Philanthropy
Each March for the past three years, the Delta Phi
Epsilon Educational Foundation has held a virtual
fundraiser. This year, Dimes for D Phi E (D4D)
raised $134,268.41 overall. Epsilon Upsilon was
one of the first chapters to go All In with a
donation of at least $19.17 from each active
member! The chapter and its supporters donated
well over $1,100 altogether.

The Epsilon Upsilon Chapter also held an

Alumnae Fundraising Challenge in March with the
goal of raising $1,000 for Anorexia Nervosa and
Associated Disorders (ANAD). Although the goal
was not reached, every alumna donor received a
thank you note, and the largest donation received a
personalized gift.

Kacie Flynn started a flurry of activity when she posted the Epsilon Upsilon
family tree on Facebook. Many older alumnae surfaced with valuable memories.
As a result, a lot of blanks were filled in. Thanks to everyone who helped
preserve the history of our active West Coast chapter!

Adopt-A-Sister
Sydney Newton would like to thank all of the amazing alumnae who volunteered
to mentor an Epsilon Upsilon Active sister. It was a slow and rough start, but we
finally get to see how this will work out so we can refine the program. This is a
great opportunity to connect with actives and offer them your professional advice
and guidance. Please be on the lookout in the upcoming school year for another
opportunity to get paired with a graduating senior! If you have any ideas or
suggestions, Sydney would love to hear them!

Formal Weekend Alumnae Welcome Dinner was held at Rita's
On Friday, April 10th. It was an informal mixer attended by both
actives and alumnae.

Black and White Ball

On Saturday, April 11th, at Blue Lake Casino, the 26th anniversary Spring Formal was held. The theme was
Black and White Ball. Jaclyn Todd, a senior who has already decided to join CAA, received the Lovely
Purple Iris award from the chapter.

The Outstanding Graduating Senior Award was presented by Kacie

Flynn on behalf of the California Alumnae Association. Many of you
will recognize Samantha Barton as this past years Alum Coordinator.
Sam was chosen by the CAA Awards Committee for representing the
best of Delta Phi Epsilon. She will receive complimentary 2015-2016
CAA membership, including IHQ alumnae dues.

Farewell Brunch
On Sunday, April 12th, the chapter hosted a Farewell Brunch in the Kate Buchanan Room on campus. The
women enjoyed bagels, muffins, coffee, and juice while recalling moments from the night before.

Humboldt
Kacie Flynn hosted Harry Potter Night on January 30th at her house.
On March 13th, alumnae gathered for Arts Arcata and to kick off
Founders Day weekend. Trivia night was Sunday April 19th at Six
Rivers Brewery.
On March 29th, the Dash of Color Run was held at College of the
Redwoods. Several alumnae and about seventeen actives participated
as runners and volunteers.

On February 21st, Kayla Mae Talkington, from the Beta Upsilon

Chapter, arranged a meeting at Bluxome Street Winery in San
Francisco. Cori Shearer and her guest Courtney Minich, both from
the Delta Nu Chapter, Lynna Do, and Brenda Marston enjoyed some
wine and snacks before heading to Pier 39 to let Courtney try some
clam chowder.

Bay Area
Lindsey Solenberger, Rose McGovern, Erica LeBarron, Lynna Do,
and Brenda Marston gathered for Founders Day Brunch on
Sunday, March 15th at Basil Leaf Caf in Danville. Epsilon
Upsilon, Alpha Iota, and Epsilon Rho were all represented. After
lingering over brunch, the ladies took a stroll down the main street.

San Mateo Alumnae Panhellenic Association

SMAPA held its annual scholarship luncheon on March 18th at Dominics at
Oyster Point. Proceeds from the fundraiser went to scholarships for graduating
seniors from five local high schools, to be awarded in May. Brenda Marston
volunteered as a greeter at sign-in, solicited raffle item donations from three local
businesses, made a $50 donation on behalf of our sorority, helped make
centerpieces, and loaned her keyboard for the event.
The theme of the luncheon was View the Past - Create the Future to coincide
with the 100th anniversary of the creation of silent films. We had a representative
from a silent film museum in the East Bay, Niles Essanay, come make a
presentation on the history of silent films. She brought with her memorabilia,
photos, and Bronco Billys Oscar from 1957. A short silent film was shown,
accompanied by live piano music.
The luncheon included a raffle and silent auction of many items donated by
members, supporters, and local businesses. A list of the donors, including Delta
Phi Epsilon, was inserted in the event program. The centerpieces (donated antique
tea cups filled with Jelly Bellies) were sold for $25 each.
Since 1996, SMAPA has awarded over $65,000 to 117 San Mateo County college-bound senior women from 19
high schools.

Los Angeles Area

On February 21st, the LA alumnae made their 5th Annual visit to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank to bag
fresh potatoes and cabbage. There are at least three huge warehouses and 200-300 volunteers each Saturday
working to distribute produce to food banks throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Each bags ends up with
a member of an ever-growing population in need. It is quite an operation but it truly functions as a well-oiled
machine. The experience is incredibly worthwhile: a lot of hard work but somehow fun. A special thank
you to the husbands and friends of sisters who joined us. You are always welcome!
March 14th was Founders Day Lunch. This year we dined at
the Lakeside Caf in their outdoor dining area under a canopy
of trees overlooking the lovely Los Encinos State Historic
Park, complete with friendly ducks. When I made the
reservation I was concerned about a Plan B if the weather
should be bad. Apparently, I was being quite foolish. It was
over 90 degrees and no rain in sight. Good food, good friends
to share it with and a lovely tranquil setting it just doesnt get
any better.

San Fernando Valley Alumnae Panhellenic Association

March 7th was the Bunco Night fundraiser organized by the SFVAPA. What a fun night!! Aside from
the Bunco game there was a 50/50 raffle. Proceeds help to fund several scholarships. May or June will
be their presentation luncheon.

LA Alumnae Panhellenic Association

LAAPA held our annual benefit Bingo benefit on March 22nd. We had a great
time playing Legendary Bingo at Hamburger Marys in West Hollywood. We
were joined by celebrity guest Emmy-nominated actress and writer Carolyn
Hennesy. This event was a great success with 98% of the available tickets sold!

Panhellenic Alumnae South Bay Association

Our 48th Annual PASBA Scholarship Benefit Luncheon was held
on March 28th. It was a lot of hard work from everyone involved
but very much worth it. It was a great success. The ladies of
PASBA were very happy to have a D PHI E representative.
Maybe next year we can have a whole table for D Phi E.

San Diego Area

Founder's Day lunch at Stone Brewing Liberty Station was cancelled due to lack of response. If you wanted
to go but didnt hear about it, please contact Barbara Trageser to ensure you dont miss the next invitation.

Upcoming Events

Sacramento Alumnae Panhellenic Association

The SAPA Annual Scholarship Luncheon was postponed and scholarship winners will be determined in
May.
SAPA needs alternate representation from Delta Phi Epsilon for the upcoming year. Meetings are held the
fourth Tuesday of each month, except June-August. Contact Rose McGovern for more information.

Bay Area
On May 17th, a team of seven alumnae will go 12k from Bay to Breakers wearing purple sparkle skirts and
unicorn or D Phi E running tops. This race has a reputation for being really wild, so look for us to post
pictures, possibly censored.
Members of the DPhiE Runs SF group Facebook group are mostly alumnae, though any sister is welcome to
join the fun. They previously ran the Nike Womens Half Marathon and loved every moment of it. They are
always looking to participate in events in San Francisco and beyond, such as the Napa or Tahoe Ragnar
Relay, See Jane Run Half Marathon, and Humboldt Marathon.

Los Angeles Area

On May 2nd at 1pm, a handful of alumnae and their families will take a tour at the 56,000-seat Dodger
Stadium. This behind-the-scenes tour lets fans visit some of the most restricted and non-public areas and
view the Stadium from a whole new perspective. They will see World Series trophies and MVP awards and
visit the VIP lounge behind home plate, the dugout and the Vin Scully Press Box.

Los Angeles Alumnae Panhellenic Association

General Meeting and Election

Not only is the primary election season underway on a national level, but it is also about to begin for our
California Alumnae Association. Here is the tentative schedule so far:
On May 1st, a rather detailed email will be sent about changes to our constitution and by-laws, job
descriptions for each position, and an announcement about how to nominate someone or yourself for a
position on our leadership team for the fiscal year of July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016.
Nominations must be returned by May 14th. Late nominations cannot be accepted.
On May 16th the proposed slate of officers for our annual officer election will be distributed. All ballots
must be returned by May 31 in order to be counted. Late ballots cannot be accepted.
Our annual General meeting is tentatively scheduled for the morning of Saturday, June 20, 2015. Please
let me know if this is a bad date for you and offer an alternate. I tried to miss graduations and Fathers
day in picking the date but let me know if another date works better.
New officers take office on July 1, 2015.

Alumnae Panhellenic Involvement

Did you know that you can join an Alumnae Panhellenic in your area? It doesnt matter what chapter
you came from or whether you are affiliated with a college in that area. CAA will even pay the dues!
Why join an Alumnae Panhellenic Association?

Make friends and enjoy fun activities.

Build your leadership skills and professional network.
Provide Scholarship funds to young women in your area.
Panhellenic sisters may remember the Delta Phi Epsilon women/houses from their campuses!
Show others how awesome D Phi E alumnae are!
Prepare for volunteer positions with International Headquarters.
Help D Phi E prepare for expansion in the West.

Several CAA members, including Brenda Marston, Margie Janes, Rose McGovern, Gina Curtis, and
Roberta Salin have been involved in their local organizations over the past year. These women would
be happy to share their experiences with anyone who is interested in joining them.
CAA is planning to add a VP Panhellenic to the Leadership team for the next term. If the change is
approved by our membership, Alumnae Panhellenic delegates will have even more support. In
addition, Gina Curtis and Rose McGovern are Alumnae Specialists on the IHQ NPC Committee.
Gina has been assigned to work with CAA, along with about ten other successful D Phi E Alumnae
Associations, while Rose has been assigned to work with struggling/dormant associations.
Feel free to contact Gina, Roberta, or any of the women mentioned above, for more information.

A Letter from Linda

April 30, 2015

To my lovely sistersI was looking at the Strategic Goals of Delta Phi Epsilon from a number of years ago.
Included on the list were the following:
-Celebrate our history and traditions. D Phi E is 98 this year!
-Inspire and develop our members to become responsible and engaged citizens.
-Engage members in meaningful experiences
-Ensure financial viability.
This past year, we were proud to call fifty-one (51) sisters dues-paying members of the
California Alumnae Association. I am so grateful to all of you who understand that
yearly commitment of dues. You have helped ensure financial viability for our CAA
and for the alumnae program of the sorority. We make a difference.
The yearly dues for a Lifetime Link are $15. If you have not become a Lifetime Link,
yearly dues are $35. (CAA will pay $19.17 to Headquarters on your behalf.) A
Lifetime Link is a one-time payment of $250 for lifetime dues paid to the
International Sorority. You can become a Lifetime Link at
dphie.org/links/payalumnaedues. Current members will receive a PayPal invoice at
the end of April for 2015-16 CAA dues. All dues received this spring will apply to
2015-16.
This year our expenses were relatively small. Next year we will help fund both Chapter
and Alumnae Association delegates to the 2016 International Convention. We also
pay dues to the Alumnae Panhellenic Associations on which Delta Phi Epsilon is
represented. Future expenses include funds for the celebration of our Centennial in
two years. Your contribution to these goals is meaningful and necessary.
Yours in True Sisterhood,
Linda Hyman

As I said in the last newsletter I was going to start a column wherein we could
have a dialogue on a variety of topics so here goes. All commentary is
encouraged but lets keep it respectful to all recipients and participants.
Topic: What do you think of the United States having a woman President
Republican, Democrat, or third party?
My personal opinion is that it is long overdue. Women are just as capable, if
not more so, as a man at making the tough decisions. I would hope a woman
President would bring a higher priority to those foreign, social and economic
issues that might appear to be more important to women and encourage and
stipulate at least an even representation of women on those panels and
committees that make the recommendations and decisions at the national level.
If that strategy were to also filter down to, or spread out to, the state level, all
the better. I think we, as women, could help to accomplish so much more in
our government if we were to have more opportunities at participation. Its
time we had more seats at the discussion/negotiation table.
I see this as an issue similar to the push in education to encourage young girls
to pursue an education and career in science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics (STEM), long areas of study with an under-representation of
female students. By increasing the female participation of women in these
areas we can begin to see more women in these professional careers,
equalizing salary for women to men, and moving women closer to breaking the
proverbial glass ceiling.
What do you think? Drop me a note at rsalin@sbcglobal.net. I will
consolidate the comments (anonymously annotated if you request it to be) and
post them back to our group page.

About Our Organization

The California Alumnae Association supports the Epsilon Upsilon Chapter and
expands the representation of Delta Phi Epsilon on the West Coast. Alumnae
living in California are welcome to join the CAA, regardless of Chapter
affiliation. We also encourage sisters from California chapters to maintain their
membership while out of state.
Officers run the organization as a whole, while Area Coordinators plan local
events. Members may attend events in any area, and occasionally two or three
coordinators co-host events.
Delta Lambda and Epsilon Upsilon also hold reunions for their own members.
Being a part of the CAA is a great way to make sure you hear about these
events.
The CAA is one of the most successful Alumnae Associations in the Sorority!
We have been represented at the last three Biennial Conventions and hope to
continue demonstrating our strength to IHQ and serving as a role model for
other Alumnae Associations. This strengthens IHQs ability to eventually
reopen or add chapters on the west coast.
