A. What Is an Operating System?

An operating system is the most important software that runs on a computer. It manages
the computers memory, processes, and all of its software and hardware. It also allows you to
comminicate with the computer without knowing how to speak the computers language
without an operating system, a computer is useless.
B. The Operating systems job
youhave probably heard the pharase boot your computer. Booting is the process that occurs
when you press the power buttom to trun your computer. During this process, the computer
several things:
It runs tests to make sure everthing is working corectly.
It cheeks for new hardware
It then starts up the operating system

C. Type of Operating System

Most people use the operating system that comes with their computer. Buat it is possible to
upgrade or even change operating system. Modern operating systems use a graphichal user
interface, or GUI (pronounced gooey) A GUI lets you use your mouse to clik icons , buttons,
and nemus, nad everthing is clearly displayed on screen using combination of grafhics and text.
Before GUI, computers had a command-line interface, which meant the user had to type every
single command to the computer, and computer would only display text.
There most common operating systems of PC (personal computer) are

1. Microsoft Windows
Microsoft created the windows operation system in the mid-1980s. Over the
years, there have been many different version of windows, but the most
recent ones are windows 8 (released in 2012), windows 7 (2009), and
windows vista (2007). Windows comes preloaded on most new PCs, which
helps to make it the most popular operating system In the world If you buying a new
computer or upgrade to a newaer version of windows, you can choose from several different
edition of windows, such as home premium, profesional, and ultimate.

2. Mac Os X
Mac

OS is a line of operating system created by apple inc. it comes preloaded on

all

new macintosh computers, or macs. All of the recent version are know as Mac

OS

X (pronounced Mac O-S Ten), and their specific version names are mountain
lion (2012), lion (2011), And snow leonpard (2009). Apple also offers a

version called Mac OS X server.

According to Statcounter global stats, mac OS X user account for 7.5% of the operating
systems market as of january 2013 much lower than the percentage of windows users (over
90%).

3. Linux
Linux (pronounce LINN-ux) is a family of Opensource operating system, which means that
they can be modifed and distributed by anyone around the world. This is
very diferefnt from proprientary software like windows, which can only be
modifed by the company that owns it (microsoft). The advanteges of linux are that is free,
and there are many different distributions that you can choose from. Each distribution has a
different look and feel, and the most populer one include UBUNTU, mint, Fedora. Linux
name after linus torvalds, who created the linux karnel in 1991. the karnel is the computer
code that is the central part of an Operating system.

4. Mobile Devices
Mobile devices such as phones, tablet computers, and mp3 playerd are very
different from desktop and laptop computers, so they run operating
systems that are designed specifically for mobile devices. Excemple
of mobile devices operating systems include apple iOS, Windows Phone, and google
android.
