MATHEMATICS
A number is a mathematical object use in counting and measuring. A notational symbol which represents a
number is called numeral. In mathematics, a number has been extended over the years to include such
numbers as 0, negative numbers, rational numbers, irrational numbers, and complex numbers. Numbers can
have interesting patterns.
Numbers obtained by adding : Arithmetic Sequence
Numbers obtained by multiplying : Geometric Sequence
Square numbers: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81
Cube numbers : 1, 8, 27, 64,125, 216, 343, 512, 729.
Fibonacci Numbers: numbers obtained by adding previous two etc.
Fibonacci sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, ...
A Sequence whose numbers are obtained by summing the preceding two numbers.
The next number is found by adding up the two numbers before it.
The 2 is found by adding the two numbers before it (1+1)
Similarly, the 3 is found by adding the two numbers before it (1+2),and the 5 is (2+3),and so on!
Project Objective :
To explore Fibonacci numbers and their existence in nature.
The Fibonacci numbers are Nature's numbering system. They appear everywhere in Nature, from the leaf
arrangement in plants, to the pattern of the florets of a flower, the bracts of a pinecone, or the scales of a
pineapple. The Fibonacci numbers are therefore applicable to the growth of every living thing, including a
single cell, a grain of wheat, a hive of bees, and even all of mankind.
Plants do not know about this sequence - they just grow in the most efficient ways. Many plants show the
Fibonacci numbers in the arrangement of the leaves around the stem. Some pine cones and fir cones also
show the numbers, as do daisies and sunflowers. Sunflowers can contain the number 89, or even 144. Many
other plants, such as succulents, also show the numbers. Some coniferous trees show these numbers in the
bumps on their trunks. And palm trees show the numbers in the rings on their trunks.
In the case of tapered pinecones or pineapples, we see a double set of spirals one going in a
clockwise direction and one in the opposite direction. When these spirals are counted, the two sets are found
to be adjacent Fibonacci numbers.

As well, many flowers have a Fibonacci number of petals. Some, like this rose, also have Fibonacci,
or Golden Spiral, petal arrangements. Branching plants also exhibit Fibonacci numbers. Again, this design
provides the best physical accommodation for the number of branches, while maximizing sun exposure.

Task 1
1. Have an online look and find flowers with 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21 petals. Write their names and paste
photograph aesthetically in your home work note book to explore Fibonacci numbers existence in nature.
2. Count the no. of florets (clockwise and anti clockwise) in the spiral of cauliflower.
3. Take a closer look at a single floret (break one off near the base of your cauliflower).It is a mini
cauliflower with its own little florets all arranged in spiral around the centre.Count the spiral in both
directions. How many are there?
4. What value do you learn from the nature to obey Fibonacci sequence? Write result (Q2 to Q4) in
yourhome work note book & pasteyour pics while doing the cauliflower activity in form of evidence.
