Station 2 (M249 MG)
Clear, Perform a Function Check, Load, and Perform Immediate Action on the
M249 Machine Gun

Task: Clear, perform a function check, load, and perform immediate action on the M249
machine gun mounted on HMMWV.

Conditions: Given a fully operational, mounted M249 machine gun loaded with dummy
ammunition.

Standards: Without references and within 3 minutes, the crewman will (IAW TM 9-
1005-201-10)-

• Clear (in sequence) the M249 machine gun.


• Perform a function check (in sequence) on the M249 machine gun.
• Load (in sequence) the M249 machine gun.
• Perform immediate action on the M249 machine gun.

Personnel, equipment, and Material Required

• M249 machine gun. (1 per evaluator)


• Dummy, linked, 5.56 mm ammunition (5 rounds per machine gun).
• HMMWV with mount
• TM 9-1005-201-10.
• Procedures guide

Test Planning Time


Administrative time: 5 minutes
Test time: 3 minutes
Total time: 8 minutes

Other Information
Before the crewman arrives, the evaluator will-
• Set up the equipment and material at the test station.
• Check the machine gun and equipment for defects.

Instruction to the Crewman

"In front of you is an M249 machine gun. You must clear, perform a function check,
load, and perform immediate action on the machine gun within 3 minutes. Clearing,
performing the function check, loading, and performing immediate action must be done
in sequence and without references. Do you understand the requirements of this test?
(Answer questions.) You may begin." (Start the time.)

1. Cleared (in sequence) the M249 machine gun.

a. Moved the safety switch to the F (fire) position. ______ ______

d. Raise the cover and feed mechanism assembly, check for brass,

h. Check the space between the bolt assembly and chamber. ______ ______

i. Insert 2 fingers in the magazine well and feel for brass

j. Close the cover and feed mechanism assembly. ______ ______

k. Move the safety to the F (fire)position. ______ ______

l. Pull the cocking handle to the rear, press the trigger, and ease
the bolt forward. ______ ______

2. Performed a function check (in sequence) on the M249 machine gun.

a. Grasped the cocking handle with the right hand and pulled bolt

b. Keep the weapon oriented on the target area. Ensure your face
Is not directly over the feed cover, and open the feed cover. ______ ______

c. If the weapon still does not fire, remove the ammunition belt or
Magazine. ______ ______
1) If no rounds in the chamber-
a) Reload and try to fire at the target. If the
weapon fires, you have corrected the stoppage. ______ ______

b) If the weapon fails to fire, take immediate action


(step 1). If the weapon still fails to fire, continue
to the next step. ______ ______

c) Clear the weapon. ______ ______

d) Disassemble and inspect the weapon. ______ ______

e) Clean, lubricate, and replace damaged or


missing parts, as needed. ______ ______

2) If a cartridge is in the chamber-

a) Remove all ammunition from the feed tray and

b) Try to fire. If the weapon fires, you have


corrected the stoppage. Reload and continue

During training, wait 15 minutes before applying remedial action. During combat, wait five seconds

4. Take immediate action to secure a runaway weapon.

a. If after the trigger is released the weapon continues to fire, take one of the following actions:

1) Hold the weapon on the target until the weapon stops
