1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Food was always known as Gods gift but since the past two centuries, food wastage has been an
ever-growing threat, which started with teenagers throwing half-eaten apples on a sidewalk.
Because of the effects of wasting food, many people are starving.
Many of us don't give a thought to the quantity of food we waste daily,
weekly monthly and yearly. We may think about it for a moment when we're
scraping the leftovers off the plate, or when we dump some vrot fruit in the
bin. But it's become so "normal" to throw food away that we just don't give it
any real thought, and we don't think how the quantities add up over the year.
(We absolutely acknowledge that there are feeding schemes where not a
drop of food is wasted!).
Half of the food thrown away needn't go to waste. With some basic
management in the food buying process and the food preparation you could
have saved a substantial amount of money! Read on and we'll explain
further. As you know only too well food is so expensive that food thrown
away is like throwing money in the dustbin. And we would never choose to
actually throw money in the bin!
This phenomenon happened at Parit Raja because Parit Raja is the small places but it has
a big communities stay there. Furthermore, Parit Raja is a place that full of factories, education
places so the people will buy and eat everywhere at the stall and restaurant at Parit Raja. Thats
why this phenomenon happened at Parit Raja. There are many factors that caused to food
wastage, for example, attitude of people, the portion of the food is too big and also the taste of

food itself. If the people and communities in Parit Raja have high awareness about food wastage
so this phenomenon might be avoided and the quantity of food wastage can be reduced.

1.5 DEFINITION OF TERMS

The definition of waste is a contentious subject, often defined on a situational basis this also
applies to food waste. Professional bodies, including international organizations, state

governments and secretariats may use their own definitions. Definitions of food waste vary,
among other things, in what food waste consists of, how it is produced and where or what it is
discarded from or generated by. Definitions also vary because certain groups do not consider (or
have traditionally not considered) food waste to be a waste material, due to its applications.
Some definitions of what food waste consists of are based on other waste definitions (e.g.
agricultural waste) and which materials do not meet their definitions.

1.7 LIMITATION OF STUDY

In this first exploratory phase on the issue of these studies, we concentrate mainly on the
collection of data from the questionnaire from the 40 respondents from communities and
students to the issues of the food wastage among of the communities and students. Our research
is comparative. We selected data from around Parit Raja and students in the university. As a
result this research is explorative in gathering information. The scope of respondents is too
limited to provide an exhaustive representation of UTHM and Parit Raja. Further in depth
research is clearly needed to put the information in a comparative perspective.
