TEST 1
This is the Key English Test Listening Paper.
There are five parts to the test: Parts One,
Two, Three, Four and Five.
We will now stop for a moment before we
start the test. Please ask any questions now
because you mustnt speak during the test.
Look at the instructions for Part One.
You will hear five short conversations.
You will hear each conversation twice.
There is one question for each conversation.
For questions 1 to 5, put a tick under the
right answer.
Here is an example:
Which train are they going to catch?
M Are we going to catch the fast train tomorrow?
F Thats the 10.15, isnt it? I think that will get us
there too late. Well have to take the one at 9
oclock because we need to be there by 10.45
at the latest.
M OK.

The answer is the 9 oclock train, so there is a

tick in box A.
Now we are ready to start.
Look at question One.
One: Which photograph does the man like
most?
M I really like these photographs.
F Yes. I love the one of the flowers.
M Me too, but I think my favourite is the one of
the mountains.
F Oh, I thought you would like the sea best.
Now listen again. (Repeat)

Two: Which class is the girl going to do?

M Are you going to do your art class again this year?
F Art is on Monday, which is when the new dance
class starts, and all my friends are doing that.
M And you want to be with them. Do they do
singing as well?
F I hope not my music teacher at school says I
cant sing at all!
Now listen again. (Repeat)

Three: What main course does the woman

choose?
F What special dishes have you got this evening?
M Theres grilled fish, grilled chicken and steak.
The steak is very good.

Yes. I had the steak the last time I was here. Im

having fish to start with, so I think Ill have the
chicken for a change.
M OK.
Now listen again. (Repeat)

Four: Where did the boy come in the running

race?
F Did you win the running race again?
M Jack was in front of me all the way until the last
10 metres. I just passed the finishing line about
a second before him. The person in third place
came in a long way behind.
F It was a hard race then. You must be tired.
M Yes, really tired.
Now listen again. (Repeat)

Five: How long has the girls father been

away?
M When does your dad get back from his
business trip? Hes been away for a long time.
F Yes. Its three weeks now. He wont be back for
another two weeks.
M That is a long time. More than a month.
F I know, but I talk to him every day on the phone.
Now listen again. (Repeat)
This is the end of Part One.

Now look at Part Two.

Listen to Jack telling his mother about his
day trip.
What did he do at each time?
For questions 6 to 10, write a letter A to H
next to each time.
You will hear the conversation twice.
F

What time did you leave this morning Jack? I

didnt hear you go.
M We caught the early train at 9 oclock to get
there before 11 oclock when the museum
opens. If you dont get there then you have to
wait for ages.
F Did you stay there all morning?
M Yes. We had lunch there too. It was raining at
12 and we were very hungry so we didnt go
for a picnic in the park, we ate in the caf.
F Did you go shopping after that?
M Yes but at 2 oclock we were tired so we went
to see a film. That finished at 3.45 so at 4
oclock we went on the river trip.
F You did do a lot! I expect you are very hungry
now.
M Not really. At 6 oclock we were near Park
Street so we went to see Grandma. She was
having supper so we had lots to eat with her.
Now listen again. (Repeat)
This is the end of Part Two.

KET Practice Tests

F

F Do you have any family holidays for next week?

M Lets see. I have departure dates on the 18th,
the 19th is full and the 20th is no good because
its just for two people.
F Where are the holidays?
M France, Spain and Greece. The cheapest
holiday is in France but that is in an apartment.
If you want to go to a hotel, it will cost less to
go to The Hotel Playa in Spain.
F OK. What kind of hotel is it?
M It has three stars. It has its own beach but it
doesnt have its own swimming pool or
childrens club, Im afraid.
F Thats OK. How much is it per week?
M Lets see. The normal price is two hundred and
ninety pounds per person per week, but you
can get it for two hundred and fifty pounds
each or two hundred and thirty pounds for
fourteen nights.
F Does that include all meals?
M Only breakfast and dinner, and you dont have to
pay for transport from the airport to the hotel.
F What time is the flight?
M Departure time is two oclock and it arrives at
five oclock. The flight is only two hours long
but there is a one hour time difference.
F So what time...
Now listen again. (Repeat)
This is the end of Part Three.

Now look at Part Five.

You will hear someone explaining how to
prepare a vegetable dish.
Listen and complete questions 21 to 25.

Is it expensive?
Its not cheap! We paid 120 for four people,
so thats about 30 each.
Yes, that is quite expensive.
They do a cheaper menu on Monday. I think
its half price then.
Thats good. Is it in the centre of town?
Yes, its in Bridge Street, near the cinema. Its
very nice inside and they have a big garden
with lots of tables outside.

Do you have the phone number? Perhaps I will

book a table for next week. Its Marks birthday
on Tuesday.
F Yes here it is... 4916 double 5 3
F Thanks.
Now listen again. (Repeat)

This is the end of Part Four.

Today I am going to tell you how to make a very

easy vegetable dish from Ireland. This is a dish
made with potatoes and spring onions. Now, the
Irish are famous for their love of potatoes and this
is one of their favourite dishes. Its called champ,
thats C H A M P. If you want to make enough for
four people you will need eight large potatoes.
Boil the potatoes for twenty minutes or until they
are soft. While the potatoes are boiling cut the
onions into very small pieces. When the potatoes
are ready peel and mash them. Add some hot
milk to the potatoes. Some people like to add
butter too, but I dont think you need to. Put the
onions in with the potatoes. This dish should be
eaten very hot. It is very nice eaten with ham.

KET Practice Tests

There is one question for each conversation.
For questions 1 to 5, put a tick under the
right answer.
Here is an example:
Which train are they going to catch?
M Are we going to catch the fast train tomorrow?
F Thats the 10.15, isnt it? I think that will get us

M OK.

The answer is the 9 oclock train, so there is a

tick in box A.
Now we are ready to start.
Look at question One.
One: Which dress will Sally wear?
F Which dress shall I wear to the party?
M You always look nice in the black dress.
F Thats my favourite dress but Ill be too hot in
it this evening. I prefer the one with flowers on
it to the white one. What do you think?
M Yes, its better for dancing in.
Now listen again. (Repeat)

Two: What time did the man leave the office?

M Sorry Im late. The trains were delayed.
F Not again. I rang the office at 6.30 and you
werent there.
M No. I wanted to get home by 7 oclock to play
tennis, so I left early at 6 and then I had to wait
45 minutes for a train.
F Well, you can have the car tomorrow because
Im working from home.
Now listen again. (Repeat)

Three: Which photo shows the womans

grandchildren?
F

These are my grandchildren. Thats Jake, the

oldest. Hes ten.
F Doesnt he look like his mother? The same dark
hair.
F Yes but his sisters are quite different. Theyre like
their father. Poor Jake doesnt have a brother to
play with. I hope the new baby will be a boy.
F Yes, it would be nice for him.
Now listen again. (Repeat)

Four: What size shoes will they buy?

M Mum, these shoes are too small.
F Already? Theyre only three months old. I
thought we bought a size 40 so that you would
have lots of room to grow.
M These are only a 39. The 40 was much too big.
F Well, this time well get a 41 to make sure you
can wear them for longer.
Now listen again. (Repeat)

10

Five: Where will they meet?

F

The film starts at 8 so shall I meet you at the

cinema at 7.45?
M Why dont we meet at the caf near the cinema?
F I wont have time. Itll take me 20 minutes to
walk from the station and I cant leave work
before 7 today.
M OK. Ill get there early to get the tickets.
Now listen again. (Repeat)
This is the end of Part One.

Now look at Part Two.

Listen to Tom telling his mother about the
sports classes he is doing.
What day will he do each sport?
For questions 6 to 10, write a letter A to H
next to each day.
You will hear the conversation twice.
F

Which sports are you doing on each day this

year, Tom?
M On Monday its swimming again.
F The same as last year so on Tuesday will you
have rugby?
M I cant do it this year because weve got
football on that day.
F Oh. So what about Wednesday?
M I wanted to practise football with my friends
but the teacher said I had to do volleyball. Oh
Mum. Theres a new class on Thursday.
F Whats that then?
M We have to wear white jackets and trousers,
there are different colour belts and we have a
Japanese teacher.
F Karate? Well, I suppose thats less dangerous
than rugby!
M And on Friday I had to choose between tennis
and basketball. All my friends wanted to do
basketball so I decided to do that because dad
can teach me tennis at the weekend.
F But not on Saturdays because youll have team
practice and matches for hockey then.
M Oh thats right. I wont have much time for any

Id like to tell you all about our special summer

holiday activities for children at the Science
Museum today. This afternoon we have a special
show about fire. The children will find this very
exciting, but for younger children it may be a
little frightening so its only for 7 to 12 year olds.
Thats on in the main hall next to the main
entrance where you bought your tickets. The
cost for this show is 1.50 for adults and its free
for children. Unfortunately, because of safety
rules, children must have an adult with them.
The show lasts for one hour and starts at 2.30.
If you want to see the show you must get there
early because there is only space for fifty
children. Adults can stand at the back.
If you would like any more information about
the show, please come and ask me or any of
the other guides you see on your tour of the
museum. May I remind you that the museum
will close today at 6.30. Thank you for
