AlthoughAIU'scriteriaforgrantingaparticulardegreeisgenerallythesameasthebroadmajorityof
institutions,ourpracticeofgrantingacademiccreditfor"LifeExperience"isjustrecentlygaining
acceptanceintheacademiccommunity.
DevelopmentofCourse&Curricula
AtAIUthedevelopmentofcourseandcurriculaisacollaborativeactivity,conducted
betweenthestudentandtheAcademicAdvisor.Eachstudent'scurriculaisunique,and
developedasaresultofthemutualeffortsofthestudent,theacademicstaffandthe
academicadvisor.
Thesupervisingdeanofacademicadvisorsholdsadoctoratedegreeineducationwith
specialtyincourseandcurriculadesign.Thestudent'sacademicadvisorworksdirectlywith
thesupervisingdeaninestablishingthestudentscurriculum(SeeAvailablePrograms).

Review&Evaluation
Afterinitialreviewandevaluationofthestudent's
academicandlife/professionalbackground,by
theAcademicCommittee,thestudent'sacademic
statusisdefined.Thisdefinitionestablishesthe
approximatenumberofacademiccredithoursthe
universitywillgrantthestudenttowardthe
student'sdesignateddegreeprogram.Thestudent
academicstatusissubjecttochangebasedupon
theresultsofthestudent'scourseandcurriculum
research(C&C),whichistheobjectiveofoneof
therequiredorientationcourses.
CourseSelectionProcess,CourseandCurriculum
OrientationsCourse(C&C)
TofulfilltherequirementsoftheC&CCourse,thestudentperformsresearch,(usingthe
Internetorotherapprovedresources),toinvestigateandselectcoursesfromatleast2,AIU
approvedcollegesoruniversities,offeringthesamedegreelevelanddisciplineasthe
Student'sdesignateddegreeprogram.
Thestudentwillselectcoursesbaseduponthestudent'sneedtoacquiretheknowledgeand
mastertheobjectivesdefined,inthecoursedescriptionsandobjectives,asitemizedinthe
coursecatalogsofsuchapprovedinstitutions.Thestudentwillbetheinitialarbiterofthe
coursesselected.Thestudentwillcompilealistofsuchsubjects,sufficienttofulfillthe
credithourrequirement,asdefinedinthestudent'sacademicstatusreportabove.
TheculminationoftheC&Cresearchcourseistheclasssessionwiththeacademicadvisor.
Duringthisclass,thestudent'scoursesandcurriculawillbeestablished,andapproved.
CourseModification
IntheeventtheStudentdiscovers,whileconductingC&Cresearchaneedforadditional
coursesabovethenumberdefinedbytheAcademicCommitteeinthestudentacademic
statusreport,thestudentwillinformtheacademicadvisorandtheadditionalcourseswillbe
includedinthestudent'scurriculum.
Conversely,shouldthestudentfailtodiscoverasufficientnumberofcoursestofulfillthe
numberdefinedabove,(ineffect,theStudent'slevelofknowledgeincludesall,ormost,of
thecourseobjectives,ofthecoursesgenerallyrequiredforthedegreeprogram),thestudent
willselectcourses,sufficienttofulfillthenumberdefined,andbepermittedtochallenge
thesecourses.Inthisevent,thechallengedcourseswillappearonthestudent'sofficial
transcript,withthegradeearnedinthechallenge.
Byemployingthisparadigm,AIUfacilitatesthedevelopmentofcurriculauniquelymatched
toeachstudent,anddesignedtoaccomplishtheachievementofthedesignateddegreeina
mostefficientandeffectivemanner.
