Module 1: Workshop Introduction and Orientation

Day and Time

Day One, 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (30 minutes)

Purpose

The purpose of this module is to introduce participants to one another and the trainers, to provide an
overview of the upcoming content and process for the 3-day workshop, and to develop with the
participants a set of guidelines for working together.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

1. Describe the content of the 3-day workshop.

2. Identify training assumptions and guidelines.

Overview of Major Sections

I. Exercise: Introductions (10 minutes)


II. Presentation: Overview of Workshop Agenda and Learning Objectives (10 minutes)
III. Presentation: Training Assumptions/Guidelines (10 minutes)

1. Overhead projector and screen

2. Two pads of newsprint, two easels, dark colored markers, and masking tape

Materials in Participant Manual

All transparencies give to the participant.

Room Requirements

Participants should be seated in groups at round tables of six to eight people each. Participants must
be able to move around to convene in various configurations of smaller groups to work on tasks.
The room should be large enough for small groups to work without disturbing one another. An
appropriate number of breakout rooms may be used instead.

10 minutes I.Exercise: Introductions

A.Welcome participants

1.Welcome participants
2.Introduce yourself and your role
3.Introduce co-trainers and any observers.

B.Introduce participants

1.If the group is under 20 people, ask participants to introduce


themselves and state where they are from.

2.If there are more than 20 people, you can:

a. have participants form groups of three and introduce themselves to


each other as above.

b. have participants introduce themselves at their tables in a round


robin fashion.

1.This workshop is for people who make presentations on ATOD and
related issues and for those who facilitate the work
of groups. The intent is to prepare participants to be
more effective presenters and facilitators.

2.After this introductory module, the workshop consists of three day


long modulesCone on presentation skills and one on
facilitation skills.

A. Importance of Shared Assumptions and Guidelines

1. It is helpful to the learning task if participants understand the


assumptions of the trainers concerning how learning
will occur and what is expected from the
participants.

2. It is also helpful for the trainer(s) and the participants to develop


guidelines for working together to establish the best
climate for learning.

Review the assumptions that you as trainer(s) have for the training.
Keep this list, with the additions from the participants,
posted during the training.

✔ Our goal (as training staff) is to help you achieve the objectives
for this workshop and to have some fun.

✔ Each of us has a unique pathway to excellence in public


speaking and facilitating. No two individual's style will look
the same.

✔ Each of us has something to teach and to learn. It will help if


we can be open to new experiences and ideas and to be
resources to one another.

pass always exists.

✔ Taking small risks to challenge yourself will increase your


learning and that of the group.

Ask the group to brainstorm suggestions that they have for the way
they would like to interact during the training.

Ask if everyone can agree to the items on the listCaddress any


reservations/concerns.

Add to this list and remind people of it during the session, if needed.
