Washover Tools

Application
Washover operation involved the pipe string slip over the stuck fish. This operation
has been used if there is the case when the fish is hardly to grip. When this
happened, the drillers had to prepare the backup plan. The plan is using washover
tool or washpipe. Washover tool is made by larger diameter pipe and has cutting
surface at the tip. The function of the cutting surface is to grind the fish to a smooth
surface. Then drilling mud has to be pump into the well to remove the debris and
the remaining fish.

Features
The operation with washover pipe allowed the drill fluid to circulate through the
annulus between the fish and the inner wall of washover pipe. By including wash
pipe in the tool string, the mill face can reach over the body of the fish until it can
be pushed to bottom, or until the slips or retaining device can be milled out and the
fish retrieved.

Washover shoe: Act as the bit of the washover string. It crushes the rocks at the
circumstance of the fish.
Washover pipe: an accessory used in fishing operations to go over the outside of
tubing or drill pipe stuck in the hole because of cuttings, mud, and so forth, which
have collected in the annulus. The washover pipe cleans the annular space and
permits recovery of the pipe.
Drive sub: Provides the crossover connection between the drill pipe string and the
washover string.

Procedures
As we refer the main function of the washover pipe, it is used to release pipe that is
stuck in the hole. Fish diameter should lesser than internal diameter of the
washover pipe so that it will pass through it while drilling operation done. This
because the washover pipe must be at the outside of the fish or the stuck pipe. A

rotary shoe, or washover bits which cuts away the formation, mud, or whatever is
sticking the pipe, is made up on the bottom joint of the washover pipe, and the
assembly is lowered into the hole. Rotation of the assembly frees the stuck pipe.
Several washovers may have to be made if the stuck portion is very long.
