Welcome

V4.1 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2015

Mobility is changing work and the quality of work

completed. Its about putting the information (and parts)
you need where and when you need them.
Those with a few years under their belts will remember the early series of Star Trek, and
the science fiction fantasy of everybody having in their hand and/or on their wrist devices
to access capabilities and information wherever they were; even off the ship. Well, its not
science fiction now.
With a recent convergence of mobile devices and digital content, the whole mobile work
technology idea has taken a giant leap forward. And now, wearable technology comes
along with the promise of not even having to carry anything except the tools and parts
when working. To be able to work, be fully connected and have both hands free will add
so much time for those who use it. Being a connected part in an intelligent system that
can find parts, record information, even, say, task an engineer qualified for the job in
hand, will improve efficiency and quality.
In this issue, we look at how one airline managed the move to a mobile, tablet-based
system and leveraged the opportunity to build everything around the users. There is also an article on how RFID, is
converging with mobility to increase visibility and traceability of work and components, to tie parts to jobs and bring
an airline into the future; plus how the new concept is managed.
Youll enjoy the article on the way software, or rather what it can do, has enabled CAMO processes around the
world to be monitored and managed in real time from one central point. And, finally we step right into the next
stage of mobility with an article about what wearable devices are already making possible and what they might add
to the future workplace.
And, thats not all. We learn how Paul Saunders sees IT with the focus on mobility. Hes new to this column but
those of you who read Aircraft IT Operations issue will be familiar with Pauls knack for reading the present, looking
to the future and offering interesting perspectives on work with technology. Michael Denis, though, hasnt left us: he
is now offering to answer readers questions in a new resource that we call Ask an Expert. This will be a great chance
to tap into Michaels tremendous experience of managing the aircraft life-cycle.
Theres the usual overview of news and information affecting your sector plus Aircraft IT live demonstration
webinars are previewed and the recorded archive reviewed to help readers research the software market from the
convenience of their own desk and to find a package to match their needs from past webinars.

2MoRO builds its global presence and adds new

members to the Aero One user community
2MORO WAS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE NEW
RELEASE OF ITS WEB-BASED SOFTWARE, AEROWEBB IN LATE NOVEMBER 2014.

AERO-WEBB helps users with the optimization of

maintenance activities: fleet tracking, configuration control,
airworthiness management, maintenance planning and
execution, among other things. Aero-Webb 6.1 offers a new
way of data-access and navigation between transactions
to better answer users business needs. This new release
also improves airworthiness management functionality in a
dedicated and exhaustive cockpit.

2MORO HAS OPENED ITS

ASIA & PACIFIC OFFICE

CM

MJ

CJ

CMJ

2MORO chose Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) to set up its

Regional Office for Asia & Pacific in late January 2015. David
Ferrier, Director Business Development and Asia & Pacific
Representative for 2MoRO explained; We wanted to be closer
to our customers and partners and we are very satisfied to be
now located at the center of the ASEAN market. We strongly
believe in helping recently created aviation companies or
mature aviation groups by providing our proven solutions
based on SAP technology. In such a growing market, you
need to focus on your main business and not on IT concerns.
Our solutions are fully integrated with the worlds best ERP
so as to allow the General Management of our customers to
know in real time the situation as fas as costs and revenues
are concerned.
We have also recently enhanced our solution Aero One
dedicated to Aviation SMEs with a module dedicated to flight
scheduling and crew management. Such companies can now
rely on one unique system to efficiently manage all their needs:
Flight operations, Fleet management and CAMO, MRO, Human
Resources, Financials, Sales, Purchasing, Banking, Inventory,
Material Resources Planning, and Services. Thanks to all these
features, we are well prepared to help our local partners located
in each country of Asia & Pacific and to support them with their
Aviation customers projects. Our model is really unique: both
domestic expert and Aviation software specialist. Our local
partner is expert in the domestic regulations and will manage
the project with the customer in their local language and
2MoRO brings its Aviation software and expertise. Together we
offer the most profitable solution of the market.

TWO NEW MALAYSIAN AVIATION

COMPANIES SELECT AERO ONE

IN late January 2015, 2MoRO was really proud to announce

that MHS Aviation and BHIC AeroServices have chosen
Aero One to complement their ERP system based on SAP
Business One. Croesus IT solutions, the Malaysian 2MoRO
partner for these two projects, will be in charge of the
implementation by the end of Q1 2015.

These two new references show how important is the

connection between the ERP system and theAviation software
for small and medium sized companies which are looking for a
simple but proven, up-to-date and cost effective solution.
MHS and BHIC AeroServices are also concerned with the
launching of the GST (Goods and Services Tax) in Malaysia
and this new concern for Malaysian companies is also
very well managed by SAP Business One and Croesus IT
Solutions. The combination of SAP Business One + Aero
One builds one unique system to help 2MoROs customers
optimize purchasing and stock levels, to follow their fleet and
perform their maintenance as well as the creation of financial
reports based on the maintenance activities and the tracking
of the asset values.

A THIRD AIRBUS HELICOPTERS SUBSIDIARY

HAS CHOSEN AERO ONE TO MANAGE ITS
PART145 ACTIVITY

IT was a
cause for real
pleasure when,
in late January
2015, 2MoRO
announced the addition of the Chilean Airbus Helicopters
subsidiary to the Aero One users community. Airbus
Helicopters already runs SAP Business One for managing all
its standard business functions (sales, purchasing, inventory,
operations, financials, and human resources).
2MoRO is the preferred MRO software supplier to the
Airbus Helicopters Group for its small and medium sized
subsidiaries. Airbus Helicopters Chile has therefore decided
to implement Aero One to be more streamlined and more
efficient by integrating its specific Part 145 activities processes
to its ERP, SAP Business One. This follows on from 2MoROs
already successful implementation of Aero One in two Airbus
Helicopters subsidiaries in Malaysia and Kazakhstan on
time and in budget. The successful finalization of these two
convinced the Chilean subsidiary.
So, thanks to the combination SAP Business One + Aero
One, Airbus Helicopters Chile will be able to manage
its whole Maintenance Execution activities (aircraft and
equipment receiving, repair projects management,
maintenance tasks referential, work orders, time tracking,
inventory, sales process, and so on).
Aero One and SAP Business One are the most suitable
integrated solution for midsize Aviation companies looking
for a full ERP coverage enhanced with specialized modules for
their business:
Maintenance execution management;
Continuing airworthiness management;
Referential data management;
Flight scheduling and crew management.

Michael Steen, President and Chief Executive Officer,

EmpowerMX AircraftIT0115 PM.pdf 1 1/29/2015 4:34:38 PM

Titan Aviation Holdings, Inc. said Reflecting the significant

expansion in the size and value of our aircraft portfolio and
our desire to grow our business, we sought to find a software
solution that would enhance our ability to leverage the lease,
asset and records management requirements of our freightercentric fleet. AerData is already proven in the industry to be a
reliable partner capable of facilitating our business model and
supporting the achievement of our goals.
Commenting on the announcement, Mark Nieuwendijk,
Managing Director of AerData said We are delighted to
announce that Titan has selected our services. Titan joins a
growing list of organizations realizing the benefits that an
integrated system provider can offer.

AVIIT Inc. was pleased to announce, at

the beginning of November 2014, that
Rotorcraft Services Group (RSG) has
selected its eMan solution to simplify
the management of its technical
library. eMan will provide a centralized
document store and library for all of
RSGs technical publications associated
with the maintenance and repair of
aircraft and components. The solution

by AviIT Inc. from its data center in
St Louis, Missouri. It will provide RSG
aircraft maintenance technicians with
web-based access to the full range of
its documentation from any location
across the globe.
We wanted a system that would
provide our technicians with a very
robust and straightforward means
of accessing all of our technical
publications from any site at any time.
We also wanted to be able to avoid

the need to maintain a large estate of

local access devices and to ensure our
quality with current FAA conformity;
stated Mike Gallegos of RSG;
continuing, eMan fits the bill perfectly
and the range of existing helicopter
operators and service centres already
using the system provides comfort that
AviIT understands the demands of the
sector.
Kevin Clark, AviIT Chief Operating
Officer welcomed the selection by RSG.
We are delighted that an organization
with such a high commitment to
delivering a flexible yet high quality
service has selected eMan to meet its
requirements in the management of
technical publications. The solution has
been developed to allow users to focus
on the aircraft maintenance tasks rather
than the complexities of managing
technical publication. We look forward
to a long and prosperous relationship.

Boeing Teams With ANA to Improve Operational Efficiency

OPTIMIZED MAINTENANCE PROGRAM TO APPLY
ADVANCED ANALYTICS TOOLS

AS November 2014 opened, Boeing and ANA (All Nippon Airways) announced that
they are teaming up to implement operational improvements for ANAs fleet. The
improvements are aimed at reducing costs and increasing efficiency of maintenance
operations for ANAs current and future 777 models as part of the Boeing Optimized
Maintenance Program (OMP) service.
The efficient performance of our 777 and 777X fleet together with Optimized
Maintenance Program (OMP) will add value to our operations, said Takeo Kikuchi,
Director of Engineering, ANA. We were very pleased with Boeings offer of services
to center on cost reductions in our 777 fleet maintenance operations, and we look
forward to working with the Boeing teams to achieve these improvements.
ANA recently finalized orders for 20 777-9Xs and six 777-300ER airplanes. The
Boeing Optimized Maintenance Program targets improved maintenance costs
for ANAs current 777-300 fleet as well as future deliveries of the 777X airplanes.
Improvements will include reduced scheduled maintenance labor costs, lower
materials costs and faster airplane maintenance turn times. The Optimized
Maintenance Program provides a competitive advantage to an airline by applying
specialized analytics tools as well as Boeings unique airplane design and certification
knowledge to identify ways to streamline airplane maintenance programs. Boeing
Commercial Aviation Services Professional Services teams will perform analysis of
ANA historical maintenance data and develop a maintenance program for ANAs 777
fleet.
The Optimized Maintenance Program is one of the many ways we are giving our
customers the Boeing Edge, by combining our teams experience and knowledge

with advanced analytics tools to identify all of the strengths, constraints and
opportunities that factor into an airlines maintenance programs, said Ken Sain,
director of Professional Services, Boeing Commercial Aviation Services. In the span
of a few short months, we will work together with ANA and their local regulatory
agencies to develop the most effective and efficient maintenance program for ANAs
777 fleet.
By evaluating and analyzing a maintenance program, including logbooks,
scheduled maintenance data, component maintenance records and other metrics,
Boeing develops recommendations for maintenance program enhancements
customized to accommodate the unique operating environments and specific
operational goals of the airline. Boeing technical consultants also work directly with
local regulatory authorities to secure approval and agreement on any recommended
maintenance program changes. Boeings OMP services have also recently been
adopted by several other airlines, including Ryanair and Cathay Pacific. Boeing
hosted a presentation highlighting its OMP services, entitled Maintenance Program
Optimization at Aviation Week MRO Asia in Singapore.

COMMSOFT, developer and vendor in aviation engineering

and maintenance systems, was pleased to announce in late
October 2014 that AirExplore, based in Bratislava, Slovakia,
had signed a five year contract for the use of OASES.
Commsofts flagship product, OASES is an MRO IT system
which offers technical sophistication whilst being intuitively
user-friendly. AirExplore will be using OASES to support its four
Boeing 737-400s and a Boeing 737-800 which provide charter
flights for holiday companies as well as additional capacity
for other airlines on both short and long-term contracts. To
allow for scalability, OASES is structured in a modular format
and AirExplore has selected all of the following modules:
Core, Airworthiness, Planning, Production, Materials, Line
Maintenance Control and Warranty. AirExplore has also opted
to run OASES on standalone servers which are currently being
procured; The implementation of the system is scheduled for
late 2014/early 2015.
Nick Godwin, Commsoft Managing Director, commented:
Winning this contract is excellent news for us and
further evidence that OASES really does stand apart from
the competition. Were looking forward to a swift and
successful implementation of the system and to a long-term
collaboration with AirExplore in support of their ACMI and
charter operations.
Mr Jan Kassak, Maintenance Director at AirExplore, added:
In light of our increasing number of aircraft, we were
looking for a professional program to manage the continuing
airworthiness and maintenance of our fleet. We chose
OASES as the best system which meets our requirements
and provides a well-arranged and logical system in all areas
which are necessary for the management of engineering and
maintenance. I believe OASES will meet our expectations.

ARPIEM AVIATION USING OASES TO PROVIDE

CAMO SERVICES FOR VEGA AVIATION

IN mid-November 2014, Commsoft, announced that existing

Commsoft partner, Arpiem Aviation, will be using OASES to
provide CAMO services for Vega Aviations two Boeing 737300s. Headquartered in Turkey, Vega Aviation provides fleet

management, consultancy and representation services for flag

carriers and charter airlines in Turkey, CIS Countries, Europe,
Africa and Asia.
EASA Part M-approved for Boeing 737-300/400/500
(CFM56), Arpiem Aviation has been using OASES since 2011.
Commsofts flagship product, OASES is an MRO IT system
offering technical sophistication whilst being intuitively userfriendly.
Nick Godwin, Commsoft Managing Director, commented:
Were delighted that Arpiem Aviation, a Commsoft strategic
partner since 2011, has won this contract to provide CAMO
services for Vega Aviation. Its further evidence that OASES
really can help professional aircraft maintenance operations to
attract new business.

OGMA SIGNS CONTRACT WITH COMMSOFT

TO BECOME THE LATEST OASES USER

IN early December 2014, Commsoft, was also able to

announce that OGMA, the Portuguese specialist aviation
company, has signed a four concurrent users, 5-year contract
to use OASES for its CAMO and engine support operations.
OGMA will be using OASES to support an international
customer base, including third party airlines and corporate
aviation fleets.
To allow for scalability, OASES is structured in a modular
format and OGMA has selected the following modules: Core,
Airworthiness, Planning and Line Maintenance Control. To
operate OASES, OGMA will be taking advantage of Commsofts
newly-expanded hosting environment and the company has
already planned for a prompt implementation.
Nick Godwin, Commsoft Managing Director, commented:
OGMA is a successful and growing business with an
international reputation, so we were delighted by their
decision to choose OASES as their favoured MRO IT system.
Its a decision that also provides further justification for the
investment we have made in providing customers with a
Commsoft hosting option.

that could help them drive value from the large amounts of
data they were beginning to accumulate. He also developed
the first Electronic Techlog. CoreData was a successful
venture and he finally sold the company to Rolls Royce.
The solutions continue to be marketed by OSyS which is a
wholly owned subsidiary of Rolls Royce. Since then, Hugh
has been consulting through his company dmblue Limited,
predominantly within the aviation sector.
For a number of years now I have been interested in driving
value from data especially within engineering disciplines of
airlines and aircraft maintenance companies. In relation to
this, I have been following EmpowerMX for quite some time
and am very familiar with how its unique software products
produce the actionable intelligence todays successful
aviation-business leaders now employ to make great and
timely asset-management decisions. Because of this, I look
forward to working with the EmpowerMX leadership team to
quickly expand our business horizons and to further cement
our reputation as an industry-recognized leader in providing
aviation maintenance-management services and solutions,
says Dr. Revie.
We are indeed fortunate to have Hugh join our senior
leadership team, says Dinakara Nagalla President and CEO,
EmpowerMX. His extensive aviation-industry background
and seasoned leadership experience will enable us to achieve
the aggressive business-expansion objectives weve set for
ourselves for the EMEA region. We eagerly look forward
to working alongside Hugh as we position ourselves for
continued growth and success.

EMPOWERMX OPENS NEW EMEA REGIONAL

OFFICE IN LONDON, U.K.

IT was right at the end of October 2014 when EmpowerMX,

announced that it has opened a regional headquarters for
Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) based in the U.K.
This move is precipitated by rapidly expanding demand in

EMEA for the companys FleetCycle brand maintenance

management solutions. FleetCycle is already used by most
major airlines in North America with proven savings.
EmpowerMX Limited, the EMEA head office, is located at
5 New Street Square, London, United Kingdom, EC4A 3TW;
telephone: +44 7989 389 119; email: info.emea@empowermx.
com.
Said Dinakara Nagalla, President and CEO of EmpowerMX,
This move is a natural progression for our firm. Our business
is dramatically expanding in EMEA and especially in the U.K.,
and we need top talent situated in proximity to be able to
manage this business and support our growth. Our cloud
based, tablet driven, lean, 100% digital predictive maintenance
tools will provide an excellent alternative to the airlines, third
party MROs, defense operators and OEMs; a new tool, that
feels native to do their business, which they severely lack
today.

With decreased spending and growth
at a halt across Europe, companies are
looking for smarter ways to operate,
both in order to remain profitable and to

fine-tune their operations to achieve
cost savings and improve rather
than compromise quality is in the
way they manage enterprise data and

Flatirons enterprise CLM solutions help
organizations cut costs from often
out-dated systems and processes while
maintaining or improving operations,
also delivering ROI on aggressive
timelines.
As a result, demand for Flatirons

solution. With the addition of our new
UK office and established partner
network, Flatirons offers all three to help
European clients adapt to todays tough
economic climate.
Flatirons UK office is located north

FLATIRONS RELEASES
CORENA PINPOINT
MOBILE 6.0 TO DELIVER
INFORMATION TO LINE
AND BASE AIRCRAFT
MECHANICS AT THE POINT
OF PERFORMANCE

ALSO in mid-November 2014, Flatirons

Solutions announced the release of
CORENA Pinpoint Mobile 6.0, the
companys platform- and device-agnostic
mobile solution for line and base
aircraft maintenance. With this release
of CORENA Pinpoint Mobile, Flatirons
gives airline and MRO mechanics access
to the broadest range of document
types for the largest number of aircraft
through mobile devices including
smartphones, tablets, phablets, and
laptops helping to deliver the right
information to mechanics at the point
of performance and increase aircraft
utilization.
More than 800 American Airlines
mechanics use tablets with CORENA
Pinpoint Mobile to service aircraft and
return them to active use.
The aviation industry was one of

the first to adopt mobile devices by

equipping pilots with tablets for use in
the cockpit. Benefits afforded by mobile
devices for line and base maintenance
also are helping adoption in aircraft
maintenance take off, as airlines and
Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO)
organizations realize the time savings
of reducing trips to computer kiosks to
access documentation.
In line maintenance, its a really great
day when a mechanic is sitting down
because the plane is flying, said Blair
Gregg, who oversaw the deployment
of more than 800 tablets with CORENA
Pinpoint Mobile to American Airlines

mechanics. But when an airplane needs

attention, we want our mechanics to
fix it fast. Giving them tablets keeps our
mechanics on the plane, which saves
time and keeps flights running.
American Airlines was an early adopter
of CORENA Pinpoint Mobile and is
currently implementing version 6.0
thanks to benefits realized from the
product. The airlines early adoption
of the solution helped drive feature
enhancements implemented in version
6.0, including:
High performance architecture: Faster
search, browsing, content processing,
and document rendering across
a wide range of device types and
connectivity modes.
Easy-to-use interface: Simplified
navigation of the native tablet
application to help mechanics find
specific documentation as quickly as
possible.
Smart connectivity: The application
automatically switches to offline
mode when a mechanic loses an
Internet connection, providing
continuous access to documentation

without requiring the user to

manually change modes.
Support for more document and
aircraft types: CORENA Pinpoint
Mobile 6.0 now supports the largest
number of airframe document types,
including nearly all Boeing and Airbus
aircraft, in one solution.
Support for many engine models:
Through deployment at major
operators, CORENA Pinpoint Mobile
6.0 brings support for major engine
models from leading manufacturers,
many of whom are also CORENA
Suite adopters.
Flatirons is committed to helping its
customers deliver the right information,
at the right time, to the right people
to drive greater task performer
productivity and equipment utilization,
said JD Sillion, chief solutions officer for
Flatirons. CORENA Pinpoint Mobile 6.0
gives airline operators and MROs the
most flexibility to make their mechanics
as productive as possible, regardless
of the mobile device, Web browser, or
other method of information access
they use.

FLATIRONS GROWING
WORLDWIDE PRESENCE
WITH DUBAI EXPANSION

BY late January 2015, Flatirons

Solutions, Inc. had begun the process
of opening a regional office in Dubai.
The new office, scheduled to open
in mid-2015, will provide local sales
and customer support for the regions
airline operators and maintenance,
repair, and overhaul (MRO) providers
along with technology and service
partners in the region that are seeing
increased demand for content lifecycle
management solutions.
The companys Middle East expansion
follows momentum in 2014 from the
selection of the companys CORENA
Suite solution by LATAM Airlines Group
(the largest South American airline),
the opening of an office in the UK to
extend its European presence from
its operations in Germany and Nordic
countries, and the extension of its
facility in Colorado to accommodate the
companys growing staff. Investments
in staff and facilities are being coupled
with new CORENA Suite releases that

will extend current solution capabilities

in functional areas that include mobile
eTaskcards, next-generation Flight
Operations, 3D, and others. Our
initiative to open a Dubai office in 2015
reflects the impressive growth and
industry leadership of Middle Eastern
airline operators and MROs, as well as
our commitment to enabling partners
around the world, said Geoffrey Godet,
Flatirons CEO. A local presence will
allow us to provide essential support
and continuity that customers and
partners in the Middle East require and
to support long-term relationships in
the region.
Interested and qualified technical
publications, software engineering,
and application support experts in
the Dubai region who are invited
to contact Flatirons via the Careers
section of its website (http://www.
flatironssolutions.com/about/

employment opportunities. Qualified
candidates should check back

Swiss-AS AMOS builds on success and adds another customer in Asia Pacific
FIJI AIRWAYS TAKES OFF WITH AMOS AND SELECTS
SWISS-AS AS MRO SOFTWARE PROVIDER

Airbus S.A.S 2013 (H. GOUSS)

FIJI Airways recently awarded its MRO software contract to Swiss-AS and will start
to implement AMOS early next year. Given Fijis geographic location, Swiss-AS is in
the ideal position of being able to support Fiji Airways either from the US, or from
the Asia-Pacific office.
The airlines management strategically decided to re-new its Maintenance &
Engineering software with a state-of-the-art solution, supporting its growth plans

and providing industry best-practice processes to the technical department. A

further key decision factor was the high degree of integration of AMOS functions,
ensuring that required maintenance data needs to be entered only once, while
assuring an appropriate information flow beyond departmental boundaries. A
reference visit to a dedicated AMOS customer in Asia helped to convince Fiji Airways
evaluation team that AMOS is the most appropriate choice for a future-proof MRO
software solution that will meet the needs of the current and future business as it
develops.
In addition to the pride we feel that Fiji Airways has decided on AMOS, I am sure
that this beautiful destination will be an additional incentive for our consultants and
trainers who will be involved in the implementation project, says Ronald Schaeuffele,
CEO of Swiss-AS.
Stefan Pichler, Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO commented: Were
delighted to appoint Swiss-AS for the provision of its unique MRO software which
will enhance the quality of the maintenance we carry out at Fiji Airways. As a bestin-class airline, weve chosen a partner who we believe is able to deliver the high
standard of service we require for our maintenance and technical operations.

SWISS-AS BUILDING ON SUCCESS OF PREVIOUS YEARS AS

AMOS COMMUNITY GREW BY 11 NEW MEMBERS

IN 2014, Swiss-AS MRO software AMOS was adopted by 11 new customers,

among them well-known names such as Philippine Airlines, EL AL Israel Airlines,
and Aerolneas Argentinas. In line with the growth of the AMOS community, the
Swiss-AS team has likewise expanded (20% FTE growth in 2014). As at early January
2015, Swiss-AS had more than 140 employees who support the growing number

of customers and are committed to the further development of AMOS. A strong

performance in 2014 was reflected in a more than impressive growth in revenue of
around 22%.
A big step in 2014 was the relocation of Swiss-AS headquarters to a location in
Allschwil (Basel), close to the airport. The bright and modern office space is easily
accessible from the airport and the main station by public transport or taxi. The
new location offers the firms customers modern facilities for classroom training and
meetings. 2014 was also characterised by two significant anniversaries: Firstly, AMOS,
which was launched as a software development project within Crossair in 1989,
turned 25. Secondly, the company Swiss-AS, which was founded in 2004 when the
AMOS business activities were transferred from the IT department of SWISS to the
newly founded subsidiary of SWISS , namely Swiss Aviation Software, celebrated its
10th birthday.
On the functional side, Swiss-AS appointed a dedicated team which focuses on
developing the touch-optimised mobile package AMOSmobile that will initially
compile a suite of modules covering the line maintenance process - to be launched
in 2015. In addition, the roll-out of new and enhanced functions with regard
to AMOS 10 was continued in 2014 providing customers with a state-of-the-art
software solution.
In December 2014, Swiss-AS held an AMOS webinar (organized by www.aircratit.
com), covering topics such as the firms implementation strategy, the new Order
Management module as well as AMOSmobile. In case you missed the webinar,
please send an email to marketing@swiss-as.com.
An all-new AMOS brochure was released last year, while the homepage SWISS-AS.
COM was updated with additional information on AMOS and Swiss-AS.

IFS APPLICATIONS 9 TO BE
RELEASED AT IFS WORLD
CONFERENCE 2015, TAKING
PLACE ON MAY 57, 2015 IN
BOSTON, USA

IFS, the global enterprise applications

company, announced in late November
2014 that the new version of its
extended business software suite IFS
Applications 9 will be released at the
IFS World Conference 2015, May 57 in
Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Attendees
at the event will be the first to learn
about the new features and capabilities
of IFS Applications 9.
IFS Applications 9 builds upon the
foundations that have made IFS a
recognised industry leader*. The
upcoming version will offer new and
existing customers major enhancements
in terms of agility and usability, as
well as powerful capabilities tailored
to support customers in IFSs target
industries.
In light of IFSs commitment to quality,
IFS Applications 9 is being thoroughly
tested both internally as well as in the
field. Delivered in the form of an early
adopter programme, IFS is working
with several global end-user companies
based in the U.S., Scandinavia, and
Europe, who represent a diverse
spread of industries, including: service
management, high-tech, industrial
manufacturing, and offshore contracting.
Details of the early adopters experience
in leveraging IFS Applications 9 will be
provided at IFS World Conference in
May 2015.
We are very excited about revealing
the new capabilities of IFS Applications
in May next year, IFS SVP R&D Thomas
Sld said. By closely following the
developments in our key industries
and listening to the feedback of our
customers, we will be able to present
a new version that sets the standard
for usability and agility. We have made
some strategic investments with IFS
Applications 9 to innovate and improve
the customer experience in order
to deliver even more value to our

customers.
The IFS World Conference 2015
offers three days of keynote speeches,
breakout sessions, world-leading
technology, training, networking and
entertainment, all teaching true business
agility, helping people get closer to
their business and turn change into a
business advantage.
IFS was named a Leader in the Gartner
Magic Quadrant for Single-Instance
ERP for Product-Centric Midmarket
Companies, 2013.

NORWEGIAN ARMED
FORCES EXTENDS ITS USE
OF IFS APPLICATIONS

THE IFS solution has been rolled out to

additional Navy personnel, and is now
supporting 2,500 users in the armed
forces with mission-critical configuration
management, MRO, and logistics
IFS, the global enterprise applications
company, announced in late January
2015 that the Royal Norwegian Navy
has decided to extend its use of IFS
Applications by purchasing additional
user licenses.
Since 1999 the Norwegian Armed
Forces (Air Force, Army, and Navy
including the Coast Guard) have been
using IFS Applications for military
logistics to manage mission-critical
processes such as configuration
management, including document and
spare parts management, maintenance,
repair, overhaul (MRO), and supply chain.
The Navys recent decision to purchase
additional users means that the IFS

industry solution will empower more

personnel working deployed on one
of its vessels or on land. The solution is
distributed between vessels and onshore
sites, also offering integration with the
government finance and HR system.
Complying with the Navys operational
requirement for six months operation
in autonomous mode, the IFS solution
can process work as usual and replicate
the data to the master database when
deployed in theatre as well as when
returning from duty.
IFS Applications is the only solution
that lives up to the stringent operational
requirements of the Armed Forces in
general and the Navy in particular, IFS
A&D industry director Graham Grose
said. Efficient defence logistics and
asset management are mission-critical as
they underpin the efforts of all military
personnel whether they are deployed
overseas or working domestically.
We are very proud of the continuing
trust that the Royal Norwegian Navy
places in our industry solution, IFS
Scandinavia CEO Glenn Arnesen added.
By working in close collaboration with
the Norwegian Armed Forces, we have
been able to incorporate invaluable
best practices into our technology,
resulting in a unique industry solution
that encompasses everything from
project management and approval
routing, configuration management,
document management and archiving,
to project delivery and warehousing,
purchasing, warranty and change
management.

Mxi Technologies changes at the top, a key event and some significant new customers
MXI TECHNOLOGIES ANNOUNCES BILL
CAVITT AS PRESIDENT AND CHIEF
EXECUTIVE OFFICER; DAVE SEIBEL TO
CONTINUE AS CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

IT was early October 2014 when Mxi Technologies announced

that Bill Cavitt had been named Mxis new President and
CEO and appointed as a member of the companys Board
of Directors. In this role, Mr. Cavitt will be responsible for
working with the executive team to further strengthen Mxi
Technologies market leadership position and drive growth.
Mr. Cavitt succeeds Dave Seibel, who is retiring after nearly
four years of leading Mxi and capping an outstanding
executive career for the past 35 years. Mr. Seibel was
instrumental in Mxis business transformation, and further
strengthened the companys position as one of the worlds
leading global aviation maintenance management software
companies. Under Seibel, Mxi expanded both its commercial
and defense businesses, and developed the strongest product
line-up in the industry. He leaves behind a well-established,
growing and profitable business, which he will continue to
support as Mxis Chairman of the Board.
With such great prospects and opportunities ahead of us,
I have decided that now is the right time to step back and
allow a new leader to take the company to the next level,
commented Dave Seibel. Supported by our experienced
senior leadership team, Bill is absolutely the right executive to
deliver exceptional customer value, innovative solutions, and a
long-term product vision.
Mr. Cavitt joins Mxi from American Airlines, where he most
recently served as Vice President Engineering, Performance
Improvement and Quality, based out of the Maintenance
and Engineering base in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In this position,
he oversaw all engineering functions for the airline including
airframe, power plant, components, M&E quality assurance/
inspections, as well as continuous improvement and M&E
training.
Mr. Cavitt joined the airline in August 2008 after 29 years
in the aviation field, including a career with the U.S. Naval
Aviation and Northrop Grumman Corporation. In addition, he
co-owned a technical analysis company focused on providing
aviation-related classified and technical analytical support
to the highest levels in the Department of Defense and
Military Service decision makers. He holds a Master of Science,
Aeronautical Engineering and Avionics degree from the Naval
Postgraduate School, and a Bachelor of Science degree in
Ocean Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy.
With todays announcement, we are confident that Bill
Cavitts proven aviation maintenance executive experience,
together with Dave Seibels ongoing guidance and Board-level
leadership, will position Mxi favorably for continuous growth
and success well into the future, says James Johnston, Partner,
Moelis Capital Partners. The board welcomes Bill to the team,
and is grateful for Daves significant contributions as CEO and
President, and ongoing commitment as Mxi chairman.

CAPE AIR SELECTS MXI TECHNOLOGIES

MAINTENIX SYSTEM AS ITS MRO
STANDARD

A Large U.S. regional airline is fueling strategic growth

through standardized processes, greater integration between
MRO and flight operations
In mid-November 2014 Mxi Technologies announced that
Cape Air the largest and fastest growing independent U.S.
regional airline featuring a mixed fleet of 89 aircraft has
selected the Maintenix system for its enterprise-wide fleet
maintenance management. Recently voted by Cond Nast
Traveler readers as one of the Best Airlines in America, Cape
Air has set its sights on driving greater operational efficiencies
while scaling the business to service new locations. Meeting
these objectives required an MRO solution that could deliver
standardized processes across the maintenance management
chain, and support greater integration with flight operations
to optimize the scheduling of critical revenue flights.
Following a rigorous market review, Cape Air selected
Maintenix Operator Edition as its MRO system standard, set
to deliver automated, mobile-ready MRO functionality across
the airlines engineering, planning, execution and materials
management functions. By reducing reliance on disparate
information systems, Cape Air is looking to more effectively
manage day-to-day operational requirements and meet
ongoing regulatory compliance, while keeping in line with
aggressive strategic growth plans.
Cape Air strives to deliver the safest and most reliable
flight services in the market today. This can only be achieved

AT the beginning of November 2014, Mxi Technologies

and BAE Systems held the inaugural Maintenix Defense User
Group (DUG). Hosted in the United Kingdom by BAE Systems,
the three-day, user-driven event brought together members
of Mxis defense community to share best practices around
the use of the Maintenix software as well as provide a
platform for knowledge transfer around the product.
The event, attended by BAE Systems, Harris Canada, FMV,
the Swedish Air Force, CGI, Saab, Tsunami Tsolutions, and
the Canadian Department of National Defense, allowed
Mxis defense users to discuss their use of the Maintenix
software to address real-world challenges in local and global
sustainment as well as work in partnership to identify product
areas that will provide ongoing business benefit and a
continued competitive advantage.
In addition to delegate presentations, case studies, and
discussions, BAE Systems arranged for a site visit of their
Warton facilities which included a tour of the Typhoon
Final Assembly and a Simulator Experience. An exclusive
networking dinner allowed the group to hear from Nat
Makepeace, a former Royal Air Force pilot and current
BAE Systems test pilot who has achieved the rare feat of
accumulating 5,000 hours in the air flying military jets.
Mxi places a high level of importance on fostering

community among our customer base and events such as

the DUG allow us to maintain an active and collaborative
dialogue with our individual user groups, said Dave Curley,
Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Mxi Technologies.
The Maintenix product is unique in that it is informed by
the experiences and best practices of both defense and
commercial aviation organizations; and it is events such as
this that provide us with the opportunity to hear from our
distinct communities and reaffirm our commitment to serving
all aspects of the market.

ANI AND XPRESS AIR SELECT ALKYM

IN early January 2015, Volartec welcomed two new Alkym

customers to the APAC region. Both are based in Indonesia
and are part of the same group. The MRO company Aero
Nusantara Indonesia (ANI) has selected Alkym to replace
their existing MRO IT solution. At the same time Xpress Air
with their strong links to ANI will also benefit from the fully
integrated solution provided by Volartec.
John Barry, SVP Business Development with Volartec was on
hand to welcome the latest announcement stating ANI has
been a leader in the MRO sector for 15 years in this region
with a great team at the helm. When they began the search
for a replacement MRO IT solution two years ago we were
determined to ensure Alkym was at forefront of their minds.
The enhancements last year specifically in the MRO and
Workshop modules completed the functionality to serve such
clients. This deal makes all that development effort worthwhile.
ANI has elected to select the full suite of Alkym modules and
tools with 18 concurrent users of the system. The unique short
implementation programs delivered by Volartec in this case
will be split in two phases. The program will begin in February
2015 with total on-site time of nine weeks from the Volartec
project team.
Olafur Jonsson, Vice President Maintenance at ANI pointed
towards the ability to get a fully integrated MRO IT solution
within a realistic budget was the cornerstone of our search
criteria. We have our existing solution in place and therefore
understand the complexity involved but needed more
productivity savings moving forward. Our detailed market

American Airlines mechanics with their mobile solution

Mobility for mechanics

Aircraft IT Interviews Blair Gregg, American Airlines Lead on their
M&E tablet and mobility program.

ILOTS HAVE HAD tablets for quite a while now and value the benefits but a big question today is, how
can other areas of the business tap into the benefits of tablet devices to achieve greater mobility? American
Airlines, the biggest of its kind, has already rolled out tablets to mechanics, so earlier this year we went
along to meet Blair Gregg, who served as the Managing Director of Technical Systems Strategy for Maintenance &
Engineering at American Airlines. In this role, he was responsible for technical systems enhancement opportunities
that measure impact M&E performance in dependability, reliability, productivity and cost control. Starting with a
conversation over the coffee we closed with a few direct questions in Q&A style. But before anything else, we wanted
to know why American Airlines believed its mechanics needed mobility.

WHAT MECHANICS NEED TO KNOW

Blair explained that the airline had asked exactly that
question when they sat down with Dallas Forth Worth
(DFW) line mechanics two and a half years ago. The
mechanics offered five reasons, explaining first that
they simply wanted to get to their information and
needed technical data at their fingertips to avoid
running back and forth between the airplane and the
office. Also, they wanted to be able to know if a part is
available to fix the airplane, rather than having to refer
to a minimum equipment list or pushing maintenance
into the night. Furthermore, they needed to know the
status of the airplane what was changed last time
it was in the hangar; and they felt they should know
the current status of the operation. With seventy plus
gates, planes dont always come to the expected gate so
mechanics need real-time visibility on where the plane

WHAT THE TABLET CAN DELIVER

So thats why mechanics need mobility but what about
the other side of the coin, what can mechanics do on
tablets? For this, Blair highlighted a pretty good list of
functions and benefits, explaining mechanics can get to
their manuals using My tasks. Even if theyre sitting in
a fast-food restaurant, the tablet will ring indicating that
they have an assignment and at what gate. On arrival
at the specified gate, the tablet indicates exactly what
has to be done to the airplane as well as what has been
done in the past. The tablet can also acknowledge when
the mechanic is at the plane and tell Ops group that hes
there. He can even use the tablet to delay the boarding
procedure if the floor boards have to be pulled and,
at the end of the job, he can use the tablet to close the
maintenance task and go to the next plane. In short, using
tablets keeps mechanics moving directly from one plane
to the next so they dont lose time going back and forth
getting assignments and information to perform tasks.

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2015 | AIRCRAFT IT MRO | Q&A: AMERICAN AIRLINES | 19

using tablets keeps mechanics

moving directly from one plane to the
next so they dont lose time going back
and forth getting assignments and
information to perform tasks.
Blair added that AA has 1,200 CMMs (component
maintenance manuals) digitized and online so
mechanics can hook into information for multiple
fleets live plus there are offline capabilities.
But over and above the functions and benefits, Blair
wanted to add, Weve come pretty close to perfecting
how youd want a mechanic to use tablets both onand offline. If tech pubs have changed just one word,
or one chapter or the whole book, we can update the
manual as appropriate. The tablets also carry out of
service information; facilitate the chasing of parts and
hold OSP (oil servicing program) information which
is very cool. And whereas, in the old days, some had
to use work cards and calculators which introduced
errors; now this is managed with automation the
mechanic adds two pints of oil to an engine and it
automatically does the calculation to say if its good or
bad; mechanics really like this.

CHALLENGES FOR THE TABLET PROGRAM

Having established why mechanics would want tablets
and what those devices could do for them, we also
wanted to know whether there had been any challenges
and what did the airline learn in the rollout?
Blairs response was that the biggest challenge
is connectivity and he explained, Weve worked
through a lot of connectivity issues. Bearing in mind
that were in some fifty countries around the world,
we have found that international connectivity with
tablets is a whole other ballgame than for domestic
tablets. As a result, we have become experts at buying
tablets outside the country and putting local cellular
cards on the devices. Mechanics in Norita will be
running theirs on GoGoMo whereas in the US its
totally different. We run Sprint and Verizon and
AT&T tablets but havent found one solution that
works perfectly all around. Were constantly moving
things around and trying different options, first
getting good service from one provider, then another
provider works better.
All of Americans tablets are Wi-Fi and cellular
capable because mechanics can go from a concrete
break room under a terminal where Wi-Fi works
and not cellular, then go outside where cellular
works better. And then again, sometimes around a
Boeing 777 cockpit, you just lose signal. All of this
experience drove the airline to adopt supporting
offline capabilities.

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS

Given the range of these challenges and the size of
American, we wondered how the airline goes about
device selection. Blair explained that his team had
worked closely with AAs IT group and gave some
employees a choice of Samsung or iPad. There is no
Windows option yet because were waiting for the
Windows cellular program to be worked out. But
broadly the airline accepts that people just prefer one

device over the other. American has 1,722 tablets

currently deployed around the world of which 1,600
are Samsung tablets and 100 are Apple iPads, running
side-by-side. They started two and a half years ago with
Samsung because at that time the IT organization was
struggling with infrastructure security issues around
iPad. Now the airline is using both and Blair doesnt
mind which is used as long as they do the job. He adds,
Anyway, were running HTML 5 apps, which means

20 | Q&A: AMERICAN AIRLINES | AIRCRAFT IT MRO | FEBRUARY/MARCH 2015

American Airlines mechanics receiving training on their new mobile devices

theyll run on most devices: were system agnostic and were tablet neutral.
User engagement has been the most important aspect of the whole
project at American Airlines. As Blair puts it, Its not about my idea or
managements idea; we take seriously every suggestion from a mechanic
and we do our best to give them what they want. What mechanics like
most about tablets is the speed with which IT can deliver solutions: so AA
didnt sit around and wait for the perfect solution before deploying tablets.
Blairs team worked with Flatirons Solutions and, although the original
solution was clunky, they did a deal that in six months time the airline
wanted certain usability requirements such as a really nice user experience
in which mechanics could use dropdown boxes (mechanics dont like
typing), could touch things and could zoom. And how did that work
out? True to their word, Blair confirmed, within six months Flatirons
Solutions delivered a solution and the mechanics loved it.
Getting information to the mechanics fingertips is now so much easier for
AA than it was two years ago. The airline has moved from a paper world,
where you wonder if the information was revised and if youre in the right
revision (and it could take a week to get there), to todays environment
when the same process takes minutes. Its also only minutes from tech pubs
publishing something before every mechanic around the world has it. If
the mechanic is working offline, the program knows that there has been a
revision and the mechanic must synch up before opening it. The regulators
love that there is built-in protection so that our mechanics do not use the
wrong information. says Blair, adding, Mechanics are giving us their input
and we went from five applications to more than two dozen in less than a
year. Were on version 9 or 10 this year alone and were pushing out revisions
every 30-45 days. Mechanics like the speed; they like that were paying
attention to them.

mechanics treat tools well when the tools are their

tools. We have 1,700 tablets out there today and in two
and a half years, only two tablets have been destroyed.
One was dropped and run over by a truck. The other
was thrown against a wall and broke.
THE BENEFITS AND WHERE NEXT
Before moving on to the Q&A Blair wanted to summarize the benefits and
look to the future to see where the project is going. AA has leadership
that says it makes sense to keep the mechanic on the airplane, rather
than in the break room, with everything they need [on the tablet] to fix
the airplane. he explained. Were going to get more into aircraft health
management (airman web) and getting information from the aircraft in a
mechanic-friendly view. OEM systems are good if youre sitting at a desk.
But we need stuff that works on a tablet, that lets mechanics take fault
isolation codes and get into the AMM (aircraft maintenance manual) and
have every engineering order he could ever want. Were working towards
that right now.

KEY QUESTIONS ABOUT SPECIFIC ISSUES

Clearly American Airlines has thought this through to create a mobile
environment built around the mechanics requirements and processes. But
before we left Blair, there were a few specific questions that we wanted to
address. Working from a list wed prepared earlier, we dealt with these in a
Q&A fashion.

Aircraft IT: Did you face any roadblocks from the FAA?
BLAIR GREGG: We took a different approach, taking Flatirons Solutions
representatives with us to the FAA when we sat down with the CMO
(certificate management office) and explained to them how the tablet
would stop mechanics from having unrevised data. We showed them
what mechanics would see in the tablet and what theyd be able to do: we
got their buy-in and they were appreciative of us sharing it with them.
Most importantly, the [publishing] process has been tightened up. We
know exactly what revision of which manuals is on every one of those
1,700 tablets. The Flatirons Solutions software has a dashboard that tells
us if manuals have been revised or not and we can send mechanics
notifications if they havent [acknowledged receipt].
Aircraft IT: When you provide Wi-Fi, is it corporate American
Airlines Wi-Fi? Do you use public Wi-Fi?
BG: AA builds out Wi-Fi for other systems for other parts of the
company like moving baggage around; and we take advantage of airport
Wi-Fi. If you fly into Dallas, you get free Wi-Fi. Airports use different
cellular companies and we use this as well. [Also] all of our tablets have
cellular paid by the company, which is a requirement for mechanics to do
their jobs.

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2015 | AIRCRAFT IT MRO | Q&A: AMERICAN AIRLINES | 21

Aircraft IT: You said you issue tablets to technicians.

BG: Yes, they take the devices home.
Aircraft IT: Around task cards, do you use
electronic sign off or paper?
BG: Were still paper based. The merger [with US Airways]
will change this but today we are still using paper.

Aircraft IT: Are the tablets issued as a corporate

tool or a personal device?
BG: We initially started treating tablets as a [corporate]
tool: [however] mechanics were hesitant to check them
out they were concerned that Big Brother was
watching them. [And] mechanics treat tools well when
the tools are their tools. We have 1,700 tablets out there
today and in two and a half years, only two tablets have
been destroyed. One was dropped and run over by a
truck. The other was thrown against a wall and broke.
(The employee bought a new one). They are amazingly
rugged. Tablets are $300; the radios that mechanics
carry are $600 and Toughbooks are $4200. So if you
only broke two in two years, thats pretty good.
We put our Samsung devices in an OtterBox case.
When we did the math, we thought theyd break a
lot more than they have. We are not worried about
Skydrol: we keep these tablets at the flight line. These
are mechanics working live flights so chances are
they arent going to drop it in a bucket.
Aircraft IT: Do you worry about theft?
BG: We initially started watching with GPS to see
about loss but mechanics are treating them like their
own tools. GPS will drain battery life so we backed off.
If someone misplaces a tablet, we go on to our mobile
device management and see where its sitting and the
mechanics goes and picks it up. We have recovered
every tablet that has been misplaced.
Aircraft IT: Do you have a hardware refresh rate,
such as a three-year cycle?
BG: Yes, we use a three year cycle. We thought battery
life would be shorter but we think well get three years
out of them.
Aircraft IT: When a mechanic leaves the company,
how do you treat that?
BG: We issue the tablets and mechanics return them to
us when they leave.

Aircraft IT: You said earlier that American gave some employees a
choice of Samsung or iPad. How does that work?
BG: Currently our iPads are only with the management team and arent
with our mechanics yet.
Aircraft IT: Can you shed some light on the return on investment for
the hardware and software?
BG: Weve looked at it in a couple of ways. Previously we had Panasonic
Toughbooks. Now we can buy more devices with a less expensive tablet.
We did not have to do a financial justification beyond knowing well
save at least 10 minutes by keeping the mechanic on the airplane versus
having to go get data.
We werent able to finish our analysis because we changed our
requirements with the FAA. Mechanics are now required to reference
the six-digit reference [number], so we changed the game. We now
have delayed minutes that correspond with the six-digit reference that
previously they didnt have to record. Part of our strategy was to get the
devices out there and get [mechanics] using the tablets before they had
to start using the six-digit reference. We know
fundamentally that the tablets help when
they sign the logbook.

Aircraft IT: What lessons have been learned

regarding acceptance by the technicians?
BG: We found that we were doing really well with
our tablets until the day the pilot showed up with his
iPad. We went from feeling really good to being really
envious. Pilots could get to the internet and we couldnt.
We had to change. This is the number one thing that
changed with mechanics wanting to use tablets when
we gave them unlocked tablets to surf the internet.
We made it clear what the parameters are for use and
weve had no issues. If you want to know what changed
it, give them the internet. In line maintenance, its a
really great day when the mechanic is sitting down
because the plane is flying. But when an airplane needs
attention, we want our mechanics to fix it fast.
Aircraft IT: On the security piece, what does access
look like?
BG: American Airlines has a single access system.
We have to know our employee number and password.
Those are the only things we need to do anything.
Where it gets trickier is going to MyBoeingFleet or
AirbusWorld from the tablet, if were not synchronized
then you may have to know another password. Single
sign-on is the thing mechanics like.
Our time was up and we parted thanking Blair Gregg
for taking the time to share, with Aircraft IT readers,

tablets and mobility for mechanics. n

22 | CASE STUDY: TAP M&E | AIRCRAFT IT MRO | FEBRUARY/MARCH 2015

Achieving visibility
and traceability at TAP M&E
RFID technology offers what an MRO needs but first it needs to be successfully
introduced say Fernando F. Matos, Head of Information Technologies and Carlos
Quinta Head of RFID Competence Center at MEGASIS TAP IT owned department

N THIS ARTICLE, well set out to share our

experience gained from working to introduce RFID
technology in TAPs MRO operation. Readers might
first find it useful to know that TAP is a medium size
airline, based in Portugal and that TAP maintenance and
engineering (M&E) has three maintenance bases. The
main one is in Lisbon at the airlines base while there are
two others in southern Brazil. Last year, TAP flew 10.7
million passengers to 198 destinations with a fleet, at
the time of writing, numbering 77 aircraft, including six
introduced during 2014.
Although TAP is a state owned company, it is
financially self-sufficient and generates its own revenue
which means that there is an onus on the airline to be
efficient. It was bearing this in mind that we started to
look at how we could apply RFID solutions. The first
prompt in this direction was when, in 2007, we had an
engineering customer who wanted to ensure that we
kept their tools separate from TAP M&Es tools; and
so we started to look at the possibilities of RFID which
was then beginning to appear in industrial applications.
The problem was that we had no real knowledge about
the technology and had some difficulty in specifying
the problem that we wanted to address; plus TAP M&E
didnt have a team who could be assigned for that kind
of work.
That said, we did know what problems can occur in
an engineering workshop parts get mislaid, leading
to disruption of work because you dont know in
which workstation the part is being held; that, in turn,
detracts from safety, quality and efficiency which are
all very important matters for an MRO; especially
safety. We thought that RFID could be the answer to

all of these challenges because RFID is about visibility,

physical visibility, tough visibility.
In November 2007, AIRBUS was looking for a
partner to develop an RFID project and we took that
opportunity, by creating a team with them, AIRBUS,
MEGASIS (the TAP-owned IT unit) and TAP M&E.

FIRST PROJECT AND LESSONS LEARNED

This project, MEERA (Mobile Enabled Engine Repair

Application) took around three years to go live: from
negotiating the partnership, business case and proof of
concept, to implementation. Mistakes were made.
The first mistake resulted from a very good business
case validated by an excellent proof of concept which
showed a hugely valuable return on investment.
However, whenever you do a proof of concept, do it
by replicating exactly the normal operation, be it in
human, material or other terms.
We were separated from the real production and,
when we asked them, mechanics suggested that
everything was always put away in its right place
with proper labels so that, when we tried to scan it,
everything would be OK. However, when we went into
production, we discovered that, in reality, a lot of labels
were not written.
Notwithstanding that, by 2012 we were the first MRO
to have a fully integrated and operational application
of RFID to aircraft engine components (see Aircraft
IT volume 1 issue 5 Spring 2012) and we were able
to draw some conclusions from the experience. It had
taken a large investment of around 750,000 and we
had expected to see a return on investment (ROI) of
four times that outlay in one year: that, as it turned

we did know what problems can occur in an engineering workshop parts get
mislaid, leading to disruption of work because you dont know in which workstation
the part is being held; that, in turn, detracts from safety, quality and efficiency which
are all very important .

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2015 | AIRCRAFT IT MRO | CASE STUDY: TAP M&E | 23

we want to consider RFID technology combined with

bar code technology and how both technologies can
deliver visibility and traceability for tools, and ground

we consider the quality assurance of maintenance work as the best foundation

for flight safety. Since the formation of our maintenance unit in 1959, China
Airlines has worked hard to certify staff and operations according to latest safety
regulations and practices.

out, was very, very optimistic. With a new technology

such as RFID, there is a slow learning curve. You have
to tell mechanics that even when they think that they
know where spares and components are, they still
have to take the reader with them. Otherwise, theyll
keep looking for the parts where they used to be and,
sometimes, they wont find them there. Our optimism
had been misplaced.
Similarly with the hardware, the first scanners we
had envisaged at proof of concept stage assumed that
everything would be stacked neatly on the shelves

whereas, in reality, the mechanics put parts onto the rack

in a way that meant that labels were at all sorts of angles.
As a result, we had to buy circular polarization RFID
readers that could cope with this reality and we had to
adapt the system accordingly, which meant even more
cost. So the lesson is, build a portfolio of hardware and
test it intensively. And then there was the old chestnut
of change management. This is a new tool and a new
technology but people need to understand that it cant
solve all of their problems. It will make some processes
more efficient but we need to identify which ones.

So, out of all this, we had to define an RFID strategy

that was aligned to our business processes, architecture
and integration. Its not a separate tool or technology;
but, rather like mobility today, it has to be a part of the
overall MRO maintenance information system. This
is really important. For our strategy, we decided that,
after we had incorporated engine parts into the new
system, we would next go to tools and GSEs (ground
support equipment). Then, because, from 2017, we will
be taking delivery of a new fleet of A350 aircraft with
RFID incorporated in more than 400 parts including

life vests and seats, we will have to align this within our
strategy and what we have already defined. Beyond that
well go to chemical products to check their shelf life.
Then well go on to integrating RFID with our mobility
program in line maintenance.
We learned a lot of lessons from this first project and
we know that we made a lot of mistakes but, as Jazz
trumpeter Miles Davis said, When you hit a wrong
note, its the next note that makes it good or bad. As
with Jazz, we were able to use our wrong notes to create
a great overall outcome.

24 | CASE STUDY: TAP M&E | AIRCRAFT IT MRO | FEBRUARY/MARCH 2015

our tools are all already

barcoded, which is the
easiest thing to do. And
second, it will be quite a
challenge, given that we
have around 20,000 tools,
to decide how many RFID
tag types (form factors)
will be needed to cater for
the hundreds of different
sizes and shapes that we
have
NEXT STEPS AND A STRATEGY
FOR THE FUTURE

Now, having looked at the technology applied to

an engine repair shop, we want to consider RFID
technology combined with bar code technology
and how both technologies can deliver visibility and
traceability for tools, and ground support equipment
(GSE). Putting this in the context of TAP M&E; as an
MRO we have a lot of tools more than half of which
are specific aircraft maintenance tools, the rest being
generic tools and calibrated tools. There are also
numerous GSEs. Our current system, which has been
running over the past six years, is an offline system
running within a PDA covering four tool stores run by
seven store managers. Every tool has a barcode either
on the tool or in its drawer.
GSEs are not controlled and are available for whoever
needs them to complete a job. They take the GSE, do
the job and should then return the GSE to its previous
location but, in most cases, that doesnt happen, so
significant time is spent searching for misplaced GSEs.
For instance, at our Lisbon base tools and GSEs are
constantly moving between the three hangars and
parking zones, a lot of movements; so we need to get
better visibility of these tools and GSEs. Because we
have an offline system which relies on people manually
uploading updates, we have visibility problems. An
example would be where a tool is checked out for a
specific aircraft, and for a specific mechanic, checked
back in to the store and in the meanwhile checked out
again for a different aircraft and mechanic. If the tool
store manager hasnt yet uploaded the information

to the back end system or if its only uploaded every

hour or even at the end of every shift, until that upload
happens, there will be no reliable information regarding
the availability of that tool and all the movements that
have been done.

AN APPROPRIATE SOLUTION FOR GSES

GSEs are used on a self-service basis and we need to

get visibility for the most critical ones, the most needed
and most expensive; plus the ones that we have in small
quantities. Again, we have visibility issues and tracking
issues because we need to know where equipment
is all the time which we cannot manage with any
current system. And, as readers will know, the audit
department can make life very difficult if were not able
to address those issues, especially with tools. So those
are currently our main pain points as far as keeping
track of tools and GSEs are concerned.
Notwithstanding those pain points and requirements,
when we did our cost benefit analysis we realized that it
would be difficult to make a strong business case from
a purely financial point of view; so we needed to take a
different approach. The approach we settled on was to
focus on quality, safety FOD (foreign object damage)
risk mitigation and image when a customer wants
to have a check carried out in your facilities, he will
want to know what tools are being used in an aircraft
and, if you cant answer, you might lose the customer.
Citing those three drivers, we managed to get approval
for our solution.
In the end we decided to use RFID for our GSEs
but not for tools. RFID is a robust technology which

means that we can leave GSEs out in the parking

zones for prolonged periods and still be able to read
the RFID tag. Providing the process is executed the
way it is supposed to be, RFID will deliver real-time
visibility and traceability: and will enable us to perform
a fast inventory and search which is not so easy to
manage with barcodes. Thats why we decided to use
this technology to achieve visibility and traceability
of GSEs. In future, every time somebody wants to
move a GSE between two locations, he will be able to
use the RFID technology to record that movement
in the system, which is not what we do today. And,
using RFID tags with the GSEs and at the locations,
whenever a GSE gets sent to a location, well know
where it is.

AN APPROPRIATE SOLUTION FOR TOOLS

On the other side of the coin, readers might ask why

we wont immediately be using the same technology for
tools. Its a case of horses for courses. First of all, our
tools are all already barcoded, which is the easiest thing
to do. And second, it will be quite a challenge, given
that we have around 20,000 tools, to decide how many
RFID tag types (form factors) will be needed to cater
for the hundreds of different sizes and shapes that we
have. Also, on what tools do we decide to put an RFID
tag: calibrated tools; generic tools? What would be the
rational? It wouldnt also be possible to tag a lot of small
tools as well. Its quite a challenge. And, as weve already
seen, one of the benefits of RFID technology is that it
allows users make a fast inventory and to search for a
specific asset, which we dont do on a regular basis, as

well as search at tool store level because its a controlled

environment where barcode technology works well
its reliable and trustworthy. For these reasons, for the
time being we will continue to work with the way it is
today using barcodes for tools.
In the near future, as an enabler for continuous
improvement processes at aircraft production level , we
plan to bring some specific tools close to the aircraft
calibrated tools and specific aircraft maintenance
tools; those tools that we know well always need for
an A check. When that happens, it will make sense
to use RFID technology because well probably need
to create an inventory and we may need to search for
tools. But, at present, tools are managed in a controlled
environment within the tool stores and, just for
checking-in and checking-out tools, we dont need
RFID technology.
One thing of which weve had to take account is
that in order to get real-time visibility with RFID
technology you need a wireless infrastructure you
cant use an offline solution such as the one that
we have today. So we are going to use a wireless
infrastructure and a mobile solution to record the
movements of GSEs and tools. As part of the overall
system architecture We are going to use a back office
solution as well with the information recorded in the
PDA so that management has immediate visibility of all
tools and GSEs. In summary, we will use a combination
of bar code technology for tools and passive RFID
technology for GSEs, plus the new mobile and wireless
architecture to solve our current problems about
visibility and traceability of tools.

The top five key Civil Aviation MRO

trends to watch out for in 2015
Espen Olsen, European Director for Aerospace & Defence at IFS puts on his Google glasses and

Maintenance at-the-asset will become the expected norm, with airline maintenance
crews equipped with essential mobile apps to access relevant information at the time
of need, rather than having to take the long walk to the back office or standing in line
to access the terminal

ITH EVERY NEW Year it is traditional to

take a moment to look forward and consider
what the year ahead will hold for us. This is
particularly pertinent in a fast moving and technologically
critical sector such as MRO IT. So Ive looked at what
is happening and used the information available today,
plus mine and my colleagues experience in the sector, to
predict what 2015 holds for civil aviation MRO IT and, in
particular, what five big trends will change or contribute
to the way we work in the year ahead.
1. MOBILE COMES OF AGE WITH MAINTENANCE
AT-THE-ASSET
Weve talked about it a lot but 2015 will be the year
when mobile technology is going to have a seriously
huge effect within aviation MRO. 2015 will see
significant strides in the integration of mobile apps as
part of a full Information System (IS) across all MRO
operations.
Maintenance at-the-asset will become the expected
norm, with airline maintenance crews equipped with
essential mobile apps to access relevant information at
the time of need, rather than having to take the long
walk to the back office or standing in line to access
the terminal to get the relevant information. But this
new generation of mobile devices will have apps that
are targeted on maximizing effectiveness, minimizing
user overhead but avoiding complexity in this complex
operating environment.
2. FIRST GLIMPSES OF ROI FROM ADDITIVE
MANUFACTURING
It has been widely predicted that additive
manufacturing or 3D printing will become
ubiquitous within the aerospace and defense (A&D)
industry. Indeed A&D is already a huge trend setter in
terms of adopting additive manufacturing, contributing
10.2% to the industrys $2.2 billion1 global revenue in

2012; and all indications are that this will continue to

grow. Rolls-Royce and General Electric have already
announced2 that they plan to produce parts for aviation
engines that are lighter and faster to produce through
additive manufacturing.
In 2014 we saw the huge potential for this technology
in aviation. I believe that, in 2015, as a recent Deloitte
University Press3 report highlighted, additive
manufacturing will really show its worth in terms of
reducing material costs, decreasing labor content, and
increasing availability of parts at point of use, having a
dramatic impact on the supply chain. We will start to
see real RoI (return on investment).
3. A REAL BUSINESS NEED FOR WEARABLE
TECHNOLOGY
In 2014, wearables promised much but delivered little
in terms of practicalities. Gartner has predicted that the
wearable market will be worth $10 billion by 20164 so if
this respected analyst group is right, things need to get
a shift on in 2015.
In civil aviation, the business need is there and
crying out for wearable technology. Witness the
example of Japan Airlines with its use of Google
Glass in the maintenance process5. The glasses are
worn by engineers working around the plane on the
tarmac. Images of the aircraft are sent to maintenance
specialists for assessment who then feed any issues
they see back to the engineer on the ground. Work is
completed promptly, can be assessed in real time and
all information is recorded to assess further issues
down the line.
So forget the trendy aspect of wearable technology
its potential to reduce complexity and workload
for aviation operators is a clear business benefit. If the
industry gets it right, and I believe it will, 2015 will
see the major and widespread use of wearables in civil
aviation become a practical reality.

In 2015 the civil aviation industry will and must tackle big data head on. In particular,
I think, in using big data for Predictive Analysis. By providing key data around asset
failures, this can then be integrated into logistics systems

IT holds the key. A new generation of modular Information System (IS) solutions are
available that will allow these smaller Tier 2 players to easily and quickly increase
or change their production processes, show more transparency in their production
controls, and give instant visibility of their margins.
4. BIG DATA HOLDS THE KEY TO PREDICTING THE
FUTURE
Big data is a concept that has been around for longer
than I can remember, but unlocking its secrets has still
to be tackled.
In civil aviation theres huge potential for using the
secrets of data to enable everything from predictive
analytics to greater inventory optimization, better
monitoring of usage patterns and the essential tracking
and analyzing the health of equipment in real-time. But
so far there has been little in the way of answers for its
key uses, or more importantly, the means of identifying
which data is useful, and which is not.
In 2015 the civil aviation industry will and must
tackle big data head on. In particular, I think, in using
big data for Predictive Analysis. By providing key data
around asset failures, this can then be integrated into
logistics systems to help inform and improve future
designs, in order to optimize usage and lower the total
lifecycle cost.

will be forced to radically overhaul their operating

costs while driving innovation in order to protect
relationships with their major OEM customers.
IT holds the key. A new generation of modular
Information System (IS) solutions are available that will
allow these smaller Tier 2 players to easily and quickly
increase or change their production processes, show
more transparency in their production controls, and
give instant visibility of their margins.
Modularity means they can pick and mix the
applications to meet their particular points of need and,
to avoid the expenses traditionally associated with full
blown ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems,
they can even opt for an OPEX (operating expenses)
rather than a CAPEX (capital expenditure) model by
deploying through the cloud.
Whatever they decide, they need to build a
springboard for the future, and innovation is a must. So
the pressure is on. n

5. SMALLER VENDORS NEED TO INNOVATE

The unprecedented numbers of commercial aircraft
being produced as the industry grows at 4.7 per cent
annually coupled with an ever increasing demand
for more affordable products and greater reliability
has seen an acceleration of a new trend in the aerospace
supply chain. Companies at the top of the supply chain
are shifting responsibilities for increased productivity
and innovation to their smaller second tier suppliers to
absorb the continuing price pressures from end-user
customers. This means that in 2015, smaller vendors

How I see IT
2015: The year we
(finally) go mobile
Paul Saunders, Solution Manager, Flatirons Solutions writes

although very early adopters

wisely chose limited use cases, such
as ordering parts or reading a manual,
as their starting point for mobility,
the next wave of adoption is being
driven by more fundamental and
sweeping business goals that are being
implemented on an almost enterprisewide level.

IS 2015 going to be the year when mobile IT finally becomes ubiquitous

for airlines and MROs? To be fair, many of our colleagues have been
mobile for a number of years already; but I mean mobile, in the post-PC,
iPad era sense of the word.
It seems a long time that Ive been working with mechanics and
engineers who had access to information systems at the aircraft from
within the hangar or on the line. I remember installing wireless networks
in an engine workshop as far back as 2001, which allowed mechanics
to roam around the work environment following their engine as it
moved from tear-down to build and on to test without having to log
off from one computer to another but this use case wouldnt really be
classified as a mobility project in the way that we understand it today.
The hardware, software and utilities that accompanied Windows XP back
in the day bear little resemblance to a mobility project that we would
recognize today.
Ive often spoken about the advent of the iPad as being the catalyst
for the revolution of mobile enterprise. The availability of wireless
networks, the quality of business software in terms of user experience,
the choice and performance of hardware are all largely thanks to the
rise of consumer mobility and the elevated expectations of users. The
days of connecting to the same old business software via some clunky
Citrix client on out-dated hardware is at an end. Now software vendors
have woken up to the fact that mobility is not a passing fad, and they
understand that they need to support mobile use cases as a cost of
doing business.
Interestingly, I have noticed that although very early adopters wisely
chose limited use cases, such as ordering parts or reading a manual,

as their starting point for mobility, the next wave of adoption is being
driven by more fundamental and sweeping business goals that are being
implemented on an almost enterprise-wide level. The desire to go totally
paperless, or to embrace the internet of things, is driving a leap in user
adoption from projects with from a few hundred users, as per some of
the pioneers of mobile technology, to several thousand users at a time
with several tier one airlines having projects in the pipeline.
There is also still a real mix of technologies and approaches being
adopted. Some people have predicted that the iPad has had its day, with
many next-generation implementations favouring the latest batch of
Windows tablets. Windows has indeed enjoyed resurgence in the Flight
Ops world, with some early adopters of the iPad even contemplating
switching back to Windows devices. But I have seen evidence of
an Apple renaissance in aerospace being driven by engineering
implementations. There is a mixture of commercial off-the-shelf solutions
and home spun applications to tackle the various use cases that MRO
and engineering users are posing for us technologists with no one size
fits all when it comes to development approach. HTML and native apps
are being blended in a mobile ecosystem where the user doesnt care
how it works they only care that it just works.
I think 2015 is going to be an exciting year for aerospace MRO IT. I think
its going to be the year when we stop worrying about whether mobility
is a good idea or not. Its going to be the year when we just crack on and
get mobility working. Or at least, thats how I see IT.

A new idea from Aircraft IT you ask the questions and well source the answers
Readers of Aircraft IT and visitors to the Aircraft IT Website often send in questions. We thought we would share
the best of these with you, our readers, so weve asked long-standing Aircraft IT contributor, Michael Wm Denis, to
undertake a fresh new contribution in which he answers your questions about MRO IT. So if you have a burning
question regarding all things M&E / MRO IT or a current project, send your question for Michael to c/o
clara@aircraftit.com and we may feature it in the next issue. The question asker (as below) will remain anonymous.

Ask an expert
Question, from a large African airline: I just want to
know what it takes to go in to paperless environment.
Answer: It Takes a Village to Go Paperless.
Michael Wm. Denis, President,
Aviation Wikinomics, Inc,
Independent advisor,
author and speaker.
With twenty-seven years experience in
aviation, aerospace, defense, software and
high-tech industries, Michael has held
positions of responsibility across diverse
functions including corporate strategy,
market analysis, scenario planning, mergers
and acquisitions, enterprise architecture,
technology implementation and process reengineering. He founded the Service Lifecycle
Management (SLM) Forum for the global open
mass collaboration of industry issues, with over
6000 members. Michael is currently focusing
his practice on servitization strategies and
collaborative outsourcing business models
combined with disruptive technologies.

N 1996, THEN First Lady, Hillary Rodham Clinton wrote a book and
made an infamous statement, It takes a village to raise a child. The title
of her book is attributed to an ancient African proverb roughly translated
into English. Both the proverb and Mrs. Clintons book advocate that a
childs upbringing and both individual and societal success is attributable to
more than just ones family.
I often get asked what it takes for an
airline or maintenance organization to
achieve paperless operations. Hopefully
my answer that it takes a village will be
less controversial than Mrs. Clintons.
To answer the what it takes question
requires answering several more detailed
questions which are often specific to an
organizations business model:
What is the scope of paperless operations?
What is the value of achieving paperless operations?
What entities are involved in delivering and operating paperless
operations?
What are the regulatory requirements of paperless operations?
What technology is needed to achieve paperless operations?
What is the best method to start and complete a paperless
transformation?

THE SCOPE OF PAPERLESS OPERATIONS

Before one can define the value, processes, regulations, internal and
external participants, or anything else, the scope of how paperless the
organization currently is and desires to be must be defined, documented
and agreed upon.
Most technical reference documentation comes in electronic format,
including AMM, AIPC, MEL, EMM, TSM / FRM / FIM, SRM, CMM,
CRM, eieioM. This statement immediately identifies the first scope issue

the differences in content data format. Technically, a pdf is an electronic digital document
and therefore meets some capability maturity level for being paperless. But as everyone knows,
even the most robust pdf is not supportive of full paperless operations relative to XML content
management. Normally, airlines and MROs are looking to include routine tasks, authorized
release certificates, non-routine tasks and repairs, and logbooks in their scope for achieving
paperless operations as this constitutes the bulk of paper documentation that negatively
impacts effective and efficient operations.
The value of defining scope becomes obvious, since each of the documents listed above have
regulatory, intra-organizational, technological, return on invested capital (ROIC), business to
business, training and sequencing impacts. For instance, MEL/MMEL and aircraft logbooks
would require flight operations coordination, whereas routine task cards are wholly under the
control of the maintenance department.

NEWS FLASH YOU CANT BE PAPERLESS IF YOU ARENT MOBILE.

WHETHER the device of choice is a phone, tablet, laptop or kiosk, paperless means delivering
information and content at the point of execution. And since the point of execution is always
mobile and often times out of WiFi or cellular connectivity, asynchronous operations are a
requirement.

As a result of scoping the degree of what the organization wants to move to a paperless
environment, the who which entities will be involved is readily defined. At a minimum,
there will be coordination with your OEMs, regulator, MRO providers, lessors, technology
providers, and internally with operations, IT and finance.

PUTTING A VALUE ON GOING PAPERLESS

The value proposition for moving to paperless operations is one of the highest in the industry
and building the business case is straight forward. Ive seen sufficient ROIC based solely on
physical paper cost reductions. If we then add in labour productivity, turn time reduction,
supply chain efficiency, technical dispatch rate improvement, lease return savings and
regulatory compliance, getting an initial and final approved budget is easy. Obviously this is a
scaling function, that is, more aircraft and a longer period results in higher returns. Planned
properly, even small airlines can achieve good results in short time periods.

There are multiple systems involved in getting to paperless. A common mistake

operators make is trying to save capital investments by having software that isnt
designed to perform a certain capability do those things that it wasnt designed to do.
WHAT ENTITIES ARE INVOLVED?

And dont forget that other entities get a return on

your investment too. This includes third party MRO
providers, lessors and OEMs. A paperless solution can
drive down their costs of operations; so the question
should be how much they are willing to invest in your
initiative. If the answer is nothing, then maybe its
time to find a new MRO provider or lessor! And with
respect to OEMs, operational data is very valuable;
dont share it unless there is a quid pro quo.

REGULATIONS AND THE REGULATOR

Regulatory guidance for acceptable means of

compliance for electronic manuals, electronic
recordkeeping systems and electronic signatures is
given in FAA AC 120-78 (dtd 2002) and TC AC 571006. Depending upon scope, when you get to making
the flight deck paperless the following are governing
regulations: FAA AC 120-76C (re-written in 2014),
AC 120-64, AC 120-74, or EC 859/2008, EC 956/2012,
AMC 20-25/2013 and JAA TGL 36.
Bringing your regulator into your solution village
needs to be properly timed. Too early in the process
and it will appear that you dont know what you are
doing, whereas, too late in the process and you may
have to change your solution, which will result in
delays and cost overruns.
The technology that makes paperless possible
So this brings us to the technology side of the village.
Dont be afraid of IT but also dont let a business
initiative turn into an IT led project. IT departments
are well trained in Enterprise Architecture (EA). EA
encompasses four domains: Business Architecture,
Solutions Architecture, Data Architecture and
Technology Architecture.
By assigning the right people to each of these
architectural domains, your teams will move
expeditiously and coordinate more efficiently in
building the village. Of the four architectures, the one
that gets the least attention but is the most critical
to both getting to a successful solution and getting
regulatory approval is Data Architecture.
Data Data Data, there are multiple data standards
(iSpec2200, S1000D), multiple data formats (manuals,
tasks, forms), multiple data hand-offs / integrations,
so the sooner you come to the realization that no one
in the industry has a single solution to the data (and
content) interoperability issue, the better.

Document Document Document, if you can draw

a line from receiving authoritative data, normally in the
form of content, through each system and application,
to final airworthiness records, then not only are you
assured of getting a successful solution, your regulators
will be assured too.

THE PATH TO YOUR PAPERLESS WORK

ENVIRONMENT

or

There are multiple systems involved in getting to

paperless. A common mistake operators make is trying
to save capital investments by having software that
isnt designed to perform a certain capability do those
things that it wasnt designed to do. The most common
of these mistakes is attempting to have an MRO IT
system manage content.

NEWS FLASH: MRO IT SYSTEMS ARE

NOT CMS IT SYSTEMS

LET me be blunt here there is a fundamental difference

between maintenance management and logistics systems
(MRO) and content management systems (CMS). In my 27
years of experience, Ive yet to see a MRO IT system parse
and reconcile XML schema documents.

There are a lot of partial solutions on the market from

different OEMs, software vendors, and airlines that
have gotten into the software business. Take a bit of
time to play the field, see what each of them have to
offer and meet with their customers; this is the best
indication of the quality of their products and services.
Also invest a little time and money in an independent
advisor who isnt selling software or a solution.
Were all intelligent and experienced engineers or
technologists, so given enough time and money we can
figure this out right?
Wrong an aviation enterprise architect with hands
on experience in paperless mobile MRO solutions
will more than pay for their costs. If nothing else,
their knowledge of solutions pricing and contract
negotiations will return dividends.
So, what does it take to go paperless?
It takes a village that is unique to your operations and
business model. n

growth is primarily driven from a

need by our clients for increased levels
of external resource support, as part of
business improvement initiatives and
cost reduction objectives.

Flexible MRO IT Systems

Meeting the stringent demands of CAMOs requires some specific software
capabilities, explains Mark Rogers, Commercial Manager at McLarens Aviation

CLARENS AVIATION (FORMERLY

Airclaims), is a leading aviation loss adjusting
business serving the global insurance market.
Whilst claims management is around 80% of the
business, our Risk and Asset Management division
continues to grow extensively year on year. This growth
is primarily driven from a need by our clients for
increased levels of external resource support, as part of
business improvement initiatives and cost reduction
objectives. Our clients include aircraft operators,
lessors, financiers and Oil, Gas and Mining companies.
They turn to us for a number of solutions, including
Pre-Purchase inspections / valuations, lease reviews,
aircraft delivery / redelivery / transition management,

Continuing Airworthiness Management services and

independent operational and technical risk audits.
McLarens Aviation is a Continuing Airworthiness
Management Organization (CAMO) approved by the
European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in accordance
with Part M, Subpart G and I (ARC) requirements.
We are approved to provide these services on over 30
different aircraft types from the major manufacturers
and offer a full suite of CAMO services to support
private aircraft owners, commercial operators, financiers
and leasing companies.
The range of aircraft and the scope of regulation
grow ever more complex, some aspects of flying and
maintaining commercial aircraft are increasingly

demanding, therefore, appropriately trained and

approved personnel together with suitable maintenance
control software, is essential in providing safe, efficient
and compliant airworthiness management. In this
article, we will review the requirements of a CAMO and
the Commsoft OASES I.T system.

CAMO REQUIREMENT

Why do we need CAMO? The short answer is EU

regulation and compliance. However, regulation aside,
the goal is to safely maintain, monitor and control
the serviceability and airworthiness of an aircraft.
The operational and maintenance life of an aircraft
is subject to strict regulation, therefore, a suitable
maintenance control platform, that is user friendly,
reactive and helps to ensure that all the mandatory,
essential, routine and regulatory elements of an aircraft
life are managed is essential.

COMMSOFT OASES OVERVIEW

To support McLarens Aviation CAMO function, we

elected to acquire Commsofts OASES (Open Aviation
Strategic Engineering System) package after a thorough

review of market options, as the solution was the

closest to meet our overall needs particularly in terms
of functionality and scalability given our consultancy
role, with many aircraft transitioning on and off of our
CAMO at any one time. OASES is considered to be a
highly effective aviation engineering and maintenance
system. Easy to use with a wealth of features, it
fully meets the needs of both major airlines and
independent CAMO organizations. A key function of
the OASES package is that it comprehensively supports
the need for compliance management. There are a
number of essential requirements and regulations that
users need to follow to maintain the airworthiness
of an aircraft in a controlled environment. OASES
supports this requirement and is able to control of all
aspects of maintaining the airworthiness of aircraft,
from the daily check through to the base maintenance
input and airworthiness directives and service
bulletin control. The control and monitoring of nonmandatory information, modifications and repairs is
also processed and managed as part of the integrated
functions.
In addition to the airworthiness management elements,
OASES has a comprehensive inventory, stores and
procurement portal, which can be used as part of a fully
auditable and effective business process tool.
An illustration of I.T platform compliance, Control and
Auditing is demonstrated in figure 1 below:

COMMSOFT OASES IN ACTION

A number of our CAMO team have used OASES in

previous roles with airlines such as British Midland
International (BMI), BA City Flyer and BAe Systems.
McLarens Aviation has over 5 years experience
with OASES and we have been impressed with the
multifunctional nature and ease with which we can
control, access and run reports. The ability to search
data by a variety of fields such as part number, aircraft
type, fleet, ATA chapter and produce relevant records
confirms the usability of the product.

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2015 | AIRCRAFT IT MRO | CASE STUDY: MCLARENS | 37

Figure 1

As a full service technical

consultancy, the OASES package
offers us a cost-effective lifecycle
management tool that interacts and
supports the needs of our lessor and
lessee sector clients and the core
services that we provide. (see fig. 2).
The initial stages of data entry
are key; validating and loading
the Approved Maintenance
Programs (AMP). Our CAMO
team need to control, monitor
and manage an extensive amount
of forecasting data that includes,
Airworthiness Directives (AD)
and Service Bulletins (SB). The
data process cycle continues
through to repair and modification
management, technical log data
input and repetitive / deferred
defect management. This process
fully supports the need to set up
a reliability reporting process
through the PIREPS , hence
completing the system cycle.

MEGA MALDIVES;
CONTINUING AIRWORTHINESS
MANAGEMENT
BOEING 757 AND 767s.

Figure 2

There are always the key issues of safety, therefore, pilot reporting systems
(PIREPS) is a very useful mechanism which allows users to set their
parameters to highlight any technical or maintenance issues occurring and
(or) recurring.
Importantly, the system works in real-time and promotes a proactive rather
than reactive approach to airworthiness oversight. Having managed aircraft
based in Asia, Eastern Europe and South America, the ability to remotely
manage customer fleets using high speed internet for real-time processing
has been key to our business and the needs of our customers.

Following the award of a two year

contract to serve MEGA Maldives
Airlines as their approved CAMO,
McLarens Aviation supported
the airline through their start-up
process, inspecting aircraft and
performing a number of due
diligence assignments to assist
with the aircraft induction process.
MEGA Maldives with their
operational HQ based in Mal,
Maldives illustrated how flexible
and capable the OASES I.T system
design is. With minimal notice
we were able to quickly load the
required data and go live to manage
the airworthiness of one Boeing
757 and two 767s remotely from
our London office.

Why do we need CAMO? The short answer is EU regulation and compliance. However,
regulation aside, the goal is to safely maintain, monitor and control the serviceability
and airworthiness of an aircraft.

McLarens Aviation supported them through the airline start-up process, inspecting
aircraft and performing a number of due diligence assignments to assist them
through the induction process.

Moving forward two years, we have since trained and supported the airline
to the extent where they feel confident to run their own OASES package and
our role has evolved to be on call support rather than remotely managing
the whole airworthiness process, which is a typical transitional process for
many start-up airlines.
Its a key attribute of our business to be in a position to help clients at the
very start of their operation and to have a system that allows us to train the
airlines own team during the start-up phase, so that we can hand-over and
move to a more support orientated role when appropriate and to help with

appeal to our users and our clients operational requirements alike. One
particular unique feature that we found of significant value was the ability
to hold any revisions to AMPs in draft form until approval is received,
thereafter, they can go live in the system with just one click.
The system also allows LLP (Life Limited Part) control, whilst major parts
and sub-assemblies can be easily installed or removed from the system,
helping to organize maintenance and repairs in advance of any needs arising.
A good maintenance control system should of course help reduce workload,
mitigate errors and add value. Weve found that the OASES system helps to
highlight essential matters in areas that otherwise could have a serious and
costly effect, particularly with AD, SB reporting.
In our experience, the OASES system design compliments the CAMO
process well, incorporating key elements that support the relationship
between various inputs and in the airworthiness management of an
aircraft. We maintain a separate secure database for each airline client, thus
protecting and ensuring client confidentiality. OASES has proven to be a
reliable and stable system with added value capabilities such as the ability
to attach documents, vary printing and download formats. The system is
well-structured for efficient data input, reducing the need for hard copy
paperwork. In summary, OASES has proved to be a very versatile solution
to support our needs and those of our clients, whilst making a valued
contribution to our business and competitive position. n

Dinakara Nagalla: President & CEO, EmpowerMX

on the aerospace, defense, travel and transportation industries.

Dinakara Nagalla has more than 16 years in IT management focused
Airline Solutions before joining EmpowerMX.
He held Several technology management positions at EDS and Sabre

multi-discipline solution teams. He has published several white papers

AircraftIT: Your name, your job title and the name

of the business?
DINAKARA NAGALLA: Dinakara Nagalla, President
& CEO, EmpowerMX.
AircraftIT: How did EmpowerMX get started?
DN: An aircraft maintenance production control
supervisor employed by Northwest Airlines (NWA)
in the 1990s built a software program to help him
manage his daily workflow. After NWA directed
him to remove this software because it had not
been approved/purchased by NWA/IT, he resigned
from NWA and, along with other fellow Northwest
personnel, started this company funded by an
economic development company in Duluth, Minnesota
(MN).
AircraftIT: What is the attraction of aircraft MRO
related IT?
DN: To date, next generation IT has not been widely
adopted in the aviation industry. The majority of
airlines are running 30 year old systems or client
server technologies built in the 1990s. Increased
regulatory requirements, newer aircraft models and
outsourcing of maintenance to multiple vendors only
made the opportunity bigger. There are enormous
savings to be realized for airlines implementing the
right technology and achieving visibility across a
broad spectrum of suppliers and providers. Most of
the popular systems are library systems with little or
no intelligence and are not suitable for new generation
mobile devices powered by iPad or Android. This,
in turn, provides an opportunity for companies like
EmpowerMX to bring the software and serve the
content to the technicians work site.

AircraftIT: What is the guiding business principle

that drives EmpowerMX?
DN: To provide our customers with products and
services designed to significantly reduce the cost of
their operation, reduce exposure to undesirable human
factors, and improve safety.
AircraftIT: What has been EmpowerMXs greatest
IT achievement to date and why?
DN: EmpowerMX has built its suite of software
modules, catering to key business functions of M&E,
to be able to be run independently of each other or to
run like a single unit of software instead of an all or
nothing model which seems to be followed by every
other software vendor in this industry. This gives the
customer an option to deploy one module at a time
without disrupting their operation or going through
multi-year deployments. EmpowerMX software also
runs equally well on desktop computers and 10 tablet
devices like iPad or Android devices, with support to
all of the major browser platforms and with zero foot
print on the client.
AircraftIT: What has been EmpowerMXs greatest
business achievement to date and why?
DN: Earning the business-to-business trust and respect
of the worlds most prestigious airlines through dogged
determination, hard work, patience and perseverance
AircraftIT: What have been EmpowerMXs
disappointments and what have you learned from
them?
DN: Target customers stop supporting our business
when economic downturns hit the airline industry.
Because of this, weve learned to diversify our business

With the advent of next generation native touch operating systems, a new crop of
applications will wipe out data intensive, monolithic and unintelligent software.
offerings and have aggressively marketed the cost
savings potential customers can immediately realize by
implementing EmpowerMX products or services.

AircraftIT: In a sentence, how would you

summarize what EmpowerMX does for aircraft
MRO customers?
DN: EmpowerMX products and consulting services
immediately help MRO and airline/military M&E
departments to minimize aircraft out-of-service
time while significantly reducing the cost of their
operation and exposure to human factors; thus helping
to achieve improved safety, quality, and financial
objectives.
AircraftIT: What is new on EmpowerMXs
development horizon?
DN: During 2014 we deployed the mobile workshop
application which has already driven significant savings
to our customers. This mobile solution will continue
to be developed during 2015 with much focus on the
mobile ELB and Line Manager. I believe 2015 will be
remembered as the year our customers went mobile.
Other enhancements to existing FleetCycle modules
continue to be developed, some of these include
increased integrations with systems containing process
touch points to enable seamless user experience,

strategic planning of maintenance requirements

and manpower, project critical path with intelligent
task assignments, and visibility of record data to the
system.

AircraftIT: What will be the next big thing in

MRO Aviation IT?
DN: Unquestionably, technology that can keep the
technician hooked on to his real job vs. moving to
a legacy desktop to stare at main frame screens and
carrying paper. With the advent of next generation
native touch operating systems, a new crop of
applications will wipe out data intensive, monolithic
and unintelligent software. It will also be possible to
drive value from the large amounts of data that have
been captured and continue to be captured daily. We
can help our customers achieve the value they are
looking for from their data sets.
AircraftIT: What do you want your customers to
say about EmpowerMX?
DN: Without EmpowerMX supporting our production
needs, it would be impossible for us to achieve the
lean/Six-Sigma-based business efficiencies we now
count on to deliver on-time excellence daily.
AircraftIT: Dinakara Nagalla , thank you for your
time.

Wearable Devices
The New Era of Hands
Free Computing
Suresh Subramanian, Principal Consultant-Aviation of Ramco
explains how wearable devices will contribute towards a
connected Aviation IT world.

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2015 | AIRCRAFT IT MRO | WHITE PAPER: RAMCO | 41

wearable technology is already in

and here to stay. So, while some might
wish to stand on the sidelines mocking
a small (in the scheme of things)
setback for Google Glass, others are
already thinking, not just about how
wearable technology will change the
way we do things in the future, but also
how the wearable technology of today
can be applied right now

OBILITY HAS BEEN the recent buzzword in

the aviation industry and in keeping with this
trend, we at Ramco, have started to look to
the mobile future; including leveraging next-generation
wearable devices, in order to make hands-free
maintenance operations a reality. Our objective is the
development of mobile MRO solutions using nextgeneration wearable devices, such as Google Glass and
Smart Watch.

In a world increasingly driven by technology, the

aviation industry is witnessing a paradigm shift in
ways of working and we believe that a move to these
new devices will serve to be a useful tool for aircraft
mechanics, helping them to be more productive.
Most of our line maintenance functions are now
made available on wearable devices, helping the
line maintenance manager and engineer check the
inventory at the touch of their Google Glass, plus,
perform other line maintenance functions (see below).
However, before we go any further into this subject,
we need to address a current and misplaced concern
regarding one of the devices themselves.

GOOGLE PLANS TO DISCONTINUE

SALE OF GOOGLE GLASS

This headline from an article in the Deccan Chronicle,

dated 18th January, might seem an odd way to open
a white paper on the subject of wearable technology.
However, as that or something similar, may well be the
latest headline that readers have seen on the subject,
it makes sense to deal with it right away. Its true as
far as it goes, but the story it introduces is a lot less
apocalyptic and a lot more positive when it continues
to explain that while, Google has announced that
it will no longer sell its experimental first version of
Glass the Glass project would not be scrapped,
with development continuing [and] Although

Google Glass wont be available to individuals after

January 19th, businesses and developers will still be
able to purchase the product. Google Glass is a type
of wearable technology with an optical head-mounted
display (OHMD).
In a similarly balanced vein, Seamus Condron writing
on the PC Mag website on 20th January explained
that, while in the consumer market, It was nearly
impossible to accept any benefits of such a device,
simply because the mere appearance of it was so
polarizing. In the workplace, Google Glass proved to
be a much more worthy tool in specialized industries

such as medicine, where doctors used it during

surgical procedures. Its also been a hit in warehouse
environments, dramatically improving how workers
can access information while keeping both hands
free That sounds like a familiar environment for
anybody engaged in aircraft MRO.
Wearable technology is here to stay and to use
And, of course, the headsets with the funny little
prism in front of the eye are not the only form of
wearable technology available. People have been
wearing Bluetooth earpieces for their mobile phones
for some time and, from smart watches to wristband
pedometers, audio headsets, smart materials and
RFID fitted anything, as well as OHMDs, wearable
technology is already in and here to stay. So, while
some might wish to stand on the sidelines mocking
a small (in the scheme of things) setback for Google
Glass, others are already thinking, not just about how
wearable technology will change the way we do things
in the future, but also how the wearable technology
of today can be applied right now to improve the way
things are done, in increasingly complex and prescribed
activities such as aircraft M&E/MRO. It was from this
positive approach that we have taken our cue at Ramco
in developing wearable device related solutions, as a
part of the wider connected workplace.
Recent developments will create a paradigm shift in
the way users interact with information and, while

in theory, the wearable market consists of a range of devices (see above).

Ramco based its initial developments on Smart Watches. The ability of
these devices to seamlessly connect to other devices, such as mobile phones
and iPads, platforms in which MRO IT solutions already run, acted as the
prime mover towards investing in the wearable device revolution. Lets look
at an example of how a wearable device, such as a smart watch, can prove
handy while an organization attempts to improve the productivity of its
workforce, a perennial challenge in Aviation MRO, today.

USING A SMART WATCH SOLUTION TO HELP WITH

SCHEDULES AND APPROVALS

Discrepancies, or Purchase Orders

which can be facilitated using
the device, within a few clicks of
a button. We have developed a
feature for the Smart Watch that
we call Review Defects, which
allows the mechanic to view the
statuses of all the defects allocated
to him at an aircraft or at a package
level and he can either defer it or
complete it. An inherent benefit of
such innovations is their ability to
facilitate hands-free computing for
those who perform physical tasks,
yet require information in realtime. Using this, a mechanic has
the ability to interact with systems
while still, physically, using both
his hands to do the work, without
any interruptions.

GOOGLE GLASS OFFERS A

USEFUL CAPABILITY FOR MRO

One routine activity for every mechanic, working in a hangar environment,

is the need to accurately record and track his attendance and time spent,
working on the tasks assigned to him. Currently, this is done using
a system in which multiple employees log-in and log-out of tasks, a
laborious process if there are limited systems available for access in a
hangar, if the system is kept some way away from the aircraft or, worse
still, if the whole process has to be done on paper. The end result is the
unfavorable consequence of AMEs (aircraft maintenance engineers) or
their supervisors spending time entering data taking a part of their focus
away from the core job of reducing maintenance downtimes. In an age of
connected devices, why should the hangar environment be disconnected
in this way?
Our wearable device based approach, uses a Pebble device, which runs
apps if connected to an iPhone or an Android device and ensures that
tasks allocated against mechanics the progress of which is tracked in
real time are visible on their wrist-worn devices. The screen displays the
Package Reference #, the Aircraft Reg# and Component ID against which
maintenance is being done and the Task ID and description. Signing in and
out of tasks is now reduced to a few clicks on the screen, while accuracy is
still maintained. The timesheet recording feature allows the mechanic to
sign in and sign off a task using his handy tool. The task details seamlessly
integrate with Ramcos M&E system and enables real time calculation of
labor hours, thereby speeding up the job costing process.
A similar example might be that of approving transactions such as

Looking at the context of aircraft

MRO, there are a number of
functions for which a device
such as Google Glass can be
applied to add intelligence and
hands-free capability to the way
a task is completed. For instance,
a mechanic can perform a
component removal, attachment
or replacement by scanning the
QR code of the part, with just a
swipe of the glass. In a wider sense,
the mechanic can view the defects
allocated to him against an aircraft.
A next generation M&E/MRO
IT system evaluates the nature of
discrepancies and other scheduled
line maintenance work planned for
the particular aircraft (based on tail
number) and creates appropriate
tasks. The system identifies the
appropriate line mechanic or
line maintenance engineer (the
resource) based on skill and
competency and then pushes the
tasks as a work order to the Google
Glass worn by the resource. At the
touch of his Glass, the resource
collects the parts required for
the assigned work order from
store and is then directed to the
exact location of the assigned tail
(aircraft) on the line, using his GPS
enabled Google Glass.

NOW, ERP ON
GOOGLE GLASS

Now, returning to the reports

on the future of Google Glass.
Although Google Glass wont
be available to individuals after
January 19th, businesses and
developers will still be able
to purchase the product. In
November 2014, we launched
our ERP (Enterprise Resource
Planning) tool on Google Glass
as well as smart watches, like the
Pebble (see above).
The thinking behind this
development is to enable ground
engineers in global airlines, to
ensure faster turnaround of
large aircraft, like the all-digital
Boeing 787 Dreamliner. For every
flight, the airplane crew pilots,
engineers, ground staff and cabin
crew has to document data,
which runs into almost 500 pages.
This data dynamically changes
for every flight. At the end of a
flight, the pilot provides a real-time
report of snags, issues and possible
problem areas for the next flight.
The turnaround time for the
aircraft directly depends on how
quickly the engineering staff is able
to address the issues raised by the
pilot.
The idea of this development is
to equip airline engineering crew
with Google Glass devices and
smart watches. As the airplane is
entering its parking bay, the crew
gets a list of to-do items that need
to be completed before the next
flight. Using this information

and even before passengers have

disembarked, replacement parts or
software upgrades can be quickly
ready to be installed.
Readers wont need me to tell
them that every extra minute
an airplane spends standing in
its parking bay, costs the airline
or operator money. So, faster
engineering turnarounds make
for big savings which, hopefully,
airlines will pass on to customers.
We are finding that many Indiabased airlines and other Asian
carriers are, even now, trying out
a combined solution based on
Google Glass and a smart watch, to
shave a few valuable minutes from
their engineering operations.
The ability of wearable devices
to seamlessly connect to other
devices, such as mobile phones
and iPads, platforms in which our
solutions already run, provides the
prime mover on which to base an
investment, in the wearable device
revolution. They support real time
data integration with the M&E
system and will immensely help
in improving TAT (turn-around
times). We are continuing to
work towards putting ever greater
degrees of mobility in the hands of
end users, to enhance the overall
user experience of MRO software
solutions. n
