon us. Every year, this event
is the culmination of all the effort,
growth and development of a team of
people.
Last year, on our fifth-anniversary issue,
we described how Indian Weekender was
made up of five elements (of success) and
gave pictorial representations of our claim.
We also described the power of the
five elements, thus making it a whole, a
complete entity.
However, a year has gone by and in the
meanwhile Indian Weekender has grown,
evolved and developed. We are now poised
to take the logical next step and we have a
new claim to make this year.
Our whole cosmic quest of the world
and beyond starts from the point of
panchabhuta (five elements).
However, let us first try to understand
these five elements, which are Earth or
Prithvi, Water or Jal, Fire or Agni, Air or
Vayu, and Ether or Akasha. Each of these
five elements has its own character.
Earth (Prithvi): One can touch the
earth and smell it too. However, there
are two types of earthone is eternal
(nitya) which is in the form of an atom
(paramanu).
The other type is perishable (anitya),
which exists in the form of karya or work
at animate and inanimate levels.

Water (Jal): The second element also

has two characters i.e. eternal in the shape
of atom and karya (work) be it as river,
pond or sea that are perishable. From
seas and rivers, the water evaporates into
the sky where clouds are formed. These

clouds are then our primary source of

water. So the eternal atom only changes
its karya or shape, and what we see is
the perishable form. Through our sensory
organs, we can touch it, feel it and taste it
as well.

Air (Vayu): The third element also has

two levels i.e. eternal atom and perishable
Karya. One can feel the air as we breathe in
and out. We can feel the temporary storm
or the strong breeze, but air at the atomic
level remains around us eternally.
Fire (Agni): The fourth element
of Indian Panchabhuta is fire. Like the
above three, it has eternal and perishable
elements. The essential character of fire is
to generate heat.
Ether (Akasha): The last of the
Panchabhuta or five elements is sound.
Ether is unique, as it has only one character
i.e. eternal.
Ether is the carrier of sound, be it manmade or otherwise. One can hear it. As
ether is the only eternal element of the
five elements, it attracted the attention of
numerous sages.
The concept of Akashvani or divine
sound, which is heard by sages of higher
order, is related to this Ether or Akasha.
It is said that our universe was created
out of the manifestation of five elements.
This has been elaborately described in the .
The cosmic body is a grand total of the
material bodies mentioned above. The
first and pure manifestation of these five
elements is the inner conscience and bodily
organs.
There are other points of view that
suggest that life is more complicated, and
even though we may be made up of these

five elements, how these elements will

manifest and function and their power will
play a role in our lives, is dependent on a
sixth element the soul.
However, we need to evolve and develop
in order to live this extra sensory life, to
develop our sixth sense and, therefore, live
a soulful life.
If our community can be described
as being made up of the five elements,
then the Indian Weekender can truly be
described as the soul of the community and

community in a positive light. It helps to

bring to the fore the achievements and the
contributions of the Indian community to

that we have received. Although media

all over the world is criticised and vilified
for creating rifts, for sensationalising
facts, for judging and slandering, the
Indian Weekender is one publication that
can hold its head high and claim that we
have dedicated ourselves to bringing the
positive to the people and always focused
on the brighter aspects of the community.
Over the six-year journey of the Indian
Weekender, it has become the voice of
Kiwi Indians, speaking the language of
the community and for the community. It

has truly grown to become a huge part of

the lives of Kiwi Indians.
The crowning glory for this goes to no
one else but our readers, advertisers and
our supporters. If it werent for all their
support, we would not have been placed
how we are placed today.
Similarly with the Kiwi Indian Hall of
Fame. It started three years ago and today
has reached a whole new level. This year, we
celebrate three years of the introduction of
this award that has grown to be the highest
honour of the Kiwi Indian Community.
This year, we have proudly introduced
two new awards the Kiwi Indian Young
Achiever awarded to an individual in
recognition of incomparable achievements
at a young age, and Kiwi Indian Unsung
Hero in recognition for their outstanding
selfless contribution to the community.
There has been a lot of excitement about
this event from not only the Kiwi Indian
community but also from the larger New
Zealand community.
Our major supporters are our sponsors
for the event, political parties and
community organisations.
The current issue follows the theme
of the Indian Weekender being the sixth
element and the stories that follow prove
just that to the readers.
So heres a toast to yet another year of
hard work, passion, team collaboration
and the spirit of service to the community.
We hope you enjoy reading this issue.

hence the sixth element.

Like an evolved soul remains focused
on the creator, connected to the divine
and hence the positive, the Indian
Weekender prides itself in bringing out the

the larger Kiwi community.

We are now confident that we are serving
the community better than ever before,
judging by the congratulatory messages

stands of everything that is constructive

and hence has become the pride of the
community, transcending all age groups,
sections and classes. Indian Weekender

economy rests on six effective
strategies, namely connectivity,
interface, content, standard,
relationships and services. When
we apply these factors to IWK, the
following comes up.

The first point of connecting

with our readers is, of course,
the news magazine we publish
every week. But then, we dont
know who exactly is picking
them up from the distribution
points across Auckland and six
other cities across the country.
So we have a subscription-based
newsletter that we e-mail to 5,000
odd readers. This is a collation of
news and views from within the
community with weblinks to the
original articles uploaded in our
online newspaper.
Our
business
directory
connects us with our advertisers.
You can subscribe to the business
directory by entering your
details and your business will be
advertised free of cost with our
editorial content. That ensures a
few thousand people get to know
about you for no extra effort.

Readers
feedbacks
on
our articles are by far the
most traditional channel of
connectivity for any media and
we make sure this opportunity
is always kept open. Our readers

are the sole reason why we exist.

As such, we do put them on a
pedestal and urge them to use
IWK as a mouthpiece for any
issue that they feel needs to be
highlighted or talked about.

n interface is a point
or a device where two
systems, subjects or
organisations meet and interact.
IWK Facebook is one such
platform where we connect with
our well-wishers and readers on
a daily basis. Their compliment
infuses us with positive energy,
while their constructive feedback
guides us to strive for better
results. We have more than 1,500
dedicated likes on our Facebook
group, with the numbers growing
every daily.
We also re-post our updates on
other Facebook groups that have
high volumes of user traffic from
within the community as a means
to ensure that Kiwi Indians
dont miss out on important
information.
Our Twitter feed has enough
followers to soak in not only
the information disseminated
for their consumption but
also the human interest stories
our
editorial
team
keeps
churning out.
Lately, we have entered
another interface to interact
with our readers, which we have
named VDO Videos Define us
as One. Through this platform,
we capture audiovisual bytes
from our readers on certain issues
that we found are affecting the
community at large. The VDOs
we have uploaded have received
an unprecedented number of
views much higher than we
had anticipated. We would like
to thank our readers for their
support in this respect, mostly
because it is encouraging us to
produce more quality reporting.
www.iwk.co.nz is our original
interface. We have had it for a
few years now and the first point
of our digital profile. What is
interesting is that our technical
team is busy coming up with
a brand new website in a few
weeks. Stay tuned to find out our
new look. Do remember to send
us feedback.
We also have a mobile
application
of
our
news
magazine. If you have not
already, you should download it
to keep abreast with the news and
views about the community, at
your fingertips.
As if this is not enough, we
recently created a Facebook page
called United we stand, for a
community of thinking people
who stand together for a cause.
People who are willing to support
each other and to stay united.
It is picking up likes at a steady
pace. Do remember to join the
Facebook page, in case there is
a cause you wish to bring to the
attention of policy-makers.

Kiwi indian hall of Fame sails into its third year of honouring the
best in the community
ESHA CHANDA
HumblE bEginningS

n March 2009, the Indian

society in New Zealand
was introduced to Indian
Weekender then a fortnightly
newspaper that would bring
the latest news pertaining
to the community with a
fresh perspective.
It is an initiative by Giri Gupta,
a man armed with the passion
to promote Indian culture and
heritage in New Zealand, along
with co-publisher Bhav Dhillon,
who has helped shape the success
story of Indian Weekender.
Over the years, the newspaper
not only connected the community
successfully, but also managed
to become New Zealands fastest
growing Indian publication.
Four years after its launch,
Indian Weekender reached one
of its biggest milestones: the
100th issue was published and
the first Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame
was organised.
It started off as a mere thought
to recognise the works done by
New Zealands Indians, which
later shaped the most-awaited
event for the community.
The idea triggered when Mr
Gupta read about the nomination
received by Indian-American
inventor Rangaswamy Srinivasan
for the National Medal of
Technology for Innovation, for
his ground breaking contribution
to laser eye surgery.
He became the first person of
Indian origin to be inducted into
the US Inventors Hall of Fame.
And thus began the journey of
Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame.
The process of choosing
was simple. Members of the
community were asked to
nominate individuals who they
thought were worthy of the award.
These individuals could be from
any walks of life, such as politics
and governance, business,
agriculture, sport and
community.
A
committee
was set

up to shortlist all the nominations

and after deliberate discussions, a
person would be chosen to receive
the honour.
The Kiwi Indian Hall of
Fame was started with an aim
to bring forward the success
stories of the Indian community;
to honour the ones who have
contributed towards the society.
It is an evening to celebrate and
honour the achievements of
New Zealands Indians for their
immense contribution to the
development and progress of
their second home.
Indians have been making us
proud for the past many years and
with Kiwi Indian
Hall of
Fame,
a

benchmark
was
set
to
applaud
their
efforts.
DOWn
THE
mEmOry lAnE
The year 2013 saw the
hosting of the first Kiwi Indian
Hall of Fame. It was a roaring
success - an event that would be
etched in the history of Indians in
New Zealand.
The evening at Pullman

Hotel in Auckland Central saw

chief guest Prime Minister John
Key induct Kanwaljit Singh
Bakshi into the institution at the
inaugural event. Bakshi is a New
Zealand politician and a member
of the National Party.
He was the first member of
Indian origin to be elected into
the 49th New Zealand Parliament
in 2008. A modest Bakshi was
humbled by the honour and in
his acceptance speech shared
his delight at receiving an
unexpected award.
With
more
than
200
distinguished
guests
that
included Penny Simmonds (Chief
Executive, Southern Institute of
Technology), David Hisco (CEO,
ANZ) and Mayor Tim Shabolt,
the event was a culmination of
months of hard work put in by the
team of Indian Weekender.
The next year saw more
enthusiasm. The crme de la
crme of the society gathered
under the roof of Pullman Hotel
for the second year to honour
the
achievements
of
the
community members.
In the presence of more than
200 attendees, Prime Minister
John Key awarded Auckland
District Court judge Ajit Swaran
Singh the second recipient of
the prestigious honour.
The
dignitaries
included
Indian
High
Commissioner
of New Zealand Ravi Thapar,
Members of Parliament Todd
McClay, Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi,
Rajen Prasad, Phil Goff, David
Shearer, Winston Peters, Jamie
Ross and Sam Lotu-Iiga.
The evening that was kicked
off with the traditional lighting of

the earthen lamp, saw a classical

dance performance and a
song rendition.
Out of the 35 entries that
year, the independent jury
chose Singh for his outstanding
credentials and achievements as
a lawyer, judge and a community
leader. A man of distinction,
his contribution in promoting
the honour and prestige of New
Zealand, Fiji and India has
been invaluable.
THrEE STrikES
After
two
consecutive
successful events, in its third
year, the Indian Weekender (also
referred to as IWK) team decided
to take yet another step forward
and introduce two awards: the
Kiwi Indian Young Achiever and
the Kiwi Indian Unsung Hero of
the year.
This year, apart from inducting
a member of the community into
the Hall of Fame, IWK asked the
society to nominate individuals in
two additional categories.
The Kiwi Indian Young
Achiever will be bestowed upon
a young Kiwi Indian, between
the age of 16 and 35, who has
done exceptionally well in his/her
field be it academics, sports,
art, culture or community service.
The award was introduced with
an aim to encourage young
Kiwi Indians and support their
future endeavours.
The young souls amongst us
are a force to reckon with. They
bring in their fresh perspectives,
novel ideas and an unmatched
enthusiasm that will take
our society towards a better
future. And, therefore, with this
award, IWK hopes to recognise

their talents and honour the

contribution of todays youth.
The second new award this
year is the Kiwi Indian Unsung
Hero. As the name suggests, IWK
decided to dedicate an award to
those individuals who contribute
immensely towards the society
but have not been recognised for
their efforts.
IWK is looking at such
achievers who work not for fame,
monetary or personal gains
they work regardless of those
aspects. They are the masked
heroes of the society who make
our lives better; the ones who have
dedicated their entire life to serve
our community. Touching the
lives of thousands and enriching
the society with their work, they
truly are the unsung heroes. With
this new award, IWK wants to
applaud their efforts.
Like the last two years, the
chief guest at the occasion will
be Prime Minister John Key. The
event will also be graced by the
presence of other members of
Parliament, including Winston
Peters, David Shearer, Kanwaljit
Singh Bakshi and Mahesh Bindra.
The stellar evening will
be
packed
with
cultural
performances, scrumptious food
and the unveiling of the sixthanniversary and Hall of Fame
issue of Indian Weekender.
With three awards to grace
the third year of Kiwi Indian
Hall of Fame, we look forward to
unfolding the excitement on the
evening of May 28 at Langham
Hotel in Auckland Central; an
event that we are sure will remain
in the hearts of our community
long after the evening is over.

he governments Budget,
delivered on 21 May
by Finance Minister
Bill English, focuses on fiscal
prudence and maintaining a
steady course. But surprisingly,
after English spent days talking
down expectations in this area,
child poverty was the central
theme this year.
The governments economic
forecast
remains
upbeat.
Economic growth is expected
to average 2.8% over the next
four years. This is strong growth
by New Zealand standards and,
whats more, it is not driven by
inflation, which this year is at a
staggeringly low 0.1%.
The
elusive
surplus
has continued to elude the

government, which came as a

surprise to no one. The fiscal
priorities are returning to surplus
and using those surpluses to
fund modest tax cuts and reduce
net debt to 20% of GDP (or
lower if greater-than-expected
surpluses allow). What will be
of a concern for the government
is that the forecast surplus for
next year also looks wafer thin, at
$176 million.

have a safe long weekend

nother long weekend

is approaching. Hence,
we are sharing with you
a discussion about how to stay
safe during the long weekend that
Jessica Phuang, Asian Liaison
Officer from Auckland Central
Police had with Acting Senior
Sergeant Ashley Gore of the Road
Policing Team at Auckland City
District Police.
Jessica:
Acting Senior
Sergeant
gore,
weve
been telling our Asian
communities about keeping
safe when they drive long
distances, especially on long
weekends. What are the key
messages that you can share
with them?
Ashley: We are very keen for
people to travel safely on our
roads. They can do this by sticking
to the speed limits, driving to the
conditions and ensuring that
all occupants in the vehicle are
wearing their seatbelts. Drivers
should remember that the speed
limits are not targets, they are the
maximum speeds you can drive at
when conditions are good.
Jessica: So you mean to
say people should be more
cautious of the weather now?
Ashley: We are going into
winter and the roads may be
slippery because of rain. There
are fewer daylight hours and

drivers can also get caught out

by sun strike. Added to variable
weather conditions is increased
traffic volumes as people try to go
away on a short holiday.
Jessica: it seems that there is
a lot happening on the roads.
Ashley: Exactly, so rather
than just thinking of what speed
they should be travelling at,
people should really consider the
conditions of the roads while they
are driving.
Jessica: i like what you said
about the weather. Even when
driving in the city, as soon as
the day changes from a bright
day to having rain, the traffic
becomes quite chaotic. but
when people are driving long
distance, all they focus on
is getting to the destination
as soon as possible instead
of considering the road

conditions. I find it
very
intimidating
when people follow
very close to my
car. its almost like
telling me to drive
faster.

that you can stretch your legs,

have something to eat and switch
drivers if possible

Ashley:
Drivers
need to understand
that in dry conditions
there is a two second
following rule but in wet
conditions, its a four
second rule. If another
vehicle is following you
too closely, rather than speeding
up, move to the left if its safe to
do so and let the vehicle pass.

Ashley: We want drivers to

drive to the speed limit, if the
conditions allow. Say for example
you are driving along a road with
a 100kmh speed limit, its raining,
the traffic has slowed down
to about 90kmh. You become
impatient and decide to overtake
the cars in front of you, speeding
up to 102-103kms. While you are
only exceeding the speed limit
by 2-3kmh, 102km at an impact
is a huge speed. A Police Officer
using his or her discretion may
give you a fine because he/she
has noted that your speed is too
fast for the conditions and you are
endangering other road users.

Jessica: What are the best

practices when driving long
distances?
Ashley: All drivers should
check their cars properly before
they start their journey. Ensure
your vehicle is road worthy by
doing a TWIRL.
} T - Tyres
} W Windscreen, wipers &
mirrors
} I - Indicators
} R - Rust
} L- Lights
This is not difficult and can be
done by just walking around the
car, making sure that they are
checked and in good conditions.
Instead of focusing on reaching
the destination, take a break so

Jessica: So for Queens

birthday weekend, what is
the speed tolerance?

Jessica: now i understand

why some people were
confused that they were given
fines for driving just 2 or 3
km above the speed limit. i
can see that not driving above
the speed limit and according
to road conditions must go
hand in hand together. Do
you think people are thinking
that, if there is a crash,
airbags in the cars are going
to protect them?
Ashley: This is simply the Law

of Physics. People can go on You

Tube and watch vehicles being
crash tested.
Airbags working together
with safety belts help reduce the
impact on our bodies when we
are in a car crash. Airbags and
seatbelts are only effective at
lower speeds. At higher speeds,
even with both working, we can
still be seriously injured or killed.
At crashes we attend we
see that, out of all the vehicle
occupants involved, those who
are not wearing seatbelts are the
most harmed.
Jessica: What have you
got to say to people who are
impatient and want to reach
their destination quickly?
Ashley: What people will find
is that they can speed up only to
find that at some point, they will
still have to be in a queue because
that is how the traffic is flowing.
Slowing down may take you a
bit longer, but life is worth more
than all the time in the world and
I strongly encourage people to be
patient and considerate on the
roads.
Jessica : Thank you Acting
Senior Sgt gOrE, i hope that
people will take care to abide
by the road rules and i wish to
take this opportunity to wish
all Asian communities a very
enjoyable and safe Queens
birthday weekend.

Anything but funny

On completing six years, the team at Indian Weekender decided to brainstorm

on the idea of a quest. We agree that a quest has a clear goal and a specific
end point. You can clearly explain a quest in a sentence or two. Every quest
has a beginning, and sooner or later, every quest will come to an end.
A quest presents a clear challenge.
A quest requires sacrifice of some kind.
A quest is often driven by a calling or sense of mission.
A quest requires a series of small steps and incremental progress toward the
goal.
To sum it up, a quest is a journey toward something specific, with a number of
challenges throughout. Most quests also require a series of logical steps and some
kind of personal growth. ~ Chris Guillebeau from The Happiness of Pursuit
These lines define the entire journey of the Indian Weekender. It has been
nothing but a quest. We had our eyes fixed on our goal and were willing to give it our
best. Today we can boast of being the first ever weekly news magazine serving the
community. Our growing popularity is clear from our reach and engagement with
our readers and advertisers. Also our presence online and on social media grows
every day.
It was six years ago but it seems just like yesterday when my co-director and I
stood on either side of a street in Central Auckland and handed out the first edition
of our paper to passersby who looked at us strangely. The global recession was at its
peak and most people believed that we would not make it. But here we are six years
later. Looking at the way our readership and popularity has grown over the years
makes it all worth it.
We have our supporters, advertisers and readers to thank for at every stage of
our journey. Our highest highs, our lowest lows, our brightest hours and our darkest
moments all become worth it when we receive reviews and responses from our
readers and see the support that our hard work has garnered over the years. This has
also been a time of personal growth for the team, who have learnt and continue to
do so every day. Even though sometimes the lessons are not very easy, our resilience
keeps us going. We believe that if we fall down nine times well get back up on ten.
I sign off every issue by sharing some words of wisdom that I have learnt over the
years. However in this special issue, with my palms pressed together, I just want to
thank you. If you are reading this piece, thank you for your support, now and over
the years. Please keep this support going and we promise to serve the community
better every day.
I hope you enjoy reading our bumper edition as much as we have enjoyed putting
it together for you. This is also our Hall of Fame special edition and we will bring you
the details of the event in our next issue. Heres to six more glorious years serving
the community and many more.

by emergency services.

Tips from the Trenches

Sharp dressed young men
Have at least one good suit in the closet
No matter what your job is, youre going to need a
decent suit at some point.
If youre in a field where youre going to wear one
regularly you should look for a variety of colors and
styles; if you just need a single suit for infrequent dress
occasions stick with a classic single-breasted, twobutton suit in charcoal gray or navy blue.
If youre buying off the rack take the time to have the suit
adjusted.
A few department stores still offer the service, but youll
more than likely need to find a tailor independently.
Its worth the effort sized suits are made to general
measurements, and not all of them are going to be a
perfect fit for you. A good tailor can make the small
changes that take your suit from looking mediocre to
perfect for you.

iWK The Wheel OF ChAnGe

he IWK wheel has been chugging along for six long years now. In its wake, it has left behind a series of changes that are unprecedented in the
history of New Zealand the foremost being the launch of the first-ever Kiwi-Indian weekly news magazine. This was made possible not by any
one person, but a team of dedicated and hard-working professionals. Meet the IWK dream team:

Giri Gupta, Managing editor and Co-Publisher

e is the hub of the IWK wheel; the main crux on which the wheel rests and leverages all the other parts. If not for his labour of six long
years, IWK would not have been where it is today. The diminutive septuagenarian with his unending supply of energy puts a 17-year-old
to shame. At the same time, he is one person who genuinely cares for the well-being of each of his team members.
Mr Guptas dreams show the team the way to newer heights. His positive never say die attitude along with his business prowess eggs the team
to scale unknown terrains, which invariably lead to newer feathers on IWKs cap. Right from the launch of the fortnightly newspaper six years ago,
to becoming a weekly news magazine late last year, each spin of the IWK wheel has been earmarked by Mr Guptas undaunted efforts. With no
financial returns on his efforts our heart goes out to the relentless energy he invests in his passion.

Bhav Dhillon, Co-Publisher

e can describe him as the hub band - the crucial component that supports the hub and also maintains the other parts of the IWK
wheel. The team rises from peak to peak thanks to Bhavs invaluable feedback on IWKs performance. This feedback, which often
verges on criticism, takes the IWK wheel galloping to shores seldom sighted before.
As suave in person as the words spoken, Bhavs enterprising acumen is legendary. The passion with which he built his own business is, at times,
transferred to IWK. Bhav feels it is his ultimate social responsibility to give back to the community without any commercial returns. That explains
his interest and involvement with the news magazine, as a bridge that connects idealism with reality.

Annu Sharma, Editor

ou cannot miss her in a crowd. She stands out - not just for her towering personality but also for the tastefully handpicked baubles that
adorn her. The cherry on top is her bright red crown. She speaks sparingly; she is more of a silent observer. But when she does, her words
are carefully chosen and immaculately strung together just like that ornate necklace round her neck. She pens her words likewise. Annu
leads from the fore, leaving no room for any illusion. But her biggest weakness: she finds it difficult to let go. So it is best to latch on to Annu,
because she will pull you through even if you are left dangling from the last straw. Thats the team-binder for the IWK wheel. Annu pushes the team
further and beyond to scale new heights and never give up.

Rohan

e is the invisible cog in the IWK wheel. We seldom see him around. But his presence is felt each week as we publish IWK online. Our
virtual presence is planned, designed and hosted by Rohan. Shall we call him the rim of the IWK wheel, the outer band that supports the
spokes?
However, IWKs virtual presence is 100 times more visible in the web-world than Rohan is in the real world. We could do with seeing the man a
wee bit more often, but here we are talking about an entrepreneur on a mission.
Paula Ray, Associate Editor

S
Paula

he loves to dissect and prides herself for being analytical. This passion is well utilised in the opinionated articles she writes for IWK. Her
pet peeve is her column on raising a voice against everyday issues that bother us something she has researched on extensively during her
comeback to academics.
With her dark humour, and her cracks and digs, Paula often finds herself in hot waters, but almost always manages to swim through. If you
need a good brainstorm, till the cows come home, theres always Paula. Make no mistake though, through all this she is also the sounding board
for the team. You can always rely on her for a different perspective.

Swati Sharma, Chief Reporter

H
Swati

er dark, huge, almond eyes stand out in her petite frame on stilettos. Swati is part of the furniture at IWK. If the IWK office is open, there
would seldom be a day when she isnt sitting at her desk liaising with (read: chasing) the reporters or designers towards their deadlines.
If she isnt murmuring into her mobile phone, she will be screaming her lungs out to ensure the IWK wheel keeps rolling at its designated
pace. She has learned the ropes of media production well and handles her duties responsibly. Of course, this is if she isnt busy re-touching her bright red lip
colour and clicking selfies on her laptop camera. Thats all good. We just hope Swati enjoyed the same food as the rest of us, especially dishes that are cooked
with onion and garlic.

Rizwan Mohammad, Reporter

e is the new kid on the block. Dripping with enthusiasm and energy, he is most mobile when on his scooty. His can do attitude has
made him the teams favourite. He holds forth the torch of multiculturalism and secularism that IWK represents through the wide
range of articles he is assigned to report on. That apart, Rizwan has his fingers in all pies be it reporting, distribution, lead generation or
networking. A dreamer at heart, Rizwan entertains the team with his ingenious personal anecdotes and jest-induced witty comebacks. But he also
makes sure to quickly step aside after such a rejoinder.

Rizwan

Esha Chanda, Reporter

ne of the newest members of the team, Esha isnt seen as often at the IWK office. Her presence is felt mainly via her bylines. A person of
many interests, she finds solace in the written word. Pen and paper are her priority. She is dedicated to her deadlines and ensures the latest
news make it to the weekly.

Esha

Mahesh Kumar, Art & Layout Designer

Mahesh Ji

here do we begin with this man? He attempts to oil almost every spoke of the IWK wheel -from marketing the weekly, designing
layouts, doing the artwork for advertisers to distributing the final product to select outlets around Auckland. The credit for giving IWK
its new sassy look would undoubtedly go to Mahesh. Every week he works his graphic magic, polishing the pages tastefully, until the
entire newspaper glitters. The IWK team can tell you more about this man who loves to play mysterious. Maheshs enigma lies in his silence. Oft we
need to pump his guts to make him speak. And when he does oblige, his sarcasm scathes us. If his words dont leave you injured, his wicked smile
and the crinkle of his eyes will definitely kill you.
Yashmin Chand, Graphic Designer

er flair shines on her face. The hoops on her ears, the slant of her eye-liner, her impeccable clothes, the fancy heels and the deftly-chosen
accessories all speak volumes of her commitment to perfection. You are sure to spot some of this flawlessness on the pages of IWK.
Often we dont realise Yashmin is in the office, she is so silent. But then we spot her head-down in front of the iMac monitor designing
content on the pages. Apart from her fastidiousness with food, we love the fancy frills and Fiji-freshness she brings to IWK.

Yashmin

Leena Pal, Sales & Marketing Manager

f there is one person we hear even before stepping into the office space, that is Leena. Its because she is busy doing what she does best: selling
ad spaces for the weekly, when she isnt marketing IWK to Kiwis and Kiwi-Indians to identify potential leads to generate revenue. Lets name
her the oil that lubricates the IWK wheel.
She is known to melt even the toughest of rocks with her sales pitch. Her senior colleagues can vouch for it. So beware of her swish demeanour
when she flashes that dazzling smile. You might end up selling your soul even before you realise it.

Leena

Farah Khan, Accounts and Admin Manager

ont get taken in by her super glossy tresses or her sultry appeal. She is as perceptive as a mum of a toddler should be. We enjoy her fond
conversations about her absolutely adorable girls as much as she does narrating them. Quite unlike her name, Farah (read: Far-ah!) is
never far when we need her. She is one of those silent and dependable cogs that keep the IWK wheel rolling. Yes, she is not only adept at
number crunching but also excels at balancing sheets. We remember her at least once every fortnight.

With their roots in a most conservative
rural region of North India (Haryana

to strong preference for sons and
consequent alarming rate of female

Adventurers Grand Slam.
They have been made the brand

abroad such as US, Brazil, Nepal and Chile.
They have also delivered TEDx talk in New
Delhi.
NungshiTashi have impressive academic
record. Apart from a bachelors degree
in journalism and mass communication,
they have 17 credit points for Masters
in peacebuilding from, School of
International training, Vermont, USA.
Apart from their interest in Peaceful
Conflict Transformation, the twins have
strong social activist orientation, especially
on gender issues. To continue to promote
gender equality in India, the Everest
twins as they are popularly known, have
started NungshiTashi Foundation.
They plan to continue higher studies
in sport and exercise up to doctoral
level and pursue career in sports and
outdoors. Among their strategic goals is
the establishment of world class centre
of excellence in mountaineering in India.
The twin sisters are passionate about
dance and wish to devote substantial part
of their leisure time in learning various
forms of dance.
They see mountaineering as a journey into
self discovery and their favorite quote
remains Edmund Hillarys famous we
dont conquer mountains but ourselves.

Congratulations to the Indian Weekender for six very successful years of

publication and running three successful Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame annual
awards.
The Indian community is a vital part of our multicultural nation. The Indian
Weekender does an excellent job as a voice for your community and ensuring
the stories of your people are told.
Community media outlets such as the Indian Weekender play an important role
in keeping people up-to-date with what is happening in their communities.
Having done a number of interviews with your publication myself, Ive seen
first-hand the great work you do.
I also want to acknowledge all the effort and organisation that has gone into
running three annual editions of the Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame competition.
The award which recognises outstanding contributions not only to the
Indian community but to New Zealands wider progress is an opportunity to
acknowledge people who might otherwise be overlooked.
I want to see a New Zealand where we celebrate success and where everyone
who works for it gets to share in the rewards. I am encouraged by your efforts to
acknowledge the Kiwis who are contributing to our success as a country.
Congratulations again on all you have achieved and I look forward to working

On its sixth anniversary, I am delighted to congratulate the Indian

Weekender for the service it has provided to the Indian community in New
Zealand both through its publication and in organising events such as the
Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame.
The Indian community benefits greatly from having specialist publications
which cater for its needs and interests.
Indian Weekender does that. It informs, it educates and it entertains the
Kiwi Indian community. It promotes Indian culture and business and
allows the community to hear the perspectives of people in India and
Indian diaspora communities living in Fiji and here in New Zealand.
The Indian community has made a great contribution to New Zealand. It is
important to maintain and promote Indian culture, languages and its rich
heritage. Indian Weekender helps ensure that this happens.
It has been a privilege and a pleasure to be a regular contributor to the
Indian Weekender in recent years. I thank the team for the opportunity and
look forward to our continuing cooperation and the work we do together.

Congratulations to the editors and staff at Indian Weekender,

now leading the newspaper into its seventh year.
Thats an outstanding achievement in any era, but never more so than now,
with the rise of online publishing and more competition than ever before.
Well done on six strong years.
No newspaper survives these days without bold leadership and a willingness
to stay at the very top of their game.
Thats why it was exciting to see Indian Weekenders recent growth from a
fortnightly to a weekly, doubling its output to become New Zealands only
weekly Indian newspaper.
And as more people move online to get their news, Indian Weekender has
kept pace with a modern website and distinctive voice on social media.
As the MP for Mt Albert, I have had a long association with Indian
Weekender, and appreciate its role as an important link with the Kiwi Indian
community.
My electorate has one of the highest concentrations of Indian New
Zealanders anywhere in New Zealand. They have supported me loyally
over the years, and my family and I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of
community events.
I hope the newspaper continues to flourish and provide the important news
source it does for Indian New Zealanders and also for me. The one thing
that never changes in the media is the importance of quality content.
Its great too, to see the return of the Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame, this year
with the new Unsung Hero and Young Achiever awards. As always, the
newspaper continues to innovate.
After years of association, I see Indian Weekender reflecting a smart,
modern Indian New Zealand community thats business-savvy and fully
engaged both locally and internationally.
May you continue to thrive as a celebration of our shared South Asian
identity, and an intelligent news source.

A very hearty congratulations to the management and staff at Indian

Weekender for achieving yet another milestone.
The Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame is a true reflection of Indians who have
achieved and contributed immensely to the economy, culture and
betterment of New Zealand.
May you thrive and recognize the true spirit of Indian Kiwis for years
to come.
I feel very privileged in this respect to congratulate the talent and
contribution of fellow kiwis and the hard work of the Indian Weekender
team to recognize them.
All the very best.

Harish Lodhia JP
Honorary Consul for the Republic of Fiji

David Shearer, MP
Labour Party

I congratulate the Indian Weekender on their six years of excellent

news coverage and information that they provide to our vibrant and
growing Kiwi Indian community. In addition to this, I congratulate the
Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame for their three year anniversary.
I hope you take the time to celebrate this achievement and I look
forward to the next six years, which I hope to be celebrating with you
then.
It has been great to have a forum where we can celebrate the
achievements and contributions the Indian community makes to our
communities and celebrate the diversity that exists in New Zealand.
The celebration and recognition of our Kiwi Indians is vital as New
Zealands ethnic communities are becoming more established each
year, with one in four New Zealanders being born overseas who also call
Auckland home, a place where diversity is celebrated and embraced.
Its also why thousands of people each year come here on holiday, to
set up businesses and to raise their families.
I encourage you all to continue to support and participate in the

the publishers - Mr Giri Gupta QSM and Mr Bhav Dhillon can look
back with pride at the success which their determined efforts have
brought to what is now the pre-eminent publication of Indian news in
the community. They have earned a respected place in the publishing
industry. That outcome reflects the contribution of a staff team which
has been committed to the pursuit of excellence in conveying news and
commentary of interest to a substantially growing readership.
When the newspaper was launched the publishers made it clear
that the paper would focus on the positive aspects of the life in our
communities. It has admirably succeeded in that regarding with a wide
ranging selection of material from community activity to the delights of
Bollywood and its stars.
Much is happening in the wider Indian community the 2014
New Zealand election saw two first rate Indian candidates enter the
New Zealand Parliament, the Kiwi-Indian Hall of Fame has been well
received and the India Trade Alliance is in the process of being set up
with offices in Mumbai and Auckland to facilitate trade between the two
countries and consequential significant benefits for its members
In India itself the BJP had a stunning victory in the 2014 Congressional
elections capturing 282 seats and expectations are high that Prime
Minister Narendra Modi has the knowledge and skill to effect major
changes to the economy and the Indian society for the benefit of all
Indian Weekender has reported these events and their implications
accurately with its customary flair.
The paper continues to be an exemplar of all that is good in the
media community

the list for serving the community with great services.
We wish Indian Weekender all the success for many
more years to come.
NZ Fashion Tech extends warm congratulations to the
Indian Weekender on completing six successful years.
NZ Fashion Tech has been a leader in Fashion Education
since 1995. As an award winning Education Provider we
believe in taking our students passions and interests
and teaming them up with the right technical skills for a
successful career in the Fashion Industry.
For many years NZ Fashion Tech has exclusively partnered with
leading NZ brands. The most recent collaboration was with Resene
and Bannari Amman Institute of Technology in Tamil Nadu,
southern India.

Whether you are new to New Zealand or already settled

here, BNZ Migrant & Asian banking Indian team can
provide you with a complete banking service.
A partnership you can trust.
Our Indian speaking managers live and work locally
so have a thorough understanding of the local market
conditions and we are available seven days a week to
come and see you, at your convenience.

In a first for fashion education, silk saris were transformed into

high fashion designs. Ten garments opened five Resene Designer
Selection Shows at New Zealand Fashion Week. Nine looks were
showcased in the fashion industry magazine, Apparel, and six
looks were featured in the Next magazine. The results exceeded
everyones expectations.
We were then granted the Prime Ministers Scholarship for Asia and
15 extremely lucky students spent five weeks travelling India learning
about fabrics and textiles, seeing where cotton originates from and
how its transformed into fabric.
This year we are excited to be teaming up with the leader in fashion
paint colours again. Our current Diploma in Fashion Technology
students have embarked on the Resene NZ Fashion Tech Colour
of Fashion project using the lustrous colours of hand-woven silk saris
from India and Resene Fashion Colours. Anticipation is in the air!

Jadoo TV launches Jadoo 4

An improved Android-Based streaming box with live & on-demand content, and third-party apps via Google Play
SWATI SHARMA

n their seventh anniversary, Jadoo

TV added another feather to their
hat, by launching Jadoo 4.

JadooTV, the Intel Capital backed video

streaming services and Technologies Company,
launched its fourth generation Android-based settop box with an improved quick-response user
interface, faster processing speed, higher streaming
quality, and enhanced App offerings via Google
Play App Store.
The CEO Mr Sajid Sohail visited Auckland
recently for product introduction and promotion of
this fourth generation product in New Zealand.
It is a huge step forwards. Basically every two
years or so, we come out with next generation of
products. So our first one we announced in 2008
and now we have announced this fourth generation
product in the beginning of 2015, said Mr Sohail.
Jadoo4 is completely redesigned offering a
single page easy to navigate home menu. The
new design allows users easy access to Live &
On-Demand content, Device Settings, Favorites,
myJadoo and Applications all on a single home
page. The new navigation layout combined with
a faster native android user interface creates a
superior user experience and is a vast improvement
from the previous generation of JadooTV.
Jadoo4 is designed to bridge the generational
gap offering entertainment content for the entire
family. The device offers more entertainment and
app content to engage parents and kids. Users
can access over 400 live channels & thousands

distributor Manoj Chauhan

of hours of On-Demand content from, Pakistan,

Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Afghanistan, India

and the Middle East.

In addition, Jadoo4 comes with the Google Play

Store so users can play more, do more, and watch

more. With thousands of apps to choose from, users
can find the right app when they need it, right on
the Play Store. Enjoy movies, sports, music, social
media, communications, and educational apps;
from Netflix, HBOGO, EROS NOW, XBMC,
Watch ESPN, Pandora, Saavn, theres something
for everyone.
Features
} Latest technology with an all new user
interface.
} Fast channel load and switch time.
} Look up channels by number.
} Mark your favourite content to add to your
line-up.
} Instant access to last 10 channels played.
} Single click channel recall functionality.
} myJadoo Users can add and share live
content.
Jaddo TV was launched in 2008 by joint
efforts of Mr. Sajid Sohail and his wife Sadia
Sohail, focusing on the elderly in the family.
They are the one who are little connected to their
language and culture and have time. When we
started this thing, it kind of changed the whole way
the immigrants lived in other parts of the world.
Before, they had much time and didnt know
what to do. Services like Jadoo TV have helped our
parents tremendously in passing their time.
Other big achievement that we were able to
make, was to connect our younger generation to
their language and culture, said Mr Sohail.

My heartiest congratulations to IWK on its 6th anniversary. It is fascinating to see the type of work IWK has been
doing all these 6 years. IWK is such an organisation to which you connect easily; there is a sheer feeling of warmth and
happiness within IWK. Recently the stories IWK did on the experiences of Indian students gained a lot of popularity
in New Zealand. I have loved being a part of IWKs stories and it would be my pleasure to continue to be a part of
their upcoming programs.I wishes the entire team of IWK all my best for their future. Keep up the good work guys and
congratulations once again. Cheers!!

Its a great achievement for Indian Weekender to have gone from fortnightly to weekly in such short span of time.
I see a variety of news from India, Fiji, New Zealand and Indians abroad; it feels good to see the Indian newspaper
going such great work for the community. I would especially like to mention about India-Modi-Fied section of the
newspaper, noting what is happening under the Modi government back in India connects us regularly and updates us the
developments happening back there.
The look of the paper is very appealing as compared to other community newspapers. I read the paper regularly and
I think the paper is more multicultural than just Indian which is commendable in its own way. I would applaud the
dedication of the editor and the MD of the newspaper for taking such brave steps ahead and I see a great scope for the
newspaper, to take a leap from regional to a national level Indian community newspaper.
Kudos Indian Weekender for achieving this milestone and congratulations once again on your 6th anniversary.

In the first eight months of 2014 about 15,640 Indian students were
studying in New Zealand, a 60 percent increase over the same period
in 2013. The government estimates the students would have spent
approximately $433 million on fees and living costs, and that figure looks
set to grow even further this year. Seventy percent of Indian students
are enrolled with private tertiary institutions and about 20 percent with
polytechnics.

A photo of Singh riding a bus in Christchurch

went viral after it was uploaded on Facebook in January, with
accompanying message accusing him of molesting someone, not
once but twice... Rajwinder Singh, the Indian student wrongly
accused online of sexual abuse, has been awaiting justice after
receiving death threats, and is now too scared to even step outside
his home.

Indians are the second largest migrant community in New

Zealand. It will work in favour of the government to develop a relationship
with Kiwi-Indians... What helps is that the current government in India is
extremely trade-friendly. Working towards a Free Trade Agreement with
the Indian government will be promising.... Its unfortunate that Modi will
be in Australia in a few days time, followed by a trip to Fiji, bypassing New
Zealand on his way. It is an opportunity lost.

31 october, 2014 : The rise of Rocket Singh

A string of recent movies starting with the ground

breaking Singh is King closely followed by Love Aaj-Kal and then
Rocket Singh appear to have set a new trend. To add the dash of
increased masculinity, passion, energy, enthusiasm, righteousness,
and courage, our heroes frequently adorn the Singh Avatar now.
