Proteus MX Quick Start Guide

This document will help direct you through the intial power-up and configuration of
your Proteus MX radio terminal. Refer to this guide once you have completed the
physical installation of the Signal Processing and RF units. For detailed installation
instructions, please consult the Proteus MX System Installation Manual - Section 2.

Power
This step applies to the Signal Processing Unit (SPU) as well as the indoor
mounted RF Unit (RFU). Outdoor RF units (ODUs) receive power from the SPU
over the IF cable. SPUs may be powered from either the front or from the rear
power connectors - both should not be connected simultaneously.

2.
3.

CAUTION:
Before applying power to the radio terminal, ensure the IF to RFU/ODU cable is
securely connected and the waveguide port at the RFU/ODU is properly terminated
to avoid possible shock and exposure to potentially hazardous radiation.

REMEMBER:
Always connect the positive pin of the power plug to the positive
terminal of the power supply (and negative to negative) regardless of
the grounding. Connect the desired supply line to ground at the power
supply to determine the system polarity.

Before You Begin

Power Plug

Power Plugs (supplied with radio)

Slotted Screwdriver (1/8, 3mm)
Power Wiring (16 AWG recommended)

DC Power Supply providing 20 to 60 volts with negative or

positive polarity (+/- 20-60 VDC).

Note: Any power supply or protection device used with Proteus

MX must be able to handle an in-rush current 28A for up
to 1 ms (- 48V) or 5A for up to 4 ms (24V).

PC or Laptop capable of supporting Proteus

Element Manager (EM) or VT100 Terminal
Emulation software.
Proteus MX USB flash drive (supplied).

Please have the following parts and tools available before applying power to
your Proteus MX terminal:

Check the polarity of your supply leads.

Wire the GND pin of the power plug to facility ground.
Do not jumper the GND pin to the return pin of the power plug. This may
result in improper grounding and affect operation of the radio terminal.
With power off, connect positive and negative supply leads to the power
plug as shown in the illustration below.

Use an ohmmeter to verify that no shorts exist between ground and DC

points on the power connector.
Plug connector into SPU or RFU and apply power. Confirm that the SPU
power LED illuminates.

Grounding Notes:
Proper grounding is critical to radio operation. Ensure the rack is tied to the
facility ground and all rack-mounted hardware is solidly grounded to the
equipment rack, either through a rack ground bar or with a separate ground
cable connected to one of the ground points provided on the chassis.
Outdoor mounted RF Units (ODU) should be grounded with 6-AWG or larger
copper wire to a tower ground point.
CAUTION:
Do not connect or disconnect the SPU to RFU Cable with DC power
applied. This cable carries DC voltage and accidentally shorting
the center pin will blow the fuse in the SPU power supply!

Connect To Radio
The COMPUTER port on the SPU front panel provides serial access for radio maintenance. The initial connection to the Proteus MX terminal should be made from this
port to avoid possible complications arising from factory preset IP addresses. A USB-to-DB9 converter (not supplied) may be required for computers without a DB9
connector. Please refer to the User Installation Manual - Section 2.18 - Table 2-6 for more information about wiring and connector pin-out.

2.

Configure one of the PC Serial Ports for:

19.2 kbps, 8 data bits, even parity, 1 start bit, 1 stop bit, no flow control.
Connect the PC serial port to the Proteus MX DB9 connector labelled COMPUTER.

Element Manager
MNI recommends using the supplied Element Manager (EM) application to interface
with Proteus MX radios. This tool provides a simple-to-use graphical interface for
complete configuration, control, and monitoring of any radio in the network.
1.
2.

The Element Manager must be installed on a laptop or PC prior to first use. To do

so, follow the instructions found on the USB flash drive included with the radio.
After successfull installation, simply double-click the icon to launch the EM. After
a brief splash screen, the radio Login dialog should appear.

Logging On to a Radio Terminal

Two log-on identities are available: admin and guest. The
admin log-on allows the user to make changes to the radio
configuration. The guest log-on allows monitoring terminal
operation but does not allow configuration changes.

Command Line Interface:

As an alternative, each terminal has an embedded text-based Command Line Interface
shell which can be accessed by a PC through a VT-100 terminal emulation program.

2.

Configure the terminal emulation software to connect using the PC serial port
selected earlier. If the software requires, duplicate the serial settings from above.
Run the terminal emulation software and wait for the radio Login prompt.

Configure Radio
Factory Configuration:
All Proteus MX Radios are tested as working links in the factory prior to shipment.
Each radio terminal is configured with standard factory settings that allow basic radio
operation, but are not optimized for individual network, routing, or path requirements.
MNI recommends that each radio link be completely configured before connecting any
data traffic or management information from the network.

Additional Configuration:
The Proteus AMT MX Installation Manual, on the USB thumb drive included with
each radio terminal, provides additional detailed information on installation and
configuration, including: IP addresses, VLAN configuration, integrated loop switching,
tributary cross-connect, performance monitoring, and other radio features.
