For almost as long as Canadians have been riding bikes, Norco has
been making them. Over the past four decades, Norco has been reinventing how Canadians look at bikes and how they ride them. In
order to keep ahead of the pack, we draw on the knowledge of our
Factory Team, staff riders, and design team to create bikes that we
simply love to ride.
There arent too many places in the world where you can freeride on
world-class trails, do a 200-km road ride, take a spin on cruiser-perfect cycling paths, or get dropped by oat plane into remote areas for
an all mountain epic. Our backyard is denitely our playground and
our best testing
facility.
Youd think that with all the possible riding opportunities available to
us, nothing would ever get done. Sure, we ride...a lot...but were equally passionate about making quality bikes for real-world trail conditions
and riders. Every minute that we spend out on the road or on the dirt
goes into making wise decisions on the product we build.
Just take our line-up of supercross bikes for example. They were originally developed because a core group of staff riders would hit the park
and dirt jumps every free moment they could nd (including lunch
hour missions to the local secret site just down the road). The same
goes for our Thursday night road crew, a group that heads out for road
rides through the Fraser Valley. Or, you can always look to the many
Norco staff that push their big bikes to the limits out on trails from the
Shore to Whistler.
If you were to ask any of these Norco staff why they do it, theyd probably just shrug and say its because they love riding. But, its really
more than that. Its about commitment and heart. Whether its creating award-winning bikes, bringing innovations to the industry like
front-suspension geometry designs, or supporting grassroots and
trail building initiatives, the folks at Norco have always maintained the
same spirit for us its all about the ride, no compromise.

Richard Belson knew what he was talking about when he wrote,

Downhill racers are a unique combination of athlete, Zen master,
and mental patient; and if there is one thing weve learned about
Zen masters over the years, its that theyre really picky about bike
specs.
One of our main goals this year was to improve rider positioning on
our DH/Extreme Freeride bikes by lowering the fork length, lowering
the standover height, and shortening the head tube.
Norcos 2006 VPS Team DH, A-Line, and Atomik were all designed
with one thought in mind speed. Our Factory Team riders have
tested these bikes on everything from the Red Bull Rampage to
the World Cup DH circuit, so were condent they can handle some
serious abuse.
As quoted by Bike Magazine in their July 2005 issue, The axle path
is the key to a good suspension design, the Horst link design
creates a near vertical rear wheel axle path which all but eliminates
suspension feedback and offers a smooth ride. The Horst link 4-bar
linkage is still the design standard to judge suspension performance
by.
We have also made a few design changes specically for our
smaller riders, such as the shorter 50mm reach Marzocchi clamp
on stem (mediums have the 62mm) and a slightly lighter spring
weight.
Finally, weve lightened up all the bikes in this category by removing
excess material from the head tubes, chainstay yokes, tubing, and
dropouts.

One of the rst obvious signs that a person is maturing is when they
develop a sense of style; the same can be said about a sport. It used
to be that the best freeriders were the ones most willing to huck
their meat off the biggest drop, and the best freeride bikes were
designed to endure the most abuse.
All of our freeride bikes have been redesigned to work with singlecrown, long travel forks for increased maneuverability on and off
the ground.
Well, times they are a-changin. To be pro today means you have
style, as well as cojones. Its not enough to just go big. You need to
go big, trick it out, and make it look so smooth and easy that your
grandma will want to give it a try.
At Norco, weve carefully watched the maturing of freeride to ensure
that our bikes will always suit the needs of the most progressive
riders. As a result, our freeride bikes are lighter, more nimble, and
more maneuverable in the air.
As well, this years Shore comes in ve different frame sizes to t

a wider variety of riders, and all the bikes have a lower standover
height and a lower centre of gravity than any of our previous models.
For our freeride hardtails we have chosen to keep all the features
that have made our bikes world-famous, such as extra thick head
tubes, gusseted seatstays, and 150x12mm rear axles and 83mm
BB shells for added rear end stiffness (on the Torrent and
Rampage).
In addition, the hardtail series has been designed for 6 travel forks,
but can be adapted to run shorter travel or a 24 wheel so that you
can customize your bike to ride exactly the way you like it.
SHORE 1
SHORE FREERIDE
Both the full suspension and hardtail freeride bikes are intended for
the versatile rider who drools over steeps and dreams about technical obstacles. If you love it all, from drops, ramps, and skinnies, to
dirt jumps, skate parks, and weekends at the bike park, these are
your bikes. Its time to ride in style.
On the Shore models specically, we have used different geometry

and rear-suspension design parameters to increase pedalling efciency on climbs. As well, weve lowered the bottom bracket heights,
shortened the head tubes, and used the 2005 Six hydraformed down
tube to reduce the overall frame weight.

The XXXX, our newly designed full-suspension Supercross race

bike, has been designed with a light, nimble feel based almost
entirely on our Factory Team riders feedback. The bike uses a 4-bar
linkage design that is stiff enough for quick gate starts, jumping, and
efcient pedalling.
Although each of our Supercross bikes has been designed for a specic purpose (e.g. the XXXX for Dual Slalom, or the 416 for street/
skate parks), they all share the common denominators of strength
and customizability. Whether youre an advanced rider who wants a

Unlike many of our competitors who put street components onto

their trail bikes, our Supercross line has been developed independently, so that they suit the specic needs of riders.
The TWO50 and 416 have been built up with tough 4130 doublebutted chromoly frames for street riding and dirt jumping. Both bikes

When surng really began to gain popularity as a sport, it began to

fracture into various types and styles of riding. During this period a
group of surfers emerged known as watermen. These riders were
incredible athletes who didnt adhere to any one style. They loved
the water and everything associated with it. They would participate
in any and all styles, and did them all equally well.
After receiving such overwhelmingly positive reviews about the 2005

VPS Six from magazines such as Mountain Biking (who named it
the 2005 Bike of the Year), Mountain Bike, and nsmb.com, we felt
our only option was to make it even better.
As mountain biking has gained momentum, weve begun to see a

similar trend. Out of the various fractured styles of new school,
old school, freeride, street, DH, Enduro, and XC; riders have
emerged who do it all, and do it all REALLY well.
Each category suits a slightly different all-mountain rider and terrain

preference, but all of them will help you accomplish the same goal
to ride anywhere and everywhere, and to do it REALLY well.
We developed the Fluid line as our All-Mountain Cross-Country bike

for 2006. Using last years EXC style 4-bar linkage frame, the Fluid
gives you optimum power transfer on climbs and virtually no pedal
feedback. The rider we had in mind for this bike craves a good long
climb but still wants room for skills progression. These bikes are
light enough for a 24-hr race or one of those long, epic days out in
the woods.
In addition, our All Mountain Hardtails were created around a simple
philosophy: if an XC Hardtail is too spindly and a Shore Hardtail is
too heavy, then the All Mountain Hardtail is just right. With slacker
angles, a higher BB height, and a longer-travel fork than our XC
hardtails, the All Mountain Hardtails are at home in a wide variety of
riding conditions.

The designers at Norco realized these All Mountain riders need

bikes that are just as versatile as their owners, so for 2006 we have
further developed our All Mountain category to include All Mountain
Freeride, All Mountain XC, and All Mountain Hardtails.
Many people felt their only real criticism of the 2005 bike was the
weight. So, for 2006 we changed the rear hub (135x10mm), used a
lighter forged BB yoke, lightened up the main frame and stay tubing,
and changed a few components to reduce the overall weight of the
bike. Please, dont misunderstand, this bike is still ideal for anyone
who wants to progress their freeriding/descending skills but now
youll get to enjoy the climb a lot more as well.

As any good XC racer knows, there comes a time in every course

where you have to steal your will, take a deep breath, and throw on
your best suffer face (as our Factory Team Pro XC-racer, Roddi
Lega, likes to call it). XC racing requires big lungs, strong legs, mental determination, and a light bike.
Why a 4-bar linkage? Because few suspension systems, if any,

provide the ideal combination of stiffness, light weight, and efcient
performance of the tried-and-true 4-bar. For you techies that means
using FEA-optimized link plates, load-specic bearings, and progressive curves specically tuned for air shock compatibility. Yes,
we put a lot of thought into it.

package we could nd. This years EXC Cross-Country series includes four bikes (two full-suspension, and two hardtail bikes) that

One of the best things about cycling is that there are no real excuses. Unlike other sports like golf where you can pass blame for
poor performance on to weather, wind speed, unruly friends, grass
conditions, gear, passing wildlife, and just about anything else you
can imagine, cycling offers few excuses beyond yourself.
This year we worked in conjunction with the Symmetrics pro cycling

team, applying team riders feedback into our designs, in order to
produce a road bike line with the perfect balance of high performance and rider comfort at every level.
Sure, you can have a bad ride because you didnt eat the right food,
or you werent properly prepared for the weather, but the only real
excuse beyond yourself is not having the right bike. Well, unfortunately, if you love blaming your bike on those not-so-great rides,
youre not going to like Norcos 2006 road line.
This years Road series includes bikes so well designed and specd
that even our most committed off-road staff want to get in on the
action. Weve kept our CRR and Team carbon models for top level
racers like our Symmetrics racing team, and the CRD models with
more relaxed geometry for recreational and tness-oriented roadies.
This year we chose to continue with our CRR Carbon frame for a
level of ride comfort unattainable with conventional materials while
still having sufcient stiffness for high-performance riding and competitive racing, our CRR Aluminum/Carbon models for racers of all
levels, and our CRD Alumuium models with slightly more relaxed
geometry for all around tness and entry-level road cycling.

Weve also added more specialty bikes to our road line this year. In
addition to the C-Tri (triathlon model), which we have designed as
an excellent multi-sport style bike, weve also created the Diabolique
time trials bike that Symmetrics riders Svein Tuft, and Christian Meier rode to National Championship titles last July. As well, weve created a designated Cyclocross bike which can be used as an ideal
winter training bike, or as a competitive cyclocross racing machine.

In addition to last years triathlon specic bike, weve also expanded

the line with a dedicated pro-level time trials model and a cyclocross
model. Weve also added sizes in most models to improve overall t
and comfort for a wider variety of riders.

Today on Wild Kingdom, we will be searching for a rare, endangered species known as the Yellow-Jacketed Commuter. You can
recognize these beautiful creatures by their bright, reective, multicoloured clothing and cheerfully determined demeanor.
The design for this years VFR series was inspired in large part by
the continual feedback of our own commuting and tness oriented
population. Because almost our entire bicycle division commutes,
they have a pretty good idea of what goes into making an amazing
tness/commuting machine.
Yellow-Jackets are known for their tremendous ability to travel great

distances by bicycle each day, regardless of weather, and their incomprehensible ability to rise well before dawn every morning in
order to complete their trek.
Our hope is that these bikes will encourage the growth of the species population world wide. If you spot one of these remarkable
creatures, be sure to contact the authorities at Norco immediately
so that we can provide it with a new bike perfectly suited for its daily
journey.
Weve combined the road inuence with commuting/trekking essentials such as rack and fender mounts, fender clearance, and disc
brakes, while still leaving the bike with customization options such
as caliper and cantilever brake mounts.
To keep the frames strong and light, we chose to construct the bikes
out of double-butted 7005 Aluminium tubing. Whether you intend to
travel 10 or 10,000km, these bikes will keep you rolling smoothly
and comfortably from your rst pedal stroke to your last.

them. Our Performance Commuting series combines all the versatility of a trekking bike with the speedy, lightweight, agile performance

Our Mountain Bike series has been designed to strike a balance

between strength, durability, weight, price, comfort, and style.

then rejoice because Norcos Mountain Bike series is designed with
you in mind. Although, dont mistake simplicity for a lack of thought;
with six frame sizes, carefully chosen components, and hours of
meeting and planning to settle on frame geometry and materials,
almost as much work goes into these bikes as any of our top racing

The Adventure X hardtail series has been designed with more of

a Shore-style inuence for a rider who wants to develop their skills
and move towards a more aggressive style of cycling. Lastly, our

There are few things more fun than passing a really expensive
looking sports car in a non-descript sedan. As you know, looks can
be deceiving, and the fastest looking vehicle isnt always the one
that gets there the fastest.
This years line of Hybrid 700c bikes was designed with recreation
and commuting in mind. We spent most of our time focused on one
thought lets make these bikes comfortable, while keeping them
fast.
The same can be said of Norcos 2006 Hybrid 700C series of bikes.
Theyre great looking bikes, but they almost look too comfortable to
be speedy. Well, Hybrids may look cushy, but one test ride around a
parking lot and youll realize they are far from slow.
For comfort we chose features such as adjustable stems and ergonomic dual-density saddles and grips so that every bike in the line
can be tailor-t to its rider. We also decided to give some models
suspension forks and suspension seat posts for a super-smooth
ride.
Our Hybrid 700C line is ideal for daily commuting on roads, gravel
paths, and smooth trails. We designed these bikes with a specic
rider in mind: one who appreciates a careful mixture of comfort, performance, and value. Whether you are planning to ride from home
to work, or from the Pacic to the Atlantic, these bikes will get you
there.

The frames themselves have been designed with slack, comfortoriented geometry, a longer wheelbase, and low standover heights
to ensure the bikes are stable and predictable as you pedal. Weve
also included must-have commuting/trekking features such as rack
mounts, lots of fender clearance, and puncture-resistant tires.

If you thought passing a fast-looking car was fun when you were
driving, try ying by one on a bicycle as it crawls painfully through
trafc to and from work. Warning: prolonged exposure to bicycles
may result in improved tness, increased happiness, and smug

Does anyone just ride for fun anymore? It seems like everyone
who cycles nowadays is either an Olympic hopeful committed to
no less than six rides per week while living off a diet of dark green
leafy veggies, or a fully aggro freeride cliff dropper who occasionally wrestles bears and cougars in their spare time.
The name says it all; our Comfort City & Path series is designed
with one major factor in mind comfort (surprise!) From adjustable stems to ergonomic dual-density saddles and grips, every
bike in the line is designed to be tailor-tted to its rider.
Well, forget the adrenaline rush, put away the spandex and
heart-rate monitor, and just say no to high-speed collisions with
trees. If you want to jump on a bike and go for a relaxing ride
along the river, or you simply want a great excuse to get out of
the house for a little fresh air and exercise, then you should be
riding Norcos Comfort City & Path series.
These bikes are specially designed for cyclists who care about
tness, but dont feel the need to be horribly uncomfortable in
the process. Whether you need a bike for short commutes, enjoy
riding along the dyke, want to explore gravel/paved trails, or just
want to take a relaxing cruise through your neighbourhood, these
are your bikes.
To add even more to the comfort factor, every bike comes with a
suspension fork, suspension seat post, and low standover height
for a super-smooth ride and maximum stability. The frames
themselves have also been designed with slack comfort-oriented
geometry and a longer wheelbase for stability and predictability
as you pedal.
Weve also added some features such as smooth-rolling, puncture-resistant tires, wide-ratio gearing, rack mounts, and lots of
fender clearance for people who specically want a versatile,
comfortable bike for their daily commute.

Norcos Cruiser/Lifestyle line has been designed for simplicity and

style. Weve done away with the bells, whistles, shifters, and suspension (although they can be customized to have all those things)
in favor of a bike that is easy to ride and easy to maintain.
There is nothing else like it, and we promise you, youll have a
blast! Regardless of age, gender, tness, or skill, if you can turn a
pedal, you can go on a cruise. There is nothing like the experience
of riding along sandwiched between a punk rocker with a ghetto
blaster strapped to his seat, and a cute little granny with her lap
dog in a basket.
In this line weve kept our traditional cruiser bikes, the Rio Vista,
Santiago, and Sekine. These bikes use classic frame styles with
wide prole rims and balloon tires for increased stability and control.
People often dismiss cruisers in favor of a more practical bike

without factoring that when you have a rad bike, youll want to ride
it. If you need a bike for doing chores, running from point A to B,
or just gliding along a path or seawall, consider a cruiser youll
NEVER regret it.
On top of all this, the entire line has been given a facelift with ne
detailing such as custom-stitched saddles and grips to complement

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
When you begin writing, one of the rst lessons you learn is, less
is more. Reducing the amount of words you use, forces a writer to
pick and choose each word with more precision and care. The same
is true when you design a BMX bike.
Weve designed this years BMX series as the lightest bikes possible without compromising strength. To drop the weight, weve used
smaller 6mm dropouts, removed top tube gussets, shortened the
down tube gussets, used smaller sprockets, reduced seat tubes,
and selected weight-conscious parts such as a 36-spoked front
wheel. Our higher end models also use Euro BB shells to save additional weight.
Because of their essential simplicity and minimal parts (compared to

other types of bikes), sometimes a BMX is the toughest bike to design each angle, each line, and each part must be perfect theres
no cutting corners when every choice counts.
This year, Norco has taken the minimalist approach to a new level.
Weve designed a line of bikes with complete simplicity in mind.
Weve shaved weight, unnecessary parts, and even unnecessary
graphics and logoing off the entire line to bring you, what we feel is
our best line of BMX bikes yet.
Besides reducing weight, the second goal in our BMX design this
year was simplicity - no extra frills or things you dont need, just the
essentials to lay it down wherever you go. This goal is also reected
in the low key graphics and colour choices on all our 2006 models.
