Displacement reactions

The reactivity of the metal decreases as we move down the

group. This can be shown by looking at displacement
reactions.
A substitution or displacement reaction is a chemical change in which
atoms of one element replace the atoms of another element from the
molecules of a compound. Elements which are higher in the Activity Series
displace those elements which are placed below them.
When chlorine (as a gas or dissolved in water) is added to
sodium bromide solution the chlorine takes the place of the
bromine. Because chlorine is more reactive than bromine, it
displaces bromine from sodium bromide. The solution turns
brown. This brown colour is the displaced bromine. The chlorine
has gone to form sodium chloride.
If you look at the equation, you can see that the Cl and Br have
swapped places.
chlorine + sodium bromide sodium chloride + bromine
Cl2(aq) + 2NaBr(aq) 2NaCl(aq) + Br2(aq)
Reactivity series
Reactive series is a type of chemical league table using criteria
that scientist agrees about. It shows the metal in order, with the
most reactive on top. To decide where a metal comes in the table
we need to look at wether it reacts with oxygen, water and acids.
A more reactive halogen displaces a less reactive halogen from a
solution of one of its salts.

On a disco night, Sarah Sulphur was invited to the winter dance by a

guy called Cory Copper to be his partner . They went to the disco hand
in hand in hand together
At the disco, as Sarah sulphur and Cory copper were having a good
time, Isaac Iron came to the disco alone. He was much more attractive
and handsome than Cory Copper
When Isaac Iron saw Sarah sulphur, he flirted with her, so after a while,
they fell deeply in love
Poor, Cory Copper was lonely after Sarah sulphur went away with Isaac
Iron.
Explanation
Copper sulphate plus iron = iron sulphate + copper
When an iron nail is placed into the beaker of blue solution -copper
sulphate, the iron reacts with copper sulphate. As Iron are more
reactive than copper, it displaces copper to make the solution from
copper sulphate( CuSO4) to Iron Sulphate (FeSO4). So after the
reaction the iron nail will sort of rust as there are layer of copper
covering it. Moreover the solution will turn green to blue.
Urther Explaination
Iron (Fe) is more reactive than copper (cu) because iron has 4 unpaired
electrons in the 3rd subshell but copper hasonly 1. So we say the

copper has a stable configuration due to filled d-orbaitls and iron

doesnt have fully filled d-oritals, this irons is more reactive
After the reaction, the iron nail became iron oside ( feo3 ) the beaker of
blue liquid not only turned a little green but as iron has adapted the
compound place of copper.

Molecule and Atoms

A molecule is formed when two or more atoms join together
chemically. A compound is a molecule that contains at least two
different elements. All compounds are molecules but not all
molecules are compounds.
copper sulphate( CuSO4) to Iron Sulphate (FeSO4)- both compounds
because the contains sulphate and either copper and iron.

In chemistry, mass is always conserved. This is a very good

approximation as any energy gain or release during chemical
reactions only converts immeasurably small amounts of mass to
energy, or vice versa (according to E = m*c^2).
Provided you prevent the water in the beaker from evaporating,
the mass of the beaker should remain constant, especially since
no gases are evolved during this specific reaction.
