1. Start with background information by locating an encyclopedia entry that discusses
adolescent health and weight. What is the definition of obesity? Identify two conditions
for which obese adolescents are at risk.
: Obesity is, A condition that is characterized by excessive accumulation and storage of
fat in the body and that in an adult is typically indicated by a body mass index of 30 or
greater, (Trent 559). Obesity in adolescents has shown risk in associated conditions
such as essential hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM-2) in
adolescents, (Trent 559).
2. Now find some statistics on overweight adults in North Carolina. How do adults in NC
compare to their peers across the country?
: Adults in North Carolina show a prevalence of obesity of 25%-30%, which is around
the median average for the entire country making North Carolina middle of the pack in
Obesity prevalence (Obesity Prevalence Maps).
3. Locate one program that works to fight obesity in North Carolina schools. Explain why
you think the sources you found are high quality.

: One program that works to fight obesity in North Carolina schools is the Coordinated
School Health Program. CSHP integrates efforts of the eight components of the
School community that can strongly influence student health: (1)health education; (2)
physical education; (3) health services; (4) nutrition services; (5) counseling,
psychological, and social services; (6) healthy school environment; (7) health
Promotion for staff; and (8) family and community involvement, (Childhood Obesity).
This source is high quality because its run by National Association of State Board of
Education which tries tirelessly to end childhood obesity in schools.
4. Does the American Academy of Pediatrics have a position statement on obesity in
children? Please provide a partial quote that gives the basic information.
: Weve created a perfect storm for childhood obesity media, advertising, and
inactivity, said the statements lead author, Victor Strasburger, MD, FAAP, a member of
the AAP Council on Communications and Media. American society couldnt do a worse
job at the moment of keeping children fit and healthy too much TV, too many food ads,
not enough exercise, and not enough sleep (American Academy of Pediatrics).

sensationalized? Does the article reflect the current scientific viewpoint as reflected in the
information you found above?
: Its a very balanced article that does reflect the current scientific viewpoint of obesity
(Overweight and Obesity in the U.S. Food Research & Action Center).
7. Provide some overall impressions of the search process. Which sources were easiest to
use? Which sources provided the most solid information?
: I hate using data bases to find sources, but I did find that credo references was the easiest one
for me to use in the future.
