Productivity Perspectives
Dedicated to the proposition oil and water
wont mix
Industrial America used to throw oil and water
together with abandon. That led to the development of industrial oil skimmers, which have
ways to take advantage of the two luid substances well-publicized aversion to each other.
Less of this throwing together occurs today,
due to well-recognized wastewater issues,
amongst other reasons. Yet this greater awareness hasnt led to general idleness amongst oil
skimmers. The same sensitivities that culminate
in less mixing have also brought to the table
new, both broadly commercial and unforeseen
niche applications.
Such is life at the Chagrin Falls, Ohio-based
Oil Skimmer Division of Abanaki Corp., says
Simon Bennett, VP of sales & marketing and
long-time company veteran. Its a simple principle that cant be beat, Bennett says. A belt,
held between two pulleys removes primary contamination prior to iltration.
Exploiting surface tensions
Oil skimmers work by making use of the differences in speciic gravity and surface tension
between oil and water. Its used in steel mills.
In manufacturing plants its used to skim loating
oils from wastewater sumps. Its used in papermaking, food processing and wastewater industries, Bennett says.
Because ilters are such a large capital
expense, Bennett says, he knows of food processors that have vacuum trucks come in to
skim the top off of collection pits. In some

WHAT'S IN MY BIN?
Understand bin level accuracy and why multi-point
trumps single-point measurement
By Jenny Nielson Christensen
For any means to the monitoring of bin, tank
or silo inventories, a irst question invariably
asked is, How accurate is it?
Unfortunately, its a loaded question. It cant
be answered easily. But heres a discussion
about why its a tough question, and what can
be expected from a level-monitoring system.
First to consider is the type of device used.
Bobs, guided-wave radar, open-air radar and
ultrasonic level sensors are the common currency. What's common is a measurement taken
from a single point in the vessel. installed properly any can be expected to perform to stated
measurement accuracy.
But, what does the stated accuracy of measurement mean? For a single-point device,
accuracy is often expressed based on the
distance measured from the tank tops sensor
to the material surface. This distance is often
referred to as headroom, because it delineates how much space is left in the bin. This can

Inherent inaccuracies when converting a volume calculation to a mass calculation are due
to bulk-density variations, regardless of whether
single-point or multi-point measuring is used.
Volume calculation accuracy impacts mass calculation accuracy.
With so many variables, single-point levelmeasurement device makers struggle to pinpoint
how accurate the calculated mass value will be.
However, with accurate vessel geometry, strategic sensor placement of the sensor, and a good
average bulk density, mass accuracy of around 8
percent to 15 percent can be expected.
Multi-point accuracy
Unlike traditional devices that measure distance from a single point, a 3DLevelscanner
from BinMaster measures from multiple points
within the silo to determine bin material volume.
Measurement points are not averaged to calculate bin volume. Instead, each point is weighted
for relevancy. A complex algorithm calculates the
bins true material volume. By this means variations across the topography of the material surface are taken into account through measuring
and mapping of high and low points.
The scanner conigures an accurate threedimensional proile of the storage materials top
surface. This is a beneit when there are materialsurface variations due to multiple ill and discharge points, or with materials such as powders
that do not ill or discharge symmetrically.
Volume accuracy remains dependent upon vessel dimension accuracy and sensor placement.
When converting volume to mass, inherent inaccuracies persist due to bulk density variables.
But, the improved accuracy of the volume calculation will improve mass calculation accuracy.
Given correct vessel geometry and proper sensor placement, you can expect volume accuracy
of 3 percent to 5 percent. When combined with
a good average bulk density, the accuracy of the
mass may be around 5 percent to 10 percent.
Established in 1953, BinMaster makes solidstate point and continuous bin level indicator
and control systems and sensor devices.

If leakage current is less than drop-out current, the valve is not affected.
standard valve power levels, supervisory and leakage currents can prevent proper valve closing.
Testing the currents
Supervisory or leakage current wont necessarily impact solenoid valve
operation. How do you know whether it is or not?
One simple ield test is an initial indicator for most affected applications. With a normally closed (NC) valve, the problem manifests when
the solenoid sticks open, even though the output module is turned
off. A user can tap the valve lightly, or slightly lift the solenoid. This
helps overcome the magnetic force generated by supervisory or leakage
current, releasing the valve core and returning the valve to closed. If a
tap or lift allows the valve to shift, a problem probably exists.
To conirm, employ an amp meter or current probe. With the I/O
module off, check for current output. If current is detected, its a
supervisory/leakage current situation. For modules that pulse current,

If leakage current is great enough, the valve will stick in the open position.
mode, the I/O module checks for open circuits only when in the on
state. Here again, the valve will not turn on inappropriately.
In existing installations, for leakage current, try applying a loading
resistor. Unlike supervisory current, leakage current cannot be managed
via software settings. Primarily caused by electrical ilters built into the
I/O module to guard against electrical anomalies, leakage current is
present 100 percent of the time in the off state.
However, PLC and DCS makers often recommend using a loading
resistor. With a particular resistance and wattage in parallel with the
valve, the resistor absorbs excess current, and ensures that across the
valve it remains below the off state drop-out current. This eliminates
or limits problematic leakage-current effects. Adding a resistor is by far
the simplest solution, especially if the output modules are in a controlroom marshalling cabinet.
Maker resistor value and wattage vary depending on leakage magnitude and voltage. Area classiication (Class I, Division 1 or 2) also affects
what is done to limit leakage current effects. Consult the literature or
ask the manufacturer for accurate information.
New or upgraded installations
For supervisory current in new or upgraded installations, select the
right I/O module. For a control-system upgrade, the right output module helps ensure trouble-free, low-maintenance operation.
If supervisory current is needed as part of a diagnostic scheme to
detect open circuit conditions:
Consult the maker for drop-out current of the low-power solenoid
valve used.

Flowmeters
In a well-site extraction, for a typical pad of
six wells, each pad has a lare-stack pipe two
inches to six inches in diameter. In the gasextraction process, gas laring at the stack must
be monitored and recorded. Federal, state and
local agencies require the daily low of vented
gas at the lare inlet be totaled so as to better
understand and control the release of volatile
organic compounds (VOCs).
As already mentioned, the best lare-gas lowmeter choice measures an unrestricted low traveling from one foot to 100 feet per second and
accommodates changes in gas composition.
Flare line lows
The lare line gas can be of varying composition with hydrocarbons from C2 through C6.
Composition can change based upon what
happens at the extraction point. The gas low
is low under stable, normal conditions. Upset
conditions can cause low velocities to increase
up to as much as 300 feet per second. This
wide rangeability of low, including pressure
drops and varying gas compositions, can be a
showstopper for most low technologies.

Twin Attritors
Union Process, Inc., a manufacturer of particle size reduction and dispersing equipment as well as related services, has built two twin S-400
Attritors. The wet grinding batch attritors were built for a customer
grinding alumina. The customer's throughput requirements dictated
the need for these two large production mills. The starting size of the
customer's material was around 300 microns. Union Process was able
to reduce the size of the starting material to as small as one to two
microns in a very short time (especially when compared to a ball mill).
The tanks are constructed of 304 stainless steel, ceramic-lined and are
jacketed for cooling. The shafts are stainless steel and the arms are
and dried legumes. They feature robust designs and can be all stainless

Kason has introduced an ultra-low-proile 40 in. (1016 mm) diameter FloThru Vibroscreen sifter with lat dust cover that its tight spots between
storage and process equipment. The sifter employs two imbalancedweight gyratory motors mounted on opposing exterior sidewalls of the
unit, instead of one motor positioned beneath the screening chamber,
reducing overall height signiicantly. The design also allows vertical
alignment of the top inlet and bottom outlet, causing on-size material
to descend through the screen in a straight-through path at high rates.
Oversize material is ejected through a spout at the periphery of the
screen. The unit is intended for installation above or below storage vessels, bulk bag and drum unloaders, bag dump stations, blenders/mixers

Communication and Connectivity Modules
Red Lion Controls has expanded its Graphite series of Human Machine
Interface (HMI) operator panels with two new plug-in communication
modules. Designed for use with Graphite HMIs, which already support
more than 300 major industrial protocols, the CAN and J1939 modules
provide the communication and connectivity customers need to add powerful HMI functionality to their systems. Red Lions new communication
and connectivity modules allow customers to leverage the Graphite host
to integrate CAN and J1939 protocols into a single solution. Originally
developed for in-vehicle networking of passenger cars, the CAN and
Single-loop Controllers
Yokogawa Electric Corp.'s new YS1000 series singleloop controllers feature a new TFT LCD with improved
display characteristics and a design that facilitates
easy maintenance. Single-loop controllers receive
temperature, low rate, pressure, and other types of
measurement readings from sensors and send corresponding instructions to control elements such
as valves in order to maintain these values within a
desired range. Each control loop has its own controller.
Single-loop controllers are widely used to control small
plant facilities and serve as back-ups to distributed control
systems. Formerly, this product used a STN LCD screen. This has
been changed to a TFT LCD screen that has a 1.5 times wider
viewing angle. The display contrast and brightness are also notably improved, making the screen much easier to read. In addition, the TFT LCD has a longer lifespan and does not need to
be replaced as frequently. As controllers typically are used over
long periods of time, periodic replacement of the LCD screen is
required. With the enhanced YS1000 controllers, the TFT LCD
can be replaced while the controller is online, without interrupting the output of signals to control elements.

Industry Briefs
Praxair unveils plans for nitrogen facility
Industrial gases company Praxair, Inc. has announced plans to expand
its New Mexico facility, including construction of a new nitrogen plant.
The gas provider says demand for nitrogen is up and it is the main reason for the planned expansion.
The facility in Kirtland, New Mexico, is expected to increase production capacity over the next few months.
In fact, the expansion largely responds to increasing oil and gas production in the San Juan Basin, encompassing parts of Colorado, northwestern New Mexico and some areas in Arizona and Utah. The energy
industry in the area is developing new resources, pushing up demand
for gases, Praxair said.
The company produces and distributes atmospheric, process and
specialty gases. According to Gerald Miller, vice president of the West
Region for Praxair's U.S. industrial gases business, ramping up nitrogen
production allows gas providers to meet growing customer demand for
pipeline and liquid nitrogen. Support from local and state government
contributed to project realization.
Earlier this year Praxair started work on a new non-cryogenic vacuumpressure-swing-adsorption plant in Uruguay. It also recently closed an
acquisition deal with Messer Italia, in which Praxair took over the Italian
company's liquid carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, argon and packaged gases businesses, Chemicals Technology reported.
Chemical plant possible threat to Tennessee river
U.S. Nitrogen, a subsidiary of Ohio-based Austin Powder Co., plans
to use water from Tennessee's Nolichucky River in its chemical plant to
produce ammonium nitrate, the Associated Press reported.
The news raised concerns among local communities and environmental groups that claim using water from the river for industrial purposes
would lead to its contamination. If U.S. Nitrogen took water from the
Nolichucky River, it would treat and release it back to the water body.
Even though the water would have passed through the facility's wastewater treatment plant, the water discharge permit obtained by the company would allow it to discharge limited amounts of ammonia into the
river. According to media reports, such a permit has already been granted by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
U.S. Nitrogen says that treated water discharged into the river wont
pose any risk to the environment, the Associated Press reported. But
environmentalists seem unconvinced. Brian Paddock, Sierra Club attorney, explained that his main concern was the amount of ammonia to be
discharged into the river, as well as the potential impact of long-term
pollution. Other potential causes of concern include the cumulative
effect of the discharge downstream on communities that are already
dealing with nitrogen pollution from fertilizers and the volume of water
in the river and at the discharge point.
US food & beverage producers expect growth in 2014
The U.S. food and beverage industry is upbeat about its performance
in 2014, with most industry decision makers expecting growth in both
sales and proit, according to a just-released report by advisory services
irm WeiserMazars LLP. The good news on the employment front is that
many industry representatives anticipate a recruitment surge over the
course of this year.
Predicted growth follows years of strong performance for the food
and beverage industry. Between 2010 and 2013 average sales rose by
13 percent, while average net proits went up 17 percent. Between
2012 and 2013 labor costs and commodity prices increased by 4 percent each, while fuel and energy costs were 9 percent higher on average, the report found. Despite this increase in costs, the majority of
respondents expect growth in 2014 due to an anticipated surge in sales.
When asked what would inluence sales this year, 39 percent of
respondents said the most powerful factor would be new customers,
followed by improved sales performance, cited by 21 percent, and
launching new products.
The biggest gains in sales are anticipated in the area of healthy
nutritious foods, with about one in three industry representatives
predicting growth.

ed and only 28 percent of those polled conirmed that cyber security
was among the top ive priorities for their companies.
Larry Ponemon, head of the institute, commented that there was a
gap between the people responsible for security and the top management of organizations. This is especially problematic for organizations
operating in the power and energy sectors because research shows
that cyber attacks on them are inevitable and it is only a matter of time
before each of them becomes a target.
Lawmakers pass chemical facility security bill
The U.S. House of Representatives on July 8 passed a bill to authorize
the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to establish standards protecting chemical facilities from terrorism.
The Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) Authorization
and Accountability Act of 2014 establishes risk-based performance standards for the security of chemical facilities. It requires covered chemical
facilities to prepare Security Vulnerability Assessments, which identify
facility security vulnerabilities, and to develop and implement Site
Security Plans, which include measures that satisfy the identiied riskbased performance standards.
It also allows certain covered chemical facilities, in speciied circumstances, to submit Alternate Security Programs in lieu of a Security
Vulnerability Assessment, Site Security Plan or both, according to DHS.
House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul
(R-Texas) said the measure would help prevent events like the April 2013
ammonium nitrate explosion at a West, Texas, fertilizer facility.
The American Chemistry Council (ACC) issued the following statement: "ACC commends Congress for coming together to pass this
important legislation, which is critical to providing a strong foundation for CFATS. The legislation will give the Department of Homeland
Security (DHS) and industry the long overdue certainty that is necessary
for a strong and effective chemical security program."
Joint venture completes pipeline from Oklahoma to Gulf Coast
Houston, Texas-based Enterprise Products Partners and Canadian
Enbridge Inc. have completed the construction of a 512-mile section of
the Seaway Pipeline system, running from Cushing, Oklahoma, to the
Jones Creek terminal near Freeport, Texas.
However, oil will not low through the newly built loop until testing
and commissioning work have been completed as well, the two companies said in a joint statement. Additional procedures are expected
to wrap up in the third quarter of 2014, when the pipeline will oficially
go online. Once the loop is running at full capacity it will carry about
850,000 barrels of oil per day, which is more than double the current
capacity of the Seaway System. Experts believe that the launch of the
new pipeline will signiicantly relieve the glut of oil in Cushing.
In addition to the pipeline, the Seaway System includes a terminal
facility and a distribution network based in Texas City, which delivers
crude to the Houston area and serves local reineries. The pipeline is
owned by Seaway Crude Pipeline Company LLC a 50/50 joint venture
formed by Enbridge and Enterprise Products Partners.
President Obama signs water resources bill into law
The federal Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA)
has oficially become law, after President Obama signed the bipartisan
document on June 10. The legislation aims to make the U.S. inland
waterways system more reliable and more effective.
The law places emphasis on reforms regarding the funding for locks
projects. In the United States, a large proportion of existing locks have
been beyond their design life for decades, making transportation by
waterways highly ineficient. Passing of the bill has been welcomed by
agricultural groups, as it is predicted to improve waterways transportation and facilitate shipments of the country's grain exports.
According to the Congressional Budget Ofice, implementing the legislation will cost about $12.3 billion over the next 10 years. The WRRDA
is expected to prioritize authorized improvements of waterways, based
on assessment of risk of failure and economic return. The law will kickstart port upgrades in cities like Los Angeles, New Orleans and Boston
and will facilitate ecosystem enhancement projects in sensitive areas
such as the Chesapeake Bay and Florida Everglades. At the same time,
it will de-authorize about $18 billion in old and inactive projects, according to media reports.
The legislation includes the new Water Infrastructure Finance and
Innovation Act (WIFIA). Supported by the American Water Works
Association, the Water Environment Federation and other water organizations, WIFIA is a inance tool to help communities address essential
water and wastewater infrastructure projects at a lower cost.
Missouri iles lawsuit against
Tyson Foods over water contamination
Missouri's Attorney General
Chris Koster has iled a lawsuit
against Tyson Foods, accusing the
company of illegally discharging
untreated industrial wastewater
into Clear Creek in the southwestern part of the state.
According to legal documents,
the incident led to the death of
up to 100,000 ish. The lawsuit
includes six counts for pollution
of state waters and violations of
the state's hazardous waste laws.
The Attorney General is seeking inancial penalties for Tyson
Foods and compensation for the
damage caused to the creek.
In addition, the lawsuit asks the
company to reimburse state costs
for investigating the incident.
The discharge occurred on
May 16, when Tyson Foods' facility at Monett released highly
acidic wastewater into the city's
sewer system. Due to the unusually high acid concentration in the
untreated water, the city's biological wastewater treatment system
failed, resulting in wastewater
contaminated with high levels
of ammonia lowing into Clear
Creek, the Attorney General
Ofice said.
Tyson Foods caused damage to
Clear Creek and threatened its
usability as a resource for communities in Southwest Missouri.
The company will be held
accountable and ensure a similar
incident doesnt happen again,
Koster commented.
Meanwhile, Tyson Foods'
spokesman Worth Sparkman said
that the company was very sorry
for the incident and was taking
corrective action.

ROI
Return on investment:
performance measure used to evaluate the
efficiency of an investment; the costs of an
investment, both initial and ongoing, are an
essential piece of information for any investor.
Capital equipment purchases are analyzed, criticized and scrutinized.
Not only is what you spend today important, but what about next year,
and the year after that? ROI is a lot more than the initial purchase
price - long after the thrill of the bargain is gone, you must live with
the value of the purchase.
How much does your Belt, Screw or Drag conveyor really cost
Probably a lot more than you think. How many times do you replace
that belt? How much maintenance and downtime does it present?
The Slipstick Horizontal Motion Conveyor from Triple/S Dynamics
provides years of worry-free, reliable service. One large waste-toenergy customer has been using Slipstick conveyors in their plants
since 1989. This year they are replacing the 1989 units with new
Slipsticks. Twenty-four years of service. Real ROI is capital equipment
that pays you back over the life of your process. Triple/S Dynamics
equipment protects your brand and your budget.
