How we address the

new LOMCE curriculum
Students are the centre of education and the reason
why education exists. Learning at school must
be directed towards preparing autonomous,
critically-minded people, capable of thinking
for themselves.
Preamble of the Ley Orgnica de Mejora
de la Calidad Educativa.

Education at the centre of society

Education takes place in many contexts: at school,
in the family at home, and in the wider community.
Our coursebooks aim to transcend the borders of the
classroom. As well as teaching language, they
incorporate projects and tasks that address real life,
helping students to integrate into society.

Collaborating with teachers

We believe that education is a collaborative process and
that we can only achieve the best results if we truly work
together, listening and learning from each other.
When developing learning resources we have lots of
questions in mind: What do classrooms look like now?
How are classrooms changing? How would teachers like
their classrooms to look? How can we prepare todays
learners for the 21st century? The solutions we offer are
developed for you, with you.
We work hard to stay informed about developments at
a national and regional level to make sure that our
materials meet local requirements and address every
users needs. We continually revise our publications to
ensure that they offer teachers everything they need.

Affirming diversity
An inclusive educational system provides equal opportunity
for all. Oxford coursebooks pay particular attention to
multiple intelligences, helping students with different
learning abilites and backgrounds to achieve success.

Language learning
Our aim is for all students to learn to communicate
effectively. Oxford materials provide a variety of practical
language activities to develop language skills and the
ability to use language in functional situations.

Digital literacy

Students at the centre of education

The belief that students are at the centre of education
informs everything we do. Our educational resources
enable learning and facilitate the teachers role as a
guide in the students journey of discovery.

www.oup.es

The new curriculum stresses the importance of digital

literacy and the appropriate use of technology to assist
learning. Oxford invests in the ongoing research and
development of digital media to bring technology into
the learning environment where it adds the most value.
Students are encouraged to interact with digital content
in ways that are both productive and motivational.

Language teaching in the 21st century

The new curriculum incorporates well know up-to-date
international trends in language teaching:

Plurilingualism
The European Union establishes the promotion of
plurilingualism as an essential objective in the construction
of a European project. The new curriculum supports
plurilingualism, stepping up efforts to ensure that students
can communicate fluently in at least one foreign language.
The new Oxford CLIL textbooks address teaching different
content areas in English.

The Common European Framework of Reference

establishes linguistic competence levels, the Portfolio,
and a new approach towards skills.
Teaching should focus on communication.
Learning with Key Competences is a practical matter.
It is not so much knowing, but knowing how to do things
that counts.
Assessment should be designed with recognized criteria
and standards.
Oxford University Press English teaching materials are all
developed with these basic ideas in mind.

Key Competences
The new curriculum emphasises the importance of Key
Competences. Oxford coursebooks fully integrate Key
Competences into the learning experience:

Communicative functions
Communication is central to the language learning
experience. Oxford Courses prepare learners to be
active members of society as well as successful
language learners.

Learning to learn
Students learn new language and then put it into
practice in meaningful ways. They are guided and
supported in developing the skills needed to be
successful and confident lifelong learners.

Assessment criteria and standards

Oxford titles cover all of the language objectives
of the new curriculum as well as integrating Key
Competences. All of our courses provide a fully
comprehensive assesment package, facilitating frequent,
level-adapted assesment of students progress across
the skills as well as their preparation for external
examinations.

Oxford is here to help you

The introduction of the new curriculum will begin a period
of transition, and we will support teachers and students
every step of the way.
For more information on the new curriculum, including
answers to common questions and concerns, see
Guide to the LOMCE, written by Plcido Bazo and Marcos
Peate. The guide is exclusively available for download on

www.oxfordpremium.es.
Our Professional Development Department provides
teacher-training events and webinars as well as online
videos that offer practical tips and advice on interpreting
and implementing the reform.

How we make
your coursebook
When you step into a classroom, you set your students
on a journey, giving them the skills they need to succeed.
The teaching materials you choose can inspire and engage
them, catching their imagination and helping
to make learning a joy.

2 Creation

1 Research
Each new course is the result of teamwork. Teachers,
authors and editors all play an essential part in the
courses production, providing ideas and feedback
that influence the content and help decide how each
page works in the classroom.
Classroom visits, research trips and focus groups
have allowed us to work with thousands of teachers
across Spain. By identifying the content that students
really love and advising on the components that
make their lives easier, their opinions help to shape
our courses, ensuring that they meet the needs
of both students and teachers.
Changes to the curriculum also influence the process.
Our editors and authors keep up to date with
developments, making sure that our courses meet
the latest requirements. New teaching methods,
CLIL, blended learning and 21st century skills
also have an impact.
6

www.oup.es

Once our editors have identified the concept of

the new course, our expert authors get involved.
Many of our authors teach, or have taught, in
Spain and keep in close contact with the classroom
by visiting schools and talking to teachers at the
events we organize throughout the year. The authors
work with the editor to write the course, making
sure that it practises a range of skills and meets
curriculum requirements.
Together, the authors and the editor produce
a manuscript a document that includes the
written content of the course, along with instructions
for design and images and any audio or video
content. Once this is complete, the editor passes
the manuscript to the art editor, who will arrange
for preliminary pages to be designed.
The art editor chooses several artists to create
sample artwork. These samples will be shown
to a number of teachers and the artist that is
most popular will produce the final artwork.

5 Publication
4 Manufacturing
3 Development
The manuscript is edited and designed
to see how things will look on the page,
and photography and artwork research
is conducted in order to provide the
most appropriate images. As the process
progresses the pages go through a
systematic review that includes several
rounds of checking.

Once the development process

is completed and all reviews and
corrections have been made the files
are sent to the printer for printing and
binding. They are also used as a source
for digital conversion to e-books. When
the books are finished they are shipped
to the warehouse and are finally ready
for distribution.

Finally the course is ready for

students to use! But publication
isnt the end of the process:
authors and specialized teacher
trainers travel across Spain
helping teachers to get the best
from their course, answering
questions, giving advice and
listening to comments. The
feedback they gather will help
to provide the basis for the next
coursebook!

As the design evolves, content is checked

to see how it works on the page, how
it can help students find their way
around, and how it can engage their
interest. At this stage we invite teachers
to try the materials while they are still
in development, in order to incorporate
their feedback and ensure that they will
function in the classroom.
In the meantime, audio and video
content is recorded, edited and checked
for clarity and consistency. When all
of the course materials are complete
(audio, video, illustrations, photos ...)
the whole range of course components is
prepared. This includes Students Books,
Workbooks, Teachers Books, classroom
materials, interactive whiteboard tools
and much more. At the same time digital
books and Apps are developed, using
the same original material transformed
for digital media and adapted so that it
will work interactively.

Teach grammar and vocabulary through integrated skills

and motivate students with fast moving mini-topics
Each unit of Mosaic has an integrated approach which
combines skills work with the learning of grammar and
vocabulary. Students also learn about different cultures,
practise doing a variety of social tasks, and acquire a
range of transferable skills which can be used outside
the classroom.

Mosaic breaks down each unit into mini-topics, giving

students something new to look forward to in each lesson.
In level 4 the emphasis is on exam practice and developing
skills to bring students to the required level for the end
of ESO.
Students of Mosaic will be ready to take their exams,
and to function in English in the real world.
Mini-topics present the unit theme in
a new context on each spread.

Every unit has four mini-topics. The examples shown are from Mosaic 3.

CLIL and Culture

Culture and CLIL pages are included in each unit, covering the same subject from
different contexts. This means that students have a much richer experience of the
subject, and language is reinforced and recycled in overlapping contexts.
The Culture text in each unit not only extends students knowledge about
the world, but also enriches their experience in a globalized world.

CLIL pages have been designed to make

learning intuititive with as much information as
possible in a form that is easily understood.

1 flute = d woodwind

There are four sections of instruments in a symphony

orchestra: strings, percussion, brass and woodwind.
The strings section is at the front of the orchestra. It is the
biggest section and consists of the violins, violas, cellos and
the double bass.
The woodwind section is behind the strings section. The
flutes, oboes, clarinets and bassoons are all woodwind.

Key:

The brass section is on each side of the woodwind section.

The trumpets, trombones and the tuba are on the right of
the woodwind section. The French horns are on the left.
Behind the brass and woodwind sections are the percussion
instruments drums and cymbals, for example, and
castanets.

Aircraft fuselages are tested during design and

development and samples are taken during construction.

I work for a company that designs and makes test

equipment for the aircraft and car industries. We have
offices in Barcelona and Madrid. I work in the Madrid
office mainly on test equipment for a European aircraft
company. I graduated in mechanical engineering and
at the same time studied English, taking two technical
subjects in English. During my degree course, I spent
nine months in the west of England working for a
company that make machine parts. After I graduated, I
was hired by my present company and I was assigned to
the design and operation of test equipment. Engineers
from France and England often visit our offices. We
speak English together. Of course I talk with them about
my own projects, but sometimes my co-workers ask me
to talk about their projects as well. So I work informally
as a kind of translator! But I dont mind.
Right now, Im testing aircraft fuselage panels that
are made from the latest carbon fibre composite
materials. These materials are light, with high
strength and stiffness, but they are harder to produce
than parts made from aluminium or titanium alloys.
However, improvements in their properties and
in manufacturing methods are made all the time.
Measured loads are applied at certain points to put
stress on the component. We use different instruments
such as strain gauges, load cells, and pressure
transmitters. Sometimes we perform fatigue tests
where the load is varied many times to simulate the
number of aircraft take-offs and landings.
Aircraft components are tested thoroughly because
any failure could end in disaster. I feel happy that my
job is keeping people safe.
