FOREWORD
This document is equivalent to the RENAULT SAS and RENAULT VI Groups documents D45 1333.
It must not be modified without prior consultation with the Normalisation Department of these Groups.
It is in conformity with the agreement reached between these Groups and PSA PEUGEOT CITROEN in
October 2003.
It allows tests to be performed in conformity with USA regulation FMVSS No302 and norme
NF ISO 3795.
2. PRINCIPLE
Ignite the end of a test specimen held horizontally by U shaped jaws. Observe the type on combustion and
determine the speed of combustion between the two reference marks.
3. EQUIPMENT
3.1. COMBUSTION CHAMBER
The combustion chamber, preferably in stainless steel, of internal dimensions 381 mm x 356 mm x 203 mm
(see appendix 1).
The front face of this chamber comprises a fire-proof observation window which may cover the whole front
face and which may also be used as an access panel.
The lower face of the chamber is pierced with 10 holes, of 19 mm diameter for ventilation, the upper part
comprises a ventilation opening 12,7 mm high all around.
The chamber rests on four legs 10 mm high. On one side, the chamber may include an orifice for the
introduction of the trimmed test specimen, on the opposite side, an opening provides an entry for the gas inlet
pipe. The melted material is collected in a tray placed at the bottom of the chamber between the ventilation
holes without covering them.
During the actual test, this combustion chamber must be placed in an enclosure at a temperature of
-1
23C 5C and an air speed V < 0,05 m s ; it may be placed under a laboratory hood (3.12.) designed to
evacuate the combustion fumes.

mm internal diameter.
This burner is placed in the combustion chamber so that the centre of the nozzle is 19 mm 1 mm below the
centre of the lower edge of the test specimen.
3.5. TEST GAS
The gas supplied to the burner must have a calorific value of approximately 38 MJ/m 3 (for example natural gas).
3.6. CONDITIONED ENCLOSURE
at 23C 2C and 50% 5% relative humidity.
3.7. CHRONOMETER.
Two chronometers, accurate to 0,5 s, for the application of norme NF ISO 3795 or accurate to 1 s in other
cases.
3.8. MEASURING INSTRUMENT,
rule accurate to 0,5 mm.
3.9. OVEN WITH CIRCULATING AIR,
capable of reaching a temperature of 100C 2C or any other temperature specified by the manufacturer for
ageing.
3.10. HUMID OVEN,
regulated to 40C 2C and 95% 5% relative humidity.
3.11. METAL COMB
with 7 to 8 teeth, with rounded points, every 25 millimetres and a length of at least 110 mm.

For test specimens with a width between 60 mm and 102 mm, the length must be at least 140 mm. In
this case, the available combustion distance corresponds to the length of the test specimen, the
measurement commencing at the first reference mark.
Test specimens of a width less than 60 mm and a length less than 356 mm, as well as those with a
width between 60 mm and 100 0+2 mm, but with a length less than 138 mm, and those with a width of
less than 3 mm, cannot be tested by this method.

Material A has a contact surface not adhering to that of material B and is tested separately. One section of
material B is, at the most, 13 mm from the space constituting the passenger compartment and materials B and
C adhere to each of the contact points; therefore B and C are tested as a composite material. The cut is made
in the material, as shown in the above figure, so as to obtain a test specimen 13 mm thick.
4.4. WHEN IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO OBTAIN A FLAT TEST SPECIMEN
because the part being tested is curved, cut out the test specimen so that its thickness does not exceed13 mm
at any point.

100 h at 40C 2C and 95% 2% relative humidity in the oven (3.10.) for the second series,
5. METHOD OF OPERATION
This method of operation applies to new or aged test specimens, according to the requirements of the
manufacturer.
In the case of USA regulation FMVSS-No302, carry out the test without the grille. If the test specimen has a
tendency to sag, do the test again with the grille and take into account this last result.
5.1. PLACE THE TEST SPECIMEN IN THE SAMPLE HOLDER (3.2.),
according to Appendix 5, so that the two sides and one end are held by the arms of the sample holder, and so
that the free end is where the first idenification line is drawn, in conformity with Appendix 2; the surface of the
test specimen which is closest to the passenger compartment must be turned towards the base.
When both faces are close to the passenger compartment, each face must be tested.
Place the whole assembly in the centre of the combustion chamber (3.1.). Check that the test specimen is
actually horizontal.
Adjust the Bunsen burner (3.4.) so that the height of the flame is 38 mm. The burner air inlet is closed.
The flame must burn for 1 min in order to stabilise, before the commencement of the test.
Start the chronometer (3.7.) when the test specimen is in contact with the flame, extinguish it at the end of 15
seconds.
Note : Check the time taken between the cutting off of the gas and the extinction of the flame.
5.2. START THE SECOND CHRONOMETER
when the front of the flame reaches the first reference mark 38 mm from the free end. Observe the propagation
of the flame front on the face that burns quickest (upper or lower face). Note the time t (in seconds) necessary
for the flame front to reach the second reference mark 254 mm from the first.
Note all peculiarities in the combustion of the material, such as flash on the surface, irregular propagation,
slow combustion, combustion with fumes, formation of droplets, different combustion speeds in the different
layers of the test specimen, separation of the layers, etc.
5.3. IF THE FLAME IS EXTINGUISHED NATURALLY
before the second reference mark, determine the time t for this combustion. Using the rule (3.8.) measure length L
of the test specimen which has been burnt (in millimetres), which means the greatest distance travelled by the
flame front starting from the first reference mark.
Note also all the peculiarities of combustion.

6. EXPRESSION OF RESULTS
6.1. TYPE OF COMBUSTION
Non combustible
Type A : the material refuses to burn or else is extinguished as soon as the flame front is no longer in
contact with the Bunsen burner.
Self- Extinguishable
Type B : The material burns, but the combustion stops before the flame as reached the first
reference mark.
Type C : The material burns, but ceases to burn less than 60 seconds after starting the chronometer,
and has not burnt more than 50 millimetres from the first reference mark.
Type D : The material burns, but the flame is extinguished between the two reference
marks, except in the preceding case.
Combustible
Type E : The combustion continues as far as the second reference mark.
If combustion has reached the second reference mark, type E, the combustion speed V, expressed in
millimetres per minute (mm/min) for each test specimen is obtained by means of the following formula :
60
V = 254 .
t
where : t = duration of the combustion, in seconds, to burn 254 mm (distance between reference marks).
If the combustion has stopped before the second reference mark, type D or if the size of the sample
nd
does not allow the application of the 2 . reference mark at 254 mm from the first, the combustion
speed V, expressed in millimetres per minute (mm/min) is obtained by means of the following formula :
60
V ' = L.
t'

7. TEST REPORT
As well as the results obtained, the test report must indicate :
the reference of the material tested and the name of the Supplier,
the dimensions of the test specimen, if it is different from the values shown in 4.1.,
the ageing conditions, if they are different from those shown in 4.10.,
the test results on each test specimen : type and speed of combustion, the longitudinal or lateral
direction and any peculiarities of the combustion,
indicate the conformity to norme NF ISO 3795 or regulation FMVSS-No302 (for the hood, the number of
test specimens and the chronometer).
the operating details not specified in the method as well as any possible incidents likely to have
affected the results.
Note :
Use the test report in Appendix 5, if specified in the validation drawings or technical record sheets.
The test report must be kept for a minimum of 10 years. Archived test reports may be consulted by
interested parties.
