Vacant Desks In Library Frustrate Students

Several students choosing to revise for exams or complete coursework in the library have voiced their concerns about the number of idle desks
and computers. Many students choose to occupy seating areas, including computer stations, only to neglect their desk for long periods of
time, sometimes several hours. This has left floors practically half occupied in one of the busiest times of the academic year, as many students
hunt endlessly for vacant desks.

Some students insist on leaving their belongings on a desk despite leaving the library for several hours. This has left many students jockeying
for positions on group desks and it’s only a mystery as to how violence or an exchange of words hasn’t broken out.

Final year Business Management student Eamonn Armstrong said, “I’ve often turned up to the library to prepare for really important exams,
only to find countless desks occupied by books, but with no presence of human life. Next time I’m going to leave one piece of paper and a
pen the night before, and turn up the next day in the afternoon. This problem is getting a little out of hand.”

This problem is very similar to the hotel sun bed saga, which plagues resorts across the globe. Some tourists deliberately wake up at
unthinkable hours in the morning to occupy the ‘best spots’ by the pool, only to return after lunch. Other rational holiday goers are left in the
shade among an outbreak of ‘empty’ sun beds.

If you’re planning on leaving the library for a considerable amount of time, it should occur to you that another student might need to occupy
your desk or computer. Please consider this before the library turns into a game of musical chairs.

Snow Grounds University To A Halt

Academic and work life at the University of Surrey was disrupted last month due to a substantial amount of snowfall on campus. Pavements and
pathways were impassable after heavy snow fell across Surrey and areas of the United Kingdom on Tuesday 5th January. Enter our It snow joking
matter photo contest and have your photograph shown in the next edition of The Stag. The best three photos will be shown with accreditation.
Details below.

The conditions had a severe effect on academic activities, which were cancelled or postponed to prevent students travelling on or around the
area. Most coursework deadlines were extended, as the email accounts of students were flooded with University announcements. Measures by
local councils to anticipate severe weather conditions and the general public’s reaction to the weather has been the topic of debate ever since
the first few hours of snowfall. Did local councils react fast enough and were there sufficient resources in place to manage the conditions? Also,
did the general public overreact to what is an unsurprising effect of winter weather?

In the days after the initial snowfall, the University Estates and Facilities Management began clearing snow from vital pathways and pavements
on campus to prevent the build up of ice. Furthermore, brave staff responsible for administration tasks and general management turned up to
work and kept the basic essential functions of the University running.

What did you think of the University’s reaction to the conditions? Also, take a look at photographs of
the snow on campus in the Society section of this newspaper.

Photographers of all shapes and sizes are welcome. The best three photographs by separate individuals
will be shown in the next edition of The Stag. Good luck!

The Importance of Procrastination
by Stephanie Davies

We’ve all been there: the deadline for the essay is fast approaching, and our
word count is lower than the predicted sales of Jedward’s first single. Instead
of buckling down and finishing what needs to be done, we suddenly realise
that our rooms are in desperate need of a tidy, or that we have neglected
Facebook for four minutes too long.
Alas, procrastination is a universal human student condition. But I’m here to
say that that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
It’s rational for us to avoid tasks that make us uncomfortable and favour
those that offer instant gratification. Admittedly, procrastination seems a little
counterintuitive – the very definition of the word means that we’re not doing
what we “should” be doing – but strictly speaking, it’s impossible to avoid
procrastination, as there are always a million other things that you could be
working on at any time. The trick is to choose one type of procrastination
above another.

Procrastination can be split into three types, depending on what is being

Hi my darling! How you’ve been? In the first place I hope you had the best
holidays ever and at the same time I would love to wish you a fantastic New
Year!

Christmas and New Year’s Eve were both amazingly fun! We’ve all enjoyed our
time and because we love partying now it’s time to celebrate love.

To my mind, it doesn’t really matter if you’ve found or not your soul mate.
You can always be in love with your life, isn’t it? And even though I don’t
know how much do you agree with me I still believe you should enjoy
Valentine’s Day.

Whether you’re going out with your boyfriend/girlfriend you have to look

The Princess and the Frog (U)

Finally, an animation that does not involve 3D glasses! It is a tall order these days to just warrant an animated film
in good old-fashioned, rich, immersive 2D. This may sound quaint, but watching The Princess and the Frog just
reminds you how valuable hand-drawn animation is.

The story is based on the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale of ‘The Frog Prince’. A voodoo curse is conjured upon
a prince, which turns him into a frog. In order to break the spell he has to kiss a princess, which he mistakes for
an African-American girl named Tiana. After Tiana kisses the frog prince, she herself turns into a frog and both are
lost in the bayou.

The film is pretty archaic and nonetheless harmless. It seems unfair to weigh it up against such 3D animations
like Up (which is obviously more appealing and superior). However, no matter how lightweight and procedural the
whole narrative arc is, it is amiable enough to pass a good Saturday afternoon. I would certainly endorse the film
for hand drawn 2D animation alone.

I think that £195 a high price but not too much. Of course it is a rise
on last year’s price, but what do people expect with the considerable
investment made by the university. There are two angles I can see;

• Have more external members to subsidise the students, al-

though this will mean the facilities are more crowded and less time
and space for students.
• Increase the price of student membership and cap the number
of external members. This gives more use of facilities but would equate
to a huge membership price, well outside any students budget.

What we are left with is a compromise, which allows moderate facil-

Equestrian Trophy Team’s first comp of the year

The Equestrian club is relatively small compared to the more well-known
sports, but we still manage to have two teams in the BUCS league and
an additional Friendly team who also compete under BUCS rules. Our
Trophy Team had our first competition, hosted by Brighton University, on
what was the worst possible day it could have been – the day it started
to snow! (For the first time, it’s snowed a lot since!) However, none of
this ‘fair weather riders’ nonsense – the show must go on.
BUCS riding competitions consist of Dressage in the morning, followed
by showjumping in the afternoon. Four unknown horses are used for
each and one person from each uni rides each horse. Due to a recent
rule change, the combinations are now selected randomly, which came
as a bit of a surprise to us as we hadn’t been informed of this; so much
for our fool-proof strategy we had tactfully concocted over pizza the
night before!
The Dressage could have gone significantly better – my horse decided
