Installation
Battery Installation and PC58 Initialization:
All PC58 models are shipped with the battery installed. This preserves battery life when the unit is not in
service but requires that the PC58 hardware be initialized when the battery is installed. When using external
BATPACK, mount within 12" and plug connector into 3 position square posts (see Fig 1). Polarity is not a concern
because center is common.
To install the battery, begin by locating the battery holder. The PC58-2, 3 and 5 require opening the enclosure
cover and removing the PC58 to expose the battery holder.
The plus terminal of the battery is marked with a (+) symbol stamped into the battery holder. Be sure to install the
battery(ies) correctly.
Locate the initialize terminals on the PC58 PCB (see Fig1). Using a small length of wire, temporarily jumper
across the initialize terminals. The unit will respond by showing its software version number and then illuminating
the LCD display. See Programming Flowchart to setup desired operating parameters.
CAUTION : All PC58 models are provided with two or more sources of power. The power should not be interrupted when changing batteries. For models with two batteries, change one battery at a time. If all
power sources are interrupted, information will be lost and the unit will have to be re-initialized as
described above.

10 Point Linearization Option:

A 10 point linearization table is used to construct a curve describing the relationship of K-Factor and input
frequency. The measured input frequency is used to access the table. A linear interpolation of adjacent point pairs
is used to arrive at the K-Factor at that input frequency. The flow rate and total are then computed based upon the
K-Factor for that measurement sample.
NOTE: For best performance and resolution choose as many decimal places as possible in the K-Factor.
Example: Enter a K-Factor of 1 as 1.000.

Wiring
Several typical applications of the PC58 are shown below. Please observe that the various pulse inputs and power
options may be intermixed in many ways to solve common applications. The isolated pulse output may be freely
used so long as proper polarity is observed.
Caution: When 4-20 mA loop option is provided, the power wiring to the loop power option should always be to
terminals (+) 12 and (-) 11. Accidental wiring to (+) 12 and (-)6 should be avoided since excessive current
flow may result.
Caution: The magnetic pickup input and contact closure input require isolated sensors for proper operation.
Accidental connections to earth may result in erroneous operation of the analog output and/or excessive
current flow.
Caution: Accidental connections from circuit common (3 or 6) to earth or terminal (11) may result in erroneous
operation of the analog output and/or excessive current flow.

ent Code: (enter code) This prompt will only appear if the panel lock is ON. Press the key to increment

each digit. Press the key to step to the next digit to the left. Press the E key to enter the 4 digit
code. If the entered code is correct, the display will advance to the next menu prompt (CLr tot). If
incorrect, the display will return to the run mode.

Clr tot: (clear total) Clears (resets) the totalizer. Press the E key to clear the total and return to the run
mode. Press the M key to skip and advance to the next menu selection.

FAC nnUl: (factor multiplier) Sets the factor multiplier value. Press the key to select 1, 10, 100, 1000.
Press the E key to enter the displayed value.

fdeC: (factor decimal) Sets the decimal location for the factor. This location is restricted to 3 places
(59.999). The use of this decimal automatically limits the number of decimal locations allowable in the
rate and total to acceptable ranges. Press the key to move the decimal. Press the E key to select
the displayed decimal location.
NOTE: For best performance and resolution choose as many decimal places as possible in the K-Factor.
Example: Enter a K-Factor of 1 as 1.000.

faC lInear/10poInt: (factor type) This prompt will only appear if the unit is ordered with the 10 point
linearization option. The 10 poInt linearization selection is recommended for flow meters whose Kfactors change with different flow rates. This selection allows users to enter up to 10 different
frequencies(Fr 0 - Fr 9) with 10 corresponding K-factors (FAC 0 - FAC 9) for different flow rates.
Beginning with Fr 0, enter "0" for the first frequency. If all 10 points are not needed, you can enter "0"
for the frequency of any point to exit the 10 Point setup routine. This will save all of the values that
have been entered up to that point.
The lInear setting is used for flow meters whose output is linear over its' entire operating flow range.
Press the key to step to the desired choice. Press the E key to enter the displayed factor type.

No / yes set10pt: (set 10 point?) This prompt allows the user to skip the 10 point setup routine. Select
yes for initial setup or to change the present 10 point values. Select No to skip and keep the existing
values.

faC : (factor) This prompt appears on all units with linear inputs. The Factor is the number of pulses per
unit volume for the flow sensor. The pulses/unit volume is implied by the totalizer descriptor when a
descriptor is used. The implied units for the Factor are then as follows:
GAL

pulses/gallon

LIT

pulses/liter

FT3

pulses/ft3

M3

pulses/M3

Factors from 0.001 to 59999 may be used. A 0 value for the factor is not allowed and a warning
message will be given. The factor is displayed on the subsidiary (lower) display. Press the key to
increment each digit. Press the key to step to the next digit to the left. Press the E key to enter the
displayed factor.

Definitions

fr# : (frequency for point #) This prompt will only appear when 10 point selected. It sets the frequency
for each of the 10 points (#). Press the key to increment each digit. Press the key to step to the
next digit to the left. Press the E key to enter the desired frequency for the point #.

faC# : (factor for point #) This prompt will only appear when 10 point selected. It sets the factor for each

of the 10 points (#). Press the key to increment each digit. Press the key to step to the next digit
to the left. Press the E key to enter the desired factor for point #.
NOTE: The display will advance to the next point (Fr#) after each entry of the Fr & Fac until all 10 points
are complete. entering a 0 in the Fr or fac setting will advance the display to the next menu
prompt (tdec).

tdeC: (totalizer decimal) Sets the decimal location for the totalizer. The totalizer decimal is not a dummy
decimal and will scale the totalizer display accordingly. (i.e. if the tdec is set in the tenths position
(1234567.8), 100 will be displayed as 100.0). The location of the decimal point allows for greater
resolution of both the totalizer display and the pulse output. The pulse output advances at a rate
dependent on the least significant digit of the totalizer. The totalizer decimal location is restricted to a
maximum of 4 places (1234.5678). However, the number of totalizer decimal locations allowable is
reduced with each decimal place added to the factor decimal. Press the key to move the decimal.
Press the E key to enter the displayed decimal location.
Note:
The selection of the factor decimal point limits the available selections
for the number of decimal points available for the totalizer. This is automatic.
Enter your selection of the Factors decimal point before entering the totalizer
decimal point to assure the proper selection of the totalizer decimal point has
been made.

tot desC: (totalizer descriptor) This allows you to illuminate one of the available descriptors on the
display (GAL, LIT, FT3, M3 or "blank"). Press the key to select the descriptor. Press the E key to
enter the selected descriptor.

sCale: (ratemeter scaling) Sets the rate readout. Choose rate per hour (Hrs), minutes (nnIn) or seconds
(seC). The scale setting is shown on the main (upper) display. Press the key to step to the desired
choice. Press the E key to enter the displayed scale setting.
Note: A rate descriptor corresponding to the above choice will be illuminated on the display.

decimal is not a dummy decimal and will scale the rate display accordingly. (i.e. if the r decloc is set
in the tenths position (123.4), 100 will be displayed as 100.0). The ratemeter decimal location is
restricted to a maximum of 4 places (.1234). However, the number of ratemeter decimal locations
allowable is reduced with each decimal place added to the factor decimal. Press the key to move
the decimal. Press the E key to enter the displayed decimal location.
Note: The flow rate indicator will flash 59999 if the computed flow rate exceeds the 59999
display capability of the indicator. Choose a new decimal point location to avoid this.

Definitions

the unit will output 20 mA. Press the key to increment each digit. Press the key to step to the
next digit to the left. Press the E key to enter the displayed out hi value.

pUlseoUt: (pulse out divider) This allows the unit to output a pulse for each least significant total count
divided by the selected divider. The pulse out can be divided by 1 (d 1), 10 (d 10), 100 (d 100), or
turned off (off). With the divider set at 1, the unit will give a pulse out for every increment of the LSD
displayed.
Note: For maximum battery life, turn the pulse output off when pulse output is not used.
Selecting the proper pulse output divider may be needed so that the pulse output
does not exceed the maximum rate of the pulse output (10 Hz). If the pulse output
pulses too quickly a flashing display will result. Pressing the M key will result in a display of an
error message E PULSE. Press the E key to return to the run mode.

FrEQ.OUT: (pulse out frequency) Sets the pulse output frequency / duration. Selections are: 1, 2, 4 or 8
Hz. This menu item is skipped if pUlseoUt is turned off.

Operation

A suitable pulse producing device or flow meter is wired to one of the three pulse inputs provided on the PC58. Only
one of these inputs is used in a given application. There are no connections to the two unused pulse inputs.
Isolated magnetic pickups may be connected to terminals 1 and 2. Isolated contact closures may be connected to
terminals 5 and 6. Any pulse type may be connected to terminals 9(-) and 10(+).
Power to the unit may be provided by internal batteries, external DC, or the current loop. In all cases, the internal
battery will provide for continued operation in the event primary power is lost.
Once properly wired, the operation of the PC58 is automatic.
The flow totalizer is updated every 2 seconds* with the latest total. If no input counts are received the unit remains
in a low power state to conserve power.
The flow total may be cleared by the front panel switch sequence or by a contact closure on the remote reset
terminal to circuit common.
To reset the unit from the front panel, the following key sequence is required:
Press M CLr tot will be displayed (if the panel lock is on, the display will prompt "ent code".
Enter the proper code to advance to the clr tot prompt)
Press E To clear the total. Unit will return to operation
The flow rate indicator will measure the flow rate once every 2 seconds* and display the flow rate.
If the input pulses are not detected within the delay setting (0.1 to 8.0 seconds), a flow rate of 0 will be indicated.
The analog output will be scaled based on the user selected zero and full scale and the measured flow rate. The
analog output is updated every 2 seconds*.
The pulse output will generate a burst of pulses every 2 seconds* in accordance with the instrument setup of pulse
scaling.
* A large delay setting and internal math operations may delay the update rate.

Maintenance:
The only scheduled maintenance for the PC58 is periodic replacement of the battery.
Battery Replacement:
The PC58 has a battery monitor feature which illuminates when the lithium battery voltage approaches its end of
life. A descriptor, BAT, illuminates when the battery voltage falls below this predetermined value. The low
battery detector operates correctly with all power options.
The battery, or batteries, should be replaced within several weeks of the first occurrence of low battery warning,
BAT. Left unattended, the unit may become inaccurate, cease to operate or loose setup information or
malfunction.
Batteries should be replaced one at a time to avoid interrupting the power.
See INSTALLATION section for battery installation instructions.

Error Messages
The PC58 is provided with extensive self checking which assists the user in the location of setup entry errors and
in reporting malfunctions or unusual operating conditions. When an error occurs, the display will flash. Press any
key to see the error message corresponding to the error that has occurred. Press any key again to acknowledge
the error. (If the error can be eliminated by a change of setup values, the unit will automatically advance to the
MENU so that the appropriate setup changes can be made).

FPP Meters Superior Meter Accuracy and Reliability Results from Two
Close-Fitting Oval Gears within A Precision Measuring Chamber
About FPP Meters
FPP Meters, formerly Fluid Power Products, is now a
tradename of Tuthill Transfer Systems. FPP was
established in 1980. Since its inception, the company
has been dedicated to manufacturing cost-effective
high performance flow metering devices for petroleum,
industrial, commercial, and municipal service.

electronic. The output for mini oval gear meters is

electronic.
In the mechanical meter, the output shaft drives a gear
train that provides a registration in engineering units.
In the electronic version of the meter, magnets
mounted in the rotors actuate a switch. Each
switch closure represents a precise increment of
volume. The switch output can then be used as an
input to a variety of electronics including scaling
counters, batch controllers, computers, analog converters, etc. The combination of accuracy, low cost and
few moving parts makes the FPP Meters mini oval
gear meters a natural for your metering applications.

Our facilities include computerized order entry and

inventory control so that you are assured accurate and
prompt deliveries. Furthermore, our production
personnel ensure that each order, regardless of size,
receives individual attention.
Constant attention to new product development and
production design, our high standards of manufacture
and final testing are the reasons why FPP Meters meet
your most demanding requirements.

Fluid Compatibility

Our meters are used in batching, blending, process

control and dispensing of liquid products in all liquid
handling industries.

If in doubt about compatibility of a specified fluid,

contact our manufacturing plant or see Chemical
Compatibility Chart to check compatibility of chemicals
to the wetted materials.

Principle of Operation
Elliptical-shaped rotors are used to accurately measure
liquid flow by precisely sweeping a known volume of
liquid through a close tolerance measuring chamber.
The meshed rotors seal the inlet from the outlet flow,
developing a small pressure differential. As the rotors
rotate, they trap a precise quantity of liquid in the area
between the rotor and the measuring chamber wall.
The total quantity of flow for one rotation of the rotor
pair is four times the volume trapped between the rotor
and the measuring chamber wall. Close tolerance
machining of the rotors and the measuring chamber
means minimum slippage and high accuracy which is
essentially unaffected by changes in viscosity. The
rate of flow through the meter is proportional to the
rotational speed of the rotors. Therefore, the meter
output is directly proportional to the rate of flow. The
output for Stealth meters can be either mechanical or

Installation & Operation

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

Thermal relief valves are recommended and should be

installed whenever it is possible to block the meter
between two valves. Thermal pressures many times the
operating pressure are possible with only a small rise in
temperature.

Make sure that all necessary safety precautions

have been taken including proper clothing,
personal safety equipment and fire safety
equipment if required.

It is recommended that a strainer be installed

upstream of each meter to prevent damage from foreign
matter, such as weld slag, pipe scale, etc.

Before Start-up of Meter Make Certain:

1. The meter is properly mounted, secured and
piped.
2. All connections are tight.
3. All bleed and drain valves are closed.
4. Do NOT smoke near meter or use meter near
an open flame when metering flammable
fluids. Fire could result.
5. This meter is not intended for use with fluids
for human consumption.

Calibration means should be provided during installation. An

easy means for diverting flow into a calibration vessel should
be considered.
Hydraulic shock like thermal expansion can be harmful to
meter components. Consideration should be given to
designing pumping piping systems to eliminate hydraulic
shock.

Operation

Install the Meter and Accessories in

Compliance with All Applicable Local, State and
Federal Construction, Electrical and Safety
Codes.

Fill the system slowly to avoid operation on air or vapor. This

can be accomplished in the following manner:
1.

Installation

2.

Positive displacement meters are designed to operate full of

liquid. The meter should be installed in a manner such that
it remains full of liquid at all times.

Throttle the meter inlet valve, and allow to fill slowly by

gravity.
Crack open the outlet valve, start the pump, then slowly
crack open the inlet valve and fill the meter slowly
before fully opening the inlet and outlet valves.

The meter is not designed to operate on air, but the design

and materials of construction allow for operation on vapor for
short periods of time without damage to the elliptical gears or
meter internals.

Protective caps installed in each meter at the time of

shipment should remain in the openings until you are ready
to install in the piping system.
Prior to meter installation, the piping system should be
flushed to remove all debris. Apply pipe compound to the
male threads, to install the companion flanges.

Note: Over-speed and hammer caused by the presence

of vapor in the system can cause internal damage to the
meter.

Install the companion flanges. Tighten to a position that

allows the meter to bolt to the companion flanges, free
of pipe stress. The meter should always be supported
by bolting to a platform. Never use the connecting pipe
as the means of support.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
The meters non-shock Maximum Operating
Pressure is indicated on the meter name plate.
The meter should never be operated in excess of
this pressure. Care should be taken to eliminate
thermal and hydraulic shock pressures so that
they do not exceed the meters Maximum
Working Pressure design.

When installing the meter consider future maintenance, and

install in the best location available to facilitate future meter
maintenance. The meter can be disassembled and serviced
in place, and provisions for service should be considered
during installation.
For the best accuracy, install the meter so that the gear
shafts are positioned in a horizontal plane, rotating without
the weight of the gear resting on the body or cover of the
meter as shown on page 1. In critical installations block
valves and by-pass lines are recommended. This allows the
meter to be serviced without interruption of flow in critical
process application.

Operating the meter in excess of its maximum design flow

can cause excessive wear or premature failure. However,
the meter can be calibrated to operate below the minimum
design flow rate as indicated on the meter name plate if the
flow remains constant, or the product is viscous.
2

Reversing the Meter Registration

The meter is configured for left
to right flow, unless
specified differently at the time
of order. A label with the word
INLET is placed on the inlet
flange. Flow direction is
determined while facing the
front of the meter register.

u Remove dust cover (see page 5).

Observe the position of the face gear
(top 11b and the packing gland pinion gear
(11b). See servicing the drive
components (page 5).

17
22

u Remove the retaining clip (25) with a

screwdriver or pliers.

24

11b

If the meter is equipped with a

strainer, or strainer air
26
eliminator combination, the
strainer must be located on the
17
inlet side of the meter. If the
meter is equipped with a valve,
the valve must be positioned on the outlet side of
the meter.

u Loosen the set screw (17)

shaft bushing (26).

11b

u Slide the calibrator drive shaft

bushing (26) out of the right angle drive housing
(17).
u Remove

the adjuster drive shaft assembly, from

the right angle drive housing (17).

When the meter is first installed, check the

register. If the meter and packing gland pinion
output shaft is turning, but the register is not
turning, or if the register is turning backward, you
must reverse the direction of registration by
reversing the position of the face gear (11b).

u Remove the face gear (11b) and turn it 180 so

that the gear teeth are facing in the direction
opposite the original installation.

Reversing the direction of rotation of the

calibrator drive shaft (11b) is accomplished by
the following method:
u Reversing the position of the face gear (top 11b)
relative to the packing gland pinion gear (11b).

u Reassemble the parts in reverse order. Make

sure the calibrator drive shaft bushing flange (26)
is tight against right angle drive housing (17). Tighten
hex nut (27) and re-install retaining clip (25) in the
appropriate groove. Inspect to insure there is

Adjusting the Calibrator

Meters equipped with mechanical registers may
have a mechanical calibrator. If so, the calibrator
can be used to easily adjust the meter output so
that the mechanical registration matches precisely
the volume delivered to a meter prover:
u

u When the prover volume is less than the meter

register, add the percentage to the original
calibrator setting by turning the knob in the
direction of the arrow marked + volume on the
calibrator. Each click on the calibrator represents
a .03% increment.

Remove the dust cover (18), see page 5.

Check the meter registration by delivering a

known volume of product into an accurate prover.
Perform several tests to verify the meter
repeatability.

u When the prover volume is more than the

meter register volume, subtract the percentage
from the original calibrator setting by turning the
knob in the direction of the arrow marked volume on the calibrator.

u Record the meter reading determined in the

above step.

u Make several prover runs to check meter

accuracy and repeatability.

Note the volume in the prover.

Each click of the calibrator represents a .03%
increment. There are two clicks per division on
the adjustment dial. Run product through the
meter to allow the calibrator to adjust to the new
setting.

Servicing the Meter

Avoid pipe strain and stress when making meter
repairs. The weight of the piping and the meter
should be supported independently. This means
that the meter can be serviced without affecting
the piping alignment.
