~ WORKSHOPS May- June ~

Oil Painting Workshop May 16
Veteran oil painter and teacher James Norman will
teach an oil painting workshop Realism Through
Abstraction Saturday May 16, 10 am 4 pm at SASI.
James will show us how to explore the use of
abstract shapes to give our paintings drama and
power. He will demonstrate the use of strong value
contrast to catch your eye across the room. With
James help we will try to define what is necessary and
more importantly what is unnecessary in our
composition, all the time being very aware of color,
surface and texture.
Cost is $55 per person.
Contact Southern Arts
Society at 704-739-5585 to sign up and pay for the
class. A supply list will be available.
Watercolor/Acrylic Collage Class June 5-6
Local artist and educator Dianne Garner will teach a
two part workshop on watercolor and acrylic collage at
SASI Fri June 5, 1-4 pm and Sat June 6, 10 am-4 pm.
Diane will show you how to paint tissue paper to use in
collage. You can also use your own papers, stamps
and stencils to make a unique piece of art. No
experience necessary. Some supplies will be provided.
Cost is $40 for both days. Contact Southern Arts
Society at 704-739-5585 to sign up and pay for the
class. A supply list will be available.

OFFICERS 2015

Dear SASI Members,

I hope everyone is enjoying the spring time even
though weve be experiencing a lot of rain. It feels good
to see the nice green grass and spring flowers that we
enjoy here in this region. My family and friends up North
are still experiencing cooler weather and periodic bouts of
snow.
I want to thank everyone who has been volunteering
over the last few months, its been a huge help. We have
had more and more folks asking how they can help; in
fact, we had five new members help us out at the last
reception. We all enjoyed the evening with a great turn
out with everyone doing their share of the load. We
made several sales from the show that evening, which
was a wonderful thing to see happen. I, also, want to
thank Jewel Reavis for her wonderful dedication to SASI
and its members; she continues to do a wonderful job
hanging our shows and paying attention to detail as she
does so. Plus, she picks up the slack whenever asked.
As well, I want to thank Camiel Bradshaw for her untiring
dedication to SASI, without her much would not get done.
There is one concern that I want to address. As you all
may or may not be aware that we hold an open meeting
for members the first Tuesday of each month. The
attendance has been very poor over the last several
months. Its a concern because much work is put into
the planning of these meetings by finding fellow members
who are willing to come in and give demonstrations of
various artistic methods that would be of interest to us
all. It is sad to have a fellow member show up prepared
to share their talent with us and have no one to show up
but the officers, the chairperson of the education
committee, and one or two members. The attendance
has been waning for some time and Im not sure why or
what is the reason for the low participation by our
members. We need your input to determine whether or
not we continue these meetings for members on the first
Tuesday of each month.
Please
consider
sending
an
email
to
southernartssociety@gmail.com and let us know what
your thoughts are about keeping the meetings going.

Also, let us know what we might do to make the

meetings more meaningful for you, our member(s)
(i.e., a different day/time; different format; different
material, etc.) If we do not receive feedback from you
and receive suggestions to keep the meetings going,
well assume its time to stop them for lack of interest.
Address the email to me, Ron Shepard, with Tuesday
Meetings in the subject line so I can give it my
undivided attention. Thank you for your cooperation
in this matter.
Again, thanks for all the new volunteers that have
been coming to bat, its appreciated. We are in need
of one or two key people to open and close the depot
a couple of times a month. Please consider stepping
forward and offering us your time.
Artfully yours,
Ron Shepard President
