Answer There are four RRC states present in UMTS .

# 2 1.CELL_DCH STATE
2.CELL_FACH STATE
3.CELL_PCH STSTE
4.URA_PCH STATE
WHEN MOBILE IS MOVING FROM IDLE MODE
TO DEDICATED MODE AND
DATA TRANMISSION IS OF LARGE AMOUNT
OF DATA THEN CELL_DCH
STATE COMES IN TO PICTURE .
IF DATA TRANSMISSION IS OF SMALL AMOUT
OF DATA THEN
CELL_FACH STATE WILL COME IN TO
PICTURE
WHEN MOBILE IS MOVING FROM ONE CELL
TO ANOTHER CELL IT
SHOULD PERFORM HANDOVER THEN
MOBILE RRC STATE WILL BE IN
CELL_PCH STATE.
URA MEANS UTRAN REGISTRATION AREA
THE AREA COVERED BY ONE RNC IS KNOWN
AS URA
SO WHEN MOBILE IS MOVING FROM URA
AREA TO ANOTHER URA AREA
THEN LOCATION UPDATION SHOULD
PERFORM THEN MOBLIE RRC STATE
COMES TO URA_PCH STATE .

Answer WHEN THE MOBILE CHANGES ITS STATE

# 3 FROM URA IDEAL MODE TO URA
CONNECTED MODE. RRC HAS FOUR STATES
IN UTRAN.
1.CELL_DCH STATE
2.CELL_FACH STATE
3.CELL_PCH STSTE
4.URA_PCH STATE
THESE ARE MAINLY COMMON TRANSPORT
CHANNEL TYPE SWITGHING,
DONE BY MAC, BUT UNDER THE
SUPERVISION OF RRC.
CELL_FACH: IN THIS STATE UE IS KNOW ON
CELL LEVEL AND UE
USES FACH TRANSPORT CHANNEL TO SEND
DCCH AND CCCH INFO.
CELL_FACH IS THE ONLY STATE THAT CAN
BE ENTERED FROM STATES
WITHOUT RESOURCES LIKE FROM IDEAL
MODE, CELL_PCH, URA_PCH.
CELL_DCH; in this state ue is known on the cell
level and
uses the dch transport channel. this state can entered
from
cell_fach, cell_pch, ura_pch by setting up a dedicated
channel.
CELL_PCH: IN THIS STATE UE IS ALSO
KNOWN ON CELL LEVEL BUT
NO RESOURCES ARE USED BY THE UE. THE
UE ONLY LISTEN TO

sambit routray

SYSTEM INFO. AND PAGGING INFO.IN THIS

STATE THE RRC
CONNECTION IS MAINTAINED BUT TO
EXANGE MSG BETWEEN UE AND
UTRAN A PAGGING AND A FOLLOWING
TRANSITION CELL_FACH IS
REQUIRED.
URA_PCH: IN THIS STATE THE UTRAN KNOWS
UE ON THE UTRA LEVEL.
THESE STATE TRANSITION ARE ONLY BASED
UPON THE AMOUNT OF
DATA FLOW.

Answer There are 4 RRC CONNECTED MODE states,

#4
1.Cell_DCH:
Possible to transfer large quantities of uplink and
downlink data
Dedicated channels can be used for both CS and PS
connections
HSDPA and HSUPA can be used for PS connections
UE and network resource requirement is relatively
high
Soft handover possible for dedicated channels and
HSUPA
Inter-system and inter-frequency handover possible
Radio access network uses U-RNTI, H-RNTI, ERNTI to identify UE
Paging Type 2 messages without a DRX cycle are
used for paging purposes
2.CELL_FACH:
Possible to transfer small quantities of uplink and
downlink PS data
CS connections require transition to CELL_DCH
Release 7 of the 3GPP specifications introduces

joby joseph

HSDPA for CELL_FACH

UE and network resource requirement relatively low
Cell re-selections completed when UE is mobile
Inter-system and inter-frequency handover possible
Radio access network uses U-RNTI and C-RNTI to
identify UE
Paging Type 2 messages without a DRX cycle are
used for paging purposes
3.CELL_PCH:
Uplink data transfer is not possible
Downlink MBMS and CBS data can be received
Paging Type 1 messages with a DRX cycle are used
for paging purposes
Paging UE in CELL_PCH is more efficient than
paging UE in RRC Idle mode
Transitions to CELL_FACH use the Cell Update
procedure for more than one reason
The UE and network resource requirement is less
than CELL_FACH
Cell reselections and cell updates completed when a
UE is mobile
Inter-system and inter-frequency cell reselections
possible
Radio access network uses U-RNTI to identify UE
4.URA_PCH:
Uplink data transfer is not possible
Downlink MBMS and CBS data can be received
Paging Type 1 messages with a DRX cycle are used
for paging purposes
Paging UE in URA_PCH is less efficient than paging
UE in CELL_PCH
Transitions to CELL_FACH use URA and Cell
Update procedures for more than one reason
The UE and network resource requirement is
potentially less than CELL_PCH
Cell reselections and URA updates completed when a
UE is mobile
Inter-system and inter-frequency cell reselections
possible
Radio access network uses U-RNTI to identify UE

Answer @Answer 2 :

Some ques
1) how it will be decided that data is less or high ?
when entering into cell_dch or cell_fach state.!!!
RLC buffer occupancy comes into later part of
picture intially How it will be decided that UE should
move into CELL_DCH or CELL_FACH ?

Answer Actually I have a new question related to this subject.

# 6 What are the theoretical and practical transitions
between states on a PS call that goes idle?
(All states involved)
CELL_DCH > CELL_FACH > CELL_PCH >
URA_PCH > IDLE
(CELL_PCH or URA_PCH)
CELL_DCH > CELL_FACH > CELL_PCH > IDLE
CELL_DCH > CELL_FACH > URA_PCH > IDLE
(No CELL_PCH or URA_PCH)
CELL_DCH > CELL_FACH > IDLE
(No CELL_FACH)
CELL_DCH > CELL_PCH > URA_PCH > IDLE
CELL_DCH > CELL_PCH > IDLE
CELL_DCH > URA_PCH > IDLE

Answer CELL_DCH state is characterised by:

#7
A dedicated physical channel is allocated to the UE
in
uplink and downlink.
The UE is known on cell level according to its
current
active set.
Dedicated transport channels, downlink and uplink
(TDD)
shared transport channels, and a combination of these
transport channels can be used by the UE.
CELL_FACH state is characterised by:
No dedicated physical channel is allocated to the UE.
The UE continuously monitors a FACH in the
downlink.
The UE is assigned a default common or shared
transport
channel in the uplink (e.g. RACH) that it can use
anytime
according to the access procedure for that transport
channel.
The position of the UE is known by UTRAN on cell
level
according to the cell where the UE last made a cell
update.
In TDD mode, one or several USCH or DSCH
transport channels
may have been established.
CELL_PCH state is characterised by:
No dedicated physical channel is allocated to the UE.
The UE selects a PCH with the algorithm, and uses
DRX for
monitoring the selected PCH via an associated PICH.

No uplink activity is possible.

The position of the UE is known by UTRAN on cell
level
according to the cell where the UE last made a cell
update
in CELL_FACH state.
URA_PCH State is characterised by:
No dedicated channel is allocated to the UE.
The UE selects a PCH with the algorithm, and uses
DRX for
monitoring the selected PCH via an associated PICH.
No uplink activity is possible.
The location of the UE is known on UTRAN
Registration area
level according to the URA assigned to the UE
during the
last URA update in CELL_FACH state.
