GRAMMAR

ARTICLES:

Articles are adjectives. a an and the are the articles.

INDEFINITE ARTICLES:
a and an are called the Indefinite article. a is used before a word beginning
with a consonant letter and an is used before a word beginning in a vowel letter.
Eg: This is a book ,
I am a girl
This is an egg
, It is an orange
EXCEPTIONS
There is an exception to the above rule. Sometimes a is used before a word
beginning in a vowel letter and an before a consonant.
Eg: an heir
But
a hotel
an honestman
a horse
an honour
a hen
an MLA
a men
an honorary degree
a mango
a happy day
In the above case the pronunciation of the word begins not in a
consonant but in a vowel . so an is used.
But a hotel like words begin in the h sound which is a consonant. So a
is used before them.
An easy rule to remember whether a or an is to be used is to find out the easy
pronunciation of the word without any twist of the tongue.
Eg: a European
But
an empire
a union
an uncle
a university
an underground
a universal
an upper room
a unilateral
an unknown fact
a useful
an utter failure
a one rupee note
an only remedy
Here also the pronunciation of the words makes clear which is applicable.
In a European the word is pronounced uropian not Eeropean.
