A Drug Study
1. Accupril
( Distributed by Zuellig; ACE Inhibitor; Rx only; Cat D; Quinapril HCL; tablet)
Indications and Dosage : HTN Px not on Diuretics initial 1020mg/day(maintenance 20-40mg(single or 2 doses
HTN Px on Concomitant diuretics initial 5g/day
CHF intial 5mg once/bid ;mainte 10-40mg in 2 divided
doses
Administration : taken on an empty stomach; before meals ; same time of day
Contraindications : Hypersensitivity; hx of angioedema r/t to previous tx w/ ACE;
pregnancy; co admin of aliskiren in px w/ diabetes
Special Precuations : renal & hepatic impairment; sx&anest; monitor wbc counts in
px with collagen vascular & or renal dse; Monitor K ;
angioedema;anyphylactoidrxns; hypogly; impaied ability to drive/operate
machinery; pregancy; children
Adverse Drug Reactions: headache, dizziness, cough, fatigue. Rhinitis, n & v,
myalgia
Drug Interactions: red. absorption of tetracylines; inc lithium conc; K sparing
diuretics; K supplements and K containing sal substitute; co admin with
NSAIDS,ACE,COX2 inhibitors; volume depleted or px with renal problems; Dual
blockage of RAS w/ angiotensin receptor blockers; ACE inhibitors; aliskerin
Storage : <25C; avoid moisture; protect from light; red brown triangular biconvex
2. Accuzide
( Distributed by Zuellig; Diuretics ACE inhibitor/Direct renin inhibitor; Quinapril HCL
20mg, HCLthiazode 12.5mg; rx only, cat d, tablet)
Indication and Dosage: HTN; combination therapy; px w/o diu initial tab;mainte
1tab
Concomitant diu initial 5mg
Administration : taken with/without food
Contraindications : Hypersensitivity to other sulfonamide derived drugs; hx of
angioedema r/t prev. tx w ACE; anuria; pregnancy; co admin of aliskerin w/ px w/
diabetes
Special Precautions: px w/ hx of angioedema unr/t ACE inc risk of angioedema;
symptomatic htn in salt/vol depleted px; px undergoing desensitization w/
hymenoptera venom; LDL apheresis; renal and hepatic pxs; SLE; major sx;
myopia;glaucoma; light headedness @ 1st few days;neutropenia
Adverse Drug Rxs: headache. Dizziness, cough, fatigue and myalgia
Drug Interactions: dec. tetra abxn; inc lithium levels; alcohol, barbis, narcotics may
potentiate orthohtn; NSAIDS can reduce diuretic effect; corticosteroids, pressor
amines, skeletal muscle relaxant, antidiabetic drugs, other antiHTN.; almost same
w/ Accupril
Storage : <30C; protect from light; film coated; pink scored triangular biconvex 50s
3. Adriblastina RD
( DoxorubicinHCL,Zuellig,Cytotoxic chemo, Ca drug, rx only, IV, CAT D)
Indications and Dosage : Acute Lymphoma, CAs : IV starting dose 60-90mg/m2 as
single or divided dose over 3 sucessive days or given on days 1 & 8.
- Combination w/ other cytotoxic drugs 30-60mg/m2/cycle
- Hepatic Dys Bilirubin 1 2-3mg/dl of starting dose
- ->3 mg/dl of starting dose

Administration : IV ; vesical/arterial - .9%nacl og d5glucosesolution for not < 3min


and not >10 min to minimize thrombosis and extravasation; direct push is not
recommended
Contraindication: myelosupression; hepatic impairment; myocardial insufficiency &
infarction; arryhtmias; prev max tx of doxorubicin bicins and other anthracyclines;
UTI; bladder and hematuria;pregnancy
Special Precautions: px should recover from prev toxicity; monitor cardiac fxn;
obese px,; myelosupression
Adverse Drug rxs: refer to MIMS: too many
Drug Interaction inc effect with cyp3a4.cyp2d6 or pgp inhibitors; dec in cyp34a
inducers like phenobarbi, phenytoin; potentiate toxicity of other anticancer; inc
plasma conc w paclitaxel
ATC classification- doxorubicin cytotoxic antibiotic

4. Advil/ Advil Suspension for KIDS
(Zuellig; Ibuprofen; NSAIDs; non Rx; cat c 1st to 2nd trimester; cat D at 3rd trimester)
Indication : mild to moderate pain; inflammation in dysmenorrheal, h/a during
migraine. Post op and dental pain;muskoskeletal d/o, reduction of fever
Dosage : Softgel Adult 200-400mg 4-6hrly ; MAX 1200mg daily
Children
susp 11-12yr 15ml; 9 10yr 12.5ml ; 6 -8yr 10; 4 5yr 7.5;2-3yr 5ml QID
Administration : with food; taken immediately after meals
Contraindications: hypersensitivity to aspirin/NSAIDs; hx of GI ulcer/bleeding;
pregnancy last trimester
Special Precautions: Do not take > 10 days for pain or >3 days for fever ; severe
allergic rxn skin
Adverse Drug Reactions : Abdominal pain, diarrhea, n & v, GI bleeding and ulcer
Drug Interactions : Anticoagulants; diuretics; other antiHPN, corticosteroids, SSRIs.
Cyclosporine, tacrolimus. Lithium methotrexate
5. Aldactone
(Spironolactone;Diuretic antiHPN; Rx only; Cat c cat D in gestational HTN; zuellig)
Indication and Dosage : Essential HPN; preoptx for primary hyperaldosteronism;
establishing dx of primary hyperaldosternism; CHF; diuretic induced hypoK/hypoMG;
prophylaxis of hypoKtakinfdigitalis;mngt of hirsutism
- Essential HTN Adult 50 -100mg/day if svere increased at
2wk intercal up to 200mg/day
-CHF adult 100mg/day , maintenance 25100day
-Cirrhosis urinary Na/k ratio
>1:100mg/day --------<1:200-400mg/day
-nephrotic
syndrome 100-200mg day

renal failure; addisonsdse or other dse with hyperkalemial use of
eplerenone;pregnancy
Special Precautions: concominant use with k retaining druhs of K supplements;
renal impairment; anesth and lactation
Adverse Drug rxn: gynecomastia; GI upset; drowsiness; lethargy; h/a and mental
confusion; ataxia., impotence, stevens Johnson syndrome; toxic epidermal

necrolysis; drug rash and menstrual irregularities; post menopausal bleeding;


agranulocytoses, urticaria and fever

Drug Interactions : concominant use of drugs to cause hyperK -> sever hyperK; may
diminish vascular response in norepi; inhibits clearance of digoxin; k supplements;

6. Aldazide
(Pfizer; spironolactone25mg hydroflumethiazide 25mg; diuretics; low ceiling

Indication and Dosage Essential HTN, edema, CHF, liver cirrhosis,
nephritic syndrome, idiopathic edema; ESSENTIAL HTN 25/25

Contraindications: hypersensitivity to other sulfonamidederived drugs;

benign breast neoplasm, breast and abdl pain, n & v, pancreatitis,
leucopenia , thrombocytopenia, abN hepatic fxn, electrolyte imb,
drowsiness, changes in libido, menstrual, photosensitivity, rash, acute
renal failure
Drug Interactions: other diuretics, antiHTN, norepi, anest, digoxin,
ammonium Cl or chlestyramine, colestipol. Lithium, muscle relaxants,
corticosteroids, acth, Nsaids

7. Alfadil XL
(Pfizer; doxazosinmesylate; cat c; rx only; drug for bladder & prostate d/o; class
of alpha-adrenoreceptor antagonists, peripherally-acting antiadrenergic agents;
used in tx of HTN)
Indications: tx of clinical s&sy in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH & for
reduced urinary flow assctd w/ BPH
Dosage: max recommended dose: 8 mg once daily, usual maintenance
dose: 4mg/daily : optimal effect may take up to 4wks
Administration : may be taken or without food
Overdosage : htn = immediately place in a supine head down position
Contraindications : hypersensitivity to quinazolines, doxazosin or any
other aldadil XL
Special Precaution : Hepatic impairment & severe GI narrowing, postural
htn, intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS), may impair ability to drive
or operate; pregnancy & lactation
Adverse Drug Reactions : vertigo, asthenia, peripheral edema, abdl pain,
dyspepsia, nausea & flu like symptoms; bronchitis, dyspnea, rhinitis, htn&
postural, IFIS
Drug Interaction: PDE5 inhibitors; ACE inhibitors; adrenergic neuron
blockers, alcohol. Aldesleukin, general anest, AIIA, MAOis, antipsychotics,

anxiolytics & hypnotics, anth HPNs. Ldopa and methyldopa, moxonidine,


baclofen, nitrates, alprostadil, hydralazine, minoxidil&nitroprusside,
corticosteroids, estrogen & digoxin
Storage : <30C and protect from moisture CR tab 4mg
8. Aromasin
(Zuellig; Exemestane; Cancer Hormone Therapy; Rx only;CAT X; enzyme inhibitors; used in
endocrine therapy)
Indication and Dosage: adjuvant tx of postmenopausal women w/ estrogen receptor
or unknown early breast CA to reduce risk of reoccurrence (distant &locoregional;
1st line tx of ABCa in women w/ natural or induced postmenopausal status; 2 nd line if
with whose dse has progressed following anti estrogen therapy; 3 rd line tx if ABCa
following multiple hormone therapies
- 1 tab

Administration : taken with food/after meal
Contraindication : hypersensitivity, pregnancy
Special Precautions : women w/ premenopausal endocrine status.; monitor bone
density and tx of osteoporosis; concominant use w/ estrogen products

depression, headache, dizziness, carpal tunnel syndrome, inc sweating, rash,
alopecia, muscoskeletal pain, osteoporosis, pain, leg edema, urticarial, pruritus

9. Caltrate Plus
(metro drug; calcium with vitamins, minerals pre/post natal, antienemics; CA 600mg, vit D
200IU copper 1mg, mg 50mg Manganese 1.8mg, Zn 7.5mg; OTC)
Indication and Dosage : prevention and tx of osteoporosis ; 1 tab bid
Administration : taken with food
10.Celebrex
(zuellig; celecoxib; NSAIDs;rx only; cat c but cat d in 3 rd trimester; anti rheumatic coxibs)
Indication and Dosage :symptomatictx of OA&RA. Relief of ankylosing spondylitis;
acute pain; acute dysmenorrhea. Acute and chronic lower back pain

Indication and Dosage : tx& prevention of vit& mineral defieciency

14.Chloromycetin
( zuellig; chloramphenicol suspension : palmitate, injection : succinate; rx only; cat c;
amphenicols tx of systemic infection)
Indication and Dosage : acute infections caused by salmonella typhi / H influenza,
rickettia, lymphogranuloma psittacosis group, various gm ve bacteria causing
bacteremia, meningitis and other serious infections, cystic fibrosis regiments

Indication and Dosage : Contraception :150mg ddeep IM 3 monthhly;

Adverse Drug Reactions: Menstrual irregularities; wt changes; h/a; nervousness,


abdnl pain; dizziness; asthenia; vaginitis, decreased libido
Drug Interactions: aminoglutethimide -> depress serum concentration of depo
provera

18.Diflucan
(by zuellig; fluconazole; antifungal;rx only cat c in indication: cat D if not candidiasis)
Indication and Dosage: candidemia, candida infections
Administration: w/ or w/o food
Contraindication : hypersensivity; co admin w/ terfenadine, cisapride, astemizole,
pimozide, quinidine, erythromycin
Special Precautions: monitor liver fxn; d/c tx if clinical s & sy consistent w/ devt of
liver dse; pregnancy
Adverse Drug Reaction : n & v; abdl pain; dizziness; seizures; taste perversion, QT
prolongation; leucopenia; thrombocytopenia; angioedema; face edema;
hypertriglyceridemia and hypoK
Drug Interactions : warfarin, oral sulfonylureas, phenytoin, rifampicin, cyclosporine,
theophylline, terfenadine, zidovudine, OC, losartan, benzodiazepines, cisapride,

19.Dilantin

Indication and Dosage : cap/susp control of grand mal & complex partial seizure,
tx of seizure after neuro surgery; migraine, trigeminal neuralgia; psychoses; cardiac
arrhythmias; digitalis intoxication, post event tx of MI
inj status
epilepticus of grand mal type; prevention & tx of seizures during post
neurosurgery/severe head injury
Administration : with food; when on NGT/parenteral feeding do not administer
feeds 2hr before or after a dose; be consistent @ feed times; swallow whole; do not
switch forms/brands
Contraindications : hx of hypersensitivity to phenytoin & hydantoins. Sinus
bradycardia, SA block , 2nd or 3rd degree AV block. Pts with adams stokes syndrome,
lactation
Special Preacautions : MI, hepatic impairment; porphyria; avoid abrupt withdrawal;
INJ hypotension; do not administer rapidly; monitor for suicidal ideation &
behavior; monitor ECG & BP; resp depression, hepatic impairment; purple glove
syndrome, impaired ability to drive
Adverse Drug Reactions : anaphylaxis; ataxia; slurred speech. Diplopia, nystagmus,
h/a, gingival hyperplasia, hirsutism, hypertrichosis,
Drug Interactions : antibitotics & other anticonvulsants; alcohol, antifungals,
benzodiazepines, ca channel blockers; disulfiram, inh, ssris, phenylbutazone,
tolbutamide, chronic alcohol intake, digitoxin, quinidine, corticosteroids, coumarin,
antidepressants, folic acid, fluorouracil

20.Dilzem
(by zuellig; diltiazem HCL; Calcium antagonists; cat c; )
Indication and Dosage : angina pectoris inc prinzmetals angina; mild to moderate
HTN
Administration: taken on an empty stomach; preferably before meals, SA & SR tab;
swallow whole

Contraindication : hypersensitivity , sick sinus syndrome; 2 nd or 3rd degree AV block:


hypotension, acute MI; pulmonary congestion
Special Precautions : impaired renal or hepatic fxn; heart failure; pregnancy
Adverse Drug Reactions : dizziness, h/a, edema, skin rash, bradycardia, asthenia,
flushing, 1st degree AV block, nausea
Drug Interactions : combination w/ B blockers or digitalis may enhance myocardial
depression, may increase plasma digoxin & cyclosporine level. Competitive
inhibition of metabolism w/ drugs biotransformed by CYP450. H2 antagonists,
anesth, warfarin, eryhthromycin, lithium, rifampin
Storage : <30C or <25C

21.Dynastat
(by zuellig; Parecoxib Na; NSAIDs; rx only; )
Indication and Dosage : short term tx of acute & post op pain, pre op to prevent
post op pain; can reduce opioid reqt when use concomitantly
Contraindications : hypersensitivity; post op pain ff CABG sx, hx of CVA, MI, CHF,
HTN, ischemic heart dse, CVD, pregnancy 3rd time
Special Precautions : CV & thrombotic events, hx of GI dse, aspirin and
anticoagulant therapy, hypotension, volume depletion
Drug Interactions : CYP3a4 inhibitors, ACE, thiazides & furosemides, NSAIDs, lithium
and warfarin, COX2
Storage: <30C, do not refrigerate or freeze reconstituted dynastat
22.Eliquis
(by zuellig; apixaban;anticoagulant; antiplatelet;fibrinolytics;direct factor Xa inhibitor;rx

Indication and Dosage : prevention of venous thromboembolic (VTE) in adult pts
who have undergone elective hip/knee replacement sx; stroke & systemic
embolism; nonvalvular atrial fibrillation(NVAF)
Administration: w/ or w/o food
Contraindication : hypersensitivity; active bleeding
Special Precautions: risk of hemorrhage in pts w/ congenital or acquired bleeding
d/o; bacterial endocarditis; uncontrolled HTN; recent spinal or opthalmological sx;
d/c if pts w/ CrCL <15ml/min & those undergoing dialysis;spinal anesth, children
<18yr
Adverse Drug Reactions: confusion; anemia, hemorrhage; nausea; gingival bleeding;
epistaxis; hematuria
