2. EU TRADE KEY FINDINGS

The European Union is a net exporter of pork. In physical terms, exports consistently
exceeded imports from 2007 to 2013. However, the difference in trade balance was less
notable in value terms due to high import prices.
The EU pork market showed steady growth, rising from 17.6 million tonnes in 2007 to
21.2 million tonnes in 2013. From 2007 to 2013, it expanded with a CAGR of 3.1%. In
value terms it also illustrated an increase, reaching 60.2 billion EUR in 2013.
Pork production showed similar dynamics over the last few years. From 2007 to 2013, it
expanded to 22.8 million tonnes. In value terms it reached 43.9 billion EUR. Production
dynamics reflect general dynamics of market development. Being a net exporter of pork,
the EU completely covers its internal demand.
EU growth in pork consumption is expected to slow to 2.8% (currently +5.2%), amidst
sluggish domestic demand. In the past, pork consumption was fueled by rising
purchasing power, but this engine of growth is now under pressure from the current
economic slowdown. Moreover, high prices for feed, logistics and labor resources will also
slow down a pace of growth in the medium term. Structural changes in meat demand are
expected, especially in the poultry sector that will experience the highest growth rates.
The countries with the highest levels of pork production in 2013 were Germany (6.4
million tonnes), Spain (4.2 million tonnes), Italy (2.2 million tonnes), together
accounting for 56% of total output. In France, production declined by 1.2% annually
from 2007 to 2013. The remaining countries showed slight growth in physical terms:
Germany (+5.5%), Spain (+3.1%) and Italy (+1.4%).
Chile and the USA were the main suppliers of pork into the EU, with a combined share of
63% of total imports in 2013. However, the fastest growing suppliers from 2007 to 2013
were Japan (+40.2% per year) and Switzerland (+36.9% per year). Norway significantly
strengthened its position in the European imports structure, from 3% in 2007 to 11% in
2013.
In 2013, Russia (23.1%), China (19.0%), Japan (14.6%) and the Republic of Korea
(6.2%) were the leading destinations of EU exports, together making up 62.9% of total
exports in physical terms. While the share of the Russian Federation increased, the share
of the Republic of Korea illustrated negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries
remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
Germany dominated in EU pork production and trade. In 2013, Germany exported 27.1%
of its total pork output. Of this amount, 19% was supplied to Italy, where German pork
held 10.6% share of total Italys consumption.
