Product note

Modular induction traction motors

What applications are these motors suitable for?

ABB modular induction traction motors are used for distributed power drive of a wide range of train types including light
rail vehicles (LRVs), underground and overground metros,
diesel or electric multiple units (DMUs or EMUs), high-speed
trains (HSTs) and very high-speed trains (VHSTs).
What characterizes this motor type?
This motor type is designed specifically to ensure reliable
operation and high torque output as required in traction
applications. The induction motor topology is a simple and
robust design that has been proven to deliver high reliability
in suburban and intercity traction applications, characterized
by frequent starts and stops and high acceleration.
What characterizes ABBs motor range?
Based on a single modular concept, ABB can design a variety
of motor configurations using standard components. The
modular concept simplifies the procurement, sourcing, design
and manufacturing of these motors, while contributing to
the motors compact design and high torque-weight ratio.
Modular features include scalable design, different cooling
methods and flexible bogie mounting arrangements. The
motors are designed to endure extreme temperatures and
polluted environments.

How is the motor customized?

Each motor is designed and optimized for the actual train
line profile in which it will operate, taking into account environmental and other running conditions. Motors are delivered
according to specification regarding cooling method, mounting arrangement and other modular features. The motors are
available in the 100900 kW range covering most low and
medium power traction applications. See reverse page for
motor performance charts.
What about service and support?
Train operators benefit from simplified maintenance due to
the motors modular design based on standard components.
Support is provided from initial concept to maintenance.
ABBs network of service workshops provides global coverage. The service organization has broad experience of
electric motors, generators and their applications and can
thus provide improved operational availability and life cycle
profitability.
Main benefits
Modular and flexible concept
Compact and reliable design
Short lead times
Global service network
