Scenic Bi-way project, a joint project of the following six towns: Olive, Shandaken, Fleischmanns,
Margaretville and Andes. Each community will
have one event marketing to showcase. FF is considering the Memorial Day event in this regard.

The next meeting of Fleischmanns First will be March

Maple Fest
2015
The Fleischmanns
First Maple Festival now in its
fourth year is adding a new dimension to the activities. In addition to holding all of the events,
the Maple Pancake Breakfast, Maple Bake Off Cafe and
Crowning of Maple Court, on one day, Saturday, March 21,
Fleischmanns First will host a 5K run/walk starting from our
very own Maple Syrup Farm in Halcott Center, Vly Creek
Maple Farm, to the Gazebo on Main Street. Sponsored by
Fleischmanns First, the Sap House 5K will benefit Summer
Programming at Skene Memorial Library. Registration is
required for participation in the race. Shuttle vehicles will
transport racers from Fleischmanns parking lot at 8:45 to Vly
Creek Farms. Racers will be able to tour the active sugar
shack at the farm before crossing the starting line. The registration form is available on Fleischmanns First Facebook
page.
The Maple Pancake Breakfast sponsored by the Fleischmanns Community Church will begin at 8:00am and serve
until noon. A full breakfast including pancakes and local maple syrup, of course, bacon, sausage, fruit, juice and coffee
and tea will be offered. Proceeds will benefit the Church.
Tickets, $7 for adults, $5 for children, 3-12, will be available
at the door.
The Maple Bake Off Cafe returns to Fleischmanns at 1pm on
March 21st. Bakers are encouraged to register and make a
cake in one of three categories, traditional, Gluten Free and
Intergenerational. Maple syrup or maple sugar must be a
meaningful ingredient of the confection. The Maple Bake
Off Cafe will take place at La Cabana. Maple inspired lunch
will be available from Ate O Ate and La Cabana. This event
is a Fleischmanns First fundraiser; proceeds support our programs for the community. Coffee, tea, punch beverages and
maple cookies are covered by the $15 entrance fee. The
Fleischmann/Pine Hill Rotary will again feature maple walnut ice cream. And, of course, the cake auction will follow
the judging. This year, future bidders will have the opportunity to taste before purchase.
Last but not least at 3:30 the Maple Court will be crowned!

Making a Living in Fleischmanns...

Even before European settlers came to the Catskills, Native Americans had discovered the sweet properties of maple sap. Early settlers often had this as their only sweetening option, as sugar from sugar cane was not available, or was way too expensive. Most families tapped a few trees for themselves, but there were some larger commercial operations, even 100 years ago. These two post cards,
dating from around 1910, provide a glimpse at the way maple sugaring was done then. Today it is still a vital facet of Catskills living. Although sap buckets are used today, larger operations, have replaced individual sap buckets with plastic tubing connecting
many trees. And new this year, there is a 'universal' system of grading the syrup. But even today many folks still tap trees the oldfashioned way, and boil down the 40 gallons of sap it takes to make one gallon of syrup.
Enjoy your pancakes!

Letter from Mayor Pascarella..

Dear Fleischmanns Community,
2015 will be a turning point year for this Village. That is what I am thinking to myself while looking out
the window at 30 degree below zero wind-chilled whirling snow. With all of the current buzz around the
country about the Catskills being the up and coming travel destination of choice, it is time to seize the
moment. This is the year we will finally, finally finish all of the FEMA reimbursed reconstruction projects from the flood of 2011. We will also see significant restoration work take place on the theater
building. We will also continue to see new businesses opening their doors on Main St. We will also see
a new round of grant funded beautification projects taking place around the Village to help further lift
the profile of Fleischmanns.

Of course, none of this will be possible without the continued hard work of all those whose constant
efforts behind and in front of the scenes get the jobs done. I give great thanks to all of you who have
worked and who are working to improve Fleischmanns and our surrounding community. I also ask that
we rededicate ourselves, this year, to our shared purpose of continued progress in our Village so we can
build on the results so far achieved. I ask that we take full ownership of our future. There is much to be
gained in this year of opportunity, but without persistence much progress could be lost.
Keep up the good work, and stay positive.
Now, back I go to shoveling.
Sincerely,
Todd Pascarella, Mayor
