Storage, Handling, and Safelight Information

Safelight Recommendations

Storage
Care in storing and handling radiographic films is extremely important.
Sealed packages of film are affected
by heat; opened packages by humidity
as well as heat.

Ideally, store all film packages in an

area properly shielded from penetrating radiation and at a temperature of 10 to 24C (50 to 75F ).
Store opened packages at 30 to 50
percent relative humidity
.
Store processed radiographs at 16 to
27C (60 to 80F ) and 30 to 50 percent
relative humidity.

Safelights provide illumination for personnel to work

safely in the darkroom without fogging the exposed or
unexposed film.

For darkroom illumination that will not harm industrial

x-ray film:
Use a filter such as KODAK Safelight Filter 6B /
brown, with a KODAK Safelight Lamp. Frequently
check the lamp and filter for cracks that would allow
white light to leak through and fog the film.
Use a standard pearl 15-watt bulb in the safelight
lamp. Heat from bulbs of higher wattage may damage
the fragile safelight filter.
Position the safelight lamp at least 1.2 meters (4 feet)
from the work area.
Do not expose x-ray film to safelight for more than one
minute.
Always place the safelight filter in the housing so that
the label is right-reading. If the label is wrong-reading,
the filter will not have as long a life expectancy.

Handling
Place packages of film on edge to avoid pressuremarking the film, and so that the date is clearly visible.
Use older dated film first.
Handle radiographic film carefully to
avoid physical strains caused by pressure, creasing, buckling and friction. Do
not draw film rapidly from the carton,
film holder, or cassette, nor handle it in
any way that could cause static electrical discharges.
Handle film packages with interleaving paper with the
same care as those without interleaving paper. When
handling radiographic film, cleanliness is essential.

Relative Exposure Factors of

KODAK INDUSTREX Films
The relative film speeds in these tables are based on matched radiographs at a density of 2.0 above gross fog.
Use these values as starting points for calculating exposures. Because of rounding, averaging procedures, differences in radiation quality, processing conditions, etc., differences may occur between these values and specific
practical situations.

KODAK INDUSTREX Developer.

Manual Processing has been standardized at 4 minutes to facilitate quicker image access time and to promote
consistency in the darkroom, regardless of developer temperature. You may adjust the density of the film through
sight processing. However, because T-Grain emulsion develops faster, be sure to look at the films earlier than
you would with older technology films.

KODAK INDUSTREX Calibrated Step Tablet

This tablet is intended for use in the calibration of densitometers and similar equipment used in making diffuse
transmission density measurements. The tablet is exposed on INDUSTREX M Film, perhaps the most consistent
industrial x-ray film on the market today.
The strip has 17 density steps ranging from less than 0.20 to greater than 4.20. Each strip is calibrated according
to the ISO Standard for Diffuse Visual Transmission Density and in accordance with ANSI PH2.19-1990, ISO 52:1991, ANSI PH2.18, and ISO 5-2:1984. All density measurements are made within a circle 3 mm in diameter at
the center of each step with the strip identification number facing the densitometer diffuser.
The density values given are traceable to NIST through traceable calibrations of the instrumentation utilized in the
calibration process. This process was additionally verified by measurement of an NIST X-ray Film Step Tablet,
Standard Reference Material 1001.

Guide to Correcting Processing Artifacts

Automated Processing
Artifact

Cause

Corrective Action

Artifacts perpendicular to the direction of film travel:

Film hesitation marks
plus-density lines or bands
regularly or irregularly spaced

a. Chemical exhaustion or contamination

b. Roller hesitation
c. Out-of-round roller, or a hard spot or dirt
on the roller

a. Adjust the rate of replenishment or mix

new chemicals as necessary. Check
the replenishment tank. Check for
kinked replenishment lines.
b. Check the drive and the tension on
the drive chains.
c. Check the rollers in the developer rack.

Artifacts parallel to the direction of film travel:

Surface drying streaks
narrow wavering bands
mottled, washed out
randomly spaced
seen by reflected light

a. Under-replenished fixer
b. Dryer is too hot

a. Increase the fixer replenishment rate.

b. Set the dryer at the recommended
temperature or at the temperature
required to just dry the films.

Delay streaks
narrow bands (widths vary)
randomly sized
plus density
from the leading edge through
only part of the film

Chemical build-up on the developer re-wet

roller

Clean the re-wet roller. Raise the

solution level in the developer tank.

Artifacts occurring randomly on the film surface:

Wet pressure
plus density
faded blotches
overall graininess
decreased contrast

Exhausted or contaminated developer

Check for kinked replenishment lines.

Increase the rate of developer
replenishment.
Drain the developer tank and fill it with
fresh chemicals.
Check the condition of the replenisher
(age, oxidation, etc.).

Soft emulsion
scratches on the emulsion
pick-off or orange-peel

Inadequate hardening in the fixer step

Increase the rate of fixer replenishment.

Check for correct mixing volumes (do
not dilute).
Check that the fixer is not exhausted;
replace with fresh fixer if necessary.

5-2

Guide to Correcting Processing Artifacts continued

Manual Processing
Artifact

Cause

Corrective Action

Faults occurring before processing:

Light streaks across one axis of the film

Dark spots on one side of the film

Light spots on one side of the film
Light spots, but usually darker than fixer
splashes

Insertion of film in a channel-type hanger

that is contaminated with hypo. Hypo is
smeared across the film and causes partial
fixing.
Developer splashes (bad darkroom layout
or processing techniques)
Fixer splashes (bad darkroom layout or
processing techniques)
Water splashes (if film is developed all at
once, probably no fault will be visible)

Wash and dry all hangers thoroughly

before re-use.

Keep the loading bench dry.

Do not splash.
Keep the loading bench dry.
Do not splash.
Keep the loading bench dry.
Do not splash.

Faults occurring during processing:

Bromide drags; flow marks. Dark areas
below light regions or vice versa

Lack of agitation or too much agitation

Unfixed, undeveloped, or unwashed area

at the top of the film
Reticulation; fine network of lines on the
surface of the film
Dichroic fog; reddish brown in transmitted
light; green in reflected light

Failure to maintain solutions at the proper

level in the tanks.
Large temperature difference between
the various processing solutions.
a. Contamination of developer with fixer
b. Inadequate rinse
c. Exhausted or non-acid fixing bath
Bacterial infection of film usually, due to
prolonged washing in warm water or slow
drying in a humid atmosphere.

Small light spots having dark edges

punched out

Give 10 sec agitation on immersion

and 5 -10 sec at the beginning of
each subsequent minute of
development.
Maintain the solutions at the proper
levels.
Maintain all solutions at the
recommended temperatures.
a. Discard the contaminated solution.
b. Rinse in running water.
c. Use fresh acid fixing bath.
Avoid prolonged washing and use a
good drying cupboard.

Faults occurring during drying of the film:

Small circular light spots scattered on the
surface of the film

Drying marks. Light areas, usually streaks,

surrounded by dark edges. May be
present on both sides of the film,
but do not coincide.
Film buckled or areas of emulsion missing

Air trapped on the surface of the film, not

allowing development to occur; when the
film is fixed, a portion of the image is
removed.
Uneven drying of the gelatin, especially
drops of water running down partially
dry film.

Films sticking together during drying,

followed by forcible separation. May be
due to badly designed drying cabinet.

Agitate the film well; rap sharply to

dislodge air on the film surfaces.

Use a good drying cabinet and dry

clips for hanging films. Do not dry
films in channel-type hangers. Use
a wetting agent such as KODAK
PHOTO-FLO Solution.
Use a good drying cabinet and
allow adequate space between
the films.

5-3

Radiographic Equivalence Factor

The equivalence factor is used to calculate the equivalent thickness of steel. The equivalence factor for copper,
from the chart below, at 220 kV is 1.4. To calculate the equivalent steel thickness, multiply the thickness of copper by the equivalence factor. For example, 0.5 inches of copper is equivalent to 0.5 x 1.4 = 0.7 inches of steel.
Use a steel chart to determine the exposure for 0.7 inches of steel at 220 kV.
