Old Dorothy

Do you suppose there is such a place? A place where

there isnt any trouble... A magical place, where
dreams really do come true. There must be, Ive been
there! Its not a place you can get to by a boat or a
train. Its far, far away... Beyond the moon, behind the
rain...

OPTIMISTIC VOICES IS PLAYED WHILE SHE SPEAKS.

(SPOKEN) Somewhere, over the rainbow, way up high,
Theres a land that I heard of, once, in a lullaby!
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare the dream,
Really do come true...

Dorothy

Who me? Why I am not a witch at all. Im Dorothy

Gale from Kansas.

Glinda

Well, Im a little muddled. You see the munchkins

called me because a new witch has just dropped a
house on the Wicked Witch of the East. And so what
the munchkins want to know is. Are you a good witch
or a bad witch?

Dorothy

I have told you, I am not a witch! Witches are old and

ugly . (a munchkin laughs) What was that?

Glinda

The munchkins. They are laughing because I am a

Witch. Im Glinda, the Good Witch of the North.

Dorothy

You are? I have never heard of a good witch before.

What exactly are munchkins?

Glinda

They are the little people who live in this land. This is
Munchkin Land, and you are their hero my dear. Its
alright you may all come out now and thank the young
lady who fell from the star.
She fell from the sky, she fell very far
And Kansas she says is the name of the star.

Munchkins

Kansas she says is the name of the star.

Glinda

She brings you good news, oh havent you heard?

When she fell out of Kansas, a miracle occurred.

Dorothy

It really was no miracle what happened was just this:

The wind began to switch - the house to pitch,

And suddenly the hinges started to unhitch.
Just then, the witch to satisfy an itch,
Went flying on her broomstick thumbing for a hitch.
Munchkin 1

And oh, what happened then was rich.

Munchkin 2

We thank you very sweetly, for doing it so neatly

Munchkin 3

Youve killed her so completely, that we thank you very

sweetly.

Glinda

how to use them.

Glinda

Dont Dorothy. They are very powerful or she wouldnt

want them back.

Witch

You stay out of this Glinda or Ill fix you as well.

Glinda

Oh rubbish! You have no power here. Be gone, before

Witch

Very well Ill bide my time. But Ill get you eventually
my pretty and your little dog too!

Glinda

Its alright you can all come out know shes gone.

THE MUNCHKINS ALL APPEAR.

Glinda

I am afraid that you have made a very bad enemy. You

must get out of Oz as quickly as you can.

Dorothy

Id give anything to get out of Oz, but which way is

back to Kansas?

Glinda

The only person who can help you know is the great
and wonderful Wizard of Oz. He lives in the Emerald

Scene 3
Dorothy

Now which way do I go?

Scarecrow

That was is a very nice way (he points his arm right)

Dorothy

Who said that? Scarecrows cant (he points left) talk!

Scarecrow

Its pleasant down that way too.

Dorothy

Wasnt he pointing the other way?

Scarecrow

Of course people do go ..(he points in both

directions) both ways.

Dorothy

Are you doing that on purpose of cant you make up

your mind?

SCARECROW SHAKES HIS HEADS THEN NODS, THEN SHAKES.

Scarecrow

Thats the trouble. I cant make up my mind. I havent

got a brain only straw.

Dorothy

How can you talk if you havent got a brain?

Scarecrow

I dont know. But some people without brains do an

awful lot of talking.

Dorothy

Yes, I guess your right. Are you comfortable?

Scarecrow

Not at all. I cannot get down on my own. Can you

unhook me?

Dorothy

There you go. (he stands and then falls down)

Scarecrow

Did I scare you? (she helps him up but he falls back

down).

Dorothy

No I thought you hurt yourself.

Scarecrow

Oh I wouldnt know that as I dont have a brain.

Dorothy

What would you do if you had a brain?

Scarecrow

I could while away the hours

Conferring with the flowers,
Consulting with the rain.
And my head Id be scratchin
While my thoughts were busy hatchin
If I only had a brain.
Oh he could tell you why
The oceans near the shore
He could think of things he never thunk before
And then hed sit and think some more.
He would not be just a nothing
His head all full of stuffin
His heart all full of pain.
He would dance and be merry
Life would be a ding-a-derry
If he only had a brain.

Dorothy

Well why dont you come and see if the Wizard of Oz

will give you a brain. I am asking him if he will send me
back home.

Scarecrow

Really?

Dorothy

But maybe you shouldnt. I have a Witch after me and

you might get into trouble.

Scarecrow

Witch, huh? Im not afraid of anything except a

lighted match.

Dorothy
Come on then.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Scene 4

Scarecrow

Tinman

Oy Ca.Oy Ca.

Dorothy

Tinman

Oy Ca.Oy Ca.

Dorothy

Tinman

then it started to rain. And right in the middle of a
chop, I, Irusted solid. And Ive been that way since.

Scarecrow

Well youre perfect now.

Tinman

SCARECROW BANGS HIS CHEST AND HOLLOW SOUND EFFECT

Tinman

Its empty. The tinsmith forgot to give me a heart.

Dor & Scrow

No heart?

Tinman
(sings)

Its true.
When a mans an empty kettle
He should be on his mettle
And yet Im torn apart.
Just because Im presumin
That I could be kinda humn,
If I only had a heart.
Hed be tender hed be gentl
And awful sentimental
Regarding Love and Art
Hed be friends with the sparrows
And the boys that shoot the arrows
If he only had a heart.

Dorothy

Well why dont you come to the Emerald City and as

the wizard for a heart?

Scarecrow

I am asking him for a oh I forgot!

Dorothy

A brain.. and Im asking him to send me back to

Kansas.

Tinman

Ok, its a deal! We can all stick together.

Witch

Oh forgot about me did you? Helping the little lady

mattress with you. And you -- I will use you as a bee
hive. My flying pets will keep a look out along the way
and make sure that you dont get there my dear let

THE MONKEYS RUN AROUND THEM AND LEAVE WITH THE WITCH

Scarecrow

I am not afraid of her. Ill make sure that you get to

Dorothy

I dont like this forest. Its dark and creepy.

Scarecrow

darker before it gets lighter.

Dorothy

Do you think that we will meet any wild animals?

Tinman

We might.

Scarecrow

Lion

fight you both together if you want. Ill fight you with
one paw tied behind my back. Ill fight you standing on
one foot. Ill fight you with my eyes closed.

Tinman

Go away and leave us alone!

Lion

Scared are you? Come on and fight you empty tin can.
You too you stack of straw.

DOROTHY GOES TOWARDS THE LION AND HITS HIM ON THE

NOSE
Dorothy

Shame on you, you bully!

Lion

What What did you do that for? I didnt bite him!

Dorothy

No, but you tried to.

Lion

Is my nose bleeding?

Scarecrow
Lion

Of course not! What a fuss your making. Why your

nothing but a coward.
Youre right. I am a coward. I havent any courage at
all. I even scare myself. Look at the circles under my
eyes. I havent slept in weeks.

Tinman

Why dont you try counting sheep.

Lion

That doesnt do any good I am too scared of them.

Scarecrow

Do you think that the Wizard could help him?

Dorothy

I dont see why not. Why dont you come and visit the
Wizard with us? We are on our way to get him a
heart.

Tinman

And him a brain.

Dorothy

I am sure that he could give you some courage.

Lion

Gee, thats awfully nice of you. My life has been

unbearable.

(sings)

Life is sad believe me missy,

When your born to be a Sissy
Without the vim or verve.
But I could show my prowess
Be a lion not a mou-ess
If I only had the nerve.

ALL

Im afraid theres no denying

Hes just a dandy-lion
A fate he dont deserve.
Hed be brave as a blizzard
Hed be gentle as a lizard
Hed be clever as a gizzard
If the wizard is a wizard who will serve.

Scarecrow
Tinman
Scarecrow

SCARECROW SNEAK ON STAGE
Tinman

Hello Dorothy, dont scream. We have come to save

you.

Dorothy

Oh am I glad to see you three. I knew you would come

and save me. But we must hurry she ill be back any
minute.

Witch

How right you are! So we have visitors eh? Unwanted

visitors! I shall have to deal with you first, the
slippers can wait. How about a little fire scarecrow?

THE WITCH WAVES HER ARMS IN THE AIR AS THOUGH TO

CONJOUR UP A FIRE BALL.
Scarecrow

No not fire. My straw would only last a few seconds.

Dorothy

Oh no you dont!

DOROTHY GRABS A BUCKET AND THROWS IT AT THE WITCH.

SILVER PAPER IS IN THE BUCKET.
Witch

Ooh you cursed brat. Look at what you have done. I

am melting! Melting! Who would have thought that a
good little girl like you could destroy my beautiful
wickedness!!!!!!

Tinman

I think you killed her!

Dorothy

I didnt mean too. She was going to hurt my friend.

Lion

Quick the broom. Grab it and lets go see the wizard!

ALL
(sings)

Ding Dong the witch is dead.

Which old witch? The Wicked Witch!
Ding Dong the Wicked Witch is dead.

Scene 10

THEY ARE BACK IN THE WIZARDS ROOM.

OZ

Can I believe my eyes? Why have you come back?

Dorothy

Please Sir, we have done what you have told us. We

have brought back the witches broomstick. We
melted her.

OZ

Not so fast! Not so fast! I must give the matter a

little thought. Come back a week on Tuesday!

Dorothy

But I want to go back home now!

Tinman

You have had enough time already.

Lion

Yeah!

OZ

Do not annoy the Great Oz come back

TOMORROW!

Dorothy

If you were great and powerful youd keep your

promises.

THE PARTITION AT THE BACK FALLS DOWN AND REVEALS A SMALL

MAN.
OZ

Twenty years from now (he turns around) O-OH.

Dorothy

Who are you?

OZ

I am the Great and powerful Wizard of Oz!

Dorothy

You? But we didnt think that. You promised us

that you would grant us our wishes. You said you would
give the Tinman his heart.

Scarecrow

And me a brain and him courage and

Lion

But most of all to send our friend Dorothy home to

Kansas.

OZ

Why anyone can have a brain. People go to school and

learn and when they go home they can still talk like
you. The only thing you need is a diploma to say you
have one.

Dorothy

Oh Scarecrow, how wonderful.

OZ

And where I was born there are men who do good

things all day. And their hearts are no bigger than
yours. Remember, to love friends you need a heart
and your friendship with these people is bigger than
any heart. Here is a clock in the shape of a heart for
you to remember that you will always have time for
your friends.

Lion

Tick tock the tinman has a clock! Hey that rhymes!

OZ

And the Lion. Many people admire heroes, but they

have no more courage than you have. The only thing
you havent got is a medal. So for your bravery I give
you this medal to show how brave you are.

Dorothy

Oh Mr Wizard! Thank you, you have been so kind.

OZ

And finally I come to you. I was born in Kansas too.

So I know how much you miss your home. I shall of
course take you back myself, as I wish to see Kansas
once more. I have a hot air balloon to take us but I
think there is one more person who may have a quicker
way.

GLINDA THE GOOD WITCH ENTERS

Glinda

That is right Oz. Those ruby slippers on your feet

Dorothy will take you back home without any mode of
transport.

Dorothy

Really? I dont understand!

Glinda

Well I did say that the only reason the Wicked Witch
of the West wanted them was because of their
powers. They have magical powers if you click your
heels 3 times and say the words There is no place like
home

Dorothy

Really? Tinman, Lion, Scarecrow I will never forget

you. You have really shown me how wonderful a friend
can be. I will really miss you all.

All

Us too Dorothy.

Dorothy

Ok here goes.Theres no place like home, Theres

no place like home, Theres no place like home.
