OSI Model Purpose and Layers Functions

OSI is the acronym of Open Systems Interconnection adopted by International Organization

of Standards. This is a type of reference model to describe various ways, by which
applications communicate over a particular network. Furthermore, many top engineering
colleges in India 2015 also called it a conceptual framework that allows understanding
different types of relationships in well manner. Main objective of OSI reference model is to
provide necessary guidelines to web developers and vendors to allow inter operation and
clear comparisons of software programs and digital communication products in between
large numbers of communication tools.
Concept of OSI Model
Prime concept of an OSI model is to divide the communication process in between two
different endpoints belonging to the entire telecommunication network into seven different
categories of related layers and functions. Here, each of the communicating program or user
of a computer is able to provide seven layers of proper function. According to professors of
Shri Ram engineering college, message in between users contains flow of data in
downward direction from layers present in source computer across the whole network and
later on, from layers present in receiver computer system.
Now, let us go for detailed information about each layer of OSI model under the supervision
of top engineering colleges in India 2015.
Layer 1:First layer of the mdoel is the Physical layer, which primarily conveys stream of bits via
network at radio, electrical and optical levels. Even the layer provides suitable hardware to
send and receive data over any carrier network.
Layer 2:Data link layer is the second layer of the model that sets up suitable links across varying
physical networks and put packets into different network frames. Here, you will also find two
sub-layers as Media Access Control and Logical Link Control layers.
Layer 3:Network layer i.e. the third layer deals with routing and addressing of data i.e. sending data
to the right destination and in right direction over ongoing transmission facilities, while
receiving incoming transmissions at packet levels.
Layer 4:Faculty members of Shri Ram engineering college said that the fourth layer of OSI model
is the Transport Layer, whose main role is to manage data packets to allow their proper
delivery, along with checking necessary errors present in information once it comes.
Layer 5:-

Fifth layer of OSI model is session layer, which establishes, coordinates and later on
terminates conversations. Prime services under this layer will include reconnection and
authentication activities.
Layer 6:Presentation layer is the sixth layer of Open Systems Interconnection model, which converts
both outgoing and incoming data from a particular type of presentation format to other one.
Layer 7:Seventh or the last layer of the model is Application Layer that identifies various
communication partners and at the same time, assess suitable network capability to create
anything to transmit or open to allow receiving of things.
