OneSubsea MARS

Multiple Application Reinjection System

Enabling processes for every well

unique technology. universal application.

Historically, installing processing hardware on

existing subsea trees has been a high-risk and costly
activity due to potential required field shutdown, new
hardware foundation, and pipeline decommissioning or
recommissioning.
The OneSubsea MARS Multiple Application
Reinjection System serves as a universal interface for trees
(topside and subsea), enabling processing equipment to
be installed between the existing isolation barriers, thus
eliminating the need for high-risk and costly intervention
to the field architecture. The MARS system enables
flexibility and choice for production optimization in new
and existing fields, providing:
Low-cost intervention
Low-risk intervention
Cost-effective wellhead processing
MARS technology can be used for both vertical and
horizontal Christmas trees in surface and subsea
applications. The system has been adopted by operators
in various regions of the world for multiple applications,
including a pump system installation in the Gulf of
Mexico and well stimulation systems in the North Sea
and West Africa.

MARS-Enabled Possibilities
MARS technology enables multiple processing
possibilities on new and existing wells at any time
in the life of a field. The MARS system establishes
the wellhead as the unit of production, enabling
the connection of production optimization
systems to be installed easily in the field, either on
or off the subsea tree.
The system enables any process on any well;
therefore any number of existing or emerging
processing technologies can be fitted into a field
with minimal risk.
Applications include:

Multiphase pumping
Multiphase metering
Fluid sampling
Separation
Bulk water management and reinjection
Raw seawater injection
Pressure boosting
Chemical injection
HIPPS
Well Kill

the MARS system in the field

Gulf of Mexico
In 2007, the first subsea multiphase pump was
installed in the Gulf of Mexico in 5430 ft (1700 m)
water depth. Using two MARS inserts to gain access
to the production flow allowed the pumps to increase
production from mature assets by 20% and is expected
to extend field life by five years. In addition, the
MARS system eliminated the installation risk normally
associated with implementing new deepwater processing
technology on brownfield assets.

West Africa
The system increased production from a field offshore
Angola through scale-squeeze operations on 14 wells.
Equipment for this project included 16 chokes modified
with MARS technology, two off short-term injection
inserts and two off injection skids. The deployment
system used two off reelers complete with 2 x 2461
ft (750 m)-long hoses, a 1/2 reeler complete with a
1/2 x 2461 ft (750 m)-long hose, a 30-ton deployment
winch, an overboarding chute complete with clamping
station, a hydraulic power unit and an associated remote
control station. The full scope of the project included
chemical delivery and deck handling packages, making
the operation safer, faster and more cost-efficient. Scalesqueeze operations have been ongoing on a regular basis
since installation.
Following the successful application of MARS
technology offshore Angola, similar MARS technology
for multiphase metering was applied throughout a
field offshore Nigeria in 2953 ft (900 m) water depth
at pressures up to 5000 psi and temperatures between
-0.4 F and 216 F (-18 C and 102 C). A total of 24
dedicated flowbase manifolds have been supplied, which
house the retrievable MARS-enabled multiphase
flow meters.

North Sea
MARS technology was used on a field in the West of
Shetlands to reinstate critical production management
instrumentation that had failed in situ. Working with
the original tree manufacturer, replacement
instrumentation was introduced into a MARS-enabled
flow loop at the tree which restored full functionality to
the production system.
Here, the MARS system was the solution for retrofitting
pressure sensors and isolation valves on an existing
horizontal tree using the existing subsea control
system while retaining full choke functionality. Rapid
installation and redeployment was possible using an
ROV support vessel.
Also in the North Sea, two fields incorporated MARSenabled subsea well stimulation packages. Prior to
adopting MARS technology at the first field, subsea
scale-squeeze operations at that location were diver
intensive, infrequent and expensive. By upgrading the
existing subsea trees (two in situ and one new tree predeployment) with a MARS-enabled choke, the operator
effectively gained a new safe-access point into both their
reservoir and the pipeline system.
At this field, MARS technology resulted in a safer, faster
and more cost-efficient operation since it was installed
on both new and existing trees. This application reduced

well risk, enabled multiple-well concurrent campaigns,

reduced vessel time and costs, reduced shutdown time
and increased the weather window. In addition, divers
no longer were required to perform work in hazardous
environments. MARS technology yielded an estimated
60% reduction in OPEX.
Following this success, the operator specified that the
same technology be used at a second field. Here, the
scope of supply included one off injection skid assembly,
four off choke change-out interface extension sets, one
off choke change-out extension running tool, four off
choke protection plates, operational tooling and project
and services testing. Production has been optimized due
to safer, faster and less-expensive (and therefore more
frequent) scale-squeeze operations.
A MARS-enabled multiphase flow meter was used via
the tree cap at another field in the North Sea. A single
assembly consisting of a MARS system and the flow
meter was deployed by a wireline crew. Normal hot
work permits no longer were required as no flowlines
or existing infrastructure were modified. In addition,
the system provided a low-risk, low-cost method to
retrofit flow meters to every platform wellhead,
enabling production optimization from improved
data management.
