PPH 308 BENEFITS

Increased paint savings, 80% + transfer efficiency

Adjustable spray paint pattern

A quick ROI of the equipment

Consistent high quality of spray paint application

A high level of productivity (paint flow up to 600cc/min)

An optimal use of bi-component products

The bell application has evolved. In the past, the bell was
used (primarily) to paint flat parts:
- The air shroud technology with VORTEX effect provides
results as good as a pneumatic-electrostatic sprayer, but
the transfer efficiency is higher

The design of PPH 308 was optimized in order to reduce

the maintenance requirements and to facilitate the
disassembly of various components.

A very good paint penetrating effect on difficult parts

A maximum coverage of parts to be painted (the
electrostatic wrap around effect permits a transfer
of paint behind the part).

Magnetic air bearing turbine (TPAM) allows rotation

without mechanical friction, the bell is turning on an
air cushion, which prevents the wear of moving parts:
- low maintenance costs
- long life

Controls Description:
The following lists the control lines to the bell with a brief
description of how they operate.
Shaping Air: 6x8mm [5/16] O.D.T. closed loop control.
Regulated air = max. 87psi. Maximum air consumption
21.2 CFM
Compensation Air: 6x8mm [5/16] O.D.T. Regulated air, set at
18psi to start (varies)
Bearing Air OK: 4mm [5/32] O.D.T. pressure switch to verify
bearing is on
Bearing air Supply: 4x6mm O.D.T. Regulated air set at 75
psi (4.4 CFM). Note the bearing air should incorporate a 2 liter
reserve air tank after any isolating valve and have a check valve
on the INLET side to the tank. During operation, the bearing air
pressure must be maintained continuously to avoid considerable damage. A sudden cut in the air supply could destroy the
air bearing of the turbine. The procedure for cutting off air to the
air bearing should be: Switch off the turbine rotation air supply,
wait until the turbine has stopped completely (at least 150 sec.),
then switch off the bearing air supply. Running the turbine with
bearing air pressure of less than 6 bar (87 psi) continuously at
the atomizer inlet can damage the bearing. The standard air
pressure at the air control cabinet is 6 bar (87psi). The 2 liter
reserve air tank is recommended to allow the turbine to slow
down, independent of a sudden cut-off of main air supply. It is
recommended that the air supply to the brake also be made
available to the brake, in the event of a sudden loss of main air
supply, to facilitate a safe shut-down of the turbine.
Brake Air: 6x8mm [5/16] O.D.T. Regulated air, set at 20psi to
start (varies)
Turbine Air: 7x10mm O.D.T. Closed-loop control, maximum
87psi, consumption = 9.8 CFM max.
Microphone Air Supply: 4x6mm O.D.T. Regulated air, set
at 28 to 43 psi maximum
Microphone Return Air: 4x6mm O.D.T. to microphone. This
terminates at the microphone junction box which should be
located within 5 to 15 ft. of the applicator for optimal speed
control.

GUIDELINES FOR APPLICATION SETTINGS
This section describes the setting up of a rotating bell painting application. The following advice is not exhaustive:
it is often necessary to perform laboratory tests to determine the precise parameters corresponding to the
process line.
To define application settings, you must first
Define the areas that are to be painted automatically
Identify the need (or not) for manual touch-up
Define the layers of paint to be deposited and the minimum and maximum tolerances
Know the speed of the conveyor
Obtain at least 4 of the following characteristics:
(Of the product painting criteria)
> Solids
> Viscosity
> Resistivity
> Sag Limit
(Check periodically the viscosity of the product because it can cause changes on the outcome of application)
Obtain the vertical velocity of air in the spray booth. This value usually ranges between 0.3 and 0.5 m / s.

Clamp for mounting to 2 diameter bar included

PN: 1204441

PPH 308 SB Atomizer - Integrator Package

GUIDELINES FOR APPLICATION SETTINGS
The main parameters to adjust the application are:

AA: THE SHAPING AIR SHROUD

The air shroud adjusts the size of the fan pattern. A higher volume of
shaping air, results in a narrow and penetrating bell pattern. Conversely, a
very low air volume gives a broad fan pattern.
The desired fan pattern will depend on the surface to be painted; it must
allow a homogeneous collection on it and minimize overspray in the booth.
Too much air = fog (*)
Too little air = hollow center of bell pattern(*)
For the purposes of flat piece = lower air volume
For the application of complex component (entry) = increase air volume

The outer shroud

incorporates
Vortex air outlet
holes inclined
to the passage of air. This shroud is
recommended in most configurations.
Thanks to the versatility of the settings,
it encourages the transfer efficiency
and the electrostatic wraparound effect.

(*): Phenomenon sensitive to high volume of paint

BB: THE PAINT FLOW

The paint flow is the parameter that yields the coating thickness.
Where no test would have been done in the laboratory, and you do
not have precise data: you can then use the following theoretical formula
as a starting point.
Paint Sprayer Flow
D = (100 x H x Vc x Ed)
(R x ES)

The outer shroud

incorporates
Straight air outlet
holes for the
passage of air.
This shroud is
recommended when looking for a
better distribution onto the work part,
particularly with a large flow
(> 500 cc / min).

The flow will depend on several factors:

H: Height scanning robot in cm (fixed
parameter, this corresponds to the height
of the part to which is added about half the
width of impact. These are the high points
and low points of the conversion part)
Vc: Line speed in m / min (fixed parameter)
Ed: Thickness to deposit, in microns (fixed
parameter, microns)
R: Transfer efficiency %(**)
Es: Dry product to be applied (provided by
the paint manufacturer)
(**): The return of a PPH 308 in an optimal
configuration is 90%.
A) Shaping Air
B) Paint flow
C) Application distance
D) Rotating speed of the bell
E) The value of high voltage

10

PPH 308 SB Atomizer - Integrator Package

GUIDELINES FOR APPLICATION SETTINGS
CC: DISTANCE OF SPRAYING

The spraying distance is an important parameter that affects the evaporation of solvents in the process of spraying
and therefore the tension of the film.
Quick evaporation tends to reduce this tension. Product formulation, including the balance of light and heavy solvents
must be adjusted to achieve an optimum.
Heavy solvents help keep a paint film wet longer, but it may increase the risk of running.
Too much light solvent can cause a dry powdery application.
It is therefore possible to adjust the spray distance to influence the evaporation of solvents. However it is advisable to
adjust the dilution of products for application in rotating bells.

The recommended applicator to target distance is 250 mm.

The minimum acceptable distance is 150 mm at 70kV and a maximum of 350 mm:
Distances below 150 mm, will result in problems related to paint impact, and recovery of defects.
Caution is vital with respect to the spray distance allowed based on the voltage.
These distances are shown in the equipment manuals.
Above 350 mm, we begin to experience problems in dirt (over spray) and decreased deposition efficiency.

DD: ROTATION SPEED OF THE BELL

The speed of rotation will help determine the size of paint particles.
The higher the speed, the particles are fine and vice versa.
The speed required is very dependent on the product formulation.
The speed used as the starting value =
30 to 35 000 rpm for solvents
35 to 40 000 rpm for water-based materials
These values correspond to average flows (300 cc / min). Smaller flow rates or lower viscosities will require a
decrease in the speed and sometimes it will fall to values below 30,000 rpm.

The key effects due to:

Turning too fast
> Spraying too dry
> Matte finish, decrease the brightness
> Low deposition efficiency

A rotation too slow
> Less good homogeneity in particle size
> Worse controlling the bell pattern of the shroud
> Appearance of orange peel
> Worse tension, sags

GUIDELINES FOR APPLICATION SETTINGS

EE: VALUE OF THE HIGH VOLTAGE
The high voltage increases the transfer efficiency. The charged paint particles are attracted by the part connected to ground.
The value of the high voltage will depend on the resistivity of the material being applied.
The higher the resistivity, the lower the value of the high voltage.
Typical values are:
For products containing solvents (resistivity of 1 to 500 M.cm):
> Internal charge = 80 kV
> To the metallic base, a circuit Coil is built into the sprayer PPH 308 and allows the use of high voltage to 80 kV.
Requirement for penetration into the part = decrease of the high voltage
An application for a single part (flat) = increase in high voltage
