1. PURPOSE
The document describes the methods proposed to be used for the coating operations that
will be carried out as part of ASU Construction Works of Qatar Shell GTL Plant (Pearl) in
Ras Laffan Industrial City of Qatar including similar works in TSF Area.

2. SCOPE
This method statement identifies the general steps, arrangements & precautions for the
protection and coating of concrete surfaces. Actual concrete works (i.e. preparation of
formworks & reinforcements and pouring and curing of the concrete) as well as repair of
the defects on the concrete surface are beyond the scope of this document. Although
considered to be a different activity, the work described in this method statement is
complementary to concrete curing. The scope of this document also includes the coating
of below-ground concrete surfaces with water-based bituminous emulsion as well as the
works for blinding concrete and building paper.

3. HSSE
All works will be in compliance with the State of Qatar laws and regulations, Ras Laffan
Industrial City and international standards/codes, and Company and Contractor
requirements and instructions.
All personnel will go through Gama, Linde and Company Safety Induction courses as well
as other trainings as identified by their supervisor. Please see Document Number GTLGM-001-A-5635 for details.
A Job Safety Analysis (JSA) specific for this work including a Risk Assessment, is
prepared as per Gama procedure GTL-GM-001-A-5626 and is attached herein. Such JSA
addresses the hazards associated with each task within the scope of this Method
Statement and introduces the controls that will be implemented to reduce the associated
risks to acceptable levels. The JSA will be used by the Site Supervisor as the basis of his
TSTI / TSTO and Toolbox Talks.
All personnel will have PPE required for their specific tasks in addition to the minimum
PPE (coveralls, safety goggles, safety shoes, high-visibility vests, gloves) at site at all
times as required.
In the event of a release, fire or explosion, employees will secure their area and evacuate
to the nearest muster point. Once all employees are evacuated the supervisor will conduct
a headcount to verify all employees are out of harms way. The supervision will report this
to Contractor. Emergency Contact numbers for Company, Contractor and Gama will be
posted onsite.
All vehicles and equipment used for the subject work will be inspected and certified as
required.
Drivers and operators will be competent and will have attended all required trainings set
forth in project procedures and specifications.

immediately; and approval of Contractor and Company will be waited before proceeding
with the relocation or removal of the same. The barricades for such activities will be
temporary.

7.2.

BLINDING CONCRETE
A layer of blinding concrete of 50 mm minimum thickness will be placed under
foundations. The blinding layer will be laid immediately after excavation, draining and
compacting of the bed area, in order to avoid disturbance of soil by rain or ground
water.
Minimum 7 days and maximum 14 days after pouring blinding concrete, a protective
coating, with the materials and using the procedures described herein, will be applied to
the blinding concrete. The protective coating will form part of the foundation protection
system.
Blinding concrete will be C20/25 concrete with a minimum thickness of 50-mm unless
otherwise specified by the Contractor and/or the Company.

7.3.

COATING OF BLINDING CONCRETE

Referred to 7.4.1 and 7.4.2

7.4.

APPLICATION OF PROTECTIVE COATING

All buried concrete surfaces, including the top surface of the blinding, will be coated with
bituminous emulsion; which will be extended 250-mm to above-ground. The material to
be used for this task will be submitted for approval of Contractor and/or Company prior
to commencement.
The material will be applied as per manufacturers recommendations. Product Data
Sheet of sample material (already approved by Contractor and Company) is attached.
In general, the recommendation of the manufacturer of the protective coating will be
followed; however, some guidelines are described below.
7.4.1. Surface Preparation

All surfaces must be sound, even, and free from dust, loose particles and any
contamination.

Surfaces will be dry when coating is applied.

Manual chipping may be used to remove bubbles and holes on the surface

7.4.2. Application

Coating will be placed by brush for small areas or by broom or roller for large areas.

The coating will be dry before the onset of rain.

Special care will be taken that the coating of the blinding layer fills potential
irregularities of the blinding layer and the other concrete surfaces.

If a first coating layer does not provide a sufficient surface without any gaps in the
coating a second layer will be applied. Each layer must be allowed to dry before
applying the next one.

7.4.3. Refill

For the refill works care will be taken that the coating is not destroyed.

Only non destructive sandy backfill material will be used for the refill areas in contact
with the coating.

Backfilling will not be placed before coating has thoroughly dried.

During hot weather, a drying time of 3 days will be allowed.

8. QA/QC
A Quality Assurance System will be operated conforming to related standards.
Controls and checks will be established and documented through QCP and ITP for
Concrete Works (T-4.234.541 and T-4.234.575 respectively).

Should have a brushed or wood float finish, and should be free from contamination
by any material that could impair adhesion. All surface defects should be repaired by
approved methods. Protrusions greater than 3 mm should be removed.
For Old Painted Surfaces
Loose material and/or organic growth must be removed with a stiff bristle (not wire)
brush and spores should be killed with a suitable fungicide which should be
scrubbed in, left for 24 hours and washed off with clean water.
Where surfaces are chalking and friable, remove all loose material, liberally apply
stabilising solution and allow to dry for at least 24 hours. Cracks should be made
good, allowed to dry and then covered with BC Bitumen Coating into which is
embedded open weave glass fibre scrim. Spalled concrete should be made good.
