Introduction
Thisdocumentprovidesstandardbreakkeysequencecombinationsforthemostcommonoperating
systems,andsometipsonhowtotroubleshootproblems.
TheElectronicIndustriesAssociation RS232logicleveluses+3to+25voltstosignifyaSpace(Logic0)
and3to25voltsforaMark(logic1).Abreaksignaliswhenthedatalineremainsinthespaceconditionfor
aspecifiedduration,usually100mstosecond.Allcharactersbeginwithastartbitandendwithastopbit
(andalsoaparitybitortwo).Thelevelconditionofthestartandstopbitsisalwaysopposite.So,nocharacter
combinationcanlooklikethebreaksignal.AbreaksignalenablesyoutoaccessaROMMonitoronCisco
IOSdeviceswhenapasswordrecoveryisnecessary.

Problemsthatyouencounterduringpasswordrecoveryoftenoccurbecauseyouarenotsureabout
whatthebreakkeysequenceisforthe(nonCisco)softwareyouuse.Forsoftwarenotlistedinthe
table,andforadditionalinformation,refertothedocumentationoftheindividualsoftwarepackages.
Theauxiliary(AUX)portisnotactiveduringthebootsequenceofarouter.Therefore,itisnouseif
yousendabreakthroughtheAUXport.Youneedtohaveconnectiontotheconsoleport,andhave
thesesettings:
9600baudrate
Noparity
8databits
1stopbit
Noflowcontrol
SomeversionsofWindowsNThavehyperterminalsoftwarethatcannotsendthecorrectbreakkey
signal.Refertohttp://www.hilgraeve.com/hyperterminal.html formoreinformationandforan
upgradeofthehyperterminalsoftware.
Insomecases,thebreaksequencemightnotgettransmittedproperlywhenusingaUSB/Serial
convertercable.Insuchcases,useakeyboardwithadifferentconnectorport(forexample,aPS/2).

HowtoSimulateaBreakKeySequence
Breakkeysequencesimulationisusefulifyourterminalemulatordoesnotsupportthebreakkey,orifabug
doesnotallowyourterminalemulatortosendthecorrectsignal.
Note:ThehyperterminalunderWindowsNThadthisbehaviorinthepast.
Completethesestepstosimulateabreakkeysequence:
1. Connecttotherouterwiththeseterminalsettings:
1200baudrate
Noparity
8databits
1stopbit
Noflowcontrol
Younolongerseeanyoutputonyourscreen,andthisisnormal.
2. Powercycle(switchoffandthenon)therouterandpresstheSPACEBARfor1015secondsinorder
togenerateasignalsimilartothebreaksequence.
3. Disconnectyourterminal,andreconnectwitha9600baudrate.YouentertheROMMonitormode.
Ifallthesemethodsfailtoproperlysendabreak,retrytheproceduresfromadifferentterminalorPC
platform.
