SPECIALS

Whoever you vote in this month, you know and we know that nothing
much will change a few more pennies here, a few less there. Real
change comes from outside politics - people taking a punt on trying
to do new or different things. With the cultural calendar stuttering
a little lately with the loss of Rock Ness, it is great that a local
group have stepped in to ll that gap with the new Groove Loch
Ness event in August - lets hope it is the start of a long-standing
annual shindig that grows and grows. We might humbly suggest it
deserves your support. Likewise the Mumfords-led Aviemore
Stopover event. Whilst it is not likely to become a yearly event,
it might show theres an appetite for a regular event of that scale.
And this month Make It Happen* launches an entrepreneurial
competition for 13-18yr olds in Inverness. They can submit their
ideas online or through school and the best will get through to the
workshops stage and eventually a winner will be chosen and their
idea will recieve a cash boost and loads of support. Good initiative.
Get thinking, young un.

Land and Sea

The sensational paintings of the sea by VERNON JONES [1] were the starting point for THE
SEA, THE SEA, an exhibition running at the CASTLE GALLERY from 0930 MAY. Jones
work is the product of extensive painting of waves to the extent that his seascapes almost
look like photographs, but theyre also possessed of a rare vigour that the camera simply
cant capture. The other two artists in the exhibition are inspired rather more obliquely by
the sea though glass vessels of AMANDA SIMMONS [3] are apparently a direct response
to Jones paintings, as well as her own emotional response to the sea itself and the birds
who inhabit its domain. NATALIE VARDEY [2], meanwhile, works from her studio in Galloway
to create jewellery in sterling silver incorporating freshwater pearls and labradorite, her
signature design is a lace which has been intricately worked in fine silver threads.

There may well be some pictures of the sea in HIGHLANDS IN THE FRAME at EDEN COURT
from 0230 MAY, in which the ART SOCIETY OF INVERNESS, having recently celebrated its
70th anniversary, showcases the work of some of its 250 members from all over the North
in a variety of styles and media.
A trio of interesting exhibitions at INVERNESS MUSEUM & ART GALLERY, particularly ICHIGO ICHE-E by JAMIE DAVIDSON which runs until 30 MAY. As the title suggests it grew from
a three month period he spent in Japan, the phrase traditionally used at a tea ceremony.
His work is inspired by both the natural and built environment particularly the moments
and places where the boundary between these spaces come together. Also at IMAG, REAL
TO REEL is a touring exhibition from the Crafts Council which presents films that are a
final product of contemporary makers practice. Each is an artwork in its own right, and is
concerned with craft and design; thematically, technically or materially. GRAFFITI ON THE
GO, running from 12 MAY03 JUN is an exhibition of works from Joss Street Youth Club,
Invergordon. Vibrantly inspiring, this selection of works displays the contrast of natural and
industrial images visible in the Easter Ross Landscape.
Over at INVERNESS LIBRARY theres BUILDING SCOTLAND, celebrating 14 of Scotlands
traditional building materials, which could be the dullest thing in the world, or oddly
fascinating.

BEAULY GALLERY

MIXED EXHIBITION, May,

Beauly gallery takes us on an
exploration of the rugged coast
line around the Highlands and
Islands region with an exhibition
featuring new works by local
artists JENNY HEPBURN and
FIONA MCKENZIE. Alongside
you can view a selection of
driftwood sculptures of a quirky
nature handmade in Beauly by
local artist LAURA HUSHER.
Also showing new works, taking
a new direction for CHRISTINE

supplies an intimate collection of
her wonderfully ethereal window
scenes, and a small and square
exhibition continues celebrating
the last 10 years of the gallery.

CASTLE GALLERY

MIXED EXHIBITION, 930 May

Seascapes by VERNON JONES,
Glass by AMANDA SIMMONS,
and Jewellery by NATALIE VARDEY.
The sensational paintings of the
sea by Vernon Jones were the
starting point for this exhibition
which brings together three
artists whose work, to a greater
or lesser degree, has been
inspired by the sea.
VERNON JONES has perfected
his detailed renderings of wave
forms over the years. From
a distance the waves look
astonishingly realistic but close
up you begin to notice the
interesting brush strokes, subtle
colour changes and textures.
His wave paintings go far beyond
sterile photo-realism and mere
slavish imitation.

AMANDA SIMMONS is at the

pinnacle of her profession with
an international reputation for
her kiln formed glass vessels.
This current body of work
explores her emotional response
to the sea, the lives of sea birds
and the wave paintings of Vernon
Jones. She manipulates mass,

08

heat, colour and time to create

complex, elusive glass pieces
that have intense colour and
layered patterns.

NATALIE VARDEY works from

her studio in Galloway to
create jewellery in sterling
silver incorporating freshwater
pearls and labradorite. She
occasionally makes use of gold
or oxidised silver to provide
a contrasting highlight. Her
signature design is a lace which
has been intricately worked in
fine silver threads.

2-5pm during exhibn, or by appt
Where I Am is a generative filmtouring project, which explores a
deep history of artists moving
image in Scotland over the past
100 years. Taking its title from
Margaret Taits experimental film
work, Where I Am showcases
the rich tradition of artists
filmmaking in Scotland, and
begins a conversation with
audiences, venues and artists
about what might constitute a
distinctly Scottish tradition in
both a national and international
context. This spring and
summer, each host venue

will adapt the programme in

response to their own context,
by adding a work that they
commissioned or is particularly
resonant to their area, or
organising a talk/performance
event that roots the discussion in
their region. LUX Scotland.
Additional to showing works from
LUX Scotlands archive, HICA will
present the film Atom Town, by
GAIR DUNLOP. h-i-c-a.org

INCHMORE GALLERY

IMAG

INSPIRED BY NATURE, to
09 May. An exhibition from
Birchwood
Highland.
This
tender and colour-filled exhibiton
brings together original works
created by artists participating
in programmes offered by
Birchwood. Artist JULIA finds
her inspiration through life
experiences and the passage
she has made through these.
She paints in arcylic and is selftaught. Capturing the time of
spring and summer when flowers
reappear conveying renewal and
hope, her fellow artist ANNE is
inspired to paint still life studies.
ICHI-GO ICHI-E, to 30 May
JAMIE DAVIDSON graduated from
Moray School of Art in 2013 and
was subsequently selected for
the RSA New Contemporaries
at The Royal Scottish Academy,
Edinburgh that year as well as
IMAGs New Highland Graduate.
This exhibition has evolved
from a 3-month research period
in Japan where the tradition
of living close to nature is
exemplified in the architecture
of their traditional homes and
temple lodgings. Ichi-go ichi-e is
a Japanese phrase which roughly
translates as one time, one
meeting and is most associated
with the tea ceremony although
its central message that every
meeting is unique and will never
come again is easily applied to
daily life and encourages us to
try and cherish every moment we
can as it shall never recur.
REAL TO REEL, to 30 May
A touring exhibition from the
Crafts Council which presents
films that are a final product of

ROMANCE

Film & Beer & Pizza.

First up this issue - plaudits to Eden Court for a new initiative, Cult Cinema showing cult
films of varying vintage a couple times a month the kind of films youd watch at home,
and not only is your experience enhanced by sharing with others and viewing with big screen
and sound, but your ticket price also includes a beer and pizza. The first night will be Thu 30
APR when they screen the Tarantino-penned classic TRUE ROMANCE [1] with Tony Scott
directing Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper. Then
on 21 MAY you can catch Walter Hills THE WARRIORS and then COLLATERAL (dir Michael
Mann, with Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx) on 28 MAY. Top idea chaps.
FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD [2] and NT LIVE: MAN AND SUPERMAN [3] are due
to screen at both Eden Court and Vue the former a Thomas Hardy adaptation with Carey
Mulligan, Michael Sheen and Matthias Schoenaerts from 01 MAY; the latter National Theatres
version of George Bernard Shaws classic drama with shades of Don Juan and Friederich
Nietzsche starring Ralph Fiennes. Eden Court also have an Encore screening on 31 MAY.
Vue as usual get the lions share of new releases some of which are certain to arrive
on schedule, notably MAD MAX: FURY ROAD [4] (15 MAY) - looks every bit as striking as
the original, only with the awesome Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron - but Mel Gibson cameo
rumours have been quashed; Brad Birds TOMORROWLAND [5] (15 MAY) in which GEORGE
(swoon) CLOONEY gets to star in a slick family film; DANNY COLLINS [6] (29 MAY) in which
AL PACINO plays perhaps against type as a music star trying to find himself and MAN UP (29
MAY) in which Simon Pegg plays strictly to type in a comedy. Less certain to arrive but well
worth checking out if they do will be SAMBA (01 MAY) which reunites the wonderful Omar Sy
with the directors of the perfect Intouchables, plus Charlotte Gainsbourg and BIG GAME [7]
(08 MAY) in which - wait for it - Samuel L Jackson plays the president of the USA stranded in
Finland - from Jalmari Helander, the director of the wildly brilliant Rare Exports. Yoiks!
Aside from their drive to encourage a healthy diet above, Eden Court have some fine offerings
for May: X+Y [8] (from 01 MAY) - with Asa Butterfield as an autistic maths prodigy, Noah
Baumbachs WHILE WERE YOUNG with Ben Stiller, Adam Driver and Naomi Watts (fr 08), the
venerable WHISKY GALORE (10) to celebrate the arrival of National Theatres stage show,
THE VOICES (fr 15) in which Ryan Reynolds confounds his detractors playing in this Dextermeets-Garfield weird-out, THE TALE OF THE PRINCESS KAGUYA from the excellent Studio
Ghibli (fr 16), A LITTLE CHAOS [9] (fr 22) - Alan Rickman directs himself and Kate Winslet in
the court of King Louis XIV, the Almodovar-produced WILD TALES (fr 22), Ridley Scotts final
word on the awesome BLADE RUNNER: THE FINAL CUT (fr 22), and THE SALVATION (fr 29),
a Danish western with Mads Mikkelsen, Eva Green and, obviously, Eric Cantona.

Well, this looks like fun. BOUNCE [1], at EDEN COURT on 04 MAY is an acrobatic interactive dance
performance that takes place on a custom-built inflatable, complete with warnings that the audience
is seated on said bouncy inflatable and not on a fixed seat. Its a full body experience created for
young audiences and performed by two acrobats with dance and parkour expertise with an original
score created by Daniel Padden and J.C. Marshall. A beautifully crafted anarchic journey through the
bodys physical capabilities and a shameless, joyous celebration of bouncing, its commissioned
by Imaginate, produced by Platform and supported through the Scottish Governments Edinburgh
Festivals Expo Fund. We dare you not to whoop as you soar through the air.
If dolphins could whoop, they probably would. Indeed they might be doing it without us knowing, in
between communicating back to the home planet from whence they undoubtedly came all about
the eternal folly of human beings. You might want to discuss it with them some day, but if you
want to get your bearings first, head along to the REALLY WILD FESTIVAL [2] at the WHALE AND
DOLPHIN CENTRE on 04 MAY. A fun filled day celebrating the wild side of Spey Bay, this free event
will be packed with fun, interactive activities for all ages, including land based dolphin watching, a 7
metre rock wall, wildlife walks, local food and crafts, free coffee, face painting and much more. As
we said, admission is free, but children must be accompanied by an adult.
There are also plenty of family events at the INVERNESS SCIENCE FESTIVAL, particularly a Fun
Day at the Aquadome on 09 MAY. More details on P21.

Not Much On Then

Your opera singers are, on the whole, a rum bunch. A curious mixture of talent, tension and
unpredictability, theyre like racehorses who can sing. Which would be quite something
and most definitely worth the price of a ticket. Fortunately RUSSELL WATSON [1] comes
across as having none of that spoilt personality so, as well as a fine voice he seems a
decent fellow. Hes managed to combine commercial appeal with some sort of artistic
integrity and its proved a successful formula. Find out for yourself when he brings his UP
CLOSE AND PERSONAL performance to EDEN COURT on 08 MAY.
JULIAN COPE [2] virtually redefined erratic behaviour and we wouldnt have it any other
way. From eighties pop, through scholarly tomes on ancient archaeology to myriad
extraordinary side projects including a Gnostic hooligan road novel, he never fails
to surprise. And behind the off-kilter Hells Angel image theres a hugely entertaining
raconteur with heaps of great songs. More than just a marvellously unpredictable
eccentric, hes still a captivating performer as hell show at IRONWORKS on 12 MAY.
MARK MORRISS [3] is another engaging raconteur and fine songwriter, his solo work
since The Bluetones showing no dip in quality. He proves it at EDEN COURT on 08 MAY
and in the meantime you can check out some of his favourite records on P18.
Theres plenty to delight rock fans of every stripe this month, highlights being PUBLIC
SERVICE BROADCASTING (IRONWORKS, 01 MAY), BREW AT THE BOG (BOGBAIN,
02/03 MAY), FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND [4] (IRONWORKS, 09 MAY), THE WINTER
TRADITION (IRONWORKS, 17 MAY) and WHILE SHE SLEEPS [5] (IRONWORKS, 29 MAY).
Folk fans are equally well served with big names on show like THE FUREYS (EDEN COURT,
15 MAY), SETH LAKEMAN [6] (IRONWORKS, 21 MAY), ex Ocean Colour Scenesters
new folk project SIMON FOWLERS MERRYMOUTH [7] (EDEN COURT, 14 MAY), BRUCE
MOLSKY (GLEN URQUHART PUBLIC HALL, 24 MAY), THE RAILSPLITTERS (UNIVERSAL
HALL, FINDHORN, 31 MAY) and an area-wide tour throughout the month from the always
excellent PHIL & ALY [8]. While the latter are old hands at traditional Scottish sounds,
there are a couple of younger Scots folk acts making waves in the form of BREABACH (EDEN
COURT, 07 MAY) and SCOCHA (EDEN COURT, 09 MAY). Both well worth checking out.
We always like a bit of spectacle and though the billing - YAMATO THE DRUMMERS
OF JAPAN BAKUON [9] - may be bafflingly clumsy, you can expect breathtaking
syncopation, strength and endurance from these extraordinary exponents of Japanese
Taiko drumming when they come to EDEN COURT on 14 MAY.
Finally a word for some of the excellent classical fare at EDEN COURT in the form of
SCOTTISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA (02 MAY) and INVERNESS CHORALs performance
of HANDELS MESSIAH (03 MAY), plus a classic of another kind when club legend
FELIX DA HOUSECAT [10] comes to IRONWORKS on 23 MAY.

MARK MORRISS: What Ive Been Listening To

Eden Court OneTouch, Inverness, Fri 08 May

Back in the giddy Britpop days, The Bluetones

were always that bit more thrilling than anyone
else thanks to a knack for coming up with glorious
melodies and elegant, witty lyrics. Much of that
was due to singer MARK MORRISS and his
ensuing solo work has proved just as enjoyable.
Hes played up here regularly in recent years
and this month sees his most high-profile show
yet as he comes to EDEN COURT on 08 MAY
(dont miss). Weve no doubt hell throw a few
old classics into the fray as well as showing why
hes still one of the most engaging and inventive
songwriters around. Here are some of the records
that are currently inspiring him:
#1 GAZ COOMBES - Detroit
Have always been a fan of Gaz, since having the
pleasure of touring with Supergrass in 1995. This
is just one of many highlights from his new record
Matador and shows that hes lost none of his
spark or grace. A brilliant driving song.
#2 COURTNEY BARNETT - Avant Gardener
Shes just released a new album which I havent
got yet but have been enjoying bits of on the
radio. This is from one of her earlier EPs, and on
first listen really sets her apart from absolutely
everybody else. A brilliant, witty, self-effacing and
unique songwriter.

18

#3 WEEZER - The Good Life

This is an oldie from their, in my opinion,
masterpiece of a second album Pinkerton. Im
recording a covers album for Acid Jazz records at
the moment and have done a version of another
of their songs, but it got me listening to a lot of
their records again and this is a gem. Grows
more meaningful with every passing year.
#4 KENDRICK LAMAAR - King Kunta
I literally cannot stop playing this at the moment.
Hip-hop has been a little flat for me in the last
few years. Sure, Kanyes alright, and he does
produce the occasional bomb of a song, but hes
a very difficult artist to love. This track has all the
technique and skill associated with modern day
hip-hop, with more than a little fire in its belly. Like
the old days of Gangsta Rap, Holmes.
#5 ROXY MUSIC - Same Old Scene
Ive been doing a lot of travelling lately, and driving
myself from gig to gig, and Roxy Music are always
great in the car. I remember listening to Flesh
and Blood on cassette as a kid, being ferried
about by my mum, and I guess thats why it feels
good to me in that environment. Timeless.

The Wonders of Science

Stephen Hawking and Brian Cox recently trademarked their own names as brands,
demonstrating that science has become, if not sexy, then certainly a thing. And
a thing thats proving increasingly popular thanks to Cox and his ilk. Expect plenty
of interest then in the INVERNESS SCIENCE FESTIVAL 2015 [1] taking place
at various venues from 0110 MAY. Its a celebration of science and technology
organised by the University of the Highlands and Islands with a varied programme
of events for people of all ages, including everything from academic lectures
to a family fun day (at Inverness Leisure on 09 MAY). The BodyWorks On Tour
team will be at the family day to demonstrate exciting and interactive health and
wellbeing demos, letting you measure your heart rate and grip strength and test
your balance and co-ordination. You can even get hands on with a range of cutting
edge synthetic human tissues. Full details at the festival website:
uhi.ac.uk/en/inverness-science-festival
If your idea of science instead involves tinkering under the bonnet of a car, youll
enjoy the returning INVERNESS CLASSIC VEHICLE SHOW [2] in the city centre
on 09 MAY. While the petrolheads, no doubt choking back sobs at the demise of
Jeremy Clarksons career, will be looking admiringly at the more modern autos
on show, some of us will be sighing wistfully at the elegant curves of rather older
jalopies, hankering for a time before design homogeneity ruined the glamour and
verve of motoring.
No gentle motoring for NIALL MCCANN [3], who brings an evening suitably entitled
RED IN TOOTH & CLAW to EDEN COURT on 28 MAY. Familiar from TV shows like
Lost in the Amazon: The Enigma of Col. Fawcett and Biggest & Baddest, McCann
has travelled the planet, turning his hand to a variety of expeditions; rowing the
Atlantic, biking trips in the Himalayas, canoeing the Yukon River, big wall climbing,
man-hauling across Greenland, mountaineering, ice-climbing and speed flying.
Hell be sharing tales of his derring-do and submitting to a short Q &A afterwards,
when you might want to ask whether he sometimes just feels like a quiet night in.
Perhaps you get more inspiration from dancing. If so, youll certainly want to be at
TOE2TOEs STRICTLY SHOWCASE at DRUMOSSIE HOTEL on 30 MAY. A popular
yearly event, it always brings the big names and this time round is no exception,
with two of the most likeable professionals from Strictly, hubby & wife pair
KAREN HAUER & KEVIN CLIFTON [4] coming to Inverness for the first time to
participate. For further information contact Jennifer Hill on 01463 513613 / info@

than the last, it is easy to see what drew the films producer, Pedro Almodovar, to the project.

Youth enterprise competition inspires

bright future for entrepreneurial education
MAKE IT HAPPEN, a nationwide

young people to become

background or academic ability.

The competition, developed by the

social enterprise BAD IDEA, gives
13-18 year-olds the opportunity to
develop their own business ideas,
raise funding and provide support
to put them into practice. It is the
irst of its kind to give a universityaccredited certiicate to the young
people who take part.
ANTHONY GERRARD, the CEO
of Bad Idea, said: The competition

Show Of Strength
By the time you read this, the SPL season will be approaching its climax, with ICT probably
on their way to Europe and possibly still in the cup, while Ross Countys astonishing run of
form since the turn of the year will surely see them retain top-flight status and give them
something very promising to build on next time round. So, as the football takes a break,
focus turns to other sports and one of the most popular events up here in the latest round
of INVERNESS ABC BOXING at IRONWORKS on 30 MAY. Highland Boxing Academy ABC is
run as a not-for-profit Club and was founded back in 2011 by a nucleus of dedicated boxing
coaches, instilling all sorts of good values about sportsmanship and fair play. And, as well
as providing much-needed focus for youngsters, its also throwing up some burgeoning
talents. Well worth your support.
Its certainly a month when levels of fitness are tested to the limit and another hugely
popular event is the SCOTTISH SIX DAYS TRIAL at FORT WILLIAM from 0409 MAY.
Motorcycle riders complete up to 100 miles each day over six consecutive days. Each day
they will take on a combination of rough moorland, rocky tracks and public roads in the
best - and worst - weather the Highlands of Scotland can throw at them. More details at
ssdt.org
If thats not quite hard enough for you, how about the CAPE WRATH CHALLENGE at
DURNESS from 1016 MAY. Experience running in some of the UKs last remaining
wilderness with events suitable for all abilities, whether you enjoy road running, off road,
competitive or recreational, or enjoy the social side of things. The highlights of the week
are the Marathon and Team Event. The marathon route takes the most North Westerly tip
of mainland Britain through an area of outstanding natural beauty. Ferry crossings and
some 2,500 feet of climbing make this one of the most challenging courses in the UK.

So Much To See
A veritable plethora of theatrical diversions this month, so little room for elaboration,
though, as always, you can peruse the listings on the following pages and head to our
website at whatsonhighlands.com to find out more about individual events. And they
certainly cover the artistic spectrum, kicking off with WHISKY GALORE [1] at EDEN
COURT on 11 MAY. National Theatre of Scotland present a new, Gaelic adaptation of
Compton MacKenzies novel (familiar to most in its film adaptation), telling the tale of
islanders dealing with thousands of cases of the hard stuff when its washed ashore
during the war. Live music and English surtitles for those who arent familiar with the
Gaelic in which it will be performed.
Of course dancing transcends language, so SNOW WHITE ON ICE [2] at EDEN COURT
from 2631 MAY should be a big draw. Curious perhaps to have an ice show just as
summer intimates its approach, but the skills of the world famous Russian Ice Stars
transcend seasonality.
More icy climes in WHITEOUT [3] at EDEN COURT on 17 MAY. And indeed more dancing.
Acclaimed choreographer Natasha Gilmore, (Tiger, Glasgow Girls, The River) explores
bi-racial relationships with honesty and humour as a constellation of six dancers moves
from digital projection to live performance, producing a visually rich, dynamic dance
theatre piece informed by personal experiences. Musical composition comes from
Scottish musician and novelist Luke Sutherland, (Mogwai, Venus as a Boy).
As the above demonstrates, the dramatic arts can deal with all sorts of serious
subjects and thats emphasised by NORMAL/MADNESS [4] at EDEN COURT on 05
MAY. Based on a true story, this solo show is a frank, funny and deeply touching tale of
Kirsty McKenzie and her schizophrenic mother, managing to be hugely entertaining while
addressing notions of what exactly constitutes normality.
Theres something of a theme running through proceedings as, on 20 MAY at EDEN
COURT you can get an insight into the vagaries of your noggin, courtesy of the intriguing
BRAINSEX. Presented by the engaging Timandra Harkness, its a look at how whats
inside our skulls affects human behaviour, using an irreverent mix of comedy, video,
songs, gameshow and live experiments on the audience. A thought provoking mixture of
science fun and science fact, its designed to appeal to adults but suitable for all ages
and backgrounds.

Its quite a month for comedy at EDEN COURT, the most inventive likely to come from
PAUL MERTONS IMPRO CHUMS [5] on 22 MAY. A veteran of the impro lark, Mertons
imagination and creativity is boundless, so expect something pretty special. Less well
known, but a rising star on the Scottish comedy scene, GARY LITTLE (01 MAY) has
played everywhere from swanky corporate affairs to gigs in prisons and despite his
tough, skinhead exterior is a warm, inventive storyteller. DES CLARKE (23 MAY) is further
up the Scots comedy ladder having won awards and even hosted the closing ceremony of
the Commonwealth Games. A nod too for the play RAPID DEPARTURE (ONETOUCH, 22
MAY) from the writers of the excellent The Accidental Death of an Accordionist This fivehander finds a village hit by a freak flood, the locals response leading to laughs aplenty.
If comedys your thing, its worth heading along to the COMEDY BOTHY on the third floor
of HOOTANANNY on 01 MAY. A free monthly event. It features the best local stand-ups
and is very much the place to spot rising talent.
Marilyn Monroe was actually an accomplished comedic actress, as shown in the sublime
Some Like It Hot. Also, of course an irresistible screen presence and a troubled soul. A
glimpse into that comes with THE UNREMARKABLE DEATH OF MARILYN MONROE [6]
at EDEN COURT on 10 MAY. From the company responsible for the excellent Female
Gothic, I, Elizabeth and Austens Women this is a stark confessional written and
directed by Elton Townend Jones. Overdosed on pills, the woman behind the icon
unravels her remarkable life and bares all, revealing a biting intelligence, a frustrated
talent and all sorts of issues with her perception of her self. Should be fascinating.

We have been telling you about some of the most popular
cosmetic treatments we offer at Eilertsen Dental care.

Last month in ICA we told you about our anti-wrinkle

treatments. These work by smoothing the appearance of fine
lines and wrinkles.
SIX MONTH SMILES is a revolutionary new treatment
that helps to improve the position of your teeth if they are
misaligned. The treatment involves having clear brackets
with discrete white wires placed on your teeth. The brace
will gently alter the position of the teeth to a more aesthetic
position.

After >

Before >

If your teeth are crooked, twisted, spaced, worn down in

unusual places or if you have had braces in the past and your
teeth have relapsed leaving you unhappy with your smile then
Six month smiles could be just the option for you.
OPPOSITE are examples of before and after images for 3
separate patients to give you an idea of what is possible >>>
SIX MONTH SMILES uses new technology to provide a simple
and very effective solution to give you a straight, healthy and
beautiful smile without having to remove healthy teeth or
wear braces for several years.
SOME ADVANTAGES INCLUDE:
Average treatment time is 6 months
Clear brackets & wires are barely visible
Specialist Six Month Smiles patient tray kits make
appointment times short & comfortable.
Low forces are involved meaning treatment is more
comfortable & your teeth are kept healthy.
Short overall treatment time means hygiene can be
maintained more easily.
Less expensive than conventional orthodontic treatment.

Making The Most Of You:

beauty

Korea putting the K in sKin Kare

From BB creams and CC creams to Snail slime. . .

In recent times it seems that all the latest crazes in skin care have all come from one
place South Korea is denitely where it s at.
Clear skin ranks highly in the beauty stakes here and people spend a lot more time and
eort on their regime - often using over 20 steps twice a day. It s all about the layers
- cleansing oils, cleansers, foams, toners, serums/essences, mists, emulsions/lotions,
creams, exfoliants, face masks, eye creams, sleeping packs - the range can seem quite
bewildering, but those that have taken the time to investigate report good results for
their complexion.
Accordingly, the demand for eective and top quality products is high and with the
global commercial success of the likes of BB cream (blemish balm), the Korean beauty
industry now invests hugely in research and development - hence the bewildering range
of unusual ingredients, from those that sound good enough to eat (honey, green tea,
bamboo sap, mandarin essence) to those which, er, don t - snail slime, donkey milk, horse
oil, bee venom, fermented yeast and more. Either way, they are using natural products
over harsh chemicals.
Whilst it seems in the UK the big chains haven t quite cottoned on yet, you can easily
source many of the top Korean brands like Skin Food, TonyMoly, Banila co., Missha,
Innisfree, Baviphat, The Face Shop and Etude House online. You can take your chances
on Ebay - or go to one of several UK-based websites like koreankosmetics.co.uk but
either way it worth reading up before you decide what products and regime might be
right for you.

EATING OUT

The Kitchen Brasserie

15 Huntly Street, Inverness
Everyone knows The Kitchen - the
modern place over the river slotted
into a tiny alley space on Huntly Street
- three floors of vitreous style perched
just a dozen paces from the fastflowing Ness, a mere six and a shade
metres wide.
Back when it was launched (2007) it
was quite the talk of the town, with its
bold all-glass frontage and its curved
wing-shaped roof standing strong on
both feet by the waterfront like Cristiano
Ronaldo about to take a free kick.
This was a time when Inverness was
adventurous and full of confidence
- the fastest growing city in europe
tag was everywhere and most of the
people, and for a bit local government
and local enterprise, dreamt big and
had a bit of belief. Latterly the wind
has sadly gone out of some of those
sails - you can blame the recession, a
new conservatism, or just the cycles
and whims of time. You perhaps need
a perfect storm of the right people
with vision in the right positions and
the right economic conditions for one
of those lovely peaks to occur. The
price for peaks is inevitably trough and

01463 259 119

looking around from our lofty window

seat at the carnage of the necessary
Imsure flood protection (its not really
alleviating, now, is it?) work that has
dominated the riverside north of Ness
Bridge for well over a year now you
might surmise were a little more
trough right now. Especially when the
citys streets are dominated by shops
empty, charity, betting or pawn.
Inverness still has quite a high diningout capacity - largely able to cope
with a big night out for the locals at
the same time as accommodating
a townful of tourists. Of course, the
tourists arent yet here year-round, and
not every opening time is a local big
night out so especially the lunchtime
slot is very competitive and represents
quite a conundrum for many
establishments. Hence The Kitchens
simple proposition: Good quality local
ingredients with nothing too fancy or
time-consuming done to them, served
in not too large quantities in a timely
fashion. Keep the numbers high, the
cost low, the service quick and the
customers happy.
For an initial period The Kitchen was

a little bit this and a little bit that, but,

like good people, good restaurants
evolve through childhood rather than
spring full-amoured from the ground.
As with many successful enfants,
having successful owners (sorry,
parents) helps and The Kitchen
comes from the same household as
the ever-popular The Mustard Seed
plus St Andrews The Glass House
- and all function on much the same
principles.
So it is no surprise that the place now
runs with beautiful efficiency, like the
magical automaton in Scorceses
Hugo you couldnt make a success
of a high volume, low cost lunctime
proposition any other way. And this
is a low-cost lunctime proposition:
7.95 for two courses? In these
surroundings? Absolutely. The staff
are lean and honed as the hard
architecture and sharp interiors, and
operate to a high standard pleasant,
efficient and certain.
Weve chanced on a brilliant spring
day to dine - allowing all that
glass to come into its own.

Sauce. Well, you would, wouldnt you.
This trout is pinked up fancy salmonlike and slips down a treat - the potato
and leaves complement texturally and
the sauce suits perfectly - though
more pea than smoked bacon.
Simple, effective.
The potential problem with a very tight
but efficient menu is that yer fussy
eaters - such as this veggie - find little
to choose from. Indeed, today the only
main for me is the Thyme Marinated
Tomato and Feta Pizza Bread with
Fresh Rocket dressed with Extra
Virgin Olive Oil but to be honest, I
was more than happy with that. What
looks fairly unassuming in fact is a
beautifully fragrant, flavour-packed
dish - the thin bread ensuring Im not
wading through doughy mouthfuls of
chew and that the simple but distinct
toppings can really shine through.
Now, the menu offers the two-course
deal, but you didnt think wed be so
slack as to stop there, did you? Nah,
desserts menus were summoned
and a short beat later we welcome
one Raspberry Crme Brle and one
Apple & Cinnamon Crumble. The latter
was a little overdone and perhaps a
little underpowered - pleasant but a
tad underwhelming; the former was
sightly more emphatic - crisp topping
requiring of a little oomph to break,
creamy-smooth berry-tinged custard
with a nice, unfussy shortbread to
boot. Tick.
So, one dessert aside, The Kitchen
impresses quite effortlessly the
truly talented always make it look
easy, eh? Great value, great food,
great service. Simple.

A Safe Seat

The Vik Chair from Ligne Roset

What with an election set to dominate proceedings this month and all those
parliamentary seats changing hands, we just couldn t resist looking at seats too.
Looking for a new set of dining chairs? Or perhaps some seating for your oce or
waiting area? Or a stylish addition to your hallway? Check out this Vik chair from
Ligne Roset a beautiful yet practical chair built for durability, comfort and of course,
timeless style.
Ligne Roset have been involved with furniture since upholstering in the 1930s. After
the war they began producing practical, stackable furniture to exacting technical
standards for schools, oces and hospitals but perhaps they really came into their
own in the late 60s with the introduction of innovative foam furniture.
The Vik chair combines all of those elements - the seat, back and sides are cushioned
with a high resilience polyurethane Bultex foam (bordered with a layer of high
density agglomerated foam for guaranteed longevity); the base is in solid ash with
protective gliders whilst the back/seat shell is in moulded beech multi-ply, making
for a strong but light chair (6.5Kg); the covers (available in 60+ colours) are held in
place by gripper strips and are fully removable.
Measurements: H = 840mm; W = 600mm; D = 580mm; Seat = 500mm
Also available without armrests. You ll nd the Vik chair at www.ligne-roset.co.uk or you can visit their
online shop: shop.ligne-roset.co.uk Vik prices from 470 to 773

Sure there are other words that cow .. it might be necessary

the purple hat saying that line).
Thats FOUR hads in a row
and it still makes sense as a
sentence! And this is where it all
becomes magic and mystical, it
seems that you can keep adding
pairs of the word had to such
sentences and they continue
to make sense albeit that its
very difficult to work just exactly
what sense they make. A quick
search on line and youll see
someones written just such a
sentence with ELEVEN hads in
a row - I wonder if you can just
keep adding hads forever
Which brings me back to my
original question, had you
noticed that the word had was
special? If you had had thats
fine .. if not - its something to
think about.
KEN

Keep up.
