Herman Hertzberger is one of the most important and critically influential figures in international
architecture of the last 50 years. He has consistently championed a fundamentally humanist
modern architecture, rooted in its place and history, while simultaneously opening up new
possibilities for dwelling. In this monograph, Robert McCarter examines Hertzbergers most
important architectural works through analysis of the design process and guiding ideas,
particularly as these reflect Hertzbergers engagement with the Modernist tradition, architectural
history, urban space and the way we experience it.

Tange By Tange 1949-1959 - Kenzo Tange As Seen Through The Eyes Of Kenzo
Toto 2015 ISBN 9784887063471 Acqn 24831
Hb 28x31cm 252pp 200ills 100col 177
One of the 20th centurys most significant architects, Kenzo Tange combined traditional
Japanese styles with modernism, and took on major post-war urban redevelopment projects in
Tokyo and abroad. In 1960, Tange together with photographer Yasuhiro Ishimoto, architect
Walter Gropius, and graphic designer Herbert Bayer published a photobook titled Katsura, in
which he questioned the conventional historical perspectives on Japanese architecture. Many
previously unpublished photographs taken by Tange during the 1950s now appear in this
remarkably arranged volume, giving insight to his later works. With an introduction by Saikaku
Toyokawa and texts by Kenzo Tange.

Le Corbusier - Mesures de l'homme. Exhibition Catalogue

Centre Georges Pompidou 2015 ISBN 9782844266996 Acqn 24794
Hb 23x28cm 280pp 600ills 400col 34.50
Text in French
Architect, urban planner, painter and renowned sculptor, Le Corbusier has defined the man as a
universal metric reference in the architecture. The Centre Pompidou presents a major exhibition
on the architect, offering an new approach elaborated around the notion of human proportion.
The Centre Pompidou is devoting a completely new retrospective, featuring some three hundred
works, to the output of Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, aka Le Corbusier. Not only a visionary
architect, urban planner and theorist of modernity, but also a painter and sculptor, Le Corbusier
made a profound impression on the 20th century in dramatically changing architecture and the
way it is inhabited. His international career flourished long before globalisation made its
appearance. Adopting a decidedly innovative approach, the Centre Pompidou takes a fresh look
at the output of this major figure in modernity through the proportions of the human body, which
Le Corbusier considered essential as a universal principle. For the architect, this measurement
of man defined all aspects of architecture and spatial composition.

Landscape Architecture And Urban Design In The Netherlands. Yearbook 2014

Blauwdruk Publishers 2015 ISBN 9789075271836 Acqn 25095
Pb 24x31cm 172pp 250ills 100col 25
This volume comprises a critical review of exemplary urban and landscape design through 25
recent projects by Dutch architectural practices, both in the Netherlands and abroad. In an
interview with Winy Maas, the MVRDV partner is critical of todays popular grassroots initiatives,
versus top-down plans that are able to solve major planning problems like water management
and flood control, or mobility and accessibility. With findings to support this argument, the
message is to dare to think big, but without losing sight of the small scale. Five main themes
define the selection and critical essays: design as kickstart, innovative cities, design as research,
station central, and breathing space.

Informal markets are a central feature of the twenty-first centurys first tumultuous years. Both
part of and response to the homogenising forces of globalisation, they shape a volatile shadow
system of heterogeneous micro-locations. This "atlas" maps this new kind of urban system
emerging from the multi-directional movements of ongoing deregulations and realignments.
Offering a global perspective on the conflicted realities of informal marketplaces from survival
activities of the urban poor to transnational clandestine trade networks these analyses reveal
how informality has become a political instrument in the struggles around global market
integration.
